Patch Day: 11-13-07, found one in my first AND second Heavy Supply Crate in Zangarmarsh from a Steam Pump Flotsam debris spawn. The Book itself is BoP, however the crates are not. Look before you loot (turn off that auto-loot feature you have your fishing mod do) and then you may be able to sell it. This post is too early to tell how much it will go for on market, but it seemed easy enough to get to not be worth the hassle of an AH.

You cannot see the book if you've already learned the skill. I had 3 crates with books in them and I used one of them, then when I looked into another again it dissapeared.

You can, however, send all your crates to an alt who doesn't have the skill. The alt needs to have 1 or higher fishing skill to see the book. (Needs to have trained fishing.)

Well, I fished up a bunch of Curious Crates on my main (who'd already learned fish tracking) and tossed them in the mail to my banker, on the off chance that I might find another journal IF someone besides my main opened the crate.

The good news is, I did find one. I left it safely in its crate, because my banker only has a fishing skill of 1. I asked in Trade if anyone wanted it, got a response, and a trade followed. Curiously (ha) the Curious Crate appeared empty to my client, and she told me so. I had no issues returning her money, and she traded the Crate back to me. It seems she didn't have any fishing skill whatsoever (that's the impression I got). I checked the crate once it was back on me, and the Journal remained safely in place. I tossed it to another alt of mine, again with fishing skill (a mere 4), and that character could see the Journal as well.

I think this item is much like the BoP recipes found throughout the Outlands. If you don't have the skill, you can't see the prize. That means you CAN buy this from another player, so long as it remains in the Crate that holds it. And, if you trade it to someone else and they claim they didn't get a Journal out of it, you should demand your Crate back, in exchange for their money. The Crate looks empty but remains in their inventory, and there's no good reason (as of my posting this) that they shouldn't be able to return it.

Was cleaning my bank alt today and found a Curious Crate lying around (must have been there for weeks). I peek inside it and see one of these journals :D
The 2.3 patch spawned this book inside my unlooted crate!
Mailed the box to my main double-time.

Consider the following when you first open a fished container.

Do you have fishing? If so, you have a random chance to find a journal.
Where did the container originate? Wreckage seems to yield containers with the highest chance of holding a Journal.
Do you already know Find Fish? If a journal exists, it will be deleted from the container, before displaying the contents.

Knowing Fishing
I'd mailed 30 unopened containers to a level 11 bank alt without fishing. No journals dropped. Then the character trained fishing level 1. The subsequent 30 containers dropped 6 journals.

Knowing "Find Fish"
After learning "Find Fish", on a higher level character, the next 30 containers provided no additional journals. The contents seem to be decided when the container is first opened. When mailed to an alt, the contents remained the same. With regards to Journals; does the game stop making the attempt to give you a journal, or does it simply delete them?

Knowledge deletes journals
Several journal containers were stored with the bank alt. Successful journal containers were emptied of all other items, like Fel Iron, and Netherweave Cloth. One of these journal-only crates was mailed back to the level 70 who knew "Find Fish".

When the skilled character peeked inside, the game displayed an error; "You do not have permission to loot." The container disappeared from inventory. The journal was lost. If you know "Find Fish", the game will normally quietly destroy the journal before revealing the contents. By removing the other contents, the game was forced to display an error.

Hopefully this clarifies the item's behavior.

I went to WoWHeads page for Curious Crates ( https://www.wowhead.com/cata/item=27513 ) since that is reportedly the highest drop rate source. Made circles around the lakes in Zangarmarsh for about 30 min fishing the "Steam pump flotsam", had about 8 crates drop before I got the journal. Very easy to get, just a small time investment.

Not too long ago I fished up a crate while already knowing the "Find Fish" ability. Opened up the crate, nothing inside, but it didn't disappear from my inventory, so I thought it might contain the book.

Sent it over to a guildie and yup, it contained the Find Fish book. Im not kidding.

So unlike someone far above me mentioned (a post with about 30 + rating), you CAN fish up a crate with a journal inside and still sell it to someone else!

After some testing of my own, I'd like to change something about your statement.

