the location is easy, as you travel towards Felwood, look to the left, there are some broken columns close to a path leading to a cave. just below the cave is a Crazed Ancient guarding a chest next to a errected column. open the chest to get the staff. he also dropped the wooden key for me

I got the key, opened the chest (as a 26 priest - and died as soon as I walked into Felwood). Then I ran back to Ashenvale and killed another treant - and got another key. Odd.

i managed to do this at lvl 25 shaman. pretty easy if you know what you're doing. which before i tried doing this i didnt. drop the right totems and you should be fine, trust me this coming from someone who has no confidence whatsoever!!
for me it was the strentgh of earth totem, the healing stream totem and the searing totem, and get ready to kick butt!

The key you pick up (wooden key)..
When i looked it up on WoWhead it said it was for a chest in the ghostlands...it's not, it's in ashenvale on 54,35

I found the fastest way to locate the area needed was to travel from Raynewood Retreat along the road to Felwood. After you pass the last "street" light of Ashenvale. Just a short distance on the left of the road. after that it is easy to do.

I noticed that when Shael'dryn casts the "spell" to fix the rod together after this quest, she actually casts the mage spell Conjure Food. It appears in the combat log. So that means fixing the rod together isn't magical, it's just hard work putting it together that she needs food to keep her going. :)

Ok, so the majority of the comments give coordinates, but if you're like me, you don't know what any of it means. So here is the close to exact (if not exact) guide to finding the wooden key and chest/box.

1st of all, try to be a level 27 if you are going to handle the ancients (who have the key) because sometimes there will be 2 or 3 of them on you at once..

2nd to find the ancients, follow the path that leads to felwood but don't enter felwood. The path towards felwood is a main path on your map that splits north of the main path ( the path toward felwood is located east on your map from Shael'dryn at the moonwell). And it too has moonlight lanterns on it.You know that you are about to enter felwood when you see moonlight lanterns that are green instead of blue. I warn against entering felwood because the beasts are all unknown and will kill you soon upon entering felwood... Either way, right before the green lanterns, to your left from the path maybe 200- 400 ft. from felwood, there will be ancients guarding the box, and they are roaming around near tucked away broken pillars. Kill all the ancients in that spot and retrieve the wooden key from one of them.

3rd there are 3 pillars that are glowing pedestals in a row inside the half circle of broken pillars. one of them has the chest/box casually set on the top of one of them. Right click on the box to open it.

4th and final the iron shaft should appear and you simply take it by clicking on the Iron Shaft that appears.

5th take the moonlit path back to the main moonlit path (go right) and take the moonlit path back to the hidden path back to the person who gave you this quest >(Shael'dryn at the moonwell).

Ok? X) Good luck... I hope you spend less time on this quest than I have and find this little quest guide helpful. X)

P.S. I would recommend referring to the post by {Raruthga} (that is the 5th post up from mine) if you are confused in anyway about finding the felwood path in my little guide in the second rule there.^ Ok, that should be everything. ^.^

P.S.S. The screen shots for this quest are also helpful, especially the second one with the little arrow cursor on the map that is in the brown area.. X) That's how I began to figure it out. X)

Most of these are good, but i would like to add my two cents in, seeing as everyone is complaining about how hard it is. I just did this solo as a 22 resto druid, and with a 1500+ lat. This is quite doable at this lvl, it's just about being smart about your strategy. Try to pull only one mob at a time, run like hell if you get more than. and yes, mounts are a good thing to have going in, seeing as you can now get them at lvl 20. If nothing else, you should be going in with rested exp, and be able to get about 350 exp per mob. if you're a skinner, take advantage of the wolves around.

And if you're going to go into felwood for the fp (it is highly recommended, save travel time later), mount up, and ride like the wind, don't stop until you're safely into the Sanctuary. Wait a bit for the mobs to run back, then ride back to the quest giver, as flying out takes more time in the (too) long run.

Um, hi, yes? Someone should specify that since it's a level 27 quest, you actually should be about level 27, the treants are 26-28 in level and yeah, since I was a level 22 doing this quest, I was sure lucky my level 80 prot pally boyfriend showed up to take care of business. Just sayin'.

The chest is now located at 55.0, 40.6. It is sitting on a bench through a small "tunnel" that looks like stone ruins.

Raene is correct, I know about Dartol's creation and the treants in the area--at least I did once. They've become corrupted now, their nature twisted.

To find the next piece of the rod, you'll have to find the key to open the chest it's in.

The wooden key is on one of the treants northeast of here near the Felwood border, at the Howling Vale. Once you have it, look for a small glade through the tunnel at the vale. The chest should be hidden around there.
