2021 for the Wowhead team was a year of growth and new directions for the site, and your support makes it all worthwhile. We expanded our dev and content teams to cover TBC, Season of Mastery, and Diablo II to great success, with more exciting plans in store for 2022. While the ongoing pandemic and Blizzard lawsuit created challenges this past year, the entire Wowhead team rose to the occasion to provide excellent information in a welcoming space.
Here's a look back at what we're particularly proud of on our site in the past year. Happy New Year, and we look forward to another year of datamining, site features, and guides in 2022.
Donating to RAINN
Wowhead donated $10,000 to
RAINN, the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network
. This donation to RAINN, one of the groups recommended by ABK (Activision Blizzard King) workers, was made in support of all who have been victims of harassment and discrimination in the gaming industry as a whole. Wowhead stands in solidarity with these workers as they strive towards creating a better workplace, and they have our deepest and most heartfelt sympathies for the unconscionable treatment that they have endured. Sexual discrimination and harassment are endemic, industry-wide issues that need to be brought to a halt.
Recent allegations of harassment and discrimination at Activision Blizzard and Ubisoft, including the
State of California's lawsuit against Activision Blizzard
, have trained a spotlight on these companies, as well as issues in the industry as a whole.
ABK
and
Ubisoft
workers have rallied to continue to bring attention to these despicable practices. With our continued coverage, Wowhead hopes to keep the community informed of these issues and encourage real change within the industry.
Pride Pin Fundraiser
Our annual
Pride fundraiser
brought in $30,460.67, with all proceeds benefiting
The Trevor Project.
The Wowhead Pride Pin was designed to embrace and celebrate the LGBTQ+ community, their families and allies. Wowhead counts itself among them, recognizing the diversity within our staff and community. Thank you for your record support this year!
Expanding Into Diablo
We're very excited about Wowhead's expansion into Diablo in 2021, which kicked off with with great coverage of Diablo II: Resurrected in September including a
skill calculator
and ever-popular
Runewords Guide
. We have further plans for Diablo Immortal and Diablo IV in 2022, and to prepare for that, we've expanded our team with a Diablo Content Manager while the devs have been polishing our multi-game menu navigation and and site layout behind the scenes.
Site Design Improvements
We further expanded the Wowhead team in 2021 with a full-time designer, leading to many exciting visual improvements like our new footer, improved tables in guides, and
interactive tier lists
.
There are many eye-catching projects in development, including a unique style for Diablo content and revamp of Today in WoW, which we've enjoyed mocking up and refining in 2021. We've also been working behind the scenes on modernizing older site elements, like adding guides to the search box results and easily swapping between WoW game versions, which we hope to share with you in early 2022!
Shadowlands Class Editorials
Shadowlands featured several notable class updates this year, including Shards of Domination, Tier Sets, and the Mage Tower--not to mention numerous class tuning hotfixes. We committed to bringing you additional editorials and insights on these updates from our writers in 2021 to keep you in the loop on what the changes mean, such as
Analysis of 9.1 Shadow Priest Changes
, as well as detailed guides to specific topics like
Mage Tower Class Guides
.
Site Features
We've expanded our dev team in 2021 so we can refine the site's backend while continuing to deliver helpful features across all the games Wowhead supports, ranging from a
complete revamp of the raid comp tool for TBC
to expanding our Today in WoW offerings for Shadowlands. We've also been continually updating our Classic and TBC
Gear Planners
, added support for new customizations to our
Dressing Room
, quickly spun up a TBC database, and created our
first Diablo calculator
.
Wowhead News and Guides
By growing our team of writers in 2021, we've been able to expand our news and guides offerings to Shadowlands, TBC, Season of Mastery, and Diablo II, while maintaining the same level of detail and quality associated with Wowhead. While the pandemic prevented us from meeting in person, we had a busy schedule with BlizzConline in February, TBC launch in May, Patch 9.1 in June, Diablo II in September, Season of Mastery in November, and Mage Tower in December.
While we always covered high level news for other Blizzard franchises, such as new game announcements and major updates, we committed to covering Activision Blizzard itself as well in 2021 in order to help players stay better informed on what the company was doing as opposed to just the game.
Wowhead Team Messages
We wanted to close out our year in review with messages from some of the Wowhead team!
Anshlun (Retail News & Class Guides)
Ahh 2021... It is almost unreal that the year is already over. With the on-going pandemic and the slower patch cycle on WoW, it still feels like 2020 didn't end.
