Finally, a (useful) ring you can throw onto your lowbie/fresh toons (also, the first BoA ring!). You can get it by winning the Kalu'ak Fishing Derby, which is the second version of the Booty Bay Fishing Extravaganza. It is held on Saturdays at 2 PM Server Time.

At level 1 it gives no stats besides the +5% experience; useless to level 1 twinks. Its stats are Stamina, critical strike rating, and hit rating, universally-used stats for leveling (as hit is useless to healers, and crit doesn't affect HoTs).

The in-game calendar lists the derby for Saturdays at 2 PM.

personally i think this is stupid cus only 52 ppl can win it per year -_- and you cant pay ppl to help you win this tourny :( and i have the STV tourny i shouldn't deny another person a chance at the salty title yes only 52 ppl can get it a year after this that number will increase to 104 note that the numbers are per server but still thats not very many imo and this tourny will be EXTREMELY diluted with ppl just looking for more EXP for their alts which is crap so they pretty much *!@#ed this tourny up really bad

There is a hidden bonus on this ring! If your name is Roberts you get a title (Dread pirate) and immediately go up to level cap. The only side effect is you can only keep the ring for a few days before you have to pass it on to a new character, but if said new character is named Westly or Inigo you get the bonus over again!

I'm copying my information from El's Angling here to help people out. I was the server first on Emerald Dream to win the Kalu'ak Fishing Derby.

Boo no server first achievement since they integrated STV with it. Anyways.

* Win: YES! :D

* Effective Fishing Skill (include bonuses from gear/lures): 585. I had the Kalu'ak Pole, a Glow Worm, and my Lucky Fishing Hat.

* Faction (Horde/Alliance): For the Horde!

* Successful Casts (count up the non-Suckerfish from the start of the contest until the shark catch): Eighteen casts.

* Pygmy Suckerfish Caught (from the start of the contest until the shark catch): Twelve

* Where Shark Caught (pool/water type and zone): I was in Grizzly Hills, fishing in the Salmon Pools. I was in the inland lakes in the western portion of the zone, near the Horde flight path.

* Turn-in Time (to Elder Clearwater): This I can't say clearly, but probably ten to twelve minutes.

* Anything Unusual (for example, low level win or interesting strategy)

There was a person right behind me who was on his way to turn it in when I did so, by about ten seconds on his clock. This would indicate that ten to twelve minutes is probably going to be a popular time to have the best chance of catching this.

And I chose the ring so I'm posting my win info here.

Same here, first one on my server to win this ring! :)
A really nice reward and a nice achievement.

Equipment: Just the Kalu'ak Fishing Pole, no additional lures
Total Casts: 8
Total time taken: 7 minutes (Used a flightpath to get there, used HS to get back)
My Fishing location: Howling Fjord. (But this can basically be done from any spot that has Pygmy Suckerfish in it. See: https://www.wowhead.com/cata/item=40199 for locations)

I don't have this ring but I have calculated it basing on shoulders and chest.
quest: Escape from the Winterfin Caverns

base XP: 20100
with chest and shoulders: 24120

if 20100=100% then 24120=x

x=(24120*100%)/20100
x=120%

according to Your calculations he should have 121% because 1.1*1.1 =1.21 so it seems taht Your calculations are wrong

Ring enchants are -not- applicable on Dread Pirate Ring unless your alt has the necessary enchanting skill. Just put 30 stam on it to try.

This ring really should be rewarded to anyone doing this event, not just the one who wins. It be a nice reward for all the *time* you spent fishing to start with. Fishing is the most tedious profession in wow, hands down. I dont know if most people "cheat" when fishing, cant blame you if you are tho. However i have leveled fishing... twice to 450 and that is so boring and tedious one can easily get nightmares from it.

Anyway back to topic this ring imo should be rewarded to anyone who have fishing skill 450 and completes this event, not just by being the first. Tbh no idea how this event even works, just noticed the shout-out about turning in a shark.

The ring is nice but its is far from "great".

Has anyone tried to enchant this with the enchanter's enchant (lol) and then throw it to an alt? Is it doable or the ring remain stuck on the character/the enchant doesn't work on the alt?

(Note - although the ring gives 5% more experience, the reduction in time taken is not 5%, it is slightly less than that - if the ring gave 100% more experience, the time taken would be reduced by 50% and not 100%)

I guess your calculation was:
time reduction = 1 - 1 / experience rate
r(100%) = 0%
r(105%) = 4,76%
r(120%) = 16,67%
r(125%) = 20%

Someone who has the other two heirlooms just gets 3,33% out of it. (20 - 16,67)
This concludes in only ~30 hours overall or 3h 20min per character.

But even my calculation is not complete, because it does not take the "+hit"-bonus in account.

If you aim for the fishing achievements anyway, it's a nice reward.
If you do not, then you should not start fishing just to get the ring.

