Whether this is correct or not remains to be seen and as always, Blizzard could change how it is obtained. Turns out they did change it!

Edit: As of 4.0.3b, the recipe is learned when you find it using archaeology. 450+ arch is required and the produced vial is now BoE making it the alchemy equivalent of the chopper/Mechano hog. As this is not classified as a flask, elixer or transmutation, it will not be subject to any of those specializations and I look forward to maxing archaeology trying to find this.

Edit^2: 4 years later, I've quit wow after having never found this. This was in my opinion, the worst RNG dependent drop to have ever been implemented in the game.

Not necessarily 24,000g. If you're guild is at Level 24 it will reduce the price down to 21,600 gold. And if Yasmin is affiliated with a Reputation, and you get to Exalted with them, that would bring the price of 8 Sands of Time down to 16,800. Of course, we don't know whether she is or not, we'll see how it all plays out.

TL;DR: To make Vial of the Sands, you may only need 16,800 Gold to get the 8 Sands of Time, instead of ~~24,000g~~.

This comes from the Canopic Jar, a Tol'Vir common item. The Canopic Jar is now a white quality item, so it shouldn't escape your attention so easily.

There is a total of sixteen (16) Tol'vir digsites (up from the previous nine) in the game, all located on Kalimdor (Uldum) and you can only start getting Uldum excavation opportunities after hitting 450 Archaeology. The recipe will only drop for Alchemists, is not a guaranteed drop and is Bind on Pickup, however the mount associated with it (Vial of the Sands) is not. Given the rarity of Tol'Vir excavation points (~16/56) you're going to be flying around Kalimdor a *lot*. Non-mages, utilize your hearths as best as you can; the major home cities have their respective ports to Hyjal and Uldum.

Horde, I advise using your hearth to Orgrimmar when you have 3 or more projects in the northern zones (Ashenvale and up) and grabbing a Ring of the Kirin Tor so you can use the Caverns of Time portal in the Violet Citadel. This gives you mobility all over the continent on very short cooldowns.

Alliance can use Stormwind as their home point to fulfill the same purpose as Org (port to Hyjal for the north digs).

This task is RNG (project) wrapped in RNG (dig site) coated with RNG (pleasedeargoddroptherecipe), but with the changes that've been made to Archeology (~~3-6~~ UPDATED* fragments (at max level) per successful survey) it should be a little more bearable. Even with these changes, this is a task only for the patient.

Can we assume that if you have high enough alchemy and construct the Canopic Jar that it's 100% chance? or is there still some sort of drop rate associated with this? A Handy Guide for those who haven't started Archaeology:

Training Arch allows you to see Dig Sites on the two old world continents.
There will always be 4 Dig Sites on a continent at any given time
Once you mine out a dig site it respawns at a randomly selected location on that continent
The Canopic Jar that drops this recipe is completed from Tol'vir Digsites
Tol'vir dig sites are only in Uldum, and require a skill of 450 to spawn
~~There are about 6 Tol'vir dig sites and 54 across all of Kalimdor, meaning when you mine out a Kalimdor dig site it has a 1/12 chance of spawning a Tol'vir dig site~~
There are now 16 Tol'vir dig sites in Uldum, out of 69 in Kalimdor, and which contain 9 to 18 fragments
As of 4.1(?) dig sites spawns are now weighted based on whether or not you have any remaining rares to be completed. For Canopic Jar farming this usually means,the spawn chance of night elf dig-sites will be lowered once you complete all of their artifacts, causing your digsites to be significantly more focused in southern Kalimdor, reducing travel time. This benefit is largely lost - however- once you complete the fossil rares; equalizing your fossil and nelf spawn rates.
The Jar is one of 7 common Tol'vir artifacts requiring 45 fragments each to complete, you will not be able to get repeats until you've completed them all once
The Canopic Jar has a, currently unknown, % chance to drop the recipe. Most reports are of people not getting it on the first or second try, so likely less than 50%. Your mileage may vary, I gave up after 28.

I got the recipe yesterday from archeaology Tol'vir ( Vaso Canopo )

it contained the item

i already made it 3 times, one for me, one for a guy paying me 10k, and the last one for the auctionhouse - 150.000g buyout
costs to made overall ~72.000 (30k must buy NPC goods - rest buying stuff from the ah)

NO cooldown ... and tradeable... and useable for every race and for every profession - you dont have to be an alchemist

Rare drop from a rare drop from 45 archeology fragments. It is likely that Blizzard outdid themselves with this mount. I find it an interesting dynamic when comparing the amount of time farming gold (mats) and the amount of time needed to farm a raid that this mount is the lonely man's path to epeen flailing that you mostly only see with the hardcore raiding guilds doing end game heroic raids. The difference...BoE! Now people can pay you for epeen! The alchemist that has this recipe will be quite famous on your server.

It really would have made more sense for this to be a reward for an achievement (this seems like a good candidate) like certain cloaks in WotLK. As it is now it's far too random.

I got my first Canopic Jar on Sunday, now four days later I finally got a second one. Both without a recipe. I like to think I have more patience than most, but I can't stand the thought of four more days of spending all my in-game time doing archaeology for another chance of seeing this drop.

I've decided to give up for now (yes, QQ) and wait for someone luckier than me to get the recipe so I can pay them to craft the vial for me instead.

Got the Canopic Jar today.
No recepie inside :( Just a gray item.
My skill in Alchemy and Archaeology is 525 so no trouble there. Just bad luck.
"Just" have to wait until I can solve it again.

Should you have enough Tol'vir points to solve the Canopic Jar and not be at max Alch or Arch lv I suggest you wait with the solving. The excess solving points will be transfered to the next solvable item ... and the next ...
I've had Night Elf at 190/35 and that just meant I could solve five artifacts in a row.

The spawning of more than 3 fragments per dig sped up the Tol'Vir hunt quite a bit.

I'm just opened my third Canopic Jar, to find my third mummyfied organ... frustrating.
I'm now at 12 grey items and the epic ring solved so far.

Anyone know if you need to have Alchemy as a profession in order for this to drop? I would much rather farm for this until I actually find it prior to dropping a 525 profession, as opposed to dropping a 525 profession, leveling alchemy and never actually finding it.

If so, have there been any blue posts regarding this, or is there any proof?

While it may or may not require being an Alchemist to receive the recipe, my Alchemy was only at 450 when I got the recipe in my 2nd jar. So you don't have to stress about maxing out your Alchemy before opening your jars.

This mechanic is incredibly frustrating.
I got no recipe from my first jar, and I am on my 9th common since completing one of each of the 7 Tor'Vir commons, none of which have been a second jar. I have done 3-4 of a bunch of others but no jar. I estimate that I have farmed 150 + 12 x 45 fragments since my first and only jar thus far...

I am starting to get very very very annoyed with Blizzard.

Oh, and I'm sitting on all the mats as well :(

YAY! i have farmed archeology for the last 2-3 days and today i got skill enough to get Tol'vir artifacts the reason i farmed this was because of the alchemy mount witch comes from a recipie in a jar which can when you appear when you solve Tol'vir artifacts (Uldum only)

when the Jar finally apeared i ofc farmed till i got it and when i opened the recipie was in! I have prob been extreemly lucky to get this in first Jar and i have no idea if theres any other on my server who also have it, now i have started my farming on mats for the mount and hopefully ill get this mount in a few days.

I have opened 5 jars so far and all of which did not contain the recipe. It took more than 100 hours already just to get my 5 jars. It seems the drop rate is not that great after all.

edit1: 6th jar still no recipe.
edit2: 9th jar still no recipe. about 130 hours of digging now. can this get any more retarded?
edit3:10th jar still no recipe (this jar alone took a little more than 20 hours).
edit4: 11th jar no recipe. stopped counting hours. Completed a total of 77 commons and 3 rares for tol'vir. Currently have 11829 nelf fragments, 4946 fossil, and 1407 troll with everything in those race obtained.
edit5: 12th jar finally got the recipe. total time spent on getting this recipe is probably in the 300 hrs zone.

So I've read a bunch on this and everywhere people are saying "yes you need max alch" "No you don't" etc etc. Does anybody know if your Archaeology has to be maxed, or can it be obtained without the 525? I'm around 476 right now, and my first Tol`vir artifact is a Canopic Jar. Kinda scared to solve it though since my archaeology isn't maxed. I'd hate to open it just to find out later that Archaeology HAS to be at 525 =/

As soon as I hit 450 on my Archaeology I went to Kalimdor and started to farm sites there to get Uldum ones to appear, my second item was the Canopic Jar and I got the recipe first try.

to CheezeBurga, I dont know if having 525 Alchemy matters or not, but if it does, it would make sence as getting this recipe reminds me of getting recipes for cooking, they drop of mobs sometimes in raids, but not unless your someone in that raid that needs it and can learn it i.e. has the lvl requirement to learn it so it appears.
Also reminds me of the heavy frostweave book in Wrath , couldn't get it to happen as a drop until you have the required lvl of first aid.

My Alchemy btw is 525 and I had it done first before leveling up my Archaeology so that might hold true, it would make sence. That or I just got damn lucky getting it on my first try.

Is this really BoP this recipe? Cause I've been levelling Arch to get my friend his cause he hates it, and in return he'll make me a Vial after his own. Can I not find this? Cause that'd be REALLY stupid of them to do, force people to level a prof they don't like to get theirs....

