Chapter 1: Into the Unknown
Once you log in for the first time in Patch 9.2, you will have the quest
, which requires you to go to the Enclave in Oribos and talk to Tal-Inara. They send you to the Arbiter's Chamber, where the Primus reveals they need a final Sigil to open the way to Zereth Mortis: The Arbiter's. With the Arbiter no longer active since the end of the Sanctum of Domination raid, Tal-Inara, Kah-Delen and Kah-Sher use their connection as the Arbiter's attendants and together, form the final sigil. The way to Zereth Mortis is then opened.
, we prepare to journey into Zereth Mortis, with Pelagos joining us as he wants to help us after all the player goes together with him in Bastion and Korthia. As we prepare to journey, the Mawsworn invade the Arbiter's Chamber! With the help of the Primus's powers, the Mawsworn invasion is stopped, but they managed to close the gate to Zereth Mortis right as you and Pelagos pass through it. Both of you arrive at Zereth Mortis, seemingly with no way out.
As you reconvene with Pelagos, both of you start exploring the nearby area in
. The gate leading deeper into Zereth Mortis is initially locked, but you and Pelagos figure out how to open it. Right within the gate, you meet with a strange-looking broker: Firim. Firim initially threatens us as he thinks we might be one of the agents of the jailer, but as we help him pack his strange Vombata mounts in
, he tells us about his history in Zereth Mortis. We then help Firim empower his Vombata in
, but end up angering some automa in the process.
Firim: I, of course, am Firim. Sure you have heard of my expedition to locate Zereth Mortis.
Pelagos: I fear not. But the brokers in Bastion do tell of an expedition that went missing long, long ago.
Firim: Missing? Hardly! I succeeded in finding this realm of knowledge and wonder. A place of tranquility... until the Mawsworn attacked.
Pelagos: I see no Mawsworn here. Where are they?
Firim: The Jailer's forces are spreading like a plague across Zereth Mortis. No doubt he seeks entrance to the Sepulcher.
Firim: The secrets of the cosmos lie within. Be wary! His agents could be anywhere...
Pelagos: What manner of constructs are these?
Firim: They are called automa. The caretakers of Zereth Mortis, left here by the First Ones.
Firim: If you can help me harness their might, perhaps I can find a way to use it against the Mawsworn.
With the automa in the area still mad at us, we help Firim further his research in
. After helping Firim with his stuff, he sends us to Haven in
. He does not enter Haven with us as he's estranged from his kin, but tells us a little more about Zereth Mortis on the ride there. However, we arrive too late: the Mawsworn are attacking Haven, being barely protected by broker shields.
As we enter Haven in
, we're predictably trapped by the brokers there. The Elders quickly question us, but relent once we offer our help with the defense of Haven, which we do in
After we turn in these quests, a placeholder cutscene plays, in which Zovaal shows up in Haven and tells the elders there he already has what he needs. The Jailer withdraw his forces from Haven, but scared of what he will do in Zereth Mortis, the Enlightened Elders want more allies to help in the defense of Zereth Mortis, and show you
. As the Maw Walker, we're able to attune this waystone to ourselves, opening a pathway to Zereth Mortis in Oribos - Located in the northern end of the Ring of Transference. Once we meet again with Bolvar in Oribos, he gathers our forces and move them to Zereth Mortis in
, and with this, Chapter 1 of the Campaign Storyline ends.
Elder Ara: The sacred words tells us that the First Ones placed waystones at crucial locations where they would one day be needed.
Elder Ara: The waystones would respond only to certain living mortals. The ones destined to save the realms of death. The Maw Walkers.
Elder Ara: If it is the will of the First Ones, this waystone will open to you, mortal.
Bolvar Fordragon: After your flight from the Arbiter's chamber, we defeated the nathrezim... but they had sabotaged the gateway.
Bolvar Fordragon: Once the stain of Maw magic had been cleansed, the Primus placed the gateway in this chamber.
Bolvar Fordragon: He trusted that you would find an anchor on the other side to reactivate it, giving us a path to Zereth Mortis.
Bolvar Fordragon: Now the true work begins... to save Anduin and to prevent the Jailer from remaking reality in his dark image.
Bolvar Fordragon: The Maw Walker has opened the way. Covenant forces, forward to Zereth Mortis!
