Part of the Horde questline for the Wrath Gate event. This quest line is very long and spans the entire length of Dragonblight. Quite honestly, I consider this one of the most important quest lines (thus far) in Wrath. A must-do for any hordeling. :)

In quite a few of these chains there are optional prequests. I will not list these, despite them being in the quest series list, because they are just that: Optional. I will list the LATEST quest available that will start the chain, or the one most likely to pick up while completing other parts of this chain.

Additionally, these quests are Horde Only. I, unfortunately, do not have an Alliance character on the Beta, so I do not have access to any alliance quests. Sorry!

Step names are purely flavor. They generalize what that part of the chain leads up to/is about.

I highly urge everyone to read the quest text. This quest line is quite possibly one of the most epic in Warcraft history and is highly worth the time. Lore lovers and haters alike should enjoy them.

One interesting thing to note is what Alexstrasza says after.

Korialstrasz says: My Queen, do they know?
Alexstrasza the Life-Binder says: No, my beloved.
Alexstrasza the Life-Binder says: Ashj zila gul kirasath lok ante il lok buras danashj Gul gul
Korialstrasz nods.
Korialstrasz says: They will not.
Alexstrasza whispers: Come to me, <name>.

In Draconic "Ashj zila gul kirasath lok ante il lok buras danashj Gul gul" means "They must not discover the fate of the young paladin. Not yet." when run through the in-game translator. Implying that Bolvar may have survived...one way or another.

After getting to this point in the chain, all the horde & alliance soldiers in the area are running around fleeing in terror.

Except the flight master. He still greets you with a cheery "Zug Zug".

I strongly suspect flightmasters are distantly related to Saurfang.

Hey, did anyone else notice when your talking to Thrall, that Sylvanas has 3X more hp then Thrall, but during the siege, Thrall has 3X more hp then Sylvanas.

Every time I do the Wrathgate chain, I almost feel like crying. The whole thing is just that powerful for me. It's not even helped much by the fact that the Horde side only lost Saurfang junior, as opposed to the High Overlord himself.

I still need to get my Alliance alt out of Outland and into Northrend to see the other side of things.

First off, before you go to the quest dialog page he says:

Fear has always been our greatest weapon. Entire wars have been won and lost upon the shifting shoulders of trepidation and doubt. So how, then, does one fight an enemy that knows no fear?

<Saurfang shakes his head.>

We do not just fight the Scourge in Northrend, we fight to gain control of our senses before they tear us apart...

Once you hit the quest to hand it in and you show him the armour:

<Saurfang's face contorts.>

My heart... my strength...

Hit continue and:

<Saurfang looks to the heavens.>

Like Brox, my son died a hero. Do not mourn him, {your name}. For an orc, there could be no better end! No greater honor! At this moment, my heart swells with pride.

While on this quest, I wandered to UC to see if the city had already been taken over. It had not, and the city is safe to enter while on this quest.

Interesting to note, however, that it seems to have been phased to the post-battle UC, with Kor'kron guards instead of abominations. A check of the Royal Quarter shows, indeed, Varimathras is absent and Sylvanas is accompanied by Bragor Bloodfist.

After turning in Darkness Stirs and picking up Herald of War, however, Undercity is under attack, so port yourself to the city at your own peril.

This quest and its Alliance counterpart have been removed as of patch 4.0.3a (The Shattering). As Thrall is no longer the Warchief, he won't be leading the charge to recapture the Undercity. The quest chain now ends with Return to Angrathar and the achievement.

I believe this quest was taken out of the game in the most recent patch. Just finished the quest line up until the cinematic. I received the achievement. Now Alexstrasza offers to replay the video, but no follow up quests.

I just finished the cutscene and Alexstraza tell me to talk to her, but does not offer this quest. Anyone else have this issue? Put in a ticket and there is an apparent long line :/

Just a heads up: this quest is no longer available as of 4.0.3. Apparently it was a "Wrath only event" and you will only get up to Alexstrasza and Kol talking and Alex telling you to come to her.

What was Blizz thinking when they dumped the quest-chain after the cinematic?

Retaking UC was an excellent way to follow such an epic event in the game, not to mention a great milestone in the leveling process. I always looked forward to this part of Dragonblight questing, not to mention the Exp that goes with it all.

I just don't understand why they had to remove this chain. It was SO epic.

Even in Nagrand Thrall comes back from nowhere to show how epic was the Mag'har chain line, I don't understand why here couldn't work similar.

yeah wtf... They kept everything in the Mag'har chain in Nagrand... Garrosh is in 3 different places... soo lame :( I just finished this quest and now I don't get to experience this. DUMB

Very stupid that this was removed. I never saw it from the Horde perspective and now I wont get the chance. As others have said, Garrosh is in 3 other places, and hell even Bliz has said that the expansions are in their own timeline. Very short sighted.

