I'm gonna express my point of view on congregations, purely from a bdk's perspective. I'm very hyped for shadowlands. Lots of returning utilities (lichborne, sacrificial pact, rune tap...). Bunch of new stuff (runes, covenants, legendaries...). It feels like the bdk are gonna get a bit of their old glory back, and i'm really excited to play mine after having ditched it during BfA. Blizzard said months ago, when the Alpha started, "wait and see". Well, to me it looks like they did a good job on my spec. Now on covenant abilities, at first i was really scared i'd be locked into Night Fae. Seriously, 15% strenght, 15% damage reduction, 10% mastery (soulbind) with 100% uptime ? And movement speed with blinks ? That felt tremendously better than the other choices. But i didnt go through death and damnation to help cute fairies build back their flower garden ! I wanted my bdk to be a proud commander of legions of ghouls, or at least a classy vampire. But as much as i wanted that, character power is my priority. If i would've risked being rejected by party leaders because i didn't have the one OP covenant, i'd have still bought a pair of gardening gloves and joined the fairies. But wait, and see. As the beta went on, soulbinds and conduits were added. That alone blurred a lot, to me, which covenant is gonna be the most optimised for me. The Kyrian one has a conduit that spreads Shackle the Unworthy to other targets (at a 500% rate per hit ? will be updated soon). And the venthyr, oh man, its got a fantastic conduit increasing the damages and the dodge chances of Swarming mist during its first 4s by 30% (at rank 15). That makes this ability a viable choice for bdk, and a good opener in m+ (i heard the bdk had issues with the first white hits without their bone shield charges.. here you go 40% dodge and 120RP !).And there's more, each soulbind, aside from conduits, provide different and (sometimes) useful traits. I recommend checking wowhead's soulbind calculator (https://shadowlands.wowhead.com/soulbind-calc/venthyr/general-draven/death-knight) for the complete list. And for example if you want three endurance conduit (you will... bdk's conduits are epic) that limits your choice to Draven / Kleia / Heirmir / Dreamwaver for their respective covenants. So Dreamwaver for example, her soulbind traits are not as good as Draven's. That balances. If you want to stay in Night fae but have more useful soulbind traits, then you'd pick Niya but she has only two endurance conduit slots. Choices have to be made, that balances fairly well the covenants between them. What about Kyrian ? Kleia can turn your bdk into a tier A heal. Almost. It gives more heals, extra health to your party members, and if you want to play that way you can pick Vampiric Aura from legendaries (party members get 50% of your vampiric blood effect) and the conduit that heals the whole party for 15% of the dk's max HP when you rune tap. I think all in all, now i feel more free to CHOOSE from Kyrian, Night Fae and Venthyr. From these three there won't be a big, clear gap of character power based on covenant class ability alone. The Necrolord, however, isn't suited for tanking. Sadly. But hey not all dk are tanks, and i get it that some will want the extra damage and grabs for PvP. I think i personnaly will go for Venthyr. Draven's three endurance conduit slots allow for the 15% heal on rune tap, 15% damage reduction during Lichborne, and the sweet dancing rune weapon one (which coupled with the legendary makes your rune weapon a very powerful tool - potentially changing the rotation of your gameplay. I like it !). Plus a teleportation at will. Neat. And hey, BLOOD dk should feel at home with the vampires. My point here is that it should be like this for every covenant, for every spec. Hard choices but not too much of a character power gap behind convenants. Having to choose from the one covenant you like and the one that will make your character perform better is BAD for the player experience. You will either feel underpowered, or not belonging to the covenant you picked. For a whole expansion. And i don't know if Blizzard can make that happen. It's a lot of work to take into consideration conduits, soulbind traits, covenant abilities, on every spec from every class (but hey they designed that system to begin with). That system works (now) for bdk, but i'm not sure that will be the case for everyone. Fatally some will end up in a disastisfying situation. But wait, and see. It might get fixed. At least i hope so, if not, the system they're proposing is flawed. If you made it this far, thanks for reading me, and see you in the Shadowlands. Suffer well !Edit : Blizzard's fun police must've read this because the last build on the beta nerfed everything. Putting 3 potency conduits on every soulbind not only ruined the night fae but also nerfed venthyr for the bdk. Kleia's traits got nerfed to the ground as well. The only viable option is now venthyr, although nerfed. Great, more clones incoming.
