To enchanters, from a tank, please do NOT waste any money on buying this enchant unless you are a 'completionist' and like to have all the recipes. I can assure you that this enchant is not worthwhile for the overwhelming majority of tanks, since +18 stamina to shield is a far better choice.

What's worse, is that this enchant is actually WORSE than the level 60 enchant. Formula: Enchant Shield - Lesser Block, ( https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=11168 ) provides for +10 block rating, which gives you +2% to block rating at level 60. Even at level 60 this was a questionable enchant, but for 1.9% at level 70 it is a total waste, and certainly not worth the mats. Even if it was double I would still have a hard time justifying it.

So if you were eyeing this on the AH and wondered if it is worth the hundreds of gold that someone is asking for it, the answer is a big NO. Grab it if you want to complete your recipes, but don't buy it expecting anyone to be interested in wanting the enchant done.

So I'm being told by one of the Enchanters is my Guild (I maintain the guild's available enchants list) is telling me that Enchant Shield: Shield Block seems to have been changed in 2.4. He's saying that it now gives +18 block rating instead of +15. Can anyone else confirm/deny this? I'm aware that Wowhead and other sites like it say that it's still +15.... but I'm trying to see if it was something that was just overlooked and/or nobody's noticed it yet?

I have an enchant called Enchant Sheild - tough sheild does 18 block "value". I dont see this enchant on thottbot and i'm also curious if block "value" is the same as the block "rating" that this enchant does. Mine requires 6 arcane dust 10 primal earth so similar. Very confused priest any info would be lubaly.

For some strange reason i got this for 8g on Skullcrusher EU. Stranger ever, no warrior seems to be interested at block rating. They say they already block enough and go for stamina. Blah.

Someone tell our warriors why they must have this :p

So I'm spamming the trade channels, hoping to get my shield enchanted with this, and I get like 5 tells with people saying they have it. I ask them to link it to me, and they were ALL WRONG.

Tough Shield and Shield Block are two complete different things, people.

Tough Shield: Shield Block Value. That means that whenever you do block with your shield, more damage is absorbed by it.

Shield Block: Shield Block Rating. That means the chance you have to block with your shield increases.

This is mainly to the enchanters on not to mix these two up. They are 100% different.

it is possible to have a this on a 29 twink... it would have to be a quest reward shield with an ilvl (item lvl) of 35.. meaning a lvl 29 can do a lvl 35 quest.. not sure if there are any lvl ilvl 35 shields for rewards though.

same way twink hunters get there +7 dam scopes on there green quest reward gun's :)

really nice enchant for a prot spec pally

since warriors will almost always go for the +18 stam enchant instead since they are uncrushable with shieldblock up anyway

whereas a prot spec pally needs significantly better gear before they can just focus on stacking +stam, and so the 2% extra shield block chance of this enchant is wicked for us :)

Obviously you know nothing about shield block and shield block value. Blocking an attack does not mean you take no damage. It means you block SOME of the damage hence the block value of said shield. Any tank who has ever tanked anything higher than their level will tell you this. If you have a block value of 500 you will block 500 damage of an attack IF you block the attack. A mob hitting you for 500 damage or less will have all of it blocked whereas a mob hitting you for 501 or more will have 500 of it blocked meaning you take 1 damage or more if he hits harder.

As for crushing blows, any attack that is blocked dodged or parried can neither be crushing nor be a critical hit. Having a 102.4% in miss/dodge/block/parry rate makes the character immune to crushing blows. Visit http://www.wowwiki.com/Crushing_blow for more indepth information on this.

Who in the world would want to do that. Block rating is a way to AVOID damage so healers don't use up all their mana. If you're looking to maximize dmg taken you're just draining everyone's mana. Most experienced tanks will look to avoid dmg hence going for block rating, seems you don't know smack about tanking, you MUST block an attack in order for your block value to asborb the dmg in the first place.

Being a pretty decent (warrior)tank imo I would go for +block value over +block rating any day. Like the person above was saying it is much easier for healers when you are taking steady damage (yes i do have a 70 healer so i know what i'm talking about). It's great for hots that can gradually heal you at little mana consumption.

What the poster above was saying is mostly right, you don't want to stack all avoidance because then when you do get hit it will be hard because you have less block value, armor etc, making all the healers start queuing up the big heals all at once which drains a ton of mana. In a perfect world yes all avoidance would be best but healers arent perfect and the easiest way is to lessen the dmg taken instead of outright avoiding 2+ attacks in a row Usually.

Also block rating becomes much less useful once your block value exceeds 102ish% with shield block up, which will stop nearly all crushing blows from landing on most bosses (prince being an exception because he hits faster which takes down shield block quick which leaves you vulnerable to crushing blows, thus making phase 2 stressing on healers)

On a side note i would take the +18 stam enchant over this one until i'm pushing about 20k hp raid buffed, then you will probably start stacking as much block value as you can without nerfing your hp too badly. (Getting a bit of dodge / parry after 20k doesn't hurt either of course)

I'm no Tank, but my alt is an enchanter. I guess you put on your shield whatever you want but according to WOW forums, info on WOW threads and WOWIKI, Block rating is, and I'll quote "MUCH MORE VALUABLE", than block value.

So take it for what its worth.

the block rating enchant gives 1.9 block rating, and for the people who don't know the insane difference between block rating and block value, listen up

block rating is one of the 4 avoidance stats (which are miss, dodge, block and parry) and in order to avoid crushing blows (150% damage, I have been told nothing in heroics crush, but anything past that, such as karazhan, does) but it does NOTHING to mitigate critical strikes, for that you need to have 490 defense to be uncrittable. in order to throw crushing blows out the window is to have a total of 102.4% TOTAL avoidance (the formula is

now, im not saying block VALUE is useless, but until you hit that crucial avoidance cap for big raids, your not going to last very long anyways, so don't bother stacking up block value... BUT, it does affect how much damage you take when you block with your shield, and affects how much damage shield bash does for warriors. it is possible to completely absorb an attack if you have enough block VALUE, although in heroics and raids the number needed is insane.

most warriors prefer to stack block value instead of rating because of their shield block ability, which gives them an extra 75% shield block for the next 2 hits, which would render any block over 25% effectively useless while that ability is up (which it almost always is)

for paladins block rating is better than block value (imo) because of the fact that the more often you block, the more threat and aggro generation you have when you have aggro, making your job THAT much easier. and since the block rating 'cap' is 65% for paladins, you don't have to worry about overstacking block at all

for warriors, blocking is merely the worst way of damage mitigation, that needs to be buffed up by block value to be made useful. but for paladins, blocking is a huge source of threat, and is vital to tankadins.

but either way, the block value enchant isn't very useful if your starting to tank, as you should be focusing on getting your avoidance cap, defense cap, and your HP above 12k

Very useful for Paladins, where alot of their threat is generated from blocking, every little bit helps.

I'm on a lower population server (Demon Soul) and i found this enchant on the AH for 400g BO. Much rather find someone to do this enchant for me than buy it and use it on my own for that price.

This dropped for me in Shadowmoon Valley by an Enraged Earth Spirit and sold it in the AH for 500g within 3 hours. (On a Monday!) Just thought some real world value would be helpful.
