I just got one of these and was standing in Shattrath and accidentally right clicked it and it disappeared. Pro tip: Don't use it until you're under the flaming breath of Onyxia.

i had the quest when the new onyxia arrived.

the quest was removed from my log.

the quest item no longer has a "use" function to it anymore. it's just there.

you cannot do this quest anymore.

Only problem with this Unfired Ancient Blade is that it can actually be used anywhere, whereas it will be removed from your inventory and promply planted in the ground, no matter where you stand. I do hope this is a bug of some sort, as it otherwise means that you will be missing the quest prereq item in order to actually be able to complete the quest.

That's what happened to my lvl 60 Warrior when I accidentally clicked the blade while rearranging my inventory while inside Dire Maul. If anyone else experiences similar problems and figures out a solution, do let's hear :)

This drops off of the imprisoned beast in the west instance of DM. I got one the other day. I think it is a very low drop rate maybe 1% for the epic book. The quest that follows is much much harder than obtaining the book. Gl to all this weapon is beastly

Is this item still bound to you when you use it and it sticks in the ground? or do you have to hope the other 39 people you're with don't steal it?

The book can drop off of any boss in DM... I got it on the 2nd boss in DM-East.

Do you have to find this after getting the book and talking to the guy in DM, or does he give it to you when you have the book/start the quest?

also, do you have to equip the untreated blade when onyxia breathes fire on you?

I just turned in the book and completed that portion of the quest, but I have no sword. I wasnt able to read the text because my groop was disbanded and I only had a few seconds before i was ported. How do i get this sword, after i complete the quest do i have to talk to somebody again in the library? or was that supposed to be a reward for completing?

Yeah that is odd. There is no ? over his head or anything after turning in book. It's like many quests, you need to keep talking to them again and again and again to cycle through their verbage.

I almost left too after turning in the book. You need to go back to him and walk through his continuing dialogue till he hands you the unfired blade. Just keep talking to him till he has the quest pending in the dialogue chat.

Anyone know how to use the unfired blade? Do you have to be the MT getting breathed on? Is the breath weapon an aoe? Is it you or the blade in the ground that needs to be breathed on?

Would it be ideal to stick it in the ground at the feet of MT and Onyxia is at 20% or something?

If you use the blade but fail to down Onxia, do you just need to go to the DM NPC to get another unfired blade, and does this require abandoning the current failed mission?

If you use the sword by accident go back to the Quest giver , Drop the quest and he will regive it Via the white bubbles.

I got the sword and planted it in front of ony by our main tank when ony was at about 15%. when she died we looked all over for the sword but no one could find it and when onyxia's body disappeared, there was no sword under her. I know i can get a new sword and go back next week but do you think that a GM would be able to get me the treated sword (objective of the quest)?

I saw an "Ancient Unfired Sword" struck into the ground in front of SW bank. Thats why I started searching it on thottbot. I guess someone used one of these accidentally there. lol

I right clicked on it trying to link it by accident. This planted the sword in the wooden steps to the blimp in Tirsfall Glades.

I could see the sword in front of me. I paniced. All you have to do is go back, forget the quest and he'll give you another one.

i Clicked on this to see if i could equip it. The weapon/item just completely disappeared. i searched through my bags for it for about a minute, then gave up, abandoned quest, and the guy in the library gave it to me again.Wouldve been worse if i hadnt been inside library the whole time.

does indeed start from the epic book drop "Foror's Compendium of Dragon Slaying" in Dire Maul. i got mine off the hunter Ravenoak in the western instance. my guess is it can be from any of the bosses, although the book is not BoP so good news for the greedy folk, bad news for warriors and paladins. expect to see them on the AHs occasionally for a high pricetag.

Pretty sure it starts with a BOP epic drop of the book "Foror's Guide to Dragonslaying" or some such in Dire Maul.

This Unfired Ancient Blade remains only for 5 min in the ground. After that it will despawn (Place Unfired Blade is noted as 5 min duration in the database)
So place the sword in P3 when you see that it's going to be a safe kill around 5-10% or so (depending on how many of your raid are still alive).
Let Onyxia breath fire on it. Loot it immidiately to get Heated Ancient Blade. This heated item remains for another 20min in your inventory.
Then kill Onyxia and stick the sword into her dead body to get Treated Ancient Blade.

If player failed this step, he has to abandon the quest and retake it, to get a new Unfired Ancient Blade.
