Just tamed a green one today in Isle of Giants. To be able to tame one, you need to kill humanoids there which have a small chance of dropping an item called Antico Tomo della Dinomanzia.

Currently the Direhorns special ability only deflects spells cast on the Direhorn itself, meaning hiding behind your new dino-friend will not save you from that Dardo del Caos heading your way. Will edit if this changes.

I dunno if this is a normal pet thing or not... my hunter doesn't get played much. I went and got one of the red direhorns, and discovered that it's smart enough to get out from in front of something like a klaxxi rare's ginsu attack before it starts. Nice.

They appear to be freeze-trap immune, but if you have Glifo Carbonizzato then it is really easy to tame anyway; no special tricks needed.

Note that Deflect is not same as Reflect (back).

Deflect:

(Google) Cause (something) to change direction by interposing something; turn aside from a straight course.
(Thesaurus) bounce off; turn aside

I play a Shadow Priest typically but my husband is a hunter and he wanted one of these as a pet so I came along to help. He had to beat it down a bit before it was tameable and for this, I went into holy spec. I had to heal his current pet repeatedly while he was beating it down. Once it was at about 25%, he dismissed his pet, tamed the dino, and that was that. So, for an easier time, it's not necessary for everyone, but it'd be easier on anyone heading towards this island to take a healer friend if you can. You'll have a better time.

Pet looks interesting but his spell reflect ability works ONLY against spells cast directly at the pet.

It is also a 6 second channeling ability, so your pet can not attack until a spell hits him or he does the 6 second channel.

It will sometimes make certain aoe spells not affect your pet, but this is very rarely.

Being a long time hunter, aside from looks - which are sweet - it doesn't appear that this pet is really any good. The spell deflect, would be nice if it deflected all spells in a certain radius, but since it's only those spells cast directly at it - it makes the pet ....very situational.

One question, does this one make the incredibly annoying stomping noise....it's cool at first, but when you are playing for awhile it can get...annoying...to say the least.

May not be the best tanking pets but since my hunter had hit 90, he has tamed one of the red ones and it has become his main pet ever since and never failed him when it came to tanking in dungeons or old raids :) It's really all about preference, I know turtles and beetles would be better but they ain't bad pets ya know.

I went to the isle with my hunter for the first time to try to get the last of the Zandalari battlepets, I had forgot about the tome that drops to tame one of these, I had helped a friend do that once before with an alt. So I grabbed one of these, no problem taming it at lvl 90, just dismissed pet and grabbed a hatchling. I don't even have the glyph and I barely took any damage. Very cute pet, it's ok for fighting, and bloody enormous on the login screen!

One thing odd no one has mentioned, does anyone else's do a strange motion where it looks like it has died? Sort of sways and falls over and slides on his side. Has thrown me a couple times when I have thought "Crap, my pet died, wait a minute, he's still at half health!" Doesn't seem to be related to a talent, buff or timing in fight, he's done it during and after. Hmmm, how did I get a pet that feigns death?

Why'd they not give this pet a buff for wod? In those terms it's 1 of the most useless pets.

They took away my poor trico's spell shield. I'm a sad hunter panda now. Used to be a nice six second heal but still hold aggro thing. Petopia is kind of vague on what it got in return, but it looks like either mortal wounds, or...nothing.

(Later edit) Yeah, mortal wounds. So very little heals in PVE that that's a total waste of an ability. Even the stuff that does try to heal generally dies before getting it off. And the little bit of extra health tenacity pets get with the 5% stamina family bonus doesn't keep up with the ferocity family's 10% leech healing. So poor Tongari, once my favorite pet, languishes in the stable...

Other pets clearly show their family ability - Swarm of Flies for toads, for example. But Direhorns don't have an ability button for the "gore" ability that Petopia says they should have. They have their Tenacity ability, but nothing for the Direhorn family skill.

If this is a bug, I hope they patch it soon. Right now my trusty direhorn buddy is the only pet in my stable with no family ability that I can find at all.

why must every item be such a low drop rate? 15 years on, and nothing has changed, but grinding is something i purely detest.
