This guy starts off at LHC and apparently twice a day starts a caravan westward, which happens to agro everything in sight. If any of the mules die, it's over. It's not too hard if you have some aoe since you can't seem to pull agro off him, just burn down the mobs before they kill anything.

Anyone know if there's a fixed time for the caravan to go out?
Today, at about 2150 I caught the caravan getting hit right outside LHC.

You can't pull aggro from the mobs it seems, but taunt does work.

Hints for this quest, having just done it myself.

I have managed to see Guard Didler only about a handful of times in the two and a half years I've played this game, nearly all of them he was at 10% health, finishing off the last skeletal mage that had bumrushed him at the very beginning of his journey. Just once did I manage to see him at the very beginning of the journey, which was today.

I would either recommend putting out enough AoE damage to take out multiple level 55-58 mobs before would be able to kill the level 50 mules, or have the ability to heal. If you can heal, then hit Ctrl+V and turn on the mules' healthbars. Don't worry about Guard Didler. As a holy paladin, a simple max-rank flash of light on a mule at 50% health was more than enough to keep them alive.

Your path will lead you along the trench that spans from the Browman Mill all the way to just north of Blackwood Lake. The Mules aggro virtually everything in compass range. The trek takes about 20-30 minutes.

When you arrive at the Argent Dawn outpost north of Blackwood Lake, pick up this "Writ of Safe Passage" quest from Guard Didler and REMAIN AT THE OUTPOST. I had initially took off to Light's Hope Chapel to turn it in, but realized that it had to be signed by an NPC back at the outpost. I rushed back (100% mount, crusader aura) and a few seconds later, the NPC -- Field Marshal Chambers -- rode up to the outpost.

Guard Didler will announce Chambers' approach. Chambers' will walk up to Didler and dismiss him (despawning him) and then will walk over to one of the main tents. It is then you will be able to talk to Chambers and get your writ signed. THEN, you may proceed back to Light's Hope Chapel and turn in your quest to Dispatch Commander Metz.

It IS possible for the donkeys to aggro the scarlet courier, in which case her and the 4 elite guards will just about 3 shot each of the donkeys, and since you can't pull aggro off the pack-mules you are basically screwed if this happens. It's just a very unlucky thing that can happen.

This does not count for total quests completed. I assume, then, it also does not count for Loremaster of Eastern Kingdoms (had already completed that on the character that managed to be in Light's Hope at the time the mules deployed).

It seems that ALL the mules must survive for him to offer the quest. I rode by as he and one mule remaining (not sure how many he had to begin with) were surrounded by a group of mobs.

The NPC Packmaster Stonebruiser says "Our caravans go out 'bout twice a day" so it's no wonder most of us haven't seen it before...

Can anyone take the quest once the caravan is rescued? Or one person, party members, anyone, both factions?

My log shows that Guard Didier spawns every 2hr 20min - 3hr 30min so you only need a bit patience :)

i was mining around Eastern Plaguelands and was lucky enough to catch Didier just leaving with the mules.
all of this was happening at 20:20 server time on Frostwhisper-EU.

it seems that the mules and Guard Didier have a special "buff" that taunts every nearby aggressive creature every two seconds: Mark of Didier

since i never ever was able to catch him previously therefore i decided to get along with them and help them out:
by Light's Hope there was a bigger pull but other than that there was just easily managable single pulls.

as an enhancement shaman i was trying to pull aggro with Frost Shock, but it didn't work at all:
with Windfury Weapon procs i was able to almost pull aggro, but when i got those procs it also meant that i almost killed the attacking creature :P

if you can heal, just keep healing the mules to overaggro them.

so, after 15 minutes of walking we got to the camp finally and Didier offered me his quest then nothing more happened so i tried to chat with him a little:

Whew! That was some hard work, <class>. I haven't seen the Scourge this aggressive since…

<Guard Didier swallows hard.>

my guess he's some kind of survivor, a war veteran …

after accepting the quest and one minute later Didier said:

I think I hear something! Chambers must be coming. Make way! Make way!

ok, i understand. i just sat down on the nearby hill.

after waiting another 5 minutes, Field Marshal Chambers just popped out of nowhere, activated his Retribution Aura and walked up on us and told Didier:

Job well done, soldier. Dismissed!

and then started bragging about the job he has to do –

Alright, I'll sign writs now. Bring 'em to the front, maggots.

he walked up to the bonefire so i thought it's time to ask him about my writ:

<Field Marshal Chambers growls.>

So you're the riff-raff that assisted Didier in getting the supplies here in one piece?
Where are the rest of you? I know there's gotta be more. Chickens like you generally roam in huge packs.

Bah, just give me the damned writ so I can sign off on it.

all i could said to this rude person was

Yes, sir! Thank you, sir!

then he signed my papers and pointed at the distance sending me away…

about the quest: my guess is that anyone could accept Didier's quest if he or she arrives in that one minute window when he offers it.