After fishing up 20 containers from standard pools (Curious Crates, in case you were curious... oh god, I made a pun!) that has fish tracking and sending them to a high level alt with level 1 fishing, 11 of them had a journal in them, roughly a 50% drop rate.

I will keep sending them to an alt to try and confirm this, I plan on giving one to all my guildies that don't have it yet, and selling the rest.

My girlfriend and I are leveling Horde alts. Her fishing is ~170 and mine is ~100.

We swung over to Alterac to fish up some Raw Greater Sagefish for cooking. Within 20 minutes she had fished up 4 Iron Bound Trunks.

She started looking in the trunks and got her journal from the second one. She then traded me the remaining two trunks and I found a journal in the first one that I opened.

Don't trust the drop chance that is listed on Wowhead because people who already have the journal are skewing it as they will never see it drop again.

youve made such a discovery only by that, that zangarmarsh seems to be the most fished zone since the tbc, the droprate from the boxes is all the same - about 15% since you can only loot it once after you have learnt it.

If it were truly the case that zangarmarsh was the most fished zone, then the apparent drop rate of the one-per-customer item would be lowest, assuming, as done here, that it has a flat droprate consistent throughout all zones.

easy as hell to get just go down to zangarmarsh above coilfang reservoir fish from the steam pump floatsam(or any other wreckage) and boom book is right there literaly took me 5 mins, what i did is i went down to zangar found some wreckage fished till i made sure i was in the wreckage area once in just waited got a couple of crates opened em nothing then tht wreckage went try so i went to another one (really close by) and fished there 2 catches in there and i had it

First time I get the quest with my Death Knight Fellblood Fillet, my fishing skill are 276(+100)/375 and the quest reward is the Bag of Fishing Treasures, which drop to me in the same moment, the Captain Rumsey´s Lager and 2 Elixir of Water Walking !

Just getting in the 310 of fishing now, and at now, I fish 3 more Curious Crates in fishing schools of Zangarmash, and send to my 2 other alts (Hunter 80 and Druid 61 with 225 and 275 fishing skill), 1 of them drops trash, but the other 2, one of them have the the Weather-Beaten Journal :), and last one to send to my other alt, guess what?
More Weather-Beaten Journal ! Now all my chars have the Find Fish skill! 3 in 4 is good no?

Can confirm that if your fishing lvl is below 275 then around Southshore jetty is the place to get the journal. I spent 2 hours in Zangarmarsh then went to Southshore, and got the drop on the 2nd cast from a Water tight chest. Don't waste your time going anywhere else !

The best place there is for this item, I believe, Is the stream just east of southshore.

I have learned this skill on all my toons (except one lol) from fish the sagefish schools i get atleast one per 3 pools.

Send all boxes unopened to a lowbie alt that hasnt learned this skill and has trained fishing.

Ive gotten anywhere from 10g-50g for these. I dont put a price when in /2 and most replys say how much they will pay for this.

You can fish it lvl 18-20ish at Cragpool Lake in Windshear Crag (Stonetalon Mountains). Just look for the schooner wreckage. No need to go to higher lvl areas like STV, Desolace, or Southshore.

I've found the Weather-Beaten Journal on various characters throughout the game. I found it many times on my Horde toons in the pond just outside Tarren Mill, Hillsbrad Foothills (if you aren't on a PVP server, this is also viable for Alliance toons). For my Alliance toons, I've fished it up in Auberdine, Darkshore. It is not necessary to fish in flotsam as I've gotten crates and boxes from normal fish pools. Good luck to all!

A word of warning if you transfer servers with these books in crates. The contents of the crates will be randomized, and the books will be lost. I found this out the hard way, unfortunately, as I lost two books.

My brother and I both looked for these at the same time, went to the lake north of the river in Windshear Crag, and fished Watertight Trunks out of Schooner Wreckage spawns. Neither of us had Find Fish but were both over Fishing 100. The first trunk I managed to fish up had a Weather-Beaten Journal, and the first one my brother fished up also contained it. This pretty much shows that these are really easy to obtain, if the conditions are right. By the way, in order to find the Wreckage spawns once mine disappeared, I used Find Fish to find others for my brother :). Just a warning, the area was swarming with Venture Co. mobs around levels 18-20. Good Luck!

