In Nagrand there are several places that have air elementals. All of them have a chance to drop the motes of air.

A good place to farm for these, once you have your flying mount, is the Elemental Plain. This is a hidden area only reachable by flying mount above the Throne of Elements in Nagrand. There are many fire and air elementals there, on a fast respawn timer.

You can far Motes of Air very quickly, and these can be turned into Primal Air.

better to farm them north on the shadowmoon map, elemental plataeu is being farmed 24/7 , i can pick up a descent amount of motes in shadowmoon ..

for a protection warrior like myself, i have better luck farming the Motes of Air from the 65, 66, 67 air elementals all around Nagrand and the ones that are 69, 70 in Shadowmoon Valley. less competition, faster killing equals more Motes of Air per hour than my prot tanking self trying to farm the hard-hitting 70-71 elementals at the plateau.

also, note that the spot is choke full of elementals, it is also choke full of warlocks and hunters farming the crap outta motes. i check it out to see what its like up there few times a day at different times, and now that its summer, the kiddie alliance aren't in school anymore and don't have to work so they are up there farming at all times of the day now. terrible farming spot, unless you are a warlock or hunter yourself to minimize downtime between elementals.

A place I has found to be a good farming-spot is in Shadowmoon Valley as mentioned above. The mobs go down pretty easy (5,5k hp). You can find them north-east of Altar of Sha'tar and south-east of Warden's Cage (just a bit west of the big crystals on your map) as well as along the edge facing Netherwing Ledge. Happy farming!

It would seem as though the information on the {{Created By}} tab is wrong. It says {{Create Primal Air}} only requires 9 motes. It requires 10. I know, it's easy to spot, just saying.........

Just farmed for 10 min in Shadowmoon. 0 Drops of air from these mobs. Guess blizz nerfed the drop rate, or maybe they dont drop at all anymore. Gave up, heading back to org to try and find someone who can xmute

Those primals now sells from 150g each on my server. In half an hour, I can farm around 4-5 of them in nagrand from gas clouds and plateau. Of course, not selling them, transmuting them in primal might is more profitable.

In TBC I would find only 1-2 motes of air every 25 to 40 elemental kills, which was quite annoying (it was the worst experience I had with the bad drop rate of certain items, tied with the Golden Pearl one - you probably know what I mean, if you're an enchanter that had to farm the mats to make the enchanting rods).
Now, that my new char is lvl60, I visited the Shadowmoon Valley spot to check if this location is better for me... and it was, 4 motes after 5 kills.

So, if we say the drop rate of the motes is really the same for mobs of the mentioned locations, either I was always unlucky in Nagrand, or I was too lucky for those 10 minutes in SmV.

p.s. From my experience, you don't see items that are air, like this, drop as often as their fire, etc. versions. ...Maybe they made it like that cause the air is "harder" to be caught ?(like mana or fire are easily caught... oh well, just a thought.)

Edit: it seems I wasn't the only one who's luckier in SmV (Biffsterr's theory would make sense, and... overall, SmV seems like the right place for farming these, for all the reasons Biffsterr mentioned... especially about elementals in SmV being in a smaller area while in Nagrand they're scattered).

From past reading and being a data analyst, I know that Blizzard utilizes data models that predict probability. X number of kills yields a chance of X number of drops. My personal take is that they base it on the continent or zone. In this case, Outland. I also believe, based on experience, that the number of other people killing specific mobs, and thereby farming the items that drop, affects your chances. So, if someone else has been farming before you do, you may see less motes of air. This is a hypothesis, I don't really know. How does this affect you? It's difficult to say because there's no way you can tell what other people are doing and when they did it.

That said, this morning I farmed motes of air starting at the elemental plateau. After killing every air elemental, I had six motes. I flew to Shadowmoon and went to the netherwing area where the air elementals are. I got several drops of two motes and was able to farm enough for the rest of the requirement of four primal air within about a half hour. So, six motes in Nagrand and thirty-three in Shadowmoon (I already had one mote of air before this farming expedition). Does that mean you'll have the same luck? No. Remember, the key to drop rates is the word "chance".

I recommend Shadowmoon, though, because the respawn rate and the number of air elementals is much higher there than it is at the elemental plateau. Also, yes you can probably find as many air elementals in Nagrand overall but you'll have to cover far more area than you will in Shadowmoon.

These suckers are extremely rare on Kael'thas. I have been searching for them for the past 2 weeks and they seldom pop up. If they do, it's for 150+ gold. The other Primals are always around and sell for nothing. Why are these so rare?

The air elementals in Elemental Plateau tend to drop more Motes when you take them on 1on1, or is it just my luck?
Every time i grouped them up and swiped them down, they didn't drop any motes.

Cleared the entire elemental plateau with no drops beyond an elemental fragment. Did them one by one on the next spawn & gathered 8 motes. result. Ty Mummer :)

Mobs in elemental plateau have a high chance of dropping 2 motes.

The best place to farm these is actually..... All over outland in all the areas the air mobs spawn. This is why, at higher levels you literally be one shotting these mobs. So, you can either run around killing fire elementals and earth and water, OR you can pop to the other zones, clean out the air mobs, rinse and repeat.

Elemental Plateau does seem to be the best if you only need 1 or 2, but if you need 4+ do the farming circuit. This gives the most motes in the least time (have fast flying)

Realm hopping on Elemental Plateau is probably the best way to farm air and fire primals these days. By the time you kill them on another realm, the elementals should have respawned on yours.

Primal Water can be transmuted into Primal Air. It requires Cenarian Expedition revered reputation to buy the recipe.

Primal Air tends to be the rarest of the Primal elemental materials, though fire and shadow are almost as rare.

If you don't have mats to do more expensive Transmutes like Living Steel, you can make a good profit Transmuting Primal Earth to Water (sporeggar revered) and then transmuting (with the next transmute cooldown) the Primal Water to Air. I suggest this because Primal Earth is consistently Dirt cheap due to the motes coming from mining nodes. While Prices vary heavily by server and expansion, I can currently buy Primal Earth for 15g, sell Primal water for 200g, and sell Primal Air for 700g+.)

(Using these transmutes has a chance to teach you Mana to Fire, Fire to Mana, and Water to Shadow. Also note Primal Mana is sometimes dirt cheap due it dropping from mobs in the 10 man raid version of Karazhan.)

I suggest against transmuting Primal Air into Primal Fire.