I first started taking alchemy because I heard of this "alchemy exclusive" mount. After getting my Alchemy to 525, I figured out that the mount became BOE instead of just for alchemists, which made it "just another pricy mount". Kind of took away from it's luster, but then again, still worth getting, so I set out to farm the recipe. I am now 5 jars in, with no recipe. While other professions have been getting cool "exclusive" to that profession mounts, (i.e. magic carpets and the turbo-charged flying machine, WoW have blessed alchemists this expansion with a "headache" while trying to track down the recipe for the vial. Thanks Blizz.

This item is starting to drive me insane...

I've made a total of 46 common Artifacts, including 4 Jars, as well as 3 rares and have yet to find my recipe.

Sitting on about 2k fossil and 5k Night Elf fragments without any use, scared to even think about the time I've spent on this (way beyond the point I can just give up).

Honestly I would be very surprised if Blizzard didn't do something to make it easier to obtain.

oh, and there are 9 Tol'Vir digsites and for Alliance it's probably a good idea to put Hearthstone in Stormwind for the Hyjal and Uldum portals

The following claims are in no way to be taken as "If I get 1000 digsites I am gaurenteed this recipe." That is stupid. Please, please, please, please don't call gambler's fallacy because it is irrelevant. I have put quite a bit of thought into my algorithms and the function of this simulation is an accurate model given the assumptions I have presented. The simulation was a console program written in C#.

Since I am a nerd I decided to make a simulation to figure out how many dig sites it will take on average to receive this item.

Simulation Conditions:

There were 10,000 players. All Dwarves.
Each player has completed EVERY rare artifact, and when the simulation began had a 1/7th chance of having the canopic jar in their journal.
Each player started with 0 tol'vir fragments
The simulation was conducted 100 times, and the results averaged.
Each player gave up after surveying 10,000 dig sites.
Every player stopped after recieving the pattern.

Fairly reasonably understood assumptions that this simulation makes:

There are 54 dig sites in Kalimdor and 6 Tol'Vir dig sites. There is an equal probability of getting any dig site no matter the race or position on map. Dig sites are chosen after the digsite has been cleared and it is equally possible to get the same digsite as it is any other unoccupied digsite.
There is an equal chance of getting 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 (dwarf bonus) fragments with each loot.
Each player used as many keystones as possible from looting artifacts.
Each player has completed every rare artifact, and thus will only receive common artifacts.
It is possible to get the same artifact twice in a row and there is a 1/7 chance of getting the canopic jar.
Every player attempted to maximize the chance of recieving a tol'vir digsite by always digging up a tolvir digsite when one appeared.

Some bold assumptions I made on the nature of drop rates:

This recipe has a 15% drop rate from the canopic jar regardless of level. Current data on drop rate is not statistically accurate so your guess is as good as mine. This seemed reasonable to me.
Keystones are a 10% drop from each fragment cache. Whatever. I'll do some testing and see what I can come up with.

My results were as follows:

Successfull finds: 99.99% (out of 1,000,000 players, some gave up after 10,000 dig sites.)
1107.5 dig sites surveyed on average.

This is about three times as many digsites as it takes to get from 1-525 archaeology. Prepare to spend a long time farming this one, folks.

These figures could be wildly inaccurate. I had to make some big assumptions with drop rates because nobody has any data. I might make a histogram or some other fancy stats once I find better data on things like drop rates. I would like to remind anybody who feels an urge to comment to read the disclaimer and the entire post before commenting, for pete's sake.

Was extremely shocked that i did get it, after reading comments from people that they were opening 8 jars and still not getting anything. Archaeology does NOT need to be maxed, I just got this on my alchemist tonight (valkiyre, Sisters of Elune realm) at 501 skill. My alchemy was maxed,. though others have said alchemy also doesn't need maxed.

From reading everything, I got very very very lucky, my second Tol'Vir dig started the jar, and about 4 hours later I completed it and got the recipe.

I also had an exceptionally horrible rare creation rate from archaeology prior to getting it - either it was making up for lost time, or I just used up all my luck for a year.

45 tol'vir commons, 2 tol'vir rares , and just finished my 5th canopic jar with no recipe. Has anyone gotten their recipe not off their first jar, it kinda seems everyone that gets it is really lucky off their first jar.

1st Jar as 1st Tol'vir dig popped out the recipt for me yestarday at 465 arch 525 alch think the drop rate is higher then 3% prolly around 20% as along many peps claim it around 1st-2nd try.
Or maybe blizz buff the rate only for xmas XD

Something to take note of if you are an aspiring Alchemist trying to raise archaeology for this recipe.

Don't get discouraged by the increasingly declining drop percentage of this item. Wowhead does and always has collected data from anybody who submits it, as well as all other database-oriented websites. What this means is that the data recorded for the pattern not only includes canopic jar uses for 450+ archaeologists who also have 450+ alchemy, but alchemist/archaeology combinations whose profession levels are too low for discovering this recipe. In addition to that, the data collected also includes jar uses by people who have neither profession and have 0% chance of finding this recipe.

Don't let numbers on this site discourage you from trying for this recipe.

As it stands, I'm one of the few who are having rediculously terrible luck finding this. With all the research I've done, from people who have reported actually finding this pattern, the drop chance is closer to 10-15%.

However, so far for Tol'Vir I have crafted:

Edit #1: I'm now up to 7 soapstone necklaces, 4 cat statues, 2 mosaics. Completed 3 more artifacts with no luck, currently working on yet another cat figurine.

I have 2345 night elf fragments that I can't use because I have all the night elf rares. I also have 1077 fossil fragments that I can't use either.

Still no new jar.

Starting to lose hope.

Edit #2: FINALLY got this out of my 7th jar.

As it stands I've made 30 commons, 7 of which were jars, and 2 Tol'Vir rares. But, before you look at that and say "she was effing lucky" let me put it into perspective.

It generally took me 4-5 hours to get a single dig site in Uldum the last 2 weeks. I've completed a total of 3 artifacts in the last week alone.

I have over 11 days played at level 85, and at least 7 of those were solely spent farming this pattern. So, over 200 hours played time invested in this item.

Was it worth it? Hell yes. If you really want this mount, be persistent.

I currently have 2968 night elf fragments, have farmed over 60 night elf keystones, and have 1490 fossil fragments. Lots of work, lots of time, lots of torture >_o

SO unlike EVERYTHING else where they made it bind on account so as not to needlessly cruel being that this method of getting stuff is just too much to do twice.. For this one item they made an exeption to be mean.

Have leveled Archeology to max on my druid and started farming for the recipe the instant i hit 450.
Got my first Uldum digsite after about 45 mins of clearing fossils and NE sites.
This was about a week ago.

Conclusion:
No recipe yet, but I dont expect anything before 3-5 jars. Scarab pendant as the first rare, the most useless of the rares from Tol'vir, lovely :)
Update (a): Been getting very frequent spawns, even had a triple proc on a Tol'vir site (proccing another site in Uldum). Was fortunate to get 4 hieroglyphs over 3 sites. And currently on the 2nd jar with hopes up. RNG can be your enemy or your friend.
Update (b): I Consider myself pretty fortunate to get 2 jars within 3 solves, lets see if the 3rd wont bear fruit. Fragment/site seems steady atm. Average time between spotted sites has been approximately 15 minutes.

My math said that after 17 jars you have a 50% chance that the recipe is in one of them:

Coin flip has a probability that heads appears in 50% the flips. The probability of not flipping a head in two tosses is .5x.5 or 1/4, in 3 tosses it's .5x.5x.5 or .5^3 which equals 1/8. The probability for heads not showing up in n number of tosses is .5^n

The probability of the recipe not being in the jar is 96% assuming the 4% above is accurate. So the same thing applies to the drop rate .96^n = the probability of it not being in any of those jars. If you want to know what n is for a percentage, then type this into a calculator: (log )/(log .96) this will give you n or the number of jars required to open. Lol sorry if this is a bit technical.

Has anyone been lower than level 85 when they found the recipe? Because some people have found it immediately & others have opened many jars without finding it, it makes me wonder if you need alchemy as a profession AND level 85.

You do not need to have 525 archaeology to find the recipe, only above 450.

I got Canopic Jar on my 1st, 3rd, 6th, and 8th common artifact drop with no recipe yet. Almost like looking at the numbers on a Powerball Ticket and seeing that 4 of your numbers on it matches today's winning numbers, and then realizing that you are looking at last month's Powerball Ticket. =/

I hope your have better luck with the RNG God then I have with the recipe.

EDIT: Got my recipe on my 6th Jar last night. =D But my buddy got in his 2nd jar a few days ago. =/ Oh well. No more farming for the recipe.

Ok so after i leveled my main to level 85, and blizz changed the mount to be boe, i quickly started to level ONLY archaeology on my hunter (level 80). I leveled to 450 on Eastern Kingdom, and a bit on Outland because digging up and down drove me nuts. When i hit 450 i started to dig up Kalimdor (this was on 23th of dec). By the time my hunter became 82.5, remember, ONLY by digging.
Now, my hunter is level 85 (still, only by digging), and no recipe yet. 5 level, 9+5+2+1.6 million xp only by digging (not rested xp, normal), and no recipe.
I got :
3 canopic jar,
2 rare (scarab storm pendant, ring of the boy emperor in progress atm)
2 soapstone necklace
2 cat statue
2 castle of sand
1 tiny mosaic
3 scimitar hilt
3 sketch

When i started this project NOONE on my realm had idea about the mount, about the recipe, and how to get the recipe. I wanted to be the first, i have 100+ hour in this, and i'm very disappointed.