This is just my experience, however I have 3 chars with fish tracking and all three found the Weather Beaten Journal in mithril sealed trunks in fishing pools in feralas (the most recent in an oily blackmouth pool oddly enough.)

I followed the advice of another here and fished some pools at Windshear Crag in the Stonetalon Mountains. Given the amount of water, it seemed as if there were always pools of oil or wreckage. Took me about 20-30 minutes, 15 pools, and 7 or 8 watertight trunks before I finally pulled a journal out.

Your best bet is to go to eastern Stonetalon Mountains, and fish up Watertight Crates in Windshear Crag, where the Venture Co. is so active. Fish in pools of floating debris or wreckage. The journal is BoP and unique, so any character that has either a journal (be it in inventory or bank) OR the Find Fish skill cannot loot them.

The best way to provide journals to others is to have one toon fish up the crates, and mail them UNOPENED to another toon who has fishing but not find fish. He opens the trunks, but does NOT LOOT them. This allows you to find the trunks with the journals in them, and mail them off or bark them in trade.

Hmm...since everyone seems to have *vastly* different experiences at the same locations, I'm wondering if there's some external factor involved with the drop rate.

For example, the number of any particular type of fish you reel in can be dependent on the time of day and location where you're fishing. Perhaps there's something similar with the crates, like the time of day (or day of the week) at a particular location, or how recently the nodes have been fished out? (For example, maybe they drop more often during the afternoon along the shore of STV, but practically disappear late at night, and maybe around that time, the drop rate picks up in Hillsbrad, and so on.)

Or perhaps the drop rate is keyed to something, like the fishing skill of the character who first looks in the crate? (I mean, the ability to find fish would be of considerably more use to someone with a low fishing score as opposed to a character whose fishing is almost maxed out, wouldn't it?)

I don't use the Wowhead addon (I'm running the game under Linux, and on my rickety old machine, it's all I can do just to get it to run :-), but my understanding is that it doesn't track the time of day (or day of the week) when things are encountered. Any chance of the Wowhead devs adding that into the addon and working that data into the database? (especially since we just had a big content patch (3.3) and Cataclysm is coming down the road)

Fished the entire shoreline in Hillsbrad (every pool) as well as the stream running north/south and the pond near Tauren Mill. After a full circuit, nothing. Moved to Zangarmarsh and hit every pool of debris in the major lakes. Pulled 10+ of each type crate. Fishing skill is 220's to start, now 260.

I decided to go with the recommendation to head to Stonetalon Mountains and fish at Windshear Crag. Worked like a charm, on the 2nd box I fished up, found the book :) I fished 2 pools of oil before the wreckage pool. Found one box in a pool of oil, but it was the box I found in the wreckage pool that contained my book. Total time fishing was maybe 5-10 minutes max. It took me longer fly and run there on my mount than it did to fish it up.

there are many pools of wreckage along the coast of Stranglethorn, and the wreckage usually drops crates. i haven't seen this listed as a good place to fish this book up, but i decided to fish a Bloodsail Wreckage pool as i passed by while questing. fished up 4 mithril bound trunks, 2 of which contained the book. i would think that with all the wreckage, STV would be a good place to get this on lower-level characters.

I can confirm that Zangarmarsh Floating Flotsam pools are extremely good for finding the journal. Simply look for the floating piles of wreckage and start fishing around the large, steaming Naga pumps. I found my journal in the first crate from the first wreckage pool on the first cast, and from reading the comments, it seems others have found theirs quickly, too.

Contrary to popular belief, you CAN fish a chest containing this book even if you have find fish ability. But, you just wont SEE the book. Mail any chests to either an alt or friend who does not have find fish, and they will see any books you find.
I tested this recently. My main already has 'find fish' and spent around 1hr or so fishing in feralas and wetlands. Fished out about 15 chests, 6 of which when mailed to alt actually had book.

I have caught it yesterday in Stranglethorn Vale. I've tried Zangarmarsh with Steam Pump Flotsams - no luck for 40 mins, and the floatsams are very rare. You can just go to SV, travel along the coast looking for Bloodsail Wreckages, however I have found the journal in a Firefin Snaffer school!

