This quest is actually part of a really long line. It's totally worth it from a lore perspective. :)

From an Alliance point-of-view, it starts with the Into Hostile Territory chain, which opens up the An End And A Beginning chain. After completing On Ruby Wings, Alexstrasza the Life-Binder sends you to speak with Highlord Bolvar Fordragon at Fordragon Hold.

Alliance chain is as follows:

Part One
1) Into Hostile Territory - report to Report to Duke August Foehammer at Thorson's Post.
2) Steamtank Surprise - destroy 6 plaguewagons and drop the 7th Legion Elite at the Wintergarde Mausoleum.
3) Scattered To The Wind - pick up 8 Wintergarde Munitions
4) The Chain Gun And You - rescue 8 injured 7th Legion soldiers
5) Plunderbeard Must Be Found - find the gnome Plunderbeard in the Mausoleum.
6) Plunderbeard's Journal - find the missing four pages of Plunderbeard's journal
7) Chasing Icestorm: The 7th Legion Front - report to Legion Commander Tyralion at the 7th Legion Front
8) Chasing Icestorm: Thel'zan's Phylactery - retrieve Thel'zan's Phylactery from the frost wyrm Icestorm
9) Finality - take Thel'zan's Phylactery to Legion Commander Yorik

Part Two
1) And End And A Beginning - defeat Thel'zan the Duskbringer
2) To Forgragon Hold! - speak to Highlord Bolvar Fordragon at Fordragon Hold
3) Audience With The Dragon Queen - speak to Alexstrasza the Life-Binder at Wrymrest Temple
4) Galakrond and the Scourge - Speak with Torastrasza at Wrymrest Temple
5) On Ruby Wings - kill 30 Wastes Scavenger and retrieve the Scythe of Antiok

Part Three
1) Return To Angrathar - speak to Highlord Bolvar Fordragon again. Epic cinematic to follow

Part Four
1) Reborn From The Ashes - talk to King Varian Wrynn in Stormwind City
2) Fate, Up Against Your Will - speak to the Warchief of the Horde, Thrall
3) A Royal Coup return to King Wrynn
4) The Killing Time - report to Broll Bearmantle
5) The Battle For The Undercity

There are a few quests you need to do before the first step in Part One but some of them are just bread crumb quests to let you know where to go. Hope this helps.

For all mages out there, when you see the dragon down on the battlefield with the quest exclamation mark above her head, RESIST the urge to jump down and cast Slow Fall... because it won't work! Alexstrasza has a Serenity aura active which PREVENTS all hostile actions, and that means no spellcasting whatsoever in her presence.

So if you jump, you'll have a brutal reunion with the law of gravity.

How long does it take for the jacka$$ king to respawn? horde just killed him as soon as i go to turn it in. epic fail! :(

Just pray upon entering the Keep in Stormwind that you don't see about 100 corpses lying in the hallway... good chance the king won't be there due to a horde raid for Achievements. King has an extremely long respawn time, been waiting over an hour now.

I am having a problem completing this quest, and am wondering if anyone else had the same/similar issue. I took the portal to undercity and completed The Killing Time. I picked up the quest The Battle for the Undercity. Prior to starting the event I logged off. When I logged back in, the quest NPCs weren't around. I waited for a while and they didn't comeback/respawn. I abandoned the quest, and was able to pick it back up. But was still not able to start the event. I abandoned the quest again, hearthed and made my way back to SW keep to start the process again, but I can't get through the portal anymore.
Any thoughts, suggestions?

You may have to wait quite a while for the King to show up (I did). He may be off raiding the Horde city apparently.

EDIT: Oh, duh. Horde seems to have killed him on my server. Boo.

After you get the shield and Get to Stormwind, If the King is dead from the raids for the Achievements, Its VERY Anoying to wait for him, At this very moment, I am Waiting, I did a couple of Arena Fights, Won em, And still Waiting, Just a Word of Advice not to get your hopes up when you get this quest.