My digging tactic is this:
dig from up to down till i get 4 uldum digsite, then dig those, rinse and repeat. I have almost all night elf rares, plenty of repeats of course, and my bag is full of fossil stuff too :)

Farming for this has made me an angry person.

So far, 30 Tol'Vir commons completed, only 3 of which were jars, obviously none containing the recipe.

4 Rares completed, though this includes the battle tank, which is at least consolation.

However, I do not recommend anyone pick up this terrible profession. The rewards really aren't worth it, (though nothing in this game really feels that way anymore) and you spend so much time digging up worthless ^&*! (hello fossil/troll/470000nightelffragmentsomfgkillmenow still no doll srsly?) you can't get anything else productive accomplished.

Oh and I've wasted about 10,000 gold on Tol'Vir Hieroglyphics. (@800 a piece)

Recipe Drop received with the following facts:

Recipe was inside the first Canopic Jar solved, though other posts suggest that this is not a common drop as they have solved multiple Canopic Jars with no recipe inside.

Archaeology was maxed at 525, however Alchemy was only at 510 at the time of the find.

Total Artifacts solved:
Dwarf: 5
Fossil: 28 (mount and pet found)
Night Elf: 86 (all rares found except trinket)
Tol'vir: 6 (1 rare Pendant of the Scarab Storm found)
Troll: 12

All leveling and otherwise was done completely on Kalimdor. At no time did I travel to any of the other continents or zones.

I was exceedingly lucky in this drop, I squeed both IRL and over chat to various friends for a good 20 minutes or so. Good luck and happy hunting to you all who are also searching for this elusive recipe. Should also be noted that my toon is an 85 priest. No summoning or porting tricks. I did most of this strictly through use of flight points and the occasional hearth. Archaeology maxed 525 on December 25th 2010. Recipe dropped a week and a day later. I don't know how many hours I have put into this project, but a good portion of my wow time since I hit 85 (in the first week of release) has been dedicated to this rather then instancing or leveling one of my other toons. And I'm not done! I have a bunch of rares that I still need to dig up...now however I can be a little more picky with which continents I can go to.

I started bravely with this mission, having alot of time consuming achievements already (Loremaster pre-cata, pets (whelps) and many fishing achievements)
To tell you the truth after 8 common Tol'vir artifacts (1 jar) and 1 rare (scarabs) the fellowship is already breaking apart.
My mind is telling me to farm the 8k gold. That is the amount Alchemists are asking to craft the drake on my realm.
With almost all dwarf, NE and troll rare artifacts in the bag (Zinrokh and Tyrande's doll) this mission is becoming more boring and time consuming than it already is. No I didn't do The Insane and probably never will.
What makes this mission even more difficult is that you're flying around digging for the recipe, your guildies are doing fun stuff (heroics, pvp, getting epic gear).

Ofcourse never forget your goal. The mount will feel better if you craft it yourself, you raise your reputation on the realm and your guildies favor your forever when you craft this baby for free.
When you find this recipe, you will fall asleep with a very big satisfied smile on your face. Happy as a little child on christmas evening.

I only leveled my archaeology for that recepie. It took LOADS of time, but eventually it is rewarding. My advice is dig only in EK whie you reach max levels, because you will hate it if you are all the time on Kalimdor. It is a bit easier for a mage, since we can teleport and set HS in the middle of the continent.

My recepie was in the 3d Canopic Jar, until I got that one I solved almost all the common Tol'vir twice, so it took forever. In meantime I got every single Night elf rare....besides the intellet trinket of course... would be too much :D

But dig dig dig dig and you will get it!

i'm beginning to wonder if there is some sort of bug for some people that causes their odds to get this thing to be way lower or something. Seeing people talk about "finally" getting it after 2 or 3 solves is very upsetting, considering the trouble some of us are having :(

I got a shocking drop of this recipe today. I've had the Canopic Jar common artifact come up before and didn't get squat from it. So, just for fun, once i got the Tol'vir runes to solve for the jar, I flew down into Uldum to the Cradle of the Ancients (~43,72) and solved this Jar there. I almost crapped my pants when this recipe dropped out. I had to reread it twice before the shock wore off.

I have no idea if this really works or if i was just really really lucky... :) A confirmation would be nice... :)

I am an Alchemist and this has dropped from the first Jar I opened. I'm not sure if the other people farming jars are alchemist, but I know the droprate reported by Wowhead will be skewed by two things:
1) people who already have the recipe opening the jars
2) people who are not alchemist opening the jars

You are quite correct Kolenka. I was one of those lucky few that received the recipe out of the first Canopid Jar solved. I have solved a total of 6 Tol'Vir artifacts. 4 commons, number 5 was the Scarab Pendant, number 6 was the Canopic Jar which contained my recipe.

The canopic jar itself is not considered a rare artifact. The recipe while it is an epic item does not count in the archeology achievements for rare finds, confirmed when I opened the jar and learned it with 9/10 rares already found for the "I Had It in My Hand" achievement and the Assistant Professor Title. The achievement did not complete. I would think it is on a different scale then the rest of the rare items and I don't see how solving rares in Tol'Vir would affect the frequency rate of the drop except for furthering along the cycle of items queueing up to get to the next Canopic Jar.

It appears to be completely random. Some get it off the first jar they open, some of the third or fourth, some are on their 15th jar and still have not seen the recipe, assuming those opening 15+ jars are also alchemists and have a chance to see the recipe. I've corrected multiple people complaining about not finding the recipe on my server who were all fired up about leveling archeology in hopes to get this recipe drop so they could exploit alchemists and sell it for thousands of gold on the AH. I burst their bubbles informing them a) recipe was BOP and b) smart loot.

While it requires max alchemy to learn, you do *not* have to have max alchemy to see the drop as My Alchemy was 510 at the time of the find. Unknown if someone who has just trained but not leveled the alchemy is still able to see the drop or not.

I posted this above but I think people may have marked as negative and 'unhelpful' out of spite *because* I got it in my first drop. Apologies to all of you who may have seen it as me trolling because of my luck. I am by no means trying to cheapen anyone's hard work trying to locate this recipe but the good luck drops are just as meaningful as the ones that take forever in figuring out the statistics and drop rates. If it makes you all feel any better, I still haven't seen the darn Nelf Trinket. :P

Here's my pain...

2 days, 20 hours played since I hit 425. At that point I used all the dwarf artifacts that I saved; I saved them all, hoping for the staff. That would have made this a little less painful...

I have all the NE rares.
I have solved 30 Tol'Vir artifacts, 2 of which were the Pendant and Ring. 5 of which were jars... each of course contained remains.

My alchemy was at 525 before picking up Archaelogy and of course, I was at 525 in Arch after discovering all the dwarf artifacts.

So the two items I'm after, the recipie and staff have not been seen yet...

Sigh... I'll up date late... I have some holes to dig.

Anyone else saving the fossil and N Elf in case they add more items later? :)

Also, I have 3366 N Elf pieces and 1418 Fossil saved...

I just completed the current artifact I was on when I orginally posted and the next was a jar... keep your fingers crossed for me :)

Well.... jar # 6 and another mummified organ.... but the next artifact... another jar. 2 in a row. Now they are starting to tease me...

Up to 44 Tol'Vir artifacts, no more jars in the last 8 hours or so and my new artifact is The Scepter of Azj'Aquir.... Just what I wanted... NOT. Now 150 more pieces until the next... sigh.

After getting The Scepter artifact, I spent 6 hours without one Tol'Vir dig site.... After finally completing it the next item was the cat's eye...

After that, I received my 9th Jar... 3 days, 8 hours played of nothing but digging and finally... I received the recipe! No god damn more digging! Well, until I get a hair up my *** and want to work on the dwarven staff.

I was about to give up, but with the time invested so far, that wasn't an option.

The nicest thing about it... is now I can actually start playing the game and enjoying it :)

For the others out there... good luck! It's a long, boring road... unless you get lucky like some. But it's out there... What's a little tunnel carpel syndrom for a nice mount? :)

Also, this was completed on a mage... and I have 5642 N Elf pieces and 2334 fossil saved up after getting all their associated rares... just to give you an idea of how many sites I had to touch...

I had 4 Canopic Jars sitting in my bank that I finished before ever learning alchemy, today I decided to drop mining and train alchemy-- When my skill was 516 I remembered I had them in my bank and decided to open them and on the 2nd jar I got the recipe... So if you don't have alchemy but you have the jars hold on to them just in case you decide to take up alchemy someday.

By the way anyone brought this up on Blizzard forum? I mean if this recipe/mount is like Chopper was in Wotlk, this should not be soooo grindy. A bit grindy is ok, but many of us has 100+ hours in this project, where the mount was bop by default, and only the vendor parts are 30k (plus 24 flask + 12 truegold)

Note: This is in reply to a deleted post, but I'm leaving it since it does respond to a common counterargument. Essentially, this is a reply to the belief that "anyone who farmed the recipe did it to get the mount for themselves, so the horrible grind was so THEY could have a mount. Any mounts they make after that is free and no effort, it's greedy and inconsiderate to charge money to make it, and if you do want money then a small tip should be enough!"

I can see your point, but you're still making a lot of assumptions.