I tried Stonetalon Mountains twice to no avail, and I couldn't find hardly any wreckage pools at Zangarmarsh. Finally I got it at Southshore on my 2nd try (first wreckage pool had a trunk but no book, second pool had it!)

I just got a Watertight Trunk from the first Firefin school I fished east of Southshore. That trunk had my book. This was very easy and took only 5 minutes. Good luck!

Had to create an account to post a comment about this. I was very skeptical about finding this book, seemed almost impossible for me to do on my 80 Druid, took me forever before randomly getting it from the Fishing Daily.

After looking around again, searching through Thottbot and the other WoW sites, I came upon a few comments that said they found theirs in a pool off the dock in Astranaar and quite a few found theirs at the Oil pools in Stonetalon Mountains.

So, I ran my 19 Druid down to Astranaar, went to the first fishing pool at the dock. I extended the chat window for your view.

I ran down to Stonetalon to check it out and it looks like a nice farm spot for the level 19 Twinks. I know there's not much information out there, so I thought I'd post it. There's a place in Stonetalon called "Blackwolf River" and the mobs that patrol around are about 18-21, so any twink should be able to take care of themselves here. I've ran up and down the river a few times just to look around and only had to kill one or two things. Found about five wreckage pools and three oil spills so far.

its really easy. just go to serpent lake in zangar. and skim the edges there are tons of floating debris, just fishing in them. got my book really quick.

Right.. here is my 2 cents on this cursed item.
First of all, Oil spills does not give you this. Where fishing in Stonetalon for an hour, found 1 wreck, which gave me 2 trunks with no book. All the oil spills gave me where Firefin Snapper and the odd stranglekelp.
It seems to be like everything in this game, just a matter of RNG in your favor.
As my rogue got it on the first try, my Death knight just can't seem to find it. There is a lack of wreck schools, and when you finally find one, you have to get a trunk, AND you have to get the book to drop inside that trunk.
So that is 3 things that has to tip in your favor on the RNG. Had I not known that it is out there I would have given up by now.

Soo.. If you are having a hard time with this, and double, triple and quadruple checked that you have what it requires... just keep trying =/

Found this today on my level 41 warlock. Found it in the second schooner wreckage pool I ever fished in Hillsbrad on the coast filled with Naga contained in a water tight trunk on my third cast. I can confirm that you don't need specific fishing skill to fish this up. I was only fishing skill 7 when I found it.

I got it after 2 casts in a school of Greater Sagefish. I was really expecting to be there longer haha.

Everyone says that you should look for "floating wreckage" or similar. I fished all schools and I got it in a Raw Greater Sagefish school in Stonetalon mountains. To be more precise, Blackwolf river in Windshear Crag. Just flew up and down the river and fished the schools. Took about 10 minutes.

Chillwind Point (65, 36) school of Sagefish. Fished it two times both dropped a Watertight Trunk. Second trunk had the journal in it. Seems fishing schools is the way to go!

Fished one up from greater sagefish pools in Southfury river. It doesn't have to be fished out of floating wreckage exclusively, works for pools of fish as well. Easy to level up fishing with lures and auto loot on. But each time I fish up a Watertight Trunk, I turn auto-loot off. Once you learn to Find Fish you can't fish it (the journal) up again. Good for low level characters to make some side cash when a higher levels don't want to fish for it.

Be sure to check the firefin snapper and oily blackmouth nodes if you are looking near grom-gol. That is where I found an iron-bound trunk with this book.

Per the advice above, I went to Stone Talon Mountains and was in the water's near Windshear Hold. I was specifically at the water at 50, 45 (Mirkfallon Lake) and 62,50 (Blackwolf River). At Mirkfallon the Iron-Bound Trunk had a drop rate of 20% and Blackwolf River had a drop rate of 16% (Note there were more pools in the river as opposed to the lake). You are going to be fishing for greater sagefish pools. After about 20 minutes the journal spawned from about the 8th or 9th Iron bound trunk I looted from the sagefish pools.

This is probably just my mis-interpretation of it being a random drop. But I thought I would mention it anyway. I decided to start leveling my fishing skill on my level 30 mage today and started off of the southern coast of Westfall and worked my way up the coast to the north. Within getting my first 5 points in fishing from either a Firefin Snapper or Oily Blackmouth pool, I got one of those boxes.