I arrived in LHC at 6:00pm server time and he was there, waited until 8:30pm server time and he never moved an inch. Went to see a movie... I log back at 1am and he's still there! I really dunno how to make him start his escort quest :/

Edit: I kept my PC on all night watching the TV and playing some other games and didnt really sleep... long story short: It's now 2:40pm and he's still there. So from 6pm yesterday to 2:40pm now he just stay there with his mules >:(

Edit2: I called a GM after camping the NPC for 24+ hours... apparently the quest bugs sometimes and they do not know what is causing it. They are working on a fix.

Well, my girlfriend and I were wandering through the camp, headed towards Tyr's Hand when we saw a group of about 5 slimes attacking some mules. We checked WoWHead for 'Didier', and found this NPC and these comments.

We guarded him until he got to that narrow tunnel-like valley, and then he aggroed the Crimson Couriers.

Bastards.

Few notes on this quest.

Guard Didier spawns at 72.1 53.1 between the tree and the slope into the crevice/pit with the slimes and immediately starts moving.
When he spawns he and the donkeys immediately aggro 3-4 slimes and sometimes a random mob from the farm near by.

If you see him standing at Light's Hope, he is bugged, report it or wait for Tuesday resets.

When I was waiting for him he spawned at 7:10 am, 7:50 am , and 7:59 pm.

There is still (8/14/10) an article listed on Wowwiki that claims this escort happens twice a day between 6-8 server time. This is outdated or false information. I have personally saw the escort even start at 4:10 p.m. server time.

There is also a post that claims the escort event starts every 2hr 20min - 3hr 30min listed in these comments. This is also false information. I have personally been waiting here for 4 hours and haven't seen the event start. I would guess it only goes out twice a day as the NPC specifically states.

Update: Waited it out and finally completed this escort quest. Guard Didier and the 5 mules spawned near Dispatch Commander Metz at LHC. He said something in /say and immediately took off. Mobs attack the 5 mules, never Guard Didier. The mules that spawn are called Caravan Mules and have 4-5k HP, not the Pack Mules you see at LHC with only 40-60 HP. You can heal the mules. Any level 80 will have NP keeping all the mules alive. Field Marshal Chambers still takes about 5 minutes to spawn after you finish the escort. Completing the quest doesn't count toward Loremaster, The Seeker, and even doesn't count toward your total quests completed on your achievement statistics page.

Guard Didier was like everywhere else, bugged on my server last week (Just idle at LHC), so I decided to camp him after maintenance this week

Servers came up ~11:00 and I started camping. He spawned at LHC (NOT at the oozes) @ 12:41 - He then started moving towards his destination at the camp. It took ~10 minutes to escort him + his 5 his Carawan Mules there. I could then pick up the quest. After that I had to wait another 10 minutes for Chambers to arrive on his mount from the north. I made him sign the Safe Passage and handed in the quest at LHC.

I completed this quest today as the only remaining I had left to do to clear out the Eastern Plaguelands.

When I arrived at Light's Hope Chapel Guard Didier had already spawned but was stationary with his mules. After reading about the bug here I ticketed a GM who kindly reset the NPCs for me after I explained about the problem.

I tried to get him to tell me how long it would be before he spawned again but he was ever the professional GM and just said "hopefully soon". Not having anything else to do that evening I watched some TV while camping the spot.

Approximately four hours later (00:35am server time) he spawned and from then on it was a pretty hassle free experience to completion.

If like me you're intent on doing this quest, all I can say is be patient and be prepared to wait. Also if Guard Didier is bugged, don't hesitate to contact you friendly neighbourhood GM to reset him!

I've happened by Light's Hope several times right about when the last couple mules were swarmed by slimes and undead, and tonight I was literally in the right place at the right time, and passed him just as he'd appeared. It was sometime after 1am server time on Sisters of Elune-NA, probably 1:10am.

After fighting off the bazillion slimes, several bats, and half of Browman Mill, I was curious to see what was up with this caravan. I'd also just discovered his destination earlier in the evening, so when I saw him hit the riverbed, I guessed he was headed for the Argent camp by Blackwood Lake. I followed, and as an 80 hunter it was cake to keep the mobs off of him -- I'd run into the Scarlet patrol earlier in Corin's Crossing (and ganked them as payback), so I don't know if that might have changed their patrol schedule, or if I just lucked out with not meeting them.

Pity that it doesn't count for much or give experience, but it was still a neat quest to discover. At the time my Orc was Revered with AD, but I don't know if there could be a rep requirement; my guess is, anyone 55+ who finds them at that camp can get the writ and wait for Chambers to appear, since this isn't actually an escort quest and Didier doesn't "know" who actually protected him. The quest itself comes from him after he arrives at the camp.

As of Patch 4.0.1 (I cannot confirm that it was changed in 4.0.1, just, that is when I did the quest), you no longer have to wait for Field Marshal Chambers to sign the writ. You receive the writ when you get the quest. I waited for him to show up, but did not do anything else. The NPC dialogue just stated "Sir, Yes Sir" and that was it.
