This fish is related to part 2 of the secret fish achievement series, Pesci segreti e dove trovarli.
To start this you'll need to complete part 1.

The goggles:
With the Occhiali dei Pesci Segreti buff applied a small fish in a bubble will spawn somewhere within 40 yards of you. If you have sound on you'll hear bubbles when it spawns then 5-10 seconds later the fish will become visible at which point you'll be able to click it. The fish can be clicked while mounted, you do not need to be in water for it to spawn and it will spawn every 25-30 seconds.

Best way to do this is find a spot that is flat and with few surrounding objects (trees, rocks, etc) and just spin your camera around until you see the bubble.

The Fish!
Each time you click the puffer you'll be given a random fish, most of the time it will be the white "junk" fish for whichever area you're in as well as the occasional grey item, with the exception of Dalaran where you'll commonly get coins usually caught from the eventide fountains.

Catchrate is quite low for many of these so expect to spend a fair amount of time for this.

I've split the fish into different catergories.

The common:
These fish can be caught anywhere at any time of the day, save these lot for last as you'll probably get most if not all of them hunting the others.

If you're still missing these after you catch the others, the best places to catch these are on the floating islands, like the ones scattered around Outland Nagrand (45.9, 59.9). The zone exclusive:
These fish can only be caught in specific zones and sometimes even in very specific areas within zones.
9. Merluzzo Sangue Marcio - Nazmir, Zul'Nazman.
10. Pesce Storico di Giada - Jade Forest.
11. Sogliola Tonante - Isle of Thunder.
12. Pesce Pagliaccio del Kirin Tor - Dalaran (Broken Isles/Northrend).
13. Sgombro Meccanizzato - Mechagon.
14. Delizia della Regina - Nazjatar.
15. Manapinna Antico - Suramar. Anywhere in the Suramar city harbour. (Credit to Roguezs).
16. Pesce Prigioniero - Tol Barad (PvP area). Anywhere in the zone, the bridge that connects the two islands is a great place for this one, just make sure you're on the PvP area side of it (check minimap).
17. Pesce di Fiordo Spinato - Howling Fjord.
18. Liscavile Morto - Argus, Krokuun and Antoran Wastes. (Credit to Padwarle and Neryssa).
19. Tortolliano da Acquario - Drustvar, under Anyport in the underwater Tortollan bar called 'The Drunk Tank'.
20. Platessa dell'Aria Rarefatta - Neverest Pinnacle, Kun-Lai Summit. (Credit to Qaccy and Pungyo).
21. Guardingo del Pozzo - Mount Hyjal, in the lake under Nordassil.
22. Pesciolino Annegato - Drowned Lands (46, 50) in Stormsong Valley. (Credit to Bobins666).
Note: With the exception of the Tank Deweller (Fish 19), these are confirmed locations and may not be the only location within the zones where they can be caught. For the Tortollan Tank Deweller, I was only able to catch it once I was in the very specific sub-zone (where the name changes above the minimap).

For those suffering from woeful luck with the rarer fish, like the Platessa dell'Aria Rarefatta, this was discovered by Asmundr.

To everyone who is having trouble looting some fish. You need to approach the places like Neverest and Nordrassil on foot without a flying mount (There is a small path just before the Neverest peak) Then the 100% dropchance Fishes don't bug out and are lootable once more (Thin Air Flounder and Well Lurker) Alternatively just use the goggles when standing at those places when they are off CD.

If you're still having issues, clearing your bags of all secret fish (vendor or delete them) may also fix it.

The time scheduled:
These fish can only be caught within certain times, while one is active, the other is not. Whichever fish is active at the time can be caught in any zone.
23. Pesceluna Elusivo - Night only. 9:30pm to 8am.
24. Assorbisole Dorato - Day only. 8am to 9:30pm.
Note: We're not sure on the specific day/night switch over time, the above is just based on the times we've been catching them. If you catch these outside of the posted times let me know. Make sure its server time, not your local time.

The dead:
These fish can only be caught while the player is dead. Once you're a ghost these fish can be caught in any zone. (Credit to FenixInfinito).
25. Fantasma Velato
26. Pescevitreo Occhiuto
27. Galleggiante Silenzioso
28. Salmone Spirituale
Best place to catch these on any floating island, like the one directly behind the southern bank of Broken Isles Dalaran. Suicide by flying up and dismounting. This zone has ghost flying and if you stand on the edge of the island the fish will spawn in an arc around your character, shown here in green: https://i.imgur.com/vrIYGgB.jpg

The buffed:
29. Pesce Specchio Verde - Requires the Dipinto di Verde buff from the Mechagon mechanocat painting station (63, 42). This can be applied by walking over the green puddle on the station or having another player throw a Vescica Piena di Vernice Verde at you. (Credit to Sishrot).