The point I wanted to make is it seems to me like there is a higher chance of getting one of those trunks (or whatever they are called) when the bobber lands on the outer edge of the school of fish. 2 Shiny Baubles and 40 points later, I reached the northern part of the coast of Westfall (approxiamately 20 minutes) and I had reaceived around 4 of those trunks and got my Fish finding book.

If anyone else has noticed a similar pattern or cares to test it out, please post here and let the rest know what you discovered.

These Weather-Beaten Journal drop rate has been increased for Mithril Bound Trunk i think.I fished 20 of these from STV, didn't even looked into them with my main and directly sent em to my alt who have fishing skill but under 100.I looked all of the 20 crates and there are total 6 Weather-Beaten Journal in these trunks.So if anyone check STV coasts for mithril bound trunks,we can prove drop rates increased.

I have only skimmed through some of the comments but I could not find anything on this matter. I was fishing in the South-East lake in Wetlands looking for this book and could only find Sagefish Schools, no floating wreckage whatsoever. So now I'm thinking the schools and wreckages might share spawn timer, because I decided I would try to fish up some sagefish and minutes later of looking, a floating wreckage spawned.

Again, I don't know if this has been pointed out or I might just be completely wrong, but I thought I'd just give you my thoughts. Also, the Sagefish Schools have a slight chance of dropping the trunk which contains the book, so if you can't find any wreckages at this lake, just fish in the schools.

So ive been trying to get this for months and months from the daily quests because i never remember having this book then today i decided to get it for good went to zangarmarsh and looked for crate then after 5 crate decided to see if i already had the skill, and well ya i did. How to make lots of gold off these:
Step 1: Fish up lockboxes from wreckage. DO NOT OPEN THEM
Step 2: Make a bank alt or use a bank alt that doesn't have find fish, but has the fishing skill to open all the chests.
Step 3: Return the chests to your main once they have been revealed to have the journal
Step 4: Sell the chests for high prices

Tips for selling the chests:
Use trade, nobody will buy from AH
People will think it is a scam, so first give them the chest, then tell them to pay you.

Found this randomly today at 9:42pm Server time, wasn't looking for it and had no idea what it was. Just was doing a fishing daily in Stormwind, then I found the journal in a shiny bag of things. Discovered that it is quite a nice luxury :) By the way, fishing level was 372 using Nat's Lucky Fishing Pole and shiny baubles.

Tried to get one today. There was only one debris pool total in STV and neither of the two crates had this. Went to Zanga where there are lots of flotsam pools. I got it from the sixth crate (with one crate per pool caught).

this not a matter of luck that ive seen, simply fish pools of wreckage (not pools of fish). if you are qualified (ie, of high enough lvl in fishing) to get the book, it will be in the box you get when you fish the pool of wreckage. ive fished dozens of boxes on many toons, and once you hit about 85 or so in fishing skill you WILL get the book. the chance of book has nothing to do with who fished the box, but only who OPENS the box. Ive even gone so far as to stock boxes in my bank to give to lowbie alts when they hit 85 fishing skill so they dont have to go looking for themselves. skill fishing up to 85, get box from bank, open it and instant fishing book.

Well my boyfriend and I had found 1 while fishing about 3 months ago and didn't know what it was till we came here and looked it up. He got it, then we ended up deleting the toon it was on, we were upset but said oh well we will find it again someday then we went fishing about 2 1/2 months later in the same spot, and BAM he finds another one in a box in the same exact location lol that was about 2 weeks ago. Well today I was fishing in roughly the same area getting my fishing up and BAM I found another one. So we both have it now and which is great because we are trying to make complete toons.

After fishing this up on an alt in Dustwallow Marsh, I decided to get a copy for my main character and figure out the mechanics of how to get this book. While going about it, I managed to fish up 4 copies while fishing in Stranglethorn Vale over the course of an hour. It came in various chests that I fished up from debris as well as schools of fish such as oily blackmouths, firefin snappers, etc. Once I scribed it, I found out this not only picks up fishing nodes, but wreckage nodes as well. I also found out this other information:

1) If you don't immediately pick up the book from whatever chest it's in, you can fish up multiple copies of it.

