In order to capture a soul with Gabbia dell'Anima Vuota (crafted by Oreficeria), the elemental must die while casting Inalatore d'Anima Ultraccelerato (crafted by Ingegneria). The best method is to use dots, as well as stuns to prevent any abilities that may interrupt the cast. Once you receive the soul. do not open the item until the "Encaged" turns into "Docile", which will happen once the 15-minute timer expires. Docile souls may contain pets, but the majority of the time it will contain the elemental crafting reagent,

Honestly, what a trashy mechanic for getting materials. You're at a huge advantage if you're a hunter or Warlock to be honest.

As a Warrior the only way I've been able to solo these is as follows:

1. Get them to 10%-ish health, use my only reliable DoT which is Odyn's Fury, and then hope that I do the 'goldilocks' amount of damage that isn't going to nuke the guy but is going to be enough for Zapthrottle.

2. Get them to 5%, auto-attack until they are 1-2%, then Zapthrottle once or twice to do the remaining damage. This way is the most reliable way and works on any character, but sometimes you just randomly crit the dumb rock and have to do the whole process again.

Luckily whilst they do hit decently, I have enough healing abilities to deal with it. I can Impending Victory every 25 seconds but I do make sure to have a health potion nearby in case because if they are at 8,000hp or less I'm going to just use Zapthrottle a couple times to do the remaining damage so I'll need a way to heal myself while I run around getting whacked.

Dealing with the fire elementals listed in the other comment is a whole cancerious affair in itself. They may just cast up the shield whilst you're Zapthrottling or relying on a DoT, or they may cast that ability that stuns you, either way tough luck bozo try again.

On top of that the whole 15 minute cooldown? Can't even suck up how annoying this process is and try and farm a few in one go.

In conclusion, not fun, if you really want to get these it's probably easier to just do a low-key mythic or Normal/Heroic dungeon with the eles you want. If you can get a group together to get some of these open world then great! But no one is doing a farm group with an item with a 15 second respawn. I do recommending checking every World Quest to see if any have anything to do with elemental elites as that's a sure-fire way to get these easily, I've also got one off of a rare elite.

Fun Fact: if you happen to not be paying attention and 'capture' one with full inventory, you don't get anything except a 15 minute cooldown.

When solo, this item is terrible for classes that do not have strong dots or pet tanks.

I love getting killed over and over again while pulling elite ads that 2 shot me in 380 gear while I try to use an item on the GCD while killing a mob that is constantly disorienting me and preventing me from using the item. This is an amazing experience. Whoever made this is an honest to god @#$%^. I love also having to fly 1k meters back every minute after this inevitably happens. I've never logged into the game and wanted to log out so quickly.

OK, I'm an idiot, the Zapthrottle channel does not kill the mob. It needs to die while the channel is happening (from DoTs, for example). Thanks to @Snowrulez for pointing this out.

I'll leave this comment up for any other dumdums who couldn't figure this out, even after reading the other comments.

As a prot warrior, I've found this strat reliable: stun > use on use damage trinket like Windscar Whetstone at 15-25% health > rightclick zapthrottle soul inhaler from inv/bar > okay bind on use prompt

This is how I did it solo as MW after many tedious minutes. Make sure you have paralysis and Ring of Peace and make sure you're not running talent that gives dots on your attacks.

Get the mob to 2k hp, then roll/torpedo away, ring of peace it as it walks towards you, paralysis and then use Zapthrottle to kill it off. 2k HP is because it does about 1100 per tick and you can get 2 ticks before he casts the aoe disorientate

Tip for monks to make it easy....

1. Be in Windwalker spec, with Paralysis and Storm, Earth, and Fire talented.
2. Bring the elemental to very low health (10-20k). I just melee'd when it was getting low to fine-tune.
3. Use Paralysis.
4. Back away from the mob a bit.
5. Cast Storm, Earth and Fire. This will summon your spirits, but if you aren't actively attacking the elemental they will just stand next to you.
6. While targeting the elemental, hit that cast of Storm, Earth, and Fire a second time. This will cause them to head to your target to finish it off.
7. Use the Zapthrottle Soul Inhaler quickly (this is the reason you want to stand back a bit from the target - so you have time after ordering your spirits to attack to start the channel before they get to it).
8. Loot.

...as we now are on "Embers of Neltharion" Patch, and it's not a big problem to solo a 451k mob,

You can channel the Inhaler while moving!