I must say, as someone who never experienced this questline until recently, I was rather confused when the cinematic ended with a phasing of the Wrath Gate, Alexstrasza sitting there looking like I need to talk to her, but would only replay the cinematic when I addressed her.

It wasn't until I did some investigating to find out what I was supposed to do next that I realized that segment of WoW lore was taken out. I'm glad for those who inserted the original quest's text so that I could find out what was supposed to happen.

It was extremely perplexing for the storyline to just end there, no taking the honored armor back to the elder Saurfang and reporting his son is dead, which is what I thought I was going to do but never did. I am sad now, but life goes on.

Long live Saurfang.

hmmm. just finished the quest chain... and the only thing you'll get is a "dialog" from the two dragons and a "whisper" witch says come to me.......... and nothing further not even a quest just the damn cinematic over and over. The armor kit and shield lies below the dragon queen but nothing else... but thats the new way of blizz destroying quests just to make it easier for some players.....

hmmm er lige blevet færdig med kædequesten.... og det eneste man får er en "samtale" mellem to drager og et "hvisk" kom her over......... og intet udover en skide film som man kan se igen og igen osv. rustningen og skjoldet er der stadig, men man kan ikke smale det op selv om det ligger lige under dragernes dronning....... men det er den nye vej frem for blizz, ødelægger quests bare for at gøre det nemmere for andre spillere.....

men det er bare min menning og sure opstød

This quest line now ends after the cinematic. I just finished the previous quest and am a bit sad that I'll never get to experience these epic quests because I waited until after Cata to return to WoW.

After incinerating the battlefield, Alexstrasza still asks you to approach her as if she has something to say, even if the quest has already been removed by Blizzard. An oversight maybe.

This is really unbelievable. Blizz just removed the second half to a very important event in the lore. One of the races of the Horde appears to have betrayed their own faction, and there's just no resolution to it. No one says a word... I guess the Horde is okay having their own soldiers killed by the Forsaken. Nothing worth getting upset about, I guess.

I guess in the new retconned timeline, Putress never took Undercity, Sylvanas never barely escaped with her "life," and the Alliance and Horde never entered Undercity to retake it.

So the Horde (as far as the player knows) never found out that Putress had betrayed Sylvanas and that this attack at the wrath gate was not ordered by her (at least that was what she said before). A major betrayal within the Horde, and... it is ignored.

I can only guess why the geniuses at Blizz took this out. Some said it was too hard... maybe the same reason they neutered so many elite quests, because they think there won't be enough people playing in the zone to get the group-oriented ones done.

I did the retaking UC one solo (aside from the npc team of course) several times. It's not a problem. If that was the reason they removed the rest of the series, it's pretty pathetic... to remove the entire resolution to an epic conflict like this and to leave it hanging should at least have a reasonable explanation (not that leaving the story hanging is ever a good idea).

If it is because Thrall is no longer warchief... well, he was at the time of the Wrath Gate event. That would not even be in question if Blizz had not horked the timeline with Cata. It used to be that the old 1-60 world was in the pre-BC time as it was originally written, Outland was of course BC, Northrend was of course WOTLK... so as you leveled from vanilla to BC to WOTLK, you experienced the timeline roughly as the events would have happened, in order.

But when the new WOW devs decided to mark their territory by messing up the old world (which they had no emotional connection with), they made it so 1-60 was mostly cata, then you (without explanation) went back in time to fight the Legion, then Arthas, then rejoined the present again with Cata. Utterly stupid move.

So if they removed the retaking UC event because of that... again, really stupid on their part. The entire fight against Arthas took place before cata, so why would they be concerned that having Thrall as warchief would be an anachronism?

They should've left this one intact. We already see Dranosh die. What's wrong with delivering his armor to Agmar's Hammer ? They could keep the entire event anyway. You know there's the OUTLAND issue if they were trying to keep the story updated. If you don't fix outland, don't try to fix anything else.

I only ever got to this point in Dragonblight a few days ago, after questing in Northrend to get the Loremaster Achievement.

I took a break from WOW some years ago and wasn't present during Wrath.

After seeing the cinematic with Putress and all that, I was REALLY bummed when I found out about this whole questline. :(

Tell me then, Blizz, why is Rhonin still in Dalaran (as of MoP), as the Head of The Kirin Tor, since we all know he died In Theramore while saving Jaina? Northrend Is Northrend, If the quest might have bugged out somewhat Undercity in the Eastern Kingdoms, why not transfer it then to the Caverns OF Time then or something like that?

After having a break from WoW (left just before Pandaria, came back 2 weeks before Legion) and there being so many changes to the game I started new toons.
Got to questing in Northrend, loved Wrath so much the first time around. I have been disheartened so many times that some great quests have been cut from the game inc this one.