2) If you don't immediately pick up the book from the chest it's in, you can also freely trade/mail the chest the book is in to other players. The receiving player can then pick up the book themselves and use it once their fishing skill is high enough.

3) If you pick up the book and learn the skill, any other copies you have in your possession will become invisible. However, invisible copies are still in whatever chests they came in, and if any of these chests are mailed/traded to other players who haven't already learned the Find Fish skill, copies of the book will be visible to them and they can freely pick it up if they wish.

4) Once you have the Find Fish skill, you won't come across another copy of this book via fishing nodes or debris.

Found mine in a Heavy Supply Crate fished from Steam Pump Flotsam located at 63,60 in The Lagoon of Zangarmarsh, just now.

Find Fish doesn't just show locations of various fish schools but also fishable objects such as Floating Wreckage and Steam Pump Flotsam. Should be quite helpful during the Extravaganzas.

While the book itself is BoP, the box (Curious Crate, etc) that contains it is not. You can mail, trade, or sell the box and the new owner of the box can loot the book from it.

Update:
Incidentally, just a moment ago I fished up a Curious Crate containing this book from a Feltail School in Zangarmarsh at 61,41.

I was running up and down the coast looking for a debris pool and didn't find any. So I started fishing up the firefin pools....I quickly got 2 tightly sealed trunks and the first one of those I opened had the journal and a blue ring!

I just fished this up in STV while skilling. Yesterday I fished the whole day and now I fish like 15 mins and I find this. Never heard of it but it's super. I'll be using this ability a lot!

The best part is that it dropped in Wetlands. Was a bit worried I'd have to fish my ass off in outlands or higher level places, but obviously you don't :)

Sigrah's advice is very good. I spent half an hour fishing floating wrekage in Zangarmarsh today and fished up about 20 crates of various types. I was opening them as I fished them to start with and found one of these. I read the advice here and decided to learn the book so I could make use of the ability but then no longer open crates. I sent the crates to my alts and had them open them until they got a journal. So many crates have these journals in (but of course I couldn't see them with my main who had already learned the journal). All my alts now have the journal.

Even chars whose fishing is low (I tested on a char whose fishing was 5) can see the book if they haven't already got it. You have to have fishing skill of 100 to learn it, but you can pick it up from a crate at lower skill.

Has anyone worked out if there is a character level limit on seeing it?

As stated before, the journal is BOP, but if you turn off your auto-loot or hold down the shift key, while your right clicking on the trunk or crate, you can view the items without picking them up. That way you can see what is in the crate then send the crate onto another alt or toon. I do this all the time when I'm fishing so that I can leave all the items in the crate rather than have them cluttering up my bags. Then I just unpack them at the bank.

I have fished the Journal out from the pond just south of Tarren Mill, 3 times on three different toons. The last one I sent on to my alt for his fishing pleasure since I already had the skill.

Found today inside a crate fished from high-level pools in terokkar forest. I'm assuming since it's Fishing(100) that you can find it in lower level pools. I guess blizzard put this in the game for the last patch. Man is it helpful, find fish faster and more mindlessly - just like finding thorium :-) Should be helpful on sundays in STV.

Wow, I just got mine fishing for Pure Water at the elemental plateau. Came in a curious crate. Very nice. It makes fishing much easier. You don't have to watch for the pools of fish, just check your map. Probably going to be very handy for the fishing contest.

I have gone to pretty far flung regions in search of floating wreakage (after I realized it had to be a "floating wreakage" spawn, as opposed to just pieces in random water) and after many trunks still no luck. At this point it had become one of those nagging things I wanted even if I didn't NEED it. I was getting a few casts in waiting for the boat on the pier in Booty Bay, and got a Mithril bound Trunk. I opened it later, and there it was, Practically no effort-Wow.

However, I never came across this book.

Now I play a rogue on lvl 43, and the first time I fished out a random floating wreckage in STV, I found this in a mithril bound trunk.

However, the ability doesn`t change that much, the fish schools are clearly visible in the water anyway *doh*.