The sporadic:
30. Pinnascarto Rimosso - Can be caught in the "future" version of Mechagon that Cromie sends you to for the quest L'altro posto. Unfortunately this daily is only available sporadically. (Credit to Lacrit).

I caught 3 of these in about 5 minutes in the "swamp" area (40,49) of Tol Barad (where the hourly world PVP event happens) while trying to get the Prison Fish which dropped a few minutes later. Weird. 12:30am realm time.

I had a theory about the Golden Sunsoaker and the Elusive Moonfish that the time period they rotate on is based on GMT-7, which is the time zone California and Blizzard HQ is in. For clarification, I play on Barthilas which's server time is GMT+10, same as Australia's Melbourne/Sydney.
To test this theory I started collecting fish on a floating island in Outland Nagrand at 0:00 am GMT+10 which is 7:00 am GMT-7, this is how It went.

GMT+10 = Melbourne/Sydney, GMT-7 = California and Blizzard HQ
Start: '0:00 am GMT+10 / 7:00 am GTM-7'
Between '0:00 am GMT+10 / 7:00 am GTM-7' and '1:30 am GMT+10 / 8:30 am GTM-7' I caught 2 Elusive Moonfish
At '1:54 am GMT+10 / 8:54 am GTM-7' I caught my first Golden Sunfish

Obviously this needs more testing, but based on these finding I'm pretty confident that these fish are indeed based on the GMT-7 Time Zone and people should use that time zone when determining when to hunt them.

I picked up an Elusive Moonfish at /way 55.15, 90.92 underwater on the ocean floor in Suramar Bay while fishing for the Ancient Mana Fin and it was 640pm server time. Possibly in areas where its night all the time you can get it whenever?

I used Horridon's arena in Throne of Thunder to find this fish. I found it at 9:39pm server time. This spot is fantastic for the "ordinary" fish not zone specific, because you get BfA fish which have a value on AH (at least when converted to fish oil). You can mount up, stand in the middle, and there's practically nothing blocking your view in all directions (always spawns inside the walls). Highly recommended farming spot! I now have the achievement.

I fished mine up at 6 am server time in Nazjatar. I like this spot because the 'common' secret fish are all Nazjatar specific and it's a good way to stock up on them. It requires patience - if you count all the time I was chasing bubbles it was well into multiple hours before it showed up.

I've been trying to get this fish for 5 days now. I've tried everywhere that people have recommended, I've tried everytime of night and day. I've deleted all the secret fish in my bags, I've tried not approaching on a mount, etc. And I still dont have this fish! It's also the last one that I need and I'm going crazy

Some of the contributors to these comments, the ones who say they got it in five minutes at Tol Barad's swamp and so on, should head to the nearest casino. :-). I spent about 6 hours, always fishing between 9:30 pm and 8 am server time, While "harvesting" the bubbles looking for it in the swamp outside the Tol Barad instance. during that time I caught about 30 prison fish, and at least 3 or 4 of all the other fish that are not location independent. Finally, at 5 am server time during my third session trying for it it popped. I guess that's why part of it's name is "Elusive". Oh, and I did have other fish in my bags, and did use travel form (on my druid), and sometimes emptied my bag of other fish, and sometimes went on foot...none of those things make any difference, you just have to have perseverance.

I can confirm that I caught the Elusive Moonfish at 8:57pm server time this week.

While I caught most of the common fish in the Proving Grounds Scenario in Pandaria, it took a couple days of trying other spots for the Elusive Moonfish.

I tried the Proving Grounds, Tol Barad, and Dalaran for a couple days but finally got it in Nagrand on the highest floating island south of Halaa after maybe 3 of 4 bubbles.