Personally, I've been farming (at 2-5 hours/day, every day, for two weeks) the mount not for myself, but because I'd like to be able to sell it and make a profit. Between the keystones I've found and used instead of selling, and the keystones I've bought just to use, I've probably sunk about 20k gold into the grind so far. I also picked up and maxed alchemy just for this, which was another 10k gold.

When you also consider the amount of money I could've made if I hadn't been farming for the recipe, but instead grinding other things, doing dailies, and playing the AH then I'm down much more than a mere 20-30k. This is my only character on this realm, and I don't have any casters -- In this entire grind, I've yet to find a single rare piece of equipment I can actually use. If I had spent all this time doing heroics, I'd be fully geared and ready for raiding by now. Instead, I'm still wearing a lot of the quest greens I first dinged 85 with.

You also need to remember that this mount isn't something necessary for normal play, it is purely a status symbol -- the entire point of a status symbol is that they're hard to get. In this it's hard to get because it costs a lot of money.

After all this, I'm still no closer today to finding the recipe than I was two weeks ago. Random drops are random, and I've spoke to several people who got the recipe in their first jar since I began this ordeal. You say it's greedy to want a big tip for this, but you really need to consider the time invested against that. You said that being considerate to your fellow wow player is more important than greed: but which fellow player are you considering?
After investing virtually all of my free time for two weeks on this grind just in order to make money, someone certainly isn't being considerate to me by selling the mount so cheap that, at the end of the grind, the entire thing has been nothing but a fantastic waste of time and gold. They're not being very considerate to the people who grinded the mount themselves, either -- suddenly their unique status symbol has been reduced to something much more common, much easier to get.

True, 3k gold is a tidy profit on making the mount. But you also need to consider that a lot of the people who wanted the mount already have it, and there aren't infinite customers in line to buy from you. I doubt someone who finds the recipe today will be able to sell very many mounts, to be honest. At 3k gold each, it could take many months before a newcomer has made enough money in tips to even recoup the cost (both in burned keystones and wasted time) of getting the recipe in the first place. It's not greedy to want to break even faster than that, it's human. The person you bought the mount from probably either got very lucky and didn't have to grind for their recipe, or they got it so long ago they made hundreds of thousands of gold selling it early on and are now trying to undercut newcomers to drive them away.

I can say the myth about "You will not get any repeats unless you complete every common artifact for that skill level for any given race." Is not true. As others have stated I have gotten repeats before I've solved every single grey in a given tier.

I think that it isnt myth. All think about just races but there are also level tiers for some races. In case of tol'vir or nerubian or orc it doesnt matter because they are 300-375, 375-450 or 450-525 but NE or Troll (fossil and dwarf too ofc) have less commons 1-300 level and once you reach 450+ (maybe also for other levels not just 450) you open new commons. You may see these common having requirement of more fragments and having 2 slots for keystone, lower level common needed like just 30 fragments and had no keystone or just one slot for it. Thats probably why you get repeats and still dont had all commons solved. Same apply for rares i dont think you can get NE rare trinket below 450 as you cant get those higher commons.

Until will someone confirm of getting repeat on tol'vir common (which is top tier currently) before getting all 7 commons i ll take this as truth. Repeats on NE arent real proof because of those level tiers.

In my case i had exactly 7 commons tol vir in row. One of each ofc no luck for recipe :( and now, solved another 20 commons including 2 tol vir rare and still no canopic jar repeat.

I was trying to get the doll and was just digging in Uldum when I was close. Jar was my 7th artifact (one of those 6 was Pendant of the Scarab Storm, other were common). I've found that recipe in that first jar. Game could be a bit less random though, seeing so many people trying to get it for days.

Has anyone else had this problem: I've been farming for the canopic jar for weeks for hours at a time and I have only been able to solve the jar once.
I am 525 Alchemy and 525 Archaeology for at least 2 weeks now, I have Pendant of the Scarab Storm and Ring of the Boy Emperor. These are my current stats:

Maxed Alch 525, Arch 525, have Ring of the Boy Emperor, Scarab Necklace... Just opened my 5th Canopic Jar to find nothing in it....

The worst part is after seeing the Jar was the common item, it took literally 4 straight hours of digging to get a single Uldum site to pop.... Finally some did and I completed it to find nothing yet again....

This grind is the worst I have done in my gaming history... It takes a special person to keep at this with anything over 5 jars completed with no success... The RGN system has no garauntees no matter how much time you put into it... That is the SCARY part... I have to be honest in that I am struggling to continue with the same focus... When I see people looted this in one or two jars I realize it could possibly be 20+ jars with no success with this system in place...!

Fix:
My suggestion would be that once you complete all rares within a certain race... You gain something like Archaeology Focus which would allow you to lock-out that racial digsite... So in the example of Kalimdor, if you completed all the Fosil Rares, you could then lock out the fossil sites and your chances for Uldum increase slightly... Once you grind enough and are able to knock out the Nightelf Rares, Uldum becomes open to complete and your odds are significantly greater... This way you have a sense of accomplishment and not feel like each piece you grab is a complete waste of time... It would still take awhile even with this system but it would reward hard work on not rely completely on a RGN system... My two cents

Edit** Just got the recipe after the 6th Jar... I am one happy player that I can not express in words... Maybe it is because all that grinding is over..! lol

After mindlessly grinding for a few weeks now, this recipe is getting on my nerves. I was originally lured into the grind by my three friends who had all gotten the recipe on their very first Canopic Jar, very early on in the expansion, but boy didn't I know what I was in for. Fast-forward up to now, and I've completed a total of 1314 archaeology projects, whereas nearly 700 of them are Night Elf only. 175 of the projects are of Tol'vir nature, consisting of the two standard rares (Scarab thing and the ring) and these commons:

You need 450 Archeology to obtain the recipe, and it is extremely RNG. I have heard it was obtained with an alchemy skill as low as 225, though it requires 525 to make.

So assuming you get 1 Tol'Vir digsite every 30 min and about a 1.5%* chance of getting this for every 3-4 digsites.
We are talking about an average 1200** hours of archeology. This does seem a bit high, so I am hoping the rates I have are wrong. Please post if you have better data on the rates.

While your calculation of the probability is quite an interesting one, I am asking myself another question:

Is it better to mine every dig-site giving Tol'vir artifacts once it pops up, or is it just as good to mine all others and going to Uldum and mine all dig-sites there? I would guess that yes, you I should go there every time it pops up to highten the chance of another dig-site in Uldum.

Any thoughts?

I will update this as i go... i really truly already am starting to loathe archaeology and the canopic jar. It wouldn't be so bad but sometimes i'll grind for 5 hours straight and see two tol'vir sites.

Hate really doesn't encompass how i feel about this grind. Apparently blizzard is trying to out-do korean MMOs in terms of grind with this skill and are winning by a huge margin.

This sucks beyond belief, it's taking me an average of 15-20 other dig sites just to get one to show up in Uldum, I've only been doing it for about a week now, and to make things more painful the first tol'var item I had to make was a rare, so 150 fragments right there, and now I'm on a second rare, so another 150 before I can even move onto my next item, oy...

There are 63 digsites available in Kalimdor. 9 are Tol'vir. Once you clear a digsite, the next can't be the same you just cleared.
Uldum digsites available----Chance for the next digsite pop at Uldum:

Never let them build up. Go to Uldum as soon as they pop there (Deepholm -> Capital City -> Uldum). The time you save most certainly pays for the Potions of Deepholm.

7th dud Canopic Jar!

Getting frustrated -- this recipe was really the only artifact I wanted from day 1 but instead (not that I'm complaining) I've gotten the mount, the staff, the ring, the scarabs... and a migraine.

EDIT: 13 days of digging later, STILL on my 7th stinking jar! Ugh! I haven't dropped the F-bomb this much on any other part of the game -- not even on my 203rd (finally) successful attempt at the Baron's mount; my neighbors must think I have Tourette syndrome!

Here are the current stats on my Tol'vir artifacts thus far:

Also, I only have 4 other rare archaeology artifacts available.

Adding insult to injury, one day I spent an entire 20 hour straight grind digging with only bio and food breaks and not a single solitary Uldum site opened! I even moved to a PvE server in hopes of making digging go faster.

Here is my current stand on this topic: I pride myself in having all of the other alchemy recipes available in the game (and previous good luck at aquiring them) however, if I gather the mats before I have the recipe (only 3 Sands of Time left to purchase) I'm paying someone to make it and throwing away this stupid pick! I would much rather spend my time farming rare mounts or pets rather than taking the chance I'll get something that I take the chance I'll get something else inside of!

I'm annoyed, I'm tired, and there are buckets of sand in my underwear!

12 jars, no recipe. I salute those who go beyond 20 and still continue. I've completed roughly 50 Tol'vir artifacts, so I'm not complaining about the number of jars that have been made available to me. I do wish, though, that they would reduce the number of fragments needed from 45 to about 35 and only letting us use 1 keystone instead of 2. I rarely even get one, so that wouldn't really matter. Anyway, if you want this recipe, you must be prepared for a long, long grind. The worst one I have done by far. Or... you get really lucky in find it in your first 3 jars. And btw... complaining after you've opened under 5 jars is just sad. Either you go all the way, or you give up... your choice.

So it seems like the question no one has asked is, what happens if you get the jar and are NOT an alchemist? My 525 archaeologist is still searching for this jar, but I'm wondering if I will just never get the recipe because I'm not an alchemist, or will I still have a chance to get it and be able to sell/bank it if I choose?

