I had the most luck with the regular Wavethrashers up around The Tower of Eldara (86, 25 or so). Took about 30 minutes at lvl 51.

Elite sharks tend to roam around that area, for a wandering 51 hunter, it can be dangerous!

I found a large concentration of Wavethrashers in the bay north of the Temple of Arkkoran (a named landmark on the regular map). Again, just as with the coursers, focus on the higher level beasts to greatly improve the drop rate of the Wavethrasher Scales.

If you click on the underlined "Wavethrasher Scales" above in the quest text it shows the drop rate to be better for the lower level Wavethrashers, including the Young Wavethrashers. I had equal luck it seemed with all the mobs I killed. Much better drop rate then the antlers for me.

Don't bother with trying the Young Wavethrashers. There are way too few spawns to make them worthwild to hunt for the scales. The first post about heading towards the Tower of Eldara and farming the Wavethrashers there is a good choice. They spawn on the beach and sometimes just off shore. There is easily enough to get your scales in under 30 minutes. The only bad part about this area is the sheer number of roaming Murlocs and Makrura in the area. At 51 you might have some issues without being careful, so take caution while fighting.

I had good luck around 88,34 ... but it's out in the boonies. You won't be able to eat and drink very often out there at sea, so I'd only recommend that area if you're lvl 54 or above. That said, there were a good number of the wavethrashers around compared to other areas. There are a decent number on land north of there as well.

I will go back to some of the coords stated here and try. I did this tonight, level 56 Night Elf Hunter w/pet same level ... I started counting on paper with the little tic-marks 1-2-3-4-5, 1-2-3-4-5, etc ... I killed 32 Wavethrashers ... took FOREVER to even find them ... was about to abandon the quest ... and got ONE SCALE on the 32nd kill!!! That is just BS!! I was going to petition the quest as broken or at least a total waste of time. BAH!! What a joke. If I didn't REALLY want that charm ...another hunter in the area told me she had gotten 4 in 25 kills ... so her odds were a lot better than mine :(

I found maybe 30 in like an hour and a half from those 30(it was the young ones i was after)i had 2 scales. So don't look for the young ones cos they really don't spawn often enough to be worth the annoyance of swimming around for that period of time

Kill the regular Wavethrashers, i got 6 in 9 kills total just ran along the shore line (had Beast Tracking on) and took about 15 minutes traveling and all (found like 3 or 4 close to the tower)

the best place to find them is between the tower of eldarath and the temple of arrankoa.they are at the beach and at the water also

I killed a total of 9 to get all 6, a mix between the Wavethrashers and Young Wavethrashers. In my experience, the type of wavethrasher didn't affect the drop rate.

the drop rate on these are so low. plus, it was hard to find an abundance of them. i made one trip from the top of the coast of Azshara to the bottom and got them all.

I recommend route between tower at (89,33) and (82,11). Wavethrashers are usualy on the coast, while the Young Wavethrashers are usualy in the water. For me, youngs had better drop rate, so consider http://www.wowhead.com/?item=9452 or http://www.wowhead.com/?item=5996 or simply skip them

If this helps any one I went in too the ocean at 57,8 and under the noggenfogger potion the (skeletal) form and hunted the wave thrashers with no outside mob influences and they all dropped with in 15min for me hope this helps lvl 52 hunter

Took me 54mins to complete as a 50 BM Hunter. This was without water breathing potions. Quite a long quest.

Sharks, murlocs, those lobster dudes, and giants are trying to see me dead! I can barely find any Wavethrashers by the Temple of Arkkoran. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong spots but, seriously, its getting tough.

Young Wavethrashers seemed to drop the scales more often. got all 6 in under 30 mins.

After doing the coursers, the droprate didnt seem so bad. However, less mobs to kill and very spread out, in water nonetheless.

Took me about 40 minutes as a 50 BM hunter. The mobs are pretty easy to kill even being 53 and all, your pet should have the new rank of Growl and be 50 from killing the hundreds of coursers in the previous part of course. =P

Make a targeting macro it'll help you find them, even outside the tracking zone.

I've killed about a million of the regular thrashers and get 4/6 scales.
Drop rate seems horrible.

Oh and btw, the tower zone (88,34) is fine even at level 50, I'm only 50 and nothings even been close to killing me yet.

I found a lot of them from 87, 15 and onwards and also had the drop rate improve after I got 2.

Spent over an hour swimming up and down the coast dodging raging murlocs & elite giants only to kill 16 Wavethrashers and have 3 scales drop. Had to take a break, i'll update when i'm done. The only good thing is I've got lots of thick & rugged leather from this chain quest, call it a perk if you will, i won't. On a side note, i've gone through roughly 800 arrows, so make sure your quiver / ammo pouch is full before embarking on this journey.

Great Wavethrashers are the way to go .. I found lots of them at the southern end of Azshara on the Bay of Storms side around 70,75 and on around to 50,92.

Looks like Blizzard lowered the drop rate. I've been clearing the area around Tower of Eldara twice so far and only got 1 scale.

I'm starting to think the trinket is not worth the amount of time spending on doing this quest.

P.S: I dropped the quest. 1 scale after an hour of farming is just simply ridiculous.