I logged in on the Tol Barad area around 10:15pm server time today. First fish picked up, it was this Elusive Moonfish. Most importantly, I fished and fished and fished from around Midnight server time until approximately 5:30am server time yesterday/today, and never got the Prisoner Fish or this Elusive Moonfish. I did this same thing the previous day too. I would venture to guess fishing from 9pm to Midnight is a safer bet to capture this slippery bugger though! I feel like I was waiting til too late to start my hunt. Happy Secret Fish Seeking :)

After trying for days in old Nagrand on the floating islands and elsewhere, I decided to got to battle Horridon in the Throne of Thunder. After about 6 bubbles realm time of 18:25 @ Emerald Dream, I looted this very elusive fish. IMO, visit Horridon, try for the mount and pet and potter about for your very own Elusive Moonfish :) BTW, the floating islands in old Nagrand are great for all your common fish needed for this achievement.

I personally discovered this fish at /way 83 29 in Boralus Harbor, just near the boat path, on the sea floor, at 0536 server. I was swimming around as a remora with my Canna da Pesca di Sottoluce. This was the final fish for my Pesci segreti e dove trovarli. I'd spent one hour trying to catch it beforehand on land the previous night (post-2130 server), at the top of one of the nearby mountains.

I should note that I acquired its twin, the Assorbisole Dorato, casually while searching for some of the zone-specific fish. This took a good day of effort, but was definitely one of the easier grinds I've done in this game.

To add to the confusion of when this fish can drop ...... This was the last fish that I needed for my achievement. I had put the Secret Fish Goggles on during raid the other night. While my raid was waiting for a pull, I walked around looting the secret fish. I wound up picking up both the Golden Sunsoaker and the Elusive Moonfish in the same bubble, around 9:30-9:45 pm EST (8:30-8:45 pm server - US-Korgath).

I have been working on the Secret Fish and Where to Find Them achievement for a couple of days now, all that was left for me to catch were the Elusive Moonfish and the Golden Sunstoaker. I had used one very helpful guide to help with this achievement. I played it back a couple of times to ensure that it was indeed just time specific. I am on Llane which is +3 in the Valley Of The Four Winds near the Galleon spawn area, personal preference area because it is a wide area with no interruptions or aggro. I had been here I believe half an hour so and was reading the comments on this thread getting discouraged by reading the times that it took other commenters, but I wasn't going to give up until the time was up. Finally, at 6:34 a.m. server time, I caught it!

If you're tired of the typical locations mentioned for this fish and you have Legion flying, there's a nice little spot in Stormheim where I caught mine.

/way 52.7 38.3 on top of the massive stone pillar. Just stand on the corner furthest from the wall and it works just like a floating island.

Caught the Elusive Moonfish at 11:20 pm (server time) on Norgannon (NA) though it still took me about an hour and a half to get it. Also got more than one of each common fish as well during the hunt.

Thought I'd throw this out there. I needed an Pesceluna Elusivo (elusive indeed!) and wasn't having any luck. Running out of time (again!) I remembered having great luck with the "buy one get one" aspect of the Pesce Storico di Giada, so I headed to the same spot (42.55, 62.27 - facing a gorilla - bubbles easily seen). As of 7/19/20 these bubbles are still double loot and I very quickly got my moonfish.

I don't know if this helps anyone, or if anyone else wants to try and confirm it but I caught one at 18:35 server time, while trying to get my Tiny Whale at the Dalaran floating island. At that point I had already caught 15 Golden Sunsoakers and the ONLY thing I did out of ordinary, was using my Void Totem toy, as I was going through my collected toys (because bored).
I guess if you still have other ''general area'' fish you need to catch, and it's not the right time for the Moonfish, would not hurt to try.

To save time for anyone else who had the same idea as myself, using the toy Ombroscaglia or Pozione Nera Come l'Inchiostro to make it midnight does not make it possible to obtain Pesceluna Elusivo during the day. I continued to receive Assorbisole Dorato when tested.

finally caught mine this morning 8:23am server time on the bridge in jade forest. farmed nagrand for several hours last night, did the throne of thunder, farmed the swamp at tol barad until like 2am last night and decided I'd catch it on the other end bc I'm not a night owl. Was the last fish I needed! I thought it would switch around 8am but was able to catch it afterwards.

Got the bubble on top of Heart of Darkness in Nazmir 50,57, great very fast spawn, just sit on top wait till you hear the bubble noise, fly up about 20ft then back down and it will force spawn it on the platform under you, highly reccomend this area for all the fish you can catch anywhere, the bubbles spawn extremely fast.

After 3 hours in tol barad looking for this fish i decided to try my luck elsewhere and looted it at 10.58 server time (eu ravencrest) at 70, 71 on top of a floating island in nagrand. all i got left now is the Golden Sunsoaker and i heard its even more elusive than the elusive moonfish.