What's up with the recorded drop rate? It was listed at 5% forever, now it's 38%.

EDIT: Just saw that the recorded drop rate for Mummified Organs is 1000%. I'm guessing Wowhead added an extra zero to the drop counts for some reason, which means the drop rate should be listed at 3.8%. And yes, I realize that's taking into account the non-alchemists who opened it.

I have had better results by digging Tol'vir sites as soon as the pop up.

heres some theory to support.
we have 9 digsites in Uldum and 63 digsites in kalimdor.

If you dig Tol'vir digsites as soon as they pop-up - then probability that the next digsite will pop up in Uldum is 9/63

If you have 1 digsite already present in Uldum - then probability that the next digsite will pop up in Uldum is 8/63
If you have 2 digsite already present in Uldum - then probability that the next digsite will pop up in Uldum is 7/63
If you have 3 digsite already present in Uldum - then probability that the next digsite will pop up in Uldum is 6/63
0% chance to buil-up more than 3 sites in the same area

This is actual an incorrect statement. I have on at least 2 occurences I have cleared a site with the next site being the one I had just cleared (one such time was today, saddly a fossile site). No I did not miscount the number of artifacts I dug up.

Sometimes you can get lucky. I uncovered all of the Tol'vir commons and the mount before my first canopic jar was discovered. I then uncovered two commons before my next canopic jar. Right after I solved my second canopic jar, a third canopic jar was uncovered. That was the one with the recipe. So, three canopic jars for me.

Been digging non-stop for 3 days now. Four jars deep and no joy. I'm not really surprised though.

I've completed all Night Elf and Fossil rares and completed the Zin'Rokh on another character on this server, which raises the question can I complete multiple Unique-Equipped rares on the same server?

Anyways, I think I've noticed an increase in the spawn rate of Tol'Vir digsites.

Also, my philosophy has been a little different on the Tol'Vir digsites. I like getting all four down there, then going to town. Usually it trains off into another 2-3 digs which just feels like I accomplish more instead of teleporting down every time I get one.

Over 22k in fragments, total (and still going).

The the person(s) who said that getting 4 Uldum dig sites at one time was impossible:
I've had it happen to me twice so far. And that was before 4.0.6 went live. Granted. This was over a month of

With the vial of the sands, many 'ride me' and 'I'm truly an epic mount' jokes have begun.
My only thing is, if the rider wants 'variable speeds', they'll have to supply their own haste potions. =P

The chance to get a canopic jar (and the drake recipe) is much better since patch 4.0.6 because 7 new Tol'vir sites have been added to the Kalimdor pool. The new chance for Tol'vir sites to pop up is 23,19% (if you strictly dig in Kalimdor).

Redundant thought but they must've increased the drop rate on this item. Tonight I started my first Tol'vir project ever, and it was a jar, finished the jar within 45 minutes (even getting 2 back to back digsites in Uldum), opened it and inside was the pattern. I know I might be extremely lucky but I never have this kind of luck with anything so I'm skeptical.

Got the recipe on my 15th Canopic jar. I've completed 73 artifacts, including the "common" 2 rares. I had actually given up on getting this recipe, but after the patch (which included 7 more Uldum digsites) I decided to give it another shot. I asked a GM if having an Uldum digsite made the chances of getting another one less likely, but he confirmed that every digsite was randomly chosen from those who are available. Of course, getting 1 and then ignoring it to get more makes the chances of another on less likely as there a fewer Uldum digsites to pick from. Prior to the patch I would have recommended those looking for this recipe to go to the Uldum digsite as soon as it appeared, but now I would say that allowing 2 or 3 digsites is much better. Having more than one made it easier for me to keep digging, as I could solve 1 and then see what the next one was. Still, this recipe is hard to get. You might get lucky and find one in your first 3 jars, but some may have to open 15-30 jars (or more) to get it.

Buying it from someone else is much less time consuming, and the time you will spend on getting it is time you could have spent on farming the gold to buy it (and much more). If you're like me and won't stop until you acutally get it yourself, you may have to dig until you start to go insane. The new digsites has made it much easier, but for all you unlucky bastard out there... this may be a long, long grind.

As you can see on the screenshot I solved the 3 of them and on my way to the 4th (Not doing it until I have 2 Hieroglyphs):

And I'm not even an alchemist, I am so so so sorry for those of you out there farming for it day in and day out. I'm just hunting for the damned Scepter of Azj'Aqir :(

From now on I will be putting these in bank (without peeking into them first). Maybe they become non BoP or the Recipe: Vial of the Sands is turned into BoA or without any bind and also drops for non-alchemists at some patch in the future. Just wonder if the drop inside them is decided once they are solved/created or when the container is opened. In any case the items might just be invisible for non-alchemists with an option of turning them visible in the database somehow in a patch.

Anyway, got nothing to loose by saving them for a few patches other than a bit of bank-space.

EDIT: I'm MAJOR bugged, I've gotten Canopic Jar 6 (SIX) times in a ROW now .............
The mathematic chance for this should be 1 in ~ 117.646 (There is 7 Tol'vir commons, so 7x7x7x7x7x7, this is without calculating in the chance of getting the rare ones, also Canopic Jar might have even lower chance of beeing your solve, making the chance of this happening even less) and I've made a ticket to find out of something fishy is going on after this mornings hotfix. I have Tol'vir fragments to do 2 more solves. But really don't feel like testing if I'm still stuck at the Jar since im actually farming for the scepter. But if I get one more after this one it would bring it up to close to one in a million chance.

If some of you are hunting Recipe: Vial of the Sands you might wanna press on today and see if you can get a Canopic Jar and get "stuck" on it just like me !

While trying to get the bug mount from Tol'Vir solves, I decided to save up about 15 Canopic Jars in my bank.

Picked up alchemy from a trainer and leveled from 1-500 one day, and opened the Jars I had in my bank. The recipe dropped from the first.

So just dropping by to say that you SHOULD save your Canopic Jars even if you're not an alchemist. You might want to change professions some day.

Now if only I could have as much luck with the mount as I had with the recipe...

The mount is selling for around 40,000g in AH. Comparing it with the low rate of dig site appearance, your chance of getting the Canopic Jar, and even lower rate of getting this recipe, plus the horrible cost of crafting the mount. That makes a simple one click buyout of the mount justified to me.

It appears that rate for making Canopic jars has recently been lowered, while drop rate for the recipe from the jar is now close to 100%. At least me and my guildie got the recipe on first jar, but I managed to get 3 tol'vir rares (2 useless + ring) and all NE rares (including doll) before it appeared.

Finally! I got it tonight on my 25th jar.

I wish i could say it´s been a pleasant adventure but it really took my nerves after farming for such a long time.
Uldum digsites are still very rare even after having the chance to respawn increased in the last patch. The days i spent more time farming i got 1, sometimes 2 Tol'vir Hieroglyphic, but most of days i got none.

I crafted 163 Tol´vir fragments in total and here there is the distribution:

- 1 Ring of the Boy Emperor that i got after 12 artifacts.
- 1 Pendant of the Scarab Storm that i got after 43 artifacts.
- 20 Tiny Oasis Mosaic.
- 25 Canopic Jar
- 23 Castle of Sand
- 17 Sketch of a Desert Palace
- 22 Cat Statue with Emerald Eyes
- 23 Soapstone Scarab Necklace
- 31 Engraved Scimitar Hilt

This means i crafted more than 100 artifacts without getting anything new, which was tiring, and in just the last 4 days i got half of the canopic jars i completed. I had to dig in Kalimdor over and over again to make an Uldum digsite respawn. Mostly i completed Night Elf artifacts which are the more common digsites of Kalimdor. In total i completed 436 Night elf and got all the possible items from this race.

Anyway, when i got the recipe tonight i admit it made me happy but im not sure if its worth the time. I leveled from 80 to 84 by doing only archaeology and digging something practically everyday since the launch. A guildie got it after 14 canopic jars and another friend after only 2.

If you want to go for it, be patient, and who knows ^^

I set my hearth to Ashenvale (15 mins with guild perk) and used Potion of Deepholm to get back to SW, and then go direct to Uldum.

My strategy was to go back to Uldum everytime I saw a site appear. Several times the next one appeared there too. I would then just move onto next closest site and check each time. If it was in the North, I would hearth to Ashenvale then potion my way back if one appeared in Uldum again.

I was lucky and got 4 in a row in Uldum one time.

I averaged about a jar per day over 4 days (4-6 hrs per day) and recipe was in 5th jar.

Patience required. Happy digging.

I finally got this recipe. I spent about two months doing nothing but archaeology, playing approximately two hours per day (this time includes leveling archaeology from 0). I found it in my ninth canopic jar. I had completed almost exactly 600 archaeology projects by that point. I'm now only missing the four epic weapons (plus the six new rares added for 4.1).

Well, the 4.1.0 patch seems to have helped some. Now you are less likely to get a dig site of a race if you have all or most of their artifacts - and since I have pretty much vacuumed Kalimdor for the last 5 months, it means I've got about 99% of what's gettable - except the recipe from Uldum - and now I'm getting Uldum more frequently.

Of course random being random, that may not turn out to be any help in the long run.

Thortok's guide to getting a Vial of the Sands!