When she says "All is not lost. From the ashes of the fallen will rise a force that will unite nations and purge the evil from this world." in the quest text, makes me wonder if infact she is referring to Bolvar. If he were return i'm sure he'd make Varian see past his hatred for the horde and see the bigger picture, the threat of the Lich King. The only reason the red mist decended on Varian was because of Bolvar's death. Bolvar will return and will be more badass then he was before

Fun fact:

If you miss out on picking up the shield like I did, and just go on your merry way questing in Dragonblight, when you try to visit Undercity or Orgrimmar you'll get a nasty surprise, where the entire city is empty of players and has unattackable guards, plus a non-functioning portal to Stormwind. As I type this I'm flying back to do the questline and fix the problem.

The Shield is basically right below the dragon. And of course, you have to take it to the king which is in Stormwind.

If you are unable to see any NPC or fellow players in Orgrimmar and Undercity. Then this chain quest is the problem. Restart te quest and complete it and you will be able to raid them again.

If you are in a raid for (http://www.wowhead.com/?achievement=614) you will not be able to see your raid. However if you stay in the boss room while your raid is completing the boss you will still get the kill.

IF the quest hangs and disconnected in UC and you abandoned it WHERE do you find the NPC to resume it after having abandoned it in frustration.

We are having the same problem. Got the achievement so we are sure to have completed Return to Angrathar, but Alextrazsa the binder does not have the followup quest. Thought maybe we are on the next quest, that you get from the SW king, but no he does not have on either. So we are phased at this time, but can't figure out what part of the quest since none of the questgivers have anything good to say.

If you have CWF or the dalaran FP you can get the FP from fordragon hold and then fly to dala from there then take the portal to stormwind.

After seeing the Wrathgate cinematic I quickly mounted and headed down to Alexstrasza, and when I reached her I interrupted a conversation she was having:

Alexstrasza the Life-Binder says: No, my beloved.
Alexstrasza the Life-Binder says: Ashj zila gul kirasath lok ante il lok buras danashj Gul gul
Korialstrasz nods.
Korialstrasz says: They will not.
Alexstrasza the Life-Binder whispers: Come to me, Rayyde.

Can anyone tell me what I missed before I got there? I'm curious.

The shield seems to not exist anymore...I did the quest series today and the ground is different from the screenshot previously posted. I cannot find the shield to save my life ^_^

EDIT: Apparently there's was a phasing error where the enemy undead didn't despawn. The shileld was under a huge abomination ^_^

Just did the quest, about to do the Undercity assault now.

With the cataclysm events, the alliance leaders and Jaina are gathered in SW keep to discuss the events - with Jaina popping up additionally for the quest, it makes two Jainas in SW keep within 10 yards of each other.
Just for the record, the cataclysm-Jaina can't be interacted with in regards to this questline.

2 x Jainas in the same room made me giggle :)

FWIW: This is no longer obtainable since The Shattering. The Wrathgate chain ends after the cinematic.

While it is possible to get the Veteran of the WrathGate achievement, the quests following the achievement have been removed. I do not understand why blizzard enjoys breaking story lines. A real shame for those that have not been able to experience this phased quest chain.

Please for the love of all that is holy put this quest chain back into the game with the next patch. I never got to do this alliance side so when I was on my worgen I was continually trying to figure out why it wouldn't let me go any further. This is one of the best quest chains that blizzard has put out in it's time and shouldn't be taken away simply because of the shattering.

Thrall is still running around all over the places beeing the warchief, just hang around the argent tournament a little and he will show up...
They removed the whole because it seems to be a pain for them to redo the whole og/sw phasing i guess.

Still makes no sense to remove it as this was supossed to of happend before cataclysm? despite what thrall and jaina are doing now, at the time of that quest line they where helping to fight the scourge? They still could of used the old UC and Orgrimmar models for the quest because after all they would only be like instances. I mean they even re-created Stratholme for WOTLK?

Wow. This bites. They killed off a favorite part of mine in this game.
Seriously, not being sarcastic. I actually thought the quest was broken since Alexstrasza wasn't giving me it.

Then I come here and find out it's gone. Why? Why even lead up to it then cut it off? Lich King is supposed to be dead anyway (just like Malygos).
