It’s your passport to riches, my friend. Y’see, we need a few things -- just some junk, nothing valuable to a big hero like you. We call ‘em Darkmoon Artifacts, and there’s all different kinds to be found all over Azeroth. The Darkmoon Field Guide helps you discover artifacts while you’re explorin’ dungeons, slayin’ monsters, and fightin’ in Battlegrounds. Without a guide, you’d never notice ‘em, and it’ll help keep you focused on the stuff we want. Can confirm as a dungeon drop. Mysterious Grimoire dropped from Archbishop Benedictus in Hour of Twilight, as well as Ornate Weapon from Asira Dawnslayer in the same run. As far as I can tell, drop rates aren't 100% considering I had done an End Time instance with no drop beforehand, but it does seem consistent that you have to defeat similarly levelled bosses for these items...and be lucky with your rolls.

Don't forget your towel and your Hitchhiker's Guid- I mean, Darkmoon Adventurer's Guide! =)

Note of interest: As long as you carry the Darkmoon Adventurer's Guide with you, you can find these even when the Darkmoon Faire is not in session.

Just to clarify one point, the quest drops that happen in the dungeons/raids/BG’s happen all the time, even if the faire isn’t in town. Think of it sort of like the Darkmoon Card redemptions. You’re out playing all month, while you’re doing stuff you’re getting chances at the items, then when the faire is in town you turn it all in. (It’s also worth pointing out that the turn-in items aren’t soulbound, so just like the cards I’d expect some people to farm them just to put them up on the AH.)

Please keep in mind that the quest is not repeatable during one DMF festival. After you complete the quest you cannot get it for the second time, as it states when you use an item for the second time "You have already completed this quest". In other words - you can do the quest once every month.
Now, to all the naysayers, Blizzard has confirmed that these quests are to be repeated each month. Source

What is this? This item Mysterious Grimoire starts the quest that you can turn in with the Darkmoon Faire whenever it is in town.

How do I get it? In order to be eligible to loot this, you must have the Darkmoon Adventurer's Guide in your ~~bags~~ inventory - which can be obtained in one of two ways:

Receive it as a reward from Gelvas Grimegate after completing The Darkmoon Faire for Alliance or The Darkmoon Faire for Horde.
Receive it from Selina Dourman just by talking to her, she stands at the first tent on the left-side of the entrance to the Darkmoon Faire.
Note: if you have The Darkmoon Faire quest in your quest log, Selina will not offer to give you the guide - you will either need to drop the quest and speak to her again or simply hand in at which point you get the guide anyway.

Where do I get it? This particular item only seems to drop from various level-appropriate 5-man dungeon bosses (mostly humanoid caster-types). Drop locations will continue to be updated as they are confirmed. If you are level 85, the bosses that may drop Ornate Weapon for you are highlighted in bold:

Why do I want it? There are several reasons that you may want this item:

Receive 10 Darkmoon Prize Tickets upon handing it in - these tickets allow you to purchase mounts, pets and other collectibles whenever the Darkmoon Faire is on.
Receive 250 reputation (or more depending on your racial/guild bonuses etc) with the Darkmoon Faire - great for anyone who is either a rep junkie or is working towards The Insane title awarded by the Insane in the Membrane achievement.
Having completed the quest that this item starts will count towards the achievement Darkmoon Despoiler.
Gold gold GOLD - since this item isn't BoP (bind on pickup), it is tradable and sellable via the auction house. If you don't care about the above three points, then you can profiteer from someone who does!

What else do I need to know?

High level characters ~~can no longer~~ are not supposed to be able to farm lower level dungeons for this one since a recent hotfix. This should now only obtainable in level-appropriate dungeons (though there continue to be reports of 85s picking up Mysterious Grimoire in low level dungeons), and as always, success is at the mercy of RNG.
The quest can only be turned in once per Darkmoon Faire. You can certainly collect more Mysterious Grimoire, however if you've turned in for the current faire, you'll have to wait till it's next in town.
Mysterious Grimoire can be looted anytime - that is to say, the Darkmoon Faire does not have to be currently on in order for you to be able to find these puppies.

Scarlet Monastery seems to be a good place to farm the Mysterious Grimoire. Both Arcanist Doan in the library and Bloodmage Thalnos in the graveyard drop the item. I often just cycle through the four dungeons (graveyard, cathedral, armory, and library) when farming. What makes this strategy even more worthwhile is that bosses in each of the four areas drop a Darkmoon artifact. You can get the Ornate Weapon from Herod in the armory and the Imbued Crystal from High Inquisitor Whitemane in the cathedral. I solo all four dungeons, reset the instances, and repeat.