What people seem to forget is that those 5% are sooo easely gained in other ways.. it's really not worth the time grinding unless you're a baller at fishing.
My point is that if your levling takes so long time that 5% seems like a huge timesaver, you're probably better off getting a levling guide, buying up a couple of rare BoE items on the AH for your alt etc.
Ofc you can do both though but imho it's really not worth the time.
You might want it as a show off item though ;)

It's worth mentioning that you DO NOT have to catch the shark in a pool.
I caught a shark in the lake in Grizzly Hills and won myself this ring.
It says you can catch a shark "anywhere you can catch a Pygmy Suckerfish".
Pools are not the only place you can catch them.
If you're flying around searching for pools, you're wasting attempts.

YOUR math is flawed, a 25% increase means playing 80 hours (not 75) for the equivalent of 100 hours XP, or 4 bars free every level, not 5.....

25% of 80 = 20, therefore 80 hours + 25% = 100 hours

25% of 16 = 4, therefore 16 bars + 25% = 20 bars

Try thinking of it this way, it would take you 25% less time, or 25% less xp required.

25% of 80 is 20, but we're not talking about 80 hours, we're talking about 100 hours, therefore 25% of 100 hours would be 75 hours. So it's not the math that's flawed, it's the interpretation of the meaning "gain x% more xp".

25% of 20 is 5, ie 4 units of 5 =20 ie 5+5+5+5=20

Clearly the issue is that people are interpreting it as requiring 25% less xp rather than gaining 25% more xp. Thus the confusion. But 25% more xp gained =/= 25% less xp required.

Fail on the math guys.

The XP bonus is most likely multiplicative.

so 10% + 10% + 5% is actually more like

1.1 * 1.1 * 1.05 = 1.2705

So a total bonus of 27.05%

Then, i also saw the error of someone thinking they could substract that from 100% to get the XP required to get. (like 100-27.05) Wrong again.

suppose you need 100k xp normally, with a xp bonus of 27.05% you would only need:
100.000 / 1.2705 = 78709.17 XP

I have one of these...

Only took 2 YEARS of every Sat & Sun doing the Fishing Tourney's ( THAT truely sucked)...

My questions are...

Can you equip 2 of these on the same toon?

Can you even have 2 of these on one account?

BTW I got my shark in Venture Bay from a pool about 3 minutes into the Saturday Tourney...I almost had a heart attack as the game started lagging at the same time...it took 4 minutes to hearth back to town and turn it in.

Good Luck to all...I have 2 toons with the Salty Title and frankly I'll NEVER do that again...

...of course NOW I have a Worgen...I was really starting to enjoy my weekends....sigh....

As of 12-11-10 this ring does NOT provide bonus XP to toons going past lvl 81 - just won the Derby today and tried it out. This is post-Cataclysm and I tried on an 81 druid. So sad :(.

As I discovered today, it helps to do it on weekends when people are likely not in the game, or if they are, are busy elsewhere.

(And for those skipping around looking for harder info, I can confirm the shark can be pulled from regular waters, not just in pools. That's how I got mine, since someone else was taking the pools and I figured I'd lose more time trying to find fresh ones.)

The 5% XP bonus also increases XP gained from Archaeology digs. I assume this would also apply for mining nodes, but haven't tested it myself.

I was getting 12304 XP per dig (on a 77 mage, who was also wearing heirloom shoulders), and with the ring equipped I get 12840 XP.

This ring says from 1-80 is that just a wowhead error or will this not lvl past 80?
Cause the jump from 80-81 for the other iteams increases the stat's by x2.5 so this would quickly become a very bad ring if it didn't.

With the new Capes and heads its 15% ekstra. some says there is legs too, but where can you get them, so it could be 50% ekstra xp, and with that guild thing its 60% ekstra xp.

I won this on the first shot, took like 10mins to get it, so I guess everyone had bad luck. My tactic was to start at the very left of Grizzly Hills and follow the river east, make the loop around that circle shaped river, then go south. Had LOTS of schools and zero competition, which was my goal. The bad time wasn't due to lack of schools(There was plenty), it was simply because the damn fish didn't drop. I was going on 2 stacks of suckerfish with other trash when it finally did, amazed that no one had turned in the shark yet.

I avoided Borean Tundra and Fjord, as that is where everyone else will be fishing that shows up at the last second for the contest(You will arrive in Northrend in either of those zones unless it's a mage port). I also avoided Sholazar, expecting anyone that realizes my previous statement to go there instead. The rivers and lake at the center would be promising, but you'd most likely have competition for it. Competition=bad because it means ppl will either attack you/gang you and KILL you to stop you, or leech off of your schools like a di ck. Either way it's a setback vs ppl without the hassle(Meaning they will likely win). When I went to turn it in, I did so only about 5 seconds before some night elf chick that ran to the NPC after me. So half skill, half luck. Had my hearth set to Dalaran obviously. Alliance have an unfair advantage due to hearthing closer to the NPC, but the difference is minor.(It only amounts to about 1-2 extra fishing casts)