Chapter 2: We Battle Onward
We're quickly thrown into action in Chapter 2, where we meet up with Shandris to scout the Forge of Afterlives in
. As we scout the forge area with her in
, it is surrounded with Mawsworn and Nathrezim forces, but Shandris notes the bulk of their forces don't seem to be around there. As we discover their plan of tampering with the surrounding obelisks to gain access to the forge, we return to Darion, the commander in the area, in
. We then dispatch of Mawsworn forces in the area in
As we defend the Forge, we hear noises coming from one of the obelisks that power them and in
, we learn that the Nathrezim are once again involved, this time disguising themselves as Ebon Blade. Upon learning of this, we're sent back to Haven to reconvene in
However, things are not going great in Haven - As you return to Bolvar, Elder Kreth, the leader of the Enlightened, mention that you're the reason their defense mechanisms are being tampered with according to their reports, and asks you to fix them in
. Bolvar gives you some specialized gear to help detect Dreadlords in
and asks you to give the Covenant commanders in the area in
, but they're equally unhappy with you, as you have allegedly given previous orders that led them straight into untamed wildlife! This is getting stranger by the minute.
The truth is finally uncovered in
- Of course, dreadlords are known to disguise themselves to confuse the enemy, but more specifically, one of them is disguising themselves as... you! And it would be none other than Mal'Ganis himself, who knew to exploit the Covenant's respect for you. As you start to lose the duel with Mal'Ganis, Baine and Jaina arrive to help you, which makes the dreadlord retreat.
Mal'Ganis: It was so simple to cause chaos. They follow you blindly.
Mal'Ganis: They would die for 'you' without knowing who you really are.
Mal'Ganis: You are simply a face and a name. The rest is inconsequential.
Mal'Ganis: If I truly replaced you, would anyone notice?
Baine Bloodhoof: <player>, it seems you could use some assistance.
Jaina Proudmoore: Mal'Ganis! I should have known you were meddling in this.
Mal'Ganis: Ah, Lady Proudmoore. A pity you did not come sooner--but I have stalled long enough for Zovaal's 'champion'. Farewell.
Jaina assesses we're losing the race against the Jailer and his forces, and uses quick travel to bring us to the Forge in
, but unfortunately, her assessment proves to be correct, as we are too late: the Jailer and Anduin managed to activate the Forge and open the way into the Sepulcher of the First Ones. As Jaina feels the faintest familiar presence in Anduin's sword, we return to Haven defeated in
. This ends Chapter 2 of the 9.2 Campaign.
Chapter 3: Forming an Understanding
At this point, the Jailer has managed to break his way into the Sepulcher and seal it behind him, so we're currently unable to chase him there. Bolvar decides we should help the Enlightened in any way we can, while we figure out a way to breach into the Sepulcher, and Pelagos offers assistance with the Devourer problem in the zone in
As we enter Genesis Fields, we're met with a weird sounding voice, nothing we quite have heard before. As we follow the voice in
, we locate an Oracle automa, and we're barely able to understand her telling us to assist her by seeking knowledge. As we attempt to speak to her, we're ambushed by devourers. We defend the oracle, but not before she falls unconscious. We escort her back to Haven in
, to maybe find something to wake her up.
Once we return to Haven with the Oracle, the Enlightened want nothing to do with it - They simply say the ways of the First Ones are incomprehensible, not even believing the Oracle would have talked to us. Pelagos remembers Firim, the broker that helps us when we first arrived in Zereth Mortis, and we ask around about him in
In these notes, we learn that the Enlightened are not supposed to meddle with the intent and creations of the first ones, lest they face exile, the same fate Firim originally had. To this note, the Sepulcher of the First Ones is off-limits to their research. We eventually find a letter mentioning that Firim was last seen west of the Forge, and we chase that clue in
Unfortunately, on exploration, we find out the Enlightened who wrote about Firim murdered on the road, but he carried a map to Firim's Hideout - And we use this map to reach the broker. We find Firim's hideout, but he's not too happy to see us, as he believes we're bringing assassins from Cartel Xy right to his doorstep.
We tell Firim about the Oracle we found, but like the other Enlightened, he also does not believe us. While Pelagos retrieves the Oracle from Haven, we help dispatch the Cartel Xy presence in the area in
We then discuss the Oracle with Firim in
, where it is mentioned the Oracle sought a Core. Firim attempts to use the Core we retrieved for him on our first encounter in Zereth Mortis, and a placeholder cutscene happens here - The Oracle wakes up briefly when that core is brought to her, but immediately falls unconscious again, the Core turning into a mysterious small automa.
We follow this automa to several Concordance Consoles in
, and find out this Oracle is capable of at least partially deciphering the strange alphabet used by the First Ones. We eventually follow the automa to a cave full of broken robots, and uncover a tablet that Firim absorbs, uncovering all of its knowledge.
Firim tells us that the automa has taken a liking to us, and we further bond with it in
, but this is where the questline currently ends on the PTR - This questline unlocks the Cypher of the First Ones system, and currently cannot be completed. We know there is only one more quest after this,
, which wraps up Chapter 3 of the 9.2 Campaign!
