These drop of 25man bosses on their "hard" modes in Uldaur. You combine 30 of them to recieve the legendary quest item https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=45039. Once you recieve that item, you turn it into an NPC inside the Archivum. who then gives you a quest to go into Yogg-Saron's brain and defeat him. Once you do this, you will recieve your weapon!

*UPDATE*

As of 4/8/09 there has been an update on the quest. After you collect the shards and recieve the quest to make the mace, you have to throw the shards INTO Yogg-Saron's maw while he is casting defeaning roar. (This is predicted to be casted somewhat later into the fight)

well now all classed have had their peice of the legendary cake.
warriors,rogues got thunderfury in vanilla wow, warglaves in TBC, warriors and other 2hand melee dps also got sulfuras. casters got Atiesh in vanilla wow, and hunters (and rogues lol) got Thori'dal in TBC. this is just setting the scales even.

If fragments are a guaranteed drop from every Ulduar hard-mode, top guilds will be getting 11 fragments per week. This means one mace each month, which will make them extremely common next to the other legendaries we've seen in the game.

Of course there's still a chance hard modes will be hard, but I'm betting against it from what we've seen so far on the PTR.

I would say gratts to the healer that get the first fragment in a guild. Guess that if the Guild master and the officer got any common sence they let the guy that got the first1 have prio on the others aswell. My personal opinion is that there is just silly to have 2 healers with 15 fragments each.

The drop rates being reported right now are very preliminary, of course, since the instance has only been out for about a week. However, it looks like Blizzard has tuned this to a roughly 10% drop rate on "easy mode" encounters.

Given that (and assuming my math is right):

The odds of assembling 30 fragments after exactly 30 boss kills are so infinitesimally small that it's not even worth reporting.

The odds of assembling 30 after 140 bosses (10 full clears) are roughly 0.004812%.

The odds of assembling 30 after 280 bosses (20 full clears) are roughly 37.339683%.

The odds of assembling 30 after 320 bosses (30 full clears) are roughly 98.271345%.

Notes:

A) Most guilds won't full clear the place the first few weeks. That will likely increase the length of time (but not the number of boss kills) required for a full mace.

B) Many guilds will be moving to "hard mode" bosses well before 30 weeks. Hard mode bosses should have a higher drop rate, hence reducing both the time and the number of boss kills required to assemble a mace - by how much, it is impossible to compute at present.

Assuming that we have another 4-6 months before the next content patch, raid groups that keep after this place through that time should have decent odds (but no guarantee) of assembling exactly one mace. Raid groups that continue farming it for some time after the next raid comes out should have very good odds of assembling a mace.

Legendary mace.

The droprate is 12% for each of the 30 fragments wich means 250 bosses need to be killed for a complete mace.
30/0,12=250

There are 13 bosses to be killed and one that is not.
So 250/13=19 resets.

19/4= 5 months on average to gather the pieces.

The instance will be very old and tired by then and the mace will never see the daylight for many that have fragments.
I feel like this timespan is quite a turnoff, but 3 months would be more like a fair deal.

Yay! I was hoping that I wasn't going to end up ceding this to one of our druids or priests, being the first in line to get this in our guild and being a shammy. I'm seeing a lot of comments on mmo-champion to the effect that this is not itemized well with its lack of regen, but remember you can't compare it directly to the amazing staves that drop in Ulduar unless you're accounting for the offhand you would couple this with. Also, most healers should be able to afford losing regen on their weapon at this level anyway when every other piece of gear for the spirit regenners has, well, spirit lol.

If I am reading WoW Armory correctly, at http://www.wowarmory.com/item-info.xml?i=45038. These shards actually have a very low chance of dropping on some of the later bosses in Normal Ulduar.

EDIT: Not sure why this is downrated, seeing that Blizzard says it has a chance of dropping from Normal mode too is insightful.

Shard dropped for us in 25 man off razorscale, didnt get the shard but i got the mace the he drops tho :-)

It's worth noting, that altough the recipe Forming Val'anyr, Gavel of Ancient Kings states that you need 29 fragments, the real number you need is 30, because of the game considerating one shard as starting the spell and getting destroyed and then destroying another 29 to complete the spell so the total amount of shards needed is 30.

Do note that, if indeed the fragments have a chance of dropping out of 10 man Ulduar, and a said person Full Clears BOTH 10 Ulduar and 25 Ulduar, it would be much faster to gain Fragments, and be able to produce a mace even earlier than ~13 Weeks. This would give approx 2/4 Guaranteed Fragments(Dependant on Algalon), and then whatever luck you may get for the other 12 Bosses.