Drysc (Blizzard) originally announced, "Fishermen, and Fisherladies, will be able to track fishing nodes, similar to herbalism and mining. The ability will be learned from a journal you can find in fished-up crates."

The new "Find Fish" ability is taught by a Weather-Beaten Journal. The ability makes "nearby fishing nodes appear on the minimap" - just like tracking abilities for minerals and herbs. The journal binds when picked up, so cannot be traded (unless the original crate is traded and the journal remains unseen). A fishing skill of 100 is required to learn the ability. The picture shows the ability being used to highlight the location of nearby pools. The only pools the ability does not show are Schools of Tastyfish, found during the Stranglethorn Extravaganza (likely a bug).

The table below summarises the crate types Weather-Beaten Journals can be found in. Sample catch sizes are very low, so read the results with caution. Once you have a journal in your inventory, or have learnt the Find Fish ability, you will no longer be able to find journals within crates. However, Torgon informs me that if you already know the Find Fish ability and catch a trunk/crate that would have contained a journal, the container will remain in your inventory. It can then be traded to someone that does not know the ability, and they will be able to retrieve a journal (again presumably another bug). All the tests were done by destroying journals as soon as they were found.

Thanks to Graargh for confirming Heavy Supply Crates as a source. Tightly Sealed Trunk very rarely contain journals (thanks Thayer). Coastal lock-boxes were not tested.

Curious Crates seem to give the best catch rate, with almost half of all crates containing a Weather-Beaten Journal. Curious Crates are caught from any pool in Outland - about 4% of the catch (this may have been increased slightly, since I got 7-8% on the test server, however the sample is very small so prone to error). No pools primarily contain Curious Crates, which means that if you specifically want a journal, it may be easier to fish the pools of wreckage in Azeroth containing Iron Bound, Mithril Bound or Watertight Trunks.

For those with little fishing skill, the easiest source of journals are Watertight Trunks, which are found in floating wreckage pools in Ashenvale, Hillsbrad Foothills, Stonetalon Mountains and Wetlands. All these areas requiring just 55 skill to cast, 150 to stop get-aways. Experienced fishermen and women should find a journal easily, while fishing pools for other fish - they aren't terribly rare!

I've caught this out of a chest while fishing in Dustwallow marsh on 3 different alts.

For all you lower levels who can't fish in Dustwallow just yet, I caught it with my level 15 hunter....if you go all the way up the shore from Ratchet toward Dustwallow, there are 3 spawn spots between North Watch Hold and Dustwallow that spawn Dustwallow level loot. That's where my low level 'toon caught hers.

I fished up two of these in two days along the west coast of Westfall.

I thought the second chest was bugged when it showed an empty loot box but wouldn't despawn. So I mailed it to my main and turns out it had another journal in it.

So if you find a chest that looks empty and you already have the Find Fish skill, it may have a hidden journal inside.

I farmed the pools containing Furious Crawdad in Terokkar Forest for TWO days resulting in only 4 curious crates (none of which containing a Weather-Beaten Journal). I went to Zangarmarsh by Serpent Lake and skimmed the top of the water looking for debris (looks like wood on water). I got the journal on my second cast off of a Heavy Supply Crate. Highly recommend going there.

Hah, so I was reading this yesterday and decided that last night I would go and try to get this. I hit up Hillsbrad (which was appropriate for my fishing skill). I was tracing the river down to the ocean, saw a school of fish so I tossed my line in. My first pull on that school of fish I got a chest with the book in it. I was dumbfounded. Went through Silverpine forest today, knocking down a few local nasties for a Quest, ended up on the coast north of the Sepulcher. Found some Floating Wreckage and remembered hearing something about being able to find boxes in them by fishing. I had always before assumed the floating junk was just eye candy on the realm, and had never bothered with it. This time, I figured I'd take a shot at fishing for a Box. I fished the floating junk until it disappeared, ended up with 5-6 fish and 5 Tightly Sealed Trunks. Opened them up back in Thunder Bluff, annnnddd... There was a Journal in one of them! So the Book CAN be had in very low level trunks and areas. Lucky day for me, first time ever deliberately fishing for any kind of box and got a Journal in one.

after I realized what a fishing node was, i found it in my third chest off the coast of Tanaris. I guess I got lucky... much funner fishing the nodes than the empty sea...