With only one major content patch, 2021 has been the perfect year to play catch up with collections in WoW. Seeing the collector community expand and flourish during these trialing times has been invigorating, it is always nice to see more people learning about WoW's real end-game!
On a more personal note, this year has been one of the most challenging in my life, with even more challenges looking ahead in the future. But at the same time, it has been a good year that brought many positive changes as well.
May 2022 bring us strength and perseverance to move forward to achieve our goals and, hopefully, more than one major content patch for retail WoW!
Archimtiros (News & Community Features)
I'm happy to have continued the great work here at Wowhead, bringing news and information to the playerbase, while helping to highlight community concerns and interests. This has been a trying year for many, and while each new article or story brings its own challenges, our team has risen to meet them time and time again. The coming year will be no different, though it is my hope that we continue to grow and serve the World of Warcraft community in new and exciting ways.
Cinereus (Diablo Content Manager)
Hi! I’m Cinereous Styx, but just call me Cinereus or Cin. I am delighted to be the newest member of the Wowhead staff, focusing on Diablo content. I’m a longtime Diablo player as well as a WoW fan since Vanilla, and if I am not playing a Blizzard game, I am often on Zwift getting in my miles in Watopia or on the Makuri Isles.
It’s a great time for Wowhead to be getting into Diablo. Diablo II: Resurrected is about to have its first patch and enter its first ladder season, Diablo Immortal is in the late phases of its closed Beta, and Diablo IV just showed us a great Quarterly Update. There’s enough to keep any Diablo fan awake at night dreaming of adventures in Sanctuary. Or maybe that’s just me.
Here’s wishing everyone a safe and healthy holiday, and may Grandfather Winter bless you with just the item you needed.
Dderserei (Retail PvP Content)
Four and a half years on, I am still blown away that I'm part of such an amazing team whose work I admired for so long and who continue to produce high-quality, relevant, innovative content regardless of the circumstances.
I began my time at Wowhead in 2017, starting off with AWC tournament writeups. I was involved with the first iterations of our arena class guides before taking over the coordination of the retail PvP guides and editorials in 2018. This year I became more integrated with the retail class guides team. It has been great to collaborate with other content coordinators and share our ideas for refining how we run things behind the scenes. One of my main focuses on the management side of things this year has been improving our guide reviewing process to ensure that our retail PvP guides are as up-to-date, accurate, and comprehensive as possible.
I want to say a big 'thank you' to all our PvP content writers for their diligent work. I also want to thank the readers - I hope we can continue to bring you useful content for many years to come. My goal from the start has been for Wowhead's PvP guides to be the best written guides available for PvP content and I hope that our team has been able to deliver that. Awareness of Wowhead's PvP guides still seems to be growing and I hope this is something that continues in the future.
I wish you all an amazing, safe, and Honor-filled 2022!
DiscordianKitty (Retail News & Lore)
2021 has been my first full year at Wowhead! I've spent most of my time covering the story of Shadowlands, with a focus on improving my story walkthrough guides. I've also begun to experiment with Lore Spotlights - highlighting important or interesting lore moments as they become relevant - and I'm quite pleased with how that's turning out. Out of everything I've done this year, my personal favorite article is my
cinematic analysis of Shattered Legacies
.
This year has been a difficult one for many of us who have work relating to Activision Blizzard. For me, I have found some solace in helping with the coverage of the lawsuit, as, at the end of the day, it's better for this stuff to be dragged out into the open and dealt with rather than hidden away and allowed to continue. I've also felt really uplifted by the work of
@ABetterABK
- it's wonderful to see workers at the company taking a stand and creating effective change.
Most of all, I continue to be inspired by my colleagues at Wowhead, who work tirelessly to provide important news and guides on all things World of Warcraft. I couldn't ask to be part of a better team.
Jaydaa (Retail Class Guides & Editorials)
In 2021, Wowhead's content coverage has expanded across multiple eras of World of Warcraft and now into Diablo! To have had a part in our expansion into the world of Sanctuary is truly a full-circle moment since Diablo 2 was my first major Blizzard game; I grew up in the world of Sanctuary. I'm excited for our continued coverage of Diablo 2 Resurrected, especially with the first ladder season and major balance changes on the horizon.
With Shadowlands, I'm proud to be part of our team that is looking to push our content coverage above and beyond expectations. Not only do we want provide the latest class and system changes direct from datamining, but we've been evolving our class coverage to provide context for our readers direct from our class guide writers and a number of expert guests. Whether it's the latest round of hotfix buffs/nerfs or the long-awaited return of Tier Sets, we've got you covered when you want to learn how you'll likely be playing your class in the latest content patch.
