Despite his being level 54, he is easily doable at 49 (the minimum level for his associated quest) for anyone capable of kiting. His only two special abilities both involve pain up close so as long as you keep your distance you can easily kill him. Soloed on a 49 Frost Mage.

Edit: Note that this comment was made pre-Cataclysm when Felwood was a level 50+ zone. The mob himself is now level 46 and the quest to kill him only requires level 44 to complete.

He is pretty much easy. I soloed him as a level 50 warrior, and had no problems. There is 1 mob around level 50 near him, and one by the pool so you better take the one by the pool first, and then kill the Xavathras.

The path to take to him is now blocked by a wall of flames. The quest Break The Unbreakable gives you a Claw of Tichondrius to dispel the flames.

I had no problem as a squishy level 47 mage and didn't get a scratch on me. The problem is that as soon as you defeat him, the claw will disappear from your quest tracking list leaving no way to drop the wall of flame to get out! Don't despair...it's still in your inventory and still works if you right-click it near the wall of fire. (This is assuming you're doing this quest at level, of course, and can't simply fly out.)