Keep this in mind because you will have to move out or the AoE effect (didn't look/link it up for now) which will otherwise disorient you.
(which will cause the device to be on cooldown, although you have not debuffed the elemental yet - as mentioned below)

Or just try to channel it while the elemental casts that shielding spell onto itself.

Another thing one might want to keep in mind.

the dialogue "using this will bind it to you" might have you rethink whether to start channelling while the elemental already is casting the disorientation.

Or better yet, just keep moving!

and as someone else mentioned before:

Get these on the character which wants the item crafted (in case you did it to yourself and went to get the correspoonding materials with the crafter instead, no!)

the actual problem might be that you will have to use

CAUTION: If you start channelling, but happen to be standing in the disorient effect, (before channelling to the end)
the device will be on cooldown

(and one might wonder if it really made sense to hold on for another 30 seconds instead of killing the elemental and waiting for the rest to cool down, doing it properly the next time!)

I was as fortunate as to have it build up the shield while channelling the next time
(and also was able to remove the shield afterwards) doing it from such a range that a somewhat stressful "kill before running away" happened while kiting and resetting the others that added along the way.

As it seems you don't have to loot the creature. I still did for some grey item but the cage was filled before that.. stun, AoE snare and ran off.

If you're an evoker farming the souls for the legendary, it's kind of a pain since the encaged souls of each individual element are unique and you have to wait 15 minutes before you can capture another (of the same element).

For me the fastest thing to do was go in a circle around the dragon isles and collect one of each, by the time I re-started the route 15 minutes had passed on the first element . It took about an hour to get 3 of each.

Waking shores Elementale Spaccaterra -> Ohn'aran Plains Colosso Tempestoso -> Plains again Forza delle Primavere -> Azure Span Elementale del Fuoco then I hearthed and started back in waking shores.

If you have a tank friend that can taunt so you can channel it makes it a lot easier.

This is ridiculous. I finally get this crap done, and get an encaged firey soul. Which ISN'T a Fiery Soul to craft the ^$%#ing idol. I open in, and all I get is awakened fire and the glass. A pain in my ASS. screw this $#!% and wow

I didn't see these mentioned when browsing wowhead for info on how to acquire these items for the legendary or how to use the Zapthrottle so I'll just mention them here.

1- Even though each Engaged Soul has a different name you can only have 1 Enaged Soul at a time regardless of its name. If you attempt to Encage another Soul the Zapthrottle fails and gets put on a 45-second cooldown but your Empty Soul Cage is still consumed.
2. You can move while casting, and you do not need to kill the elemental with the Zapthrottle, the elemental simply needs to die within 30 seconds of you using the item. So if you can nuke the enemy in under 30 seconds you can use the Zapthrottle when it's most convenient to avoid interrupts.
3. If the enemy interrupts you while casting the Zapthrottle goes on a 5min cooldown, there have been a few cases where I got interrupted at the last possible second but I still got the credit, and other cases where I didn't but the Empty Soul Cage was still consumed. Regardless if you get interrupted during the cast the Zapthrottle will go on a 5min cooldown, however, a soul cage isn't always consumed I've tried figuring out what the condition for one being consumed but it feels almost random as sometimes it's consumed on a failure and sometimes it isn't. I even had one instance where I clearly failed but I still got the Encaged Soul. /shrug So expect this to be a very annoying, tedious, and expensive process.
4. The Water and Air elements recommended above are easily soloable for the Evoker legendary. The Fire Elemental however really isn't as he casts too many spells that need to be interrupted so you'll want to bring a buddy along to draw attention while you complete your cast. The Earth Elemental is a similar story but he's more doable than the Fire Elemental if you wanna solo these guys, you simply need to wait until he casts his first two abilities, use the Zapthrottle then down him. Otherwise his seismic toss -which is not interruptable - will ruin your cast.
5. In a perfect world where you nail every attempt on the first try you'll need 12 Empty Soul Cages, and 3hrs of your time not including the travel time between each mob. In reality expect to need more Empty Soul Cages, a buddy, and significantly more of your time.

Imbu (Airy and Frosty Soul):

Vakthros (Fiery and Earthen Soul):
/way #2024 78.6 38.8 Fire Elemental and Elemental Punisher

Elemental Punisher gives Earthen Soul

Instead of going across all Dragon Isles like most of these posts say, just stay on Azure Span on two zones near each other (Didn't see info on other posts about either Water Elemental nor Elemental Punisher, so just tested it)

As a Demon Hunter. Drop a Sigil of Misery on the elemental. This disorientates it for 20 secs. Channel the Zapthrottle, take a deep breath then nuke it