While we've dealt with another difficult year after an already challenging 2020, I'm grateful to work with this outstanding, supportive, and inclusive staff that have allowed me to take on new challenges at Wowhead. As we head into 2022, I look forward to not only future WoW and Diablo patches and expansions and bringing that content to our readers but also the opportunity to do better as a gaming community.
Jerek (Lead Developer)
It's certainly been quite a year for Wowhead and the WoW community. Early on when Shadowlands was new we were refining our expansion features and planning on how to start covering Diablo content in addition, and even hired two front-end developers at once (we'll be hiring again soon, so watch for that!). Shortly after, the lawsuit happened, and the WoW community has been reeling since.
There's been a lot of shocking and disappointing news, and I'm glad we've had such a strong news team to cover it well and help shine a light on the things that need to change -- not just at Activision Blizzard, but in the gaming industry as a whole. But despite how apocalyptic things can feel at times, I'm heartened by the community continuing to fight for a better tomorrow. Carry on, and the world will be better for it.
Neryssa (Retail News & Guides)
Thank you everyone for yet another year working for Wowhead! 2021 has been a very hard year for me, both within the Warcraft universe and real life, and continuing my work within the site with the same drive and passion has definitely been one of the highlights of the year.
Throwing myself into different zones, exploring all their secrets and unveiling every single detail for hours on end, translating those into easy-to-digest guides for the community at large and seeing the reactions for these is always a delight. I hope I can continue delivering high-quality content for everyone in 2022. Looking forward to continue interacting with the community. Zereth Mortis is in the horizon, hoping to deliver another slew of high quality guides both for Patch 9.2 and the expansions to come!
I would like to wish both everyone who reads this small blurb, as well as all the amazing co-workers I have the pleasure of interacting with every day an amazing 2022. I think we can all agree we need this year to be the best one we've had in a long time!
Paryah (Community Features & Retail Guides)
There was I thinking 2020 wasn't THAT bad and 2021 came along and said "hold my Kaja Cola" - it was a shitshow, obviously (due apologies to Tali). That said, an absolute highlight of my year has been being able to continue to write for Wowhead and to be able to focus on the amazing people in our community with the
Community Spotlights
, a bit of nostalgia with
On This Day
, and an couple of regular spots with Rextroy and Taliesin & Evitel. I am looking forward to doing more in this vein going forward, as well as continuing to work on guides, and Diablo stuff, and, y'know, whatever needs doing. And maybe even meeting some of you at BlizzCon one of these years...
Thanks to the Wowhead staff, the Blizzard devs, and you. It's been a privilege to be here and I hope 2022 is fantabuloso for all of us!
Perculia (Site Director)
I'm incredibly proud of the Wowhead team for handling the challenges of 2021 with such grace and focus. In spite of the shadows cast by the Activision Blizzard lawsuit, we had a year of immense growth, launching a Diablo II mini-site, expanding news to industry coverage and class editorials, making plans to cover additional Diablo games, and handling BlizzConline, TBC, Patch 9.1, and Season of Mastery with top-quality news and guides--quite a busy year. With all these content updates, we greatly expanded our staff on both the development and content sides, which put my management and delegation skills to the test! I love seeing our team grow and look forward to sharing all the new things in 2022 we've been laying the foundation for in 2021, from a new front page layout to proper Diablo homepage.
Brightpaw also says hi, as Chief Morale Officer. In 2021 he learned how to balance on the shower rod and open the front door.
It has not always been easy working with the lawsuit hanging over everything, but my amazing co-workers and community keep me positive and motivated. I hope 2022 brings healing, good health, and happiness to you all.
PigeonD (Datamining Team)
2021 is as busy as ever with Shadowlands, Classic and TBCC all having updates. In particular for Shadowlands, with 9.1.5 and 9.2 PTR there have been a lot of things to work on. Sometimes the weekly PTR build can be a little intense and stressful, but one of the best parts is being with our PTR data mining stream. I absolutely enjoy discovering new things with our wonderful content team and sharing things first hand with our live stream viewers.
On the site end, this year our awesome site devs have added many new and powerful tools that have made things so much easier when dealing with new builds, data and hotfixes. I'm forever grateful to work with everyone on the team.
This year I also got to work on something a little different, Wowhead Client 2.0. It's not me who started this new project but I got to pick it up and finish it all the way to its release. It's a good change-of-scenery in terms of codebase from my usual data tools madness, and I got to learn something new as well. I wanted to thank everyone who had taken part in the beta testing and reporting all the bugs.