Got this out of a Mithril Bound Trunk, i was goign to Gadgetzan for ZF and i saw a Floating Wreckage and i was like "why not" and the first time i fished in it mithril bound trunk dropped and this puppy was inside i love it!

Just went to Hillsbrad and fished in the south nodes. Got the journal in my first Watertight Trunk, which came after like 20-25 casts. It took around 7 minutes to find it. If your skill is below 225 with no gear, Hillsbrad is one of your best shots, otherwise, I think that the drop rate is higher in Outland.

If you want this, as you see water tight trunks drop it often

If you're a lowbie, you can go to Hillsbrad Foothills, there's so many nodes of sagefish so close together you can level your skill up realll easy, and they often provide water tright trunks!

This way, you get levels and a great great skill

all my alts have this, it's so easy

I got mine from a pool in Faldir's Cove in The Arathi Highlands(There's a cave behind Stromgarde Keep that leads you to the cove). I got it from an Ironbound Trunk on my first try, the place was reccomended by a friend. No one usually fishes there so you can have all the nodes to youreslf. Good luck! :D

lol i was in stonetalon mountains and saw a school of sagefish and i thought id fish it so i could get the old gnome and the sea achievement and i had just started fishing so i thought id be there for awhile then on like my 5th cast i get the achievement so i thought i caught a sagefish i check my inventory and i got a watertight chest i opened it and viola i got the journal

I realized I was never going to find this in Northrend so I went back to the old country. An easy place to get the journal is in Stonetalon Mountains on the Blackwolf River and Cragpool Lake (eastern side of country). There are lots of oily pools with trunks in them, just go back and forth, it took me 5 or 6 pools to find it. Monsters are level 15-30 in Stonetalon.

The Zangermarsh instructions are a little confusing. You need to go to the Instance entrance lake. Circle the lake until you find the small floating pieces of boxes and lumber by the shore. Fishing into this area will produce crates. It took me about 1/2 hour chasing 4 different piles of lumber. Caught about 10 crates and lots of other junk. Got the journal. Easy Peasey!

Anyone can get this book, as long as u dont ever read it u will continue to get it. I have sold them still in the trunk for 50g I mean u do get an achievment for it. just dont read it and u will get it alot.lol gl

Got mine today just south of Southshore from a Watertight Trunk I fished out of a school of Sparse Oily-Blackmouth. Took me a little while but don't give up all you fishers out there! Good Luck! :)

I fished the a Steam-Pump Slotsam in the Bloodscale Grounds of Zangermarsh. I think I casted 3 times. The first cast I got trash loot, 2nd I got a Curious Crate, no Weather-Beaten Journal. The 3rd cast I got a 2nd Curious Crate, and that had my Weather-Beaten Journal. I am sure that most of the drop rate above were a spot on at one time, but I personaly find that over time the drop rates change alot. Maybe I am just lucky, (I doubt it). Hope this helps. Found this in a Mithril Bound Trunk I had on my character BEFORE the pre-patch launched. Confirmed that they drop from those types of containers and also confirmed containers don't have assigned loot until you open them.

I had randomly found one of these on my 70 alt. So I learned the skill, very excited. Fishing skill is at like 370 now.

I sent every single crate I fished up to my bank alt (level 6). I turned off auto-loot, and carefully opened each crate, hoping to get another copy for another alt with 300 fishing.

I didn't see a single copy show up among many crates, Curious or Heavy Supply. Whether coincidental or not, I don't know, but I decided to go learn Fishing on my bank alt. And I fished to skill level 10. I thought maybe having Fishing learned would make the book appear.

I then went back to my mailbox on my bank alt, with Fishing skill 10, and the 3rd Curious Crate I opened had a Weather Beaten Journal inside. Since auto loot was off, I can close the crate and send it to my other alt.

So...if you have a character with Find Fish already learned, send the crates to an alt or bank alt that also knows Fishing. Turn off auto loot and peek inside the crate. I have a feeling you need to know Fishing to see this journal at all.

Fished it inside a "Heavy Supply Crate" around Zangarmash. Zangarmash has many crates fishing pools.