If you don't like Grizzly, then I'd recommend the west/southern parts of Fjord, far away from the FPs. Very good ring, I'm glad I threw my rod in the contest. My next toon I plan to roll soon will now have another +5% exp and a blue ring that scales with lvl. Keep in mind that +exp stacks up with no cap, so this is another 5% on top of whatever else you have. That makes this ring VERY valuable. You only need to get once too. You can reuse it forever. The total will be +40% for me because I'll have the shoulder(10%), chest(10%), ring(5%), cape(5%) and guild perk bonus(10%.) I'll have pretty much all of them except the head, but rank20 guilds on my server are near non existent.(If there even is one, I doubt it'll let me sit in it for 3 weeks just to get a loom)

Since it is completely random whether you get a shark or not, your fishing skill level is entirely irrelevant, if you are only fishing from pools.

On second thought, you should have at least 100 fishing so you can learn to track pools.

Yes, skill lvl has ZERO impact on your chance to win this shark. This is because your chance to catch a fish is 100% if fished from a pool, and the shark is only in those pools. So it's just random blind luck that you either get the shark or don't. Skill and lures only matter on open water, on pools they do nothing at all.

Few days back rolled onto US servers, and as needed to start there from scratch, was looking to get this ring. On mine old server I got it after dozens of tries, so had experience in how to get it, just needed a luck.

Sadly in saturday I managed to reach only lvl 66, and just learned fishing, newer the less, have decided to give it a try and try and catch a shark.

Went to Borean Thundra, and flyed from zepelin on arrival there, just to jump in death, as forgot I still couldnt fly in Northered :-), from warsong hold tooked a griphon (or whatever) and flyed to dalaran and seted hs at Amisi Azuregaze, bought few fish oils (as doing this with shaman) of ah and went on ground mount from Dalaran to Venture Bay, died only twice on way there.

So, just in time, at 14h when derby started, I was at venture bay, with no school in sight, tho managed to find 1 asap, fished it up, vent to next one, there 85 guy joined me fishing it up, then i moved to next one and catched a shark, voila, hsed, and handed it first. Got few from angry to curious whispers too. Had aswell unexpected luck with npcs there, was neutral with them so they didnt atack me

To summarize it, after wining the derby i was lvl 66, with fishing skill 12

--- A guide to getting this ring ----

What you will need:
1. Your hearthstone set to Dalaran
2. 100+ fishing skill to find fish schools. (Technically 1+ skill works too)
3. Weather-Beaten Journal (Registro Rovinato dal Tempo)
4. An Alarm clock that can be set to 1:45pm Saturday (Most cell phones can do this. Also dollar stores may sell alarms that can do this)

Helpful Items/Abilities; Another nice item to have is a Wormhole Generator: Northrend (Generatore di Tunnel Spaziotemporali: Nordania) but its not required. The Argent Tournament Tabard will get you close to Dalaran but its rather far from fishing locations. Not many schools north of the Argent Tournament. There are also Rings that will port you to Dalaran but 5000g. Its also handy to be a Mage that can portal to Dalaran.

IMPORTANT; You will want to use your Hearthstone to get back to Dalaran. Especially if your alliance as their Inn is closer to the quest NPC. Only use your hearthstone if it will be ready at 2:00pm.

Set up the alarm near your computer. If you hear the alarm you have 15min (hearthstone CD) to go get ready for fishing northrend pools to get the Black tip shark. If you find yourself in Dalaran when you log on you will have plenty of time to get to fish schools. If you are low level you will want to take the SW or OG portals and take a boat back to northrend as there are many safe fishing schools for even level 1, which is the level requirement of the quest.

The boat in Stormwind will take you to Borean Tundra to start fishing. The Zeppelin outside Undercity takes you to Howling Fjord. If your able to fly in northrend you can use the Zeppelin in Ogrimmar (Its land locked and not suggested for low level players).

As you fish you want hop from school to school fishing from them. Fishing from a school is 100% to get a fish even at 1 skill so lures are not needed. The fish you will be going after is the Blacktip Shark (Squalo Pinnanera) which only obtainable for the hour of the tournament. You will then Hearthstone back to Dalaran and turn in the shark to the Kalu'ak walrus man running the tournament located beside the Fishing Trainer Marcia Chase.

Notes: I've rarely seen the tournament go for longer than 15minutes on my server. I have read comments that with maximum 525 fishing and lures that you may be able to fish in open water and not have to school hop. I will test this personally before I recommend doing it. I may be able to obtain a shark in open water for the hour even after someone else has won the tournament for testing. I'll edit this if I get one open water. For now, school hopping has worked for me and is the recommended method.

This heirloom ring is fantastic to use while leveling, yet another slot I don't have to worry about upgrading!
Also, if you have Lure Master Tackle Box equipped it will be placed inside, should you find yourself looking in regular bags if you win this ring.