I'm sure 2022 is going to be as interesting and challenging. It looks like we're getting close to the end game of Shadowlands and I can't wait to see what's coming in 10.0 that will break all our tools again ;)
Stay safe everyone, happy new year, and most importantly I wish you all finishing the mage tower challenges :D
RenataKane (Retail, Classic/TBC & Diablo Guides)
While I've remained busy throughout writing guides and editing for all areas of Wowhead, the part I found most personally satisfying was being part of the small but dedicated team that introduced a new franchise to Wowhead with our coverage of
Diablo II: Resurrected
. The guide writers, managers, and developers all worked incredibly hard to create guides and tools with very little in the way of our usual resources such as databases. Because we had to get creative, we learned interesting things we will be keeping in mind and applying to other projects.
This has been a challenging year in many ways for the entire Wowhead team, with difficult and emotionally charged revelations about the company that creates the games we love. Yet through it all, this has remained an incredibly supportive group that's managed to keep an eye on the ball: delivering news and quality guides to gamers around the world. My special thanks to Perculia and all the staff for all their hard work keeping this crazy group on track. And here's wishing all of Wowhead's fans a much better 2022!
Rokman (Classic WoW Content Manager)
Writing for Wowhead in 2021 has been an absolute pleasure, from working with writers, to developing new tools for users, as well as being a part of producing content across many major releases! Burning Crusade Classic launched in June, Diablo II: Resurrected launched in September, and Classic Season of Mastery launched in November. The Wowhead crew did a fantastic job on all three of these launches and I was honored to be a part of the team.
2022 will hopefully bring much more amazing content for World of Warcraft and we can only hope for more great Classic content! Wrath of the Lich King Classic? The next Season of Classic Era? No matter what is being released, you'll find the Wowhead team doing our best to bring the best content we possibly can! Cheers!
Squishei (Retail WoW Content Manager)
Throughout 2021, the Wowhead team has continued to grow, covering everything World of Warcraft while also expanding into Diablo! The Wowhead team worked tirelessly this year and I'm very happy with the content that we've managed to provide for players over the past year.
Three patches released in 2021, and it was a pleasure working with the Wowhead team to cover the latest news and provide guides for each patch to help keep the community in the loop on the latest changes in the game. From providing class guides for the Mage Tower in Patch 9.1.5, all the way to providing a list of class and system changes for every PTR build -- there was plenty of amazing news and editorial pieces from across the Wowhead team. We expanded our PTR class editorial pieces from our Class Writers to help gives some context on how the class changes will affect players, and also highlighted more community achievements and creative content.
For 2021, the release of the Sanctum of Domination raid was one of these moments for me, as some of the bosses received very last minute hotfixes between the last time they were tested and them showing up on launch. The
Dungeon Journal was even updated
during the extended maintenance (less than an hour before the raid was supposed to launch), surprising a lot of the community! But the Race to World First was amazing as usual, with the emotional moment of Echo learning that Mythic Sylvanas doesn't die at 50%, the back and forth race throughout the entire raid and much more.
Hopefully 2022 has a lot more in store for World of Warcraft, with Patch 9.2 (the return of Tier Sets) and assumingly an expansion announcement at some point during the year!
Stiven (Datamining Team
The year has finally come to an end. I want to say thanks everyone who has been watching my datamining streams and supporting my work. I have enjoyed the whole year with the community, highlighting all the brand new stuff in World of Warcraft, Diablo 2 Resurrected and Diablo Immortal. I also had my chance this year to try a whole new project and work on a modelviewer for FFXIV community. This project was a good experience and it will help us apply what we learned to future development of Diablo modelviewers. I can't wait to dig into the data and see what lies ahead in 2022.
May health, prosperity, happiness and luck accompany you in 2022!
Tharid (Diablo News and Guides)
The neverending space-time spiral we call 2021 comes to an end - and with it a tumultuous dozen months in the terrestrial and the gaming sphere as well. Besides the (at this time almost habitual) hardships caused by the ongoing pandemic, we, the Blizzard fans of the world, had to endure what I would call a year of pure horror.
But 2021 had its good stories as well. For the first time, Wowhead featured the launch of a Diablo game - and that with great success! Being able to cover Diablo II: Resurrected, the title that stole my gamer heart over 20 years ago, means the world to me. The thought that one of our guides might have helped a person to fall in love with the Diablo franchise fills my heart with joy. I want to thank the whole Wowhead family for the warm welcome, and I hope that 2022 will become a better year for all of us - in and outside of Blizzard gaming!