Took about 45 minutes from start to delivery of this quest tonight for my lvl 50 toon.

What I did was head straight north and jump down at about 41,16, then swim/run along the coast towards 87,23. Naturally, you should track beasts and kill any wavetrashers you spot.

By the point I reached 87,23 I got the last drop and could ride back.

I started up on the northern-most shore killing the young ones, there I got one scale in roughly 15 mins...
I swam around the coast looking for more, in 5 mins of swimming...
Moved down the the Temple of Arkkoran and killed the normal Wavethrashers, I got one scale in about 10 mins...
Swam down to the Southridge Beach (took about 10-15 mins) and got my last four scales in four Greater kills

Got my first scale at my 8th kill, near the Tower of Eldara.
They are easy to kill but I really honestly believe that these incredibly low drop rates is something that Blizzard should review!

Took me about 1 hour and 50 minutes and 28 kills to get all the scales... :(

The boring part is the moving back and forth looking for these dudes and waiting for respawns...

I've done this quest on 3 hunter, and it feels more painful every time I do it. Bad spawn rates, Bad spawn locations, slow travel time due to the water, Bad drop rates. each time I've done it I've taken over an hour.

-Killing young ones: bad drop rates
-Killing normal ones: bad rates bad spawns
-Kiling the greater ones: lots of high levels "trash", questionable drop rates.

Quest needs a buff, either 100% drop or better spawns for the mobs.

Rewards are questionable in terms of effort to reward, they're gonna be replace in outlands very quickly.

Get a few elixirs of water walking http://www.wowhead.com/?item=8827, put on Aspect of the Cheetah and just run to the north-east part over water where most Wavethrashers are.

Doing this I avoided all major aggro issues when walking over land, plus I killed some thrashers underway. Just be careful of the elite giants and some other mobs, but they can be avoided easily.

Mobs are pretty uncommon, but at least the drop rate is good. I killed 9 regular (and 1 young) wave thrashers to get my 6 scales.

Blizzard really needs to rethink this quest. Wether its upping the amount of quest mobs, or letting them roam on land, something needs to be done. Swimming up and down a coast in water for 2 hours made me almost delete my hunter. This quest is complete garbage.

This quest is almost not even worth the XP. I got scales on my first 3 guys then killed 12 in a row without anything so I'm guessing it was luck. This quest needs more wavethrashers also, like everyone is saying, swimming and swimming and swimming for an hour is pointless. If you have good patients then go for it, but if you can spare the XP I say skip this quest.

when swimming out in the water beware of the elite sharks roaming around. they can kill you in about 3-4 hits. I had to try and attack one just for the fun of it on my hunter, bad idea with the GY run.

I roamed around a lot, however, I found a group of them around the 52, 5.1 area which was approximately 400 yards to the north of where the quest stated they were at. I killed approximately 12-15 of them before getting all 6.

this quest is horrible the monsters them selves are hard to find and the drop rate is low but good luck :)

try looking at the chords from the other comments some of them have a lot of th wave thrahers

The biggest problem isn't even mentioned by anyone: HOW DO YOU GET TO THE WATER?

I first came to Azshara and wanted to hunt lobster for my cooking skill. I wandered the entire coast and couldn't find a way down. Now I have a quest down there?

Everywhere I look is cliff. Someone please describe where a path is.

I had a lot of luck with Young Wavecrashers at about 57,10 to 62,10, where the mountains are. The drop rate was almost 100%, and there were no other mobs around. only took me 8 kills :)

it was also really easy to find them with track beasts since the other mobs were humanoids or yellow

This quest took FOREVER to finish! So only do it if u have plenty of patience.
its not really hard just very time consuming. just avoid the elite giants and youll be fine =)

peice of advice. there are alot by the tower of elrada! just mind the murlocs and ull be done pretty fast ^_^ hope that helps

Took 55 minutes to gather the scales. I was competing with two other hunters. The drop rate is not higher and Azshara, despite being a beautiful zone, is still one of the worst zones to do anything in.

The devialsaur eye is a great trinket but maybe not 100% worth it.

Took me about 20 mins to complete. Drop rate on the scales suck. If you go out to the Northeast tip at Jagged Reef they are all over the beach there.

Don't bother doing this quest. It takes upwards of half an hour, drop on quest item isn't even 100% and rewards are weak.

I recommend starting at the southeast portion of the map and moving your way back west along the coastline at the bottom of the area. If you are using Blizz' new quest tracker on their map (I was) the areas that they highlight give you an extremely small area to look in. Use these as a rough guideline, but go further out into the open water - that's where the threshers are. Make sure your tracking is on and the drops should come quickly enough.

Took me about 20 minutes looking around for a way 'up' from the jagged reef from where these guys are found until I finally gave up and hearthed.
Talk about a stupid design! At least make a couple ways up to the regular elevation so players don't get stuck!
Azshara sucks, just throwing it out there.

I will never do another Sunken Temple class specific quest again!

ST becomes available at level 45 but the quest (chain) does not start until 50.
Then you have to travel forever, through heavy high level mobs and elites, to find minimal spawn mobs that have a VERY low drop rate!
And at the end of this GRUELING chain of quests is a reward that is not any better than what you can buy in the auction house for 20 Gold.

Never again.