Sandstone Drake. Two passenger flying mount. You actually transform into a dragon that has nobody sitting on your back, and can fly around that way or offer someone in your group a ride on your back. Don't have to be an Alchemist to become a dragon. Do have to be an Alchemist (and an Archaeologist) to make a vial. Don't have to own one to ride on someone else. Gives an achievement to have it: Vial of the Sands.

(Alchemists Only) Get to (at least) 450 Archaeology, and 525 Alchemy.
(Alchemists Only) Continue to do Archaelogy on the Kalimdor continent, specifically Tol'vir digsites if possible, until you get Canopic Jar. Good luck!
(Alchemists Only) Open your Canopic Jar and hope it contains a Recipe: Vial of the Sands, and if so, then learn it. Good luck! Repeat Steps 2 and 3 as necessary. While it is possible for the recipe to appear even if you are not yet at 525 Alchemy, it will only appear to Alchemists of a certain level of skill; so I recommend staying on the safe side and getting to 525 Alchemy first. You'll need it anyway to actually learn the recipe!
Gather 12x Truegold, 8x Flask of the Winds, 8x Flask of Titanic Strength, and 8x Deepstone Oil. Hopefully you can figure out how to do this on your own.
Save up 29000 gold or the following items: Pyrium-Laced Crystalline Vial will cost 5000 gold. 8x Sands of Time will cost 3000 gold each for a total of 24000 gold. These mats can only be bought from in the far northwest of Uldum. Finding any of these mats for cheaper than the listed price on the Auction House is unlikely, but possible*, so make sure you check because it could save you money. Obviously, don't buy them for more than the listed price. Duh.
The mats from Steps 4 and 5 will be used to make the vial. If you are not an Alchemist, you will need to find one that has completed Step 3 and you'll have to give them the mats to make it.**

*The mats in Step 5 are bought from a vendor so the guild perk Bartering can be used for a discount. No other forms of discounts are currently known. If you do not have this perk, you can check the Auction House to see if someone who does is selling at a discount. Since it could potentially save you money, why not check?

**Make sure you protect yourself! If you get scammed, GM's can and will take action to get your gold and/or mats back, just open a ticket. In order for them to confirm it was a scam, make sure the entire transaction is negotiated using in-game text chat so the GM can read the chat log and confirm that you have been scammed. (Hopefully this won't happen anyway, but 29k+ in mats is a respectable chunk of money, so make sure to cover your bases.) This 'scam protection' is provided for all forms of scams, including the 'give you the mats to make an item and you keep them and give me nothing' scam, as scamming is against the ToS!

I recommend, for Alchemists making this for yourself, after you make your first one, check your realm to see if there's anyone willing to buy this for extremely high prices (like, 60k or higher, perhaps even 80k). If you get enough profit, make another one and attempt to sell it. Keep going until you don't get any buyers for awhile, making and selling one by one, and then if you go a long time and can't sell your current one for a profit, THEN learn it yourself.

First of all, please note that you HAVE to have alchemy to have this drop from a canopic jar which is from farming tol'vir dig sites. So you need max archeology and have to have alchemy of any skill from what i've seen. The jar drops at least once for every 10 artifects from expiriance and it takes 3 + jar drops to get the recipe. I have never gone passed 15 jars without it dropping. The mats for the actual potion are very expensive and if you can con someone to buy it for 10k lmao you're either very smart or the dude is very stupid.

The latter should allow for a better chance on this recipe in the future if you focus on the tol'vir.

Finally found it, I also have Tyrande's Favorite doll to show for all the silly Night Elf fragments and have almost completed archaeology as I took a detour through Northrend and Outland to complete the rares for Orc, Draenei, Nerubian and Vrykul. I have various painting and writing projects so I do these while flying in windowed mode, it makes it easier.

If you've gotten this far in the comments and are still reading, here are some interesting thoughts:

According to this thread, the recipe has approximately a 10% drop chance.

By the multiplicative property of probability, each time you open a jar you can consider the probability of not receiving the recipe as 0.9^n, where n is the number of jars you've opened and starts incrementing at 1.

Thus the probability of not getting the recipe from 1 jar is 0.9^1 = 90%
The probability of not getting the recipe from 2 jars is 0.9^2 = 81%
etc.

Using this property, assuming that getting the jar is a totally random event (one trial does not effect the other), and across hundreds of thousands of people trying for it:
0.9^7 = 47%, so we would expect about 50% of people to receive the recipe in 7 jars or less.
0.9^13 = 25%, 75% of people in 13 jars or less.
0.9^22 = 9.8%, 90% in 22 jars or less.
0.9^29 = 4.7%, 95% in 29 jars or less.

And if you get to 43 jars you'll be pushed into the 1st percentile. If you have enough tenacity to get this far and still be going after the recipe I recommend you immediately stop trying and never go to Vegas.

Thought this was a neat little way to create some milestones. I'm thinking that if I get to 29 I'll stop. Having been schooled in science the 5th percentile is all the stubbornness I think I can muster. Now if statistics would just stop abusing me by forcing me to go three days at a time without a single jar showing up as my next project, I'll be a much happier person.

Finally got this from my 21st jar with 144 tol'vir artifacts solved. This took about four months although I stopped few weeks before 4.1 and waited for the promised digsite spawn change. I also leveled alts during this project so I didn't dig 24/7 or anything...

If someone asked for advice I'd tell them not to start digging. The mount is not worth it. Find someone else with the recipe and have them craft it for you before you become so obsessed that you can't stop.

But if you consider yourself lucky and try to go after the recipe I'd suggest that you watch some tv series or listen podcasts while digging to distract you from the boredom.

I quit the game because of the frustration I went through trying to get this damn vial when Cataclysm first came out. I spend weeks leveling my Alchemist to the max archaeology, only to go through about 15 jars and not get the damn recipe. I guess I just got turned off because I spent ALL my time focusing on getting the recipe and not doing other things in game. That was last year, and now I am going to play again. This time I will space out my hunting for the recipe with other in game things I enjoy until I get it. Hopefully it will be worth it!

Reading all of the messages makes me feel kind of bad for wanting to share this but I got the Recipe: Vial of the Sands after opening my second Canopic Jar... Obviously I was ecstatic, only to bump against the next obstacle: the costs to make the damn vial. All in all it costs me roughly 36K gold to make! I'm planning on making one, selling it for 50K, and then make one for myself using the money I made. That way I'm not completely poor once I obtain this beast. Fortunately these mounts are in very, very limited supply on my server. Have been checking the AH and so far there hasn't been one in the AH for the past week.

For anyone collating stats.... found one in my 7th Canopic Jar...and next Tol'Vir artefact is another jar!

To get to this stage I have solved 43 Tol'vir artefacts and suffered through solving 136 Night Elf as a by-product. I am still trying to get the Crawling Claw but the last day and a half grinding has returned zero rares from Kalimdor (I have 8 purple and 1 blue left to solve in total, including 1 Night Elf and 2 Tol'vir)

I Finally got this today after what seemed an endless lost cause. I had previously only got 1 Canope Jar and since then had nothing but other Common Artifacts id almost given up until only my 2nd Canope Jar appeared and there it was inside:)

And guess what popped up after getting the drop? Yeah only my 3rd Canope Jar lol

Was weird i kept getting keystones while digging in uldar and i thought this was strange and though "it might be inside this one" lol.

I got over 50 of those canopic jars when I was farming the bug mount on my main some months back. Yes, 50+. What sucks is my main is a mount/pet collector. I don't have alchemy on them, but an alt does. So, now I have to try and get the plans. I'm up to a very meager 4 jars so far. Oh how I WISH I had my 50+ jars from before.

They should have made the plans available to anyone, but make it bind on account, so you could send it to any of your characters that have alchemy. I don't see a problem with that. I suppose it would make it less rare, but still it would be only for you right? And there still wouldn't be many in the AH, because it's too expensive to make and not very profitable.

I did the grind from 80-85 (on my mage/alchemist) almost entirely on archaeology in hopes of getting this recipe. Had to go through a number of uldum artifacts, including two rares before even getting a canopic jar, but I got the recipe from the first one I opened. :)

Already had enough money saved so I was able to make the mount today. Just had to farm some more volatile lives to make the flasks required. The whole reason I leveled archaeology was because a friend said they wanted this mount, so of course I gave them the mount after I made it. :)

I cant seem to get a definite answer from here on wowhead or in-game...I got two different answers from two different GM's....one even said "well its supposed to be a mysterious item, and figuring it out is part of the fun!" ...almost sent me into an all caps rage haha

I just got this one.

I get the canoptic jar in archaeology when i had LW/skinning.
But changed my professions when i saw my archaeology reward, to alchemy and JC.
And i got the recepie on my first canoptic jar.
So if loot is decided on the jar when it shows up in archaeology, it can contain the recepie even if you don't have alchemy. You probably just woun't be able to see it. Unless you change a profession to alchemy.

Breaking News: I was testing Archaeology in 4.3 PTR (Build 14995) on a non-alchemist and came across a canopic jar with this recipe. Confirmed after 9 canopic jars, and many many tol'vir solves.

The recipe can drop for a non-alchemist, but is not learnable unless you have the appropriate Alchemy level. You'll have to drop a profession to learn alchemy and level it before you can use the recipe.

Remember, this happened on the 4.3 PTR (Build 14995). I have no idea if the recipe will drop currently on live realms, or in 4.3 live for no n-alchemists.

Not sure if this has been posted before or not...admittedly I have not read all 250+ comments here.

You can get this Recipe more than once.