As of the second Darkmoon Faire (Jan 1st), we are unable to farm the Darkmoon Dungeon quest items from low level instances so as a level 85, with this change/bugfix in mind, here's a compiled list of all the info you need to know for level 85 characters; if you are lower than level 85, other instances may be a better choice for you and more information may be found in other comments.

Firstly, to get any of these items to drop, you will need the Darkmoon Adventurer's Guide obtained from the introductory quest "The Darkmoon Faire" H A which is located in Orgrimmar and Stormwind, respectively, or pick it up from Selina Dourman, who stands at the left-side of the entrance to Darkmoon Faire. You can only get the Darkmoon Adventurer's Guide during the Faire but all the quest items can always drop, regardless of the Faire being on or not. The drop chance is quite low, roughly 15% and everyone who has the guide will be able to roll greed but not need.

Secondly, all of the items are BoE so can be traded with other players if you can't manage to pick up every item before the Faire ends or want to pocket some cash/give to a friend (These can be thrown in gift wrapping). Incidentally, all of the quest items can be handed in once per month (they're consumed when you hand it in), so you might want to stock these up if you're having lucky drops - sometimes you can get really unlucky and not get anything for a while!

Most importantly, the rewards: You can either sell them for a fair amount of gold to another player as these are quite desirable or hand them in for 250 DMF rep, some gold and varying amounts of tickets.Imbued Crystal,Monstrous Egg,Mysterious Grimoire and Ornate Weapon give 10 tickets each, and can drop from any dungeon level 76-85 (for level 85s). A Treatise on Strategy gives 15 tickets but only drops from level 85 heroics. Together, these 5 give you Darkmoon Dungeoneer. Captured Insignia, Banner of the Fallen and Fallen Adventurer's Journal give 5 tickets each and are obtained from looting the insignias of enemies in Battlegrounds. Together, these three give Darkmoon Defender. Soothsayer's Runes gives 10 tickets and drops from certain level 85 raid bosses. All together, these give Darkmoon Despoiler, 2250 DMF rep and 80 tickets.

Most of this information is now outdated. Official word is Monstrous Egg, Mysterious Grimoire, Imbued Crystal, and Ornate Weapon, do not drop for high level characters anymore.

1. This was a bug that is being hotfixed. A character that is not level-appropriate for a dungeon should not get Monstrous Egg, Mysterious Grimoire, Imbued Crystal, or Ornate Weapon drops. This is irrespective of whether or not the character has a Darkmoon Adventurer's Guide in her bags.

2. & 3. We previously had an issue where Grisly Trophy was only going to the player who recorded the killing blow. They are now distributed randomly. Furthermore, there were previously cases where all of the artifacts listed above could be rolled Need. That has been hotfixed and they are all now flagged Greed-only.

4. Regarding drop rates, these items are dropping as-intended. They are rare, and the quests and achievements that depend on them are intended to take some time to complete. They're comparable to the Darkmoon decks and cards. We made them tradeable, so that players who experience a run of bad luck can still acquire what they're after by trading with friends or buying them on the auction house.

Dropped today from Exarch Maladaar in Auchenai Crypts normal. I'm lvl 85.
Maybe they forgot to "fix" the BC dungeons?

Updated for mop and it looks like there are no drops in . According to the wowhead, A Treatise on Strategy drops in heroic mode, and the other items drop in normal modes off the respective boss. I.e.: Ornate Weapon drops in normal and not heroic.

I've compiled a easy to see table of where each item for Darkmoon Dungeoneer can be found to get the most bang for your regular/heroic dungeon queues since Blizzard "fixed" the drops so that Darkmoon Faire monthly quest items can only be looted in level appropriate dungeons. This is ordered in alphabetical order, with the instances that drops the most items for DMF items towards the top.

I'm keeping the level 80 and 85 data for people who have not upgraded from the Battlechest and Cata to MoP.
If you find that a boss drops something not listed here. Leave a reply and I'll add it in, eventually.

I am not sure if this is mentioned, but if you looking for making gold with this and similar items and if AH prices are below 16 gold (or depending on which item you looking), it is best to give this to your alts. Since quest awards gold, but you can only submit one. For example on my server, the PvP artifacts go only for 2g, but the quest awards 16g 54s at level 85.

While these items do not drop for players of inappropriate level anymore, they easily can be farmed with low level friend you can trust. Just quickly kill everything for him and let him loot bosses. Darkmoon items will drop from bosses now and while you can't loot them, your friend can! Since these items are BOE, he can just give them to you after looting.