Got all the "Common" quality fish I needed during this time + Jade Story Fish. Pretty efficient spot as you always get two fish with each ball.
Dropped at 14.12 after about 25 minutes the day after.

Dropped at: 21:07 UTC
Zone: The Jade Forest
/way 55.69, 89.89
Time spent: 30 minutes with no drop around 20.00. Dropped after 4 minutes when I tried again right after 21.00

I'm sure you can get this anywhere just looking at all the comments, I personally got Pesceluna Elusivo in Tol Barad this morning at 06:04 server time and then another one on the Dalaran floating island at 06:14 while looking for common fishes. So for easy farming I would suggest the Dalaran floating islands!

The day before I got Assorbisole Dorato in Tol Barad at around 07:50 server time, so at some point from 06-08 is where the cut off is.

This was my last fish. I finally caught it in Orgrimmar in The Valley of Wisdom just moments after logging in for another night of trying. I'd say I probably put about 3 hours into that last fish alone previously. Great reward though.

I am starting to believe that this fish might be bugged in 9.0.5. I have been farming it since the patch came out and have not been able to get a single one. I have acquired high double digit amounts of all other fish, even the one you fish during the daytime, but the elusive moonfish won’t drop. I have spent nights farming it for multiple days. I’ve talked to many others and none of them had to farm it for 24+ hours.

Got this fish in Outland Nagrand, at 60 91, around 09:15pm server time (21:15) (10:15pm Local time), on Silvermoon-EU. I was doing this achievement with another player. Each of us staying at the end of the island so no need to run around, both having the googles buff.

LE: The other player got it at 09:25pm (21:25) (10:25pm Local time) ... 10 minutes after my drop.

So my favorite place to fish for this one is Legion Dalaran's Krasus Landing. I just caught it but the best part is I also got a TON of those coins for Una monetina per i tuoi pensieri, Argento cittadino , & C'è dell'oro in quella fontana!. You can kill two birds with one bubble.

I just got it today at 18:58 server time in the Jade Forest area. Apparently it can also drop before 21:30.

Got mine after 2 tries in Forlorn forest in the snowy area beneath old Dalaran (Crystal.f) (cord 31.73/32.89)

Kaskala in the Borean Tundra is the honey hole. Went there and got 7 of the "anywhere" fish in an hour, then went back during "evening hours" and got the moonfish within 5 casts.

SHOCKED - I got this one when I exited the Trial of Vale - Kill Helya raid on Heroic. I actually got multiple l bubbles there in the waiting area of the raid.

Late to getting this. The last one needed, grabbed it at 9:50pm server after 5 minutes in the Caverns of Time (during the Anniversary Event). I didn't count but maybe 8-10 bubbles to complete.

this one sure hold up to its name of ELUSIVE! found on one of the tall platforms in Valdrakken, the one closest to the transmog building surrounding the aspects. Found aprox 11:45pm June 13th, server/est time on earthenring. it was my last one to find too! probably took me about 1 hour to snag last night once i started on that platform, but had been trying for 6 days!

UGH Days of trying. Tol Barad. 5:20 server time. Riding around in circles. This jerk fish was at 36:49.

Took me 30 minutes at 62, 68 in Valdrakken. Location has no impact on spawn, time of day (night in this case) is the only relevant factor. This spot is much more pleasant than Tol Barad swamps. Happy hunting!

Thought you could only catch this from 9:30pm?
I was actually trying to catch the Golden Sunsoaker in the area stated in Kun Lai Summit (/way 75,44, 67,23), but caught the moonfish instead. So this shows that the area is of no relevance, possibly?

Probably a bit "spot on" - but I wasn't having luck at other places mentioned in comments. Got mine after exactly 13 minutes of spinning around in the middle of the Temple of Elune Courtyard in Val'Sharah. 12:25 server time.

I spent 6 hours farming this one night, night 2 at 10:44 est (9:44 server according to in game clock) I was able to get it on the Nagrand island. I was in the area for 45 minutes using my goggles.

1 - I WAS mounted when I looted.
2 - I HAD other secret rare fish in my bags.
3 - I did try this location as well as Nazmir, Tol Barad, and a list of other locations last night picking up other location specific fish.

I fished in 15 minute increments for the Elusive Moonfish. The time I caught it was about 10:15PM Server Time. It wasn't dark out. I used the Valdrakken platforms for convenience. All in all, it took me an hour and a half of fishgrabbing.