I got it on my 21st Jar earlier in the year. Made my Vial mount. Not long after, I dropped Alchemy to take up Engineering (just far enough to get the two mounts), then dropped it and went back to Alchemy. Naturally this caused me to lose the Vial recipe from my spellbook.

Was out chasing the hand pet today and got another Jar. I had gotten a few since my profession swap and hadn't gotten another Recipe, so I didn't think anything of it.
Today's Jar, however, did contain the Recipe, and I was able to learn it again.

Just thought I would toss this bit of info out there in case anyone was wondering.

I have been farming this recipe for 5 months now. I have digged up about 40 canopic jars. I have still not received the recipe. I even open up a ticket because I should have at least got it by now. The GM told me that is random and to keep trying.

Just looted this recipe last night (Jan/12.) Thought I'd offer what I learned. 310% flying was well worth it. It took me about 14 hours to go from arch 1 to 450, about 2 hours to max out. Solved 203 items, got the recipe in 4th canopic jar. Goblin discount definitely gone for Yasmin's mats. Took almost 40 hours from 450 when I started getting tol'vir items to getting the recipe. Some said that it was good to go immediately to Uldum sites, while others liked to clear out the rest, to me, once I was done leveling the skill, the only ones I did were those close to Uldum and only hearthed northward when none were popping up. Those I left, in my mind, blocked them and made Tol'vir more likely. It is possible to get the tol'vir heiroglyphs and pass them from one character to another. They are not soul bound. They do sell on my server but not for anything I'd spend. I have one left, tempted to try. More than 3/4 of my items were Nelf, but I did see fewer of their sites once I had 16 commons and 8 rares. Don't know how many exactly there are. But the resultant void was filled with both Tol'vir and fossil, since all fossil Items I wanted were already solved, that was still kind of annoying. I almost didn't even try this, considering the negative comments, and while it was a grind, and felt like doing handsprings once I got the recipe and didn't have to use that pick axe any more, I think, if you want this mount, don't let what others say discourage you.

It is true in order to get this recipe you must have 450 archaeology in order to get the digsite in Uldum. Thankfully for me I got the recipe on my first canopic jar which was my 2nd artifact in Uldum with an archaeology level of 510. I did archaeology off and on for 3 weeks to get my archaeology up til I got the jar and recipe. I will tell you farming and getting the mats is worse than leveling your archaeology, if you plan to make everything yourself. If exaulted in Uldum you can get the sands of time for 2.7k each from Yasmin and the Pyrium vial for 4.5k from Yasmin. Good luck fellow alchemists, it sure is a journey for this mount.

Just got this of a Canopic Jar(My 4th one). So I'd like to share some information I gathered during this quest to acquire the recipe. I contacted a GM about it to know if I had to have 525 alchemy or what not.

Greetings Drottendauwg,

first of all, apologies for the long wait - the last patch is still keeping us fairly busy.

You do need to have Alchemy in order to get the recipe to drop at all. The question of minium level, however, is something we do not disclose as the community hast to figure precise drop mechanics our for itself. Generally it is true though that one does not need a maxed Alchemy skill in order to obtain the recipe (but there is a minimum).

In the end you need 525 skill to use the recipe anyways so bringing Alchemy up before opening the Canopic Jars can't hurt. ;)

Should you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

So he confirmed that you need Alchemy in order for it to drop. And that there is a minimum level of Alchemy needed.

Anyways I skilled 525 alchemy before I started. And one thing I noticed when at 525 archaelogy and after a long time after getting Night Elf artifacts and what not is that Tol'vir where spawning much more frequently and Night Elf much less and this I'm sure of.

Hope this helps out in some way those who want the recipe.

Level 82 druid, 480->485 Archaelogy skill when she made the Canopic Jar and opened it. Obviously there's no minimum level to get it other than being able to get Tol'Vir dig sites.

After much hair-pulling, whining, computer kicking, (and a temper tantrum or two), I finally got the recipe and squealed so loudly, my husband's ears are still ringing (according to HIM, anyways). It was a lot of work, and pretty time consuming with the flying everywhere. (I watched tv& movies on my iPad). Fortunately, I was home sick for awhile and had some time on my hands.
I found the recipe in my 5th canopic jar. The other Tol'vir artifacts completed include:

For those who are creating characters specifically to get this recipe-- god bless you-- I have a few pointers. Note that I still haven't gotten it on my Alchemist, so take this with the usual grain of Internet salt.

First, obviously, you need 525 Archaeology. The Uldum digsites won't even show until then. Second, you have to have Alchemy; the recipe won't show unless you have it. Some people say that you don't need max skill in that profession, but why take chances? Besides, those Potions of Treasure Finding help make grinding Volatiles more rewarding.

A Dwarf may be your best bet. Although I haven't noticed any real statistical superiority (wait till I have 300 keystones on each of my Archaeologists), they're said to find things like Tol'vir Heiroglyphics more frequently. I like Druids for exploring digsites, because their Swift Flight Form is instantaneous and can be cast while moving; getting from place to place inside a digsite is more tedious if you have to spring a Gryphon or run every time. Alas, Dwarves can't be Druids at the moment. Mage would be the next best bet, because of their teleportation ability-- it cuts down greatly on travel time.

Four sites will spwan on each continent; when you exhaust one, another will spring up. Therefore you can pimp the Uldum sites by diggin in the rest of Kalimdor. Some people have asked whether it's best to jump on the Uldum sites when they pop up, or wait till you have two or three; I'd say the former. Sites will not spawn on top of ones that already exist-- there will always be four unique locations, barring errors-- so having three non-Uldum digsites filled means three non-Uldum sites that won't be selected for the replacement. It's a very small percentage benefit, but every point counts.

Unless my maths is flawed (Being an accountant in training I like to think it isn't) the chance of getting this is 69/120000

The chance of getting a Tol'vir digsite is roughly 23% if my source is to be trusted. 23%=23/100
There are 12 Tol'vir artifacts in total, meaning the chance of a canopic jar is 1/12

This just proced for me on my 11th canopic jar. It was my 65th Tol'vir solve. I bought the drake last year.

Weeks ago the mount, ultramarine qiraji battle tank proced for me. I had the pendant and the ring in that order already last year, then the mount and now the recipe, all in 65 Tol'vir solves. Polishes fingernails on lapels and smiles.

Now for the hand pet. Steps into phone booth to change clothes.

got the recipe Recipe: Vial of the Sands after 5 Canopic Jars

Had alchemy 540 (goblin), decided to level up archeology for this recipe and farmed Kalilmdor digsites exclusively. Took Tol'vir digsites spawn as soon as they we're available.

Total artifacts farmed: 354
Dwarf: 1
Fossil: 74
Night elf: 203
Tol'vir: 59 (of which 5 were Canopic Jars)
Troll: 17

This include 18 rares (4 of them from Tol'vir: Scepter of Azj'Aqir, Ring of the Boy Emperor, Pendant of Scarab Storm and Mummified Monkey Paw).

I consider myself lucky. Good luck farming!

Just got my recipe today (I was up to my elbows in mummified organs..really messy) before this dropped for me. I had to open about 6 or 7 canopic jars before I got it. I had a 511 in alchemy so I still have to get 525 before it will let me learn it.

I recommend the Professor addon, which tallies up all the statistics of your archaeology digs automatically--so you don't need to worry with bothersome copy & paste scripts, or worse, having to count everything manually.

Power leveled Alchemy last night 1-525. Arch was already 525. I had 3 Uldum digsites I had already saved up-didn't want to bother till I had the Alchemy skill.

First project was a junk worth 10g.
Second project was a Canopic Jar

Busted open the jar and got Vial of Sands pat. :)

Third project now is the Ring of the Boy Emperor

I'm liking this RNG. *!@#$% bragging done.

After all the researce i did on the recipe i was pretty sceptic about starting to farm for this. Thinking it was going to take weeks. My first jar dropped after the fifth artifact and guess what! It contained the recipe: Vial of the Sands. Never been this lucky before :D

Well for my two cents - If you are going to look for this - Remember to do your transmute truegold -your going to need 10 - with a day cool down. I'm actually doing the two day one of first transmute create the Pyrite then transmute that into the Truegold - which share a cool down

The little hunter scooped away the gritty sand with her fingers, carefully exposing the jagged shards of broken pottery. Overhead, the blazing sun beat down, baking her armor and making the air shimmer. Her spirit beast pet prowled at her side, whining in irritation at having to endure the searing desert heat and the sand which always got stuck in his paws. For him, there was no killing, no excitement. Just his little hunter endlessly surveying the landscape all around Azeroth and digging up pieces of silly old objects and painstakingly piecing them together. The spirit cat noticed that she always seemed frustrated when on her digging jaunts, and she’d mutter constantly about wishing she could control which artifacts she searched for and how there were too many Night Elf digsites. He wondered why she bothered, then yawned sleepily, dismissing her puzzling behavior from his mind as he idly watched a scorpion scuttling by.

Meanwhile, the little hunter realized that these fragments were the final missing pieces for the canopic jar she’d been laboriously assembling from sites all across the desert sands of Uldum. Not for the first time, she wondered what catastrophic or mystical forces had acted upon the artifacts of the past. Each item’s fragments were scattered all around the world, rather than being located in one general area as would be expected.

She set the final piece of the jar in its place, and it suddenly became whole in her hands, an ancient magic she did not understand. She shook it lightly, and inside something rattled. That was nothing new. Each of the six previous canopic jars had contained mummified organs, some relic of civilization past. While each jar was clearly empty during the assembly process, when it became whole, somehow those mummified remains appeared. But not just mummified remains. The little hunter had learned that sometimes, if one was very favored and very fortunate, the jar might also contain a rare and ancient parchment. A recipe for alchemists such as herself, teaching her how to transform herself into a dragon strong enough to carry a friend, and how to provide this ability to others.

Long had the little hunter searched for canopic jars, and each had proved empty of anything except those dry and smelly organs. She never gave up hope, though, despite the unfathomable magic of archaeology forcing her to dig repeatedly for the artifacts of other races - especially Night Elf artifacts. Oh, how long she had spent in backbreaking labor, digging in dirt, rock, mud, and sand and piecing together items she didn’t even want. (She still blushed at the thought of the scandalous silk nightgown she’d found - remarkable not only for how its silk had survived being buried for so long but for how little material it used.) Yet she persevered, sure that somehow, some day, the gods of Azeroth would favor her.

Now, she ran her fingers lightly over the jar, and sighed. Yes, here was a canopic jar - that in itself was rare, to be allowed to find one - but her heart didn’t beat in anticipation as before. Some of her guildmates were near, and she told them that she would once again be bitterly disappointed by the contents of the jar, empty of all but the detestable organs that she was sure were there solely to mock her. Her hopes nearly extinguished, the little hunter opened the jar, and emptied its contents out onto the hot sands. Down plopped a mummified organ, its disagreeable mustiness permeating the air, but the little hunter paid it no mind as she watched a piece of dirty, cracking parchment drift gently to the ground. The jar fell from her nerveless fingers as she stared at the paper, unable to breathe. She could hardly pick it up as her hands shook from excitement, the frail paper rattling as she hastily scanned the spidery writing and faded diagrams. Yes! It was the recipe for the Vial of the Sands! It was hers at last! She learned it, feeling the ancient knowledge suffusing her like a warm golden glow.

Oblivious to the searing heat and her cranky pet, the little hunter did a dance of delight in the sands, shrieking aloud her happiness and shattering the midafternoon silence. Her pet cast a bored and slightly inquiring eye on her as she capered deliriously about, and she hugged him. “Come on, Telperion. I’m done being an archaeologist! No more digging! No more dusty armor! No more Night Elf digsites! No more sore muscles, long flights, and dirty fingernails! I found the recipe for Vial of the Sands! Let’s go to Orgrimmar to celebrate, and then, my friend, it’s back to the old times. Just you and me, the open road, and whatever adventures befall us!”

The spirit cat stretched lazily as the little hunter began performing the spell that would teleport them to Orgrimmar. He didn’t care what she had found, as long as it meant that they would leave this scorching desert and he would get to chase something very soon.

my experience...

ive read others say in their comments " dont let the dig sites build up in uldum run down there right away to dig them" not as affective as saving them up.. the time u spend traveling back and forth flying to digs and even porting makes this insanely retarded,, hearth stone in uldum then hit all southers digs working our way north and stay north til all digs are down south and travel down,,, usually 3 of the digs would be in uldum, and at least 1 would repawn in uldum making 4 and often times id be stuck down there for an addition 2-3 respawns before doing the move north again.. thats how i run EK as well,, gets things rolling fast, nice way to level ur toon as well if u have an alt with tailoring leatherworking or blacksmithing to catch their gear up on...

the very first jar i got had the recipe in it.. lucky me but not without tons of farming artifacts from everywhere, from lvl 75 to 83 90% of my xp earned was from arch no joke, im running a mage so its a bit easier with ports but still a grind, just dont understand this run down every time one pops up noise... run down with multiple spawns and get 2-3 artifacts each time u hit uldum not "almost enough" to do one

At this late stage of Cataclysm I had the choice of all this farming, random drops and expensive mats vs. buying them on trade where they are commonly selling for 21k. Since farming money is very easy for many now, I'd consider that instead of flying around the desert. Three evenings in GDKP runs did it for me.

Found it today in my 5th jar. After reading the comments here I was prepared to find it in the 20th or more. That was one of the most frustrating moments that I witnessed in wow until today, the major problem is not the long time that takes to drop the recipe from canopic jar, it is the long time Uldum's digsites respawns and the canopic jar... My advise for those who are tired: thinks always positive, say to yourself that it's only 6 time that you will have to farm epic 150 fragments and after that will be easier to get the jar (each epic only comes once) and if you have time to play make a goal as I did on doing a cap of 1 jar per day. BTW while I was looking for the recipe I got the mount, the ring and the pendant. Good luck.

I already had alchemy maxed out when I began the grind for Vial of the Sands. From level 1 archeology it took me:

17 canopic jars
18 rare artifacts (including 2 tol'vir)
365 common artifacts (including 75 tol'vir)

So, I finally got it late Friday night, this was the only reason I picked up archaeology. Started digging in Uldum at 82, which was a pain.

It took me 36 Tol'vir solves, in which I saw Ring of the Boy Emperor and Blessing of the Old God about half way through.

It was in my fifth Canopic Jar.

Some other info:

I had all the rare Night Elf solved, and all but one fossil. Once I was done with Night Elf, I did get Uldum more often. But still, I would keep digging until I got four dig sites in Uldum. Even then, I would get a Tol'vir site pop right back up.

All good stories must come to an end however...

Upon learning the recipe, I'm seeing it being sold on the AH for a little over the cost of mats :(

Oh well, at least I earned mine the hard way.

I just got super lucky. I grinded my alchemist's archaeology, did a few Tol'vir projects, and then got the stupid scarab pendant thing that required 150 tokens. *groan* Finished that, then did one more project, and finally got my first canopic jar project. Flew around kalimdor, got the sites, and solved it...

I closed my eyes and right clicked the jar... opened my eyes and there was the recipe. Wowhead says a 3% chance to get it from the jar.

For those of you who are discouraged, and have people telling you "lol good luck with that", keep going, and with some luck you'll get your recipe. I'm still in shock that I got it from my first jar. :D

Night elf warrior.

I've been working on this recipe since January, 2012. No luck on the first 3 Jars...

2 of my friends grinded archelogy from 1 to 525 in 3 days... They both got recipe on first jar. So i ask my buddy when his dropped what he was doing different than i was.

He said he filled the fragment counter almost to full and then he would do multiple projects in a few seconds... I would grind archeology on a full day many times but with no luck. I kept completing the projects as soon as i had enough fragments for any project.

I tried to fill up the fragment bars to full, got two rare projects, one click and the rare is gone and the next project is up, and i get two canoptic jar at the same time... the 4th jar had recipe and mummified organ in it, and the fifth jar had mummified organ as well.

I hope this helps, i was very discouraged every special project i would get, my friends way is better i think... I did grind archeology today for 10 hours in a row, but the recipe is worth the trouble.

7 months of trying every few weeks, 81 common, 17 rares. I dont do it everyday, it's supposed to be fun, i dont think the game feels like a job to me.

If this recipe were BoA I could farm it on my main along with all my other archaeology mounts/pets/epics, and it wouldn't even bother me that I'm up to 18 Canopic Jars with no recipe because hey, I don't have the Scimitar, Staff or Crawling Claw yet either so I'm going to have to keep digging anyway. But no, I have to keep chugging along on my Alchemy alt almost hoping I don't discover those things because I'm going to have to re-farm them again on my main anyway. And on my main I keep getting Canopic Jars and boy does it burn when you see those.

Warning this is the ugliest grind in the game that I have found my toon is up to 36 days at lvl 85 out of that 864 hours played most has been spent looking for artifacts so far NO Success. think about suspending my account every empty jar.

Have made 28 rare 869 common out of which only 35 where canopic jar's been maxed on Archeology and Alchemy over 1 year 1st canopic jar was over a year ago. good luck to those that attempt to find this recipe.

I know everyone is going to hate me for this, but I got the Vial of the Sands recipe on the second Canopic Jar I opened. My first jar was a bust, but after solving a rare artifact, I lucked out and got two Canopic Jars back-to-back. I solved both of them before opening one (I wanted to see if it was possible to carry more than one jar in your inventory - it is.) and the first one I opened had the recipe. After spending the last 12 months camping for Aeonaxx, I couldn't believe I got this so quickly. Maybe Blizzard figured I'd been punished enough.

I'm sure luck had something to do with it, but I also tried to keep my fragments maxxed out. I only solved when I had to to make room for more fragments. I also did digs in other areas until I had all four dig sites in Uldum. Then I'd go there and knock them all out at once. These are just bits of advice I picked up here and in the Blizzard forums.

So yeah, last Tuesday, my Archaeology was only at 100, and less than a week later I have the recipe.

Like some people have said, getting this recipe is without a doubt the most annoying thing I've ever attempted and have yet to claim as my own.

I got realm first alchemist, meaning I was 525 hours after cata launch, and my goal was this thing, after learning it came from archeology, I dove right into that.

But it being a RGN, inside a RGN inside yet ANOTHER RGN... it's the making for a lot of heart and headaches.
1) Pray it's a tol'vir.
2) Pray the solve nets you a Jar
3) Pray it's in there.

I'm attempting to get all the alchemy recipes in the game, and the ONLY one I'm missing, is this one. (291/292 recipes) So you can imagine my frustration at this thing still not showing it's face. I'd pay some good gold for this recipe if it became BoE.
