Boosting & the WoW Economy
The topic of Boosting has been doing the rounds of late. For those that are not aware, Boosting is the sales of services (in this case usually dungeon or raid runs) in exchange for gold. It has been prevalent and very well organised in recent years and last year was in the spotlight when the
Gallywix community was banned
for using Real Money Transactions (RMT).
In the past few weeks,
has covered the topic in two videos (
), going in-depth into the way it works, the problems and solutions it provides along with some thoughts on how it can be improved.

in response to these videos...
Boosting is here to stay for the foreseeable future. Through the token it’s actually great for Blizzard that players have ways to spend gold to get more powerful, and the more gold the better. We even saw how they designed legendaries in a way that would guarantee high prices for a while, giving further incentives for players flush with real life cash, but low on time to play the game to fork out for a token. It’s impossible to really ban the selling of services for gold, and nothing will ever beat boosting as the best way to speed up your character progression. I’m sad that this is the only thing that’s worth selling in trade chat, as it really works to make the game feel less personal, so hopefully they at least try to end that side of it.
also asked a broader
question regarding Boosting and the Token system
and how it's affected the economy...
Past expansions I casually made enough gold to keep myself subscribed with gold only, rushing a bit to get the next expansion and an ocasional name or realm change... now I found myself STRUGGLING really hard to keep up with it, my gold diminished drastically from march until now.
It feels that there's no 'its not much, but honest work' to keep a solid gold income unless you have an alt army to run callings and table. You need several hours of skinning to farm enough for a token. Also everything else feels dirty cheap compared to today's token prices. Barely anything reaching acceptable gold per hour ratio (and I'm currently unemployed lmfao).
Now I got myself into boosting so I could save a couple bucks, since I was getting uncomfortable with my amount of gold, and even boosting isnt paying enough these days but still an acceptable g/hr . It feels that a huge portion of WoW's economy is revolving around the boosting services
Token bought by those who buy boosts being sold for those that provide the boosts, while inflating the token price and making every other activity less profitable when compared to WoW tokens. Anyone else feeling the same? How you guys that are not mega goblins keeping the gold income steady these days?
People have been boosting since classic. The only difference is now you have a way of doing it that doesn't involve gold farmers, real-money transfers, and stolen accounts.
There is another difference.
That difference is that there are so many more time-gated systems that, where in the past, you could participate in the highest level of content relatively quickly via crafted boes, raid boes, and some moderate dungeon grinding, this is no longer an option, it would take months of this style of gameplay to be heroic or mythic raid ready.
If I recall correctly, the last time you could really do it like this was either Cataclysm or the first half of MoP. It wasn't overly rough to get the legendary cloak in mop, I got it on I want to say 6 toons, and I wasn't all that hardcore.
I'm about the same level of hardcore now and I have exactly one character with a Shadowlands Legendary.
I picture WoW tokens and gold-only boosting services as just another addition to methods of goldmaking. This is an answer that I think tackles the heart of the question at hand: how can I most efficiently stay subbed to WoW with gold only. The best answer is - play hard and make gold hard during the first 2-4 weeks of a new patch/expansion. Gold is flying off the shelves, swapping from one hand to another, from whales to little goblins, from WoW token buyers to their AH counterparts. If you stick with this rule of thumb, you’ll have enough gold to last you the expansion and won’t need to worry about sinking hours in farming for little profit or even selling carries during lulls in content like this. This will be completely anecdotal evidence, but I’ve made around 80m gold profit this expansion alone, but I’d say the vast majority of that was made in prolly 3-4months time, all focused around the release of the expansion/patches.
About the WoW token- I understand that ppl feel that this devalues gold, but I just think of it as service trade. And while it is monetary currency that ppl are using, we all deal in some type of currency-like measure - time, knowledge, skills. I think it devalues titles if you can buy your way straight into it, but I’ve never been huge on vanity items/mog/titles in the first place. Goldmaking has always and continues to be a personal endeavor.
TLDR; make lots of gold at the opening of expansions/patches and WoW tokens add more access to ppl in the market - so it’s a good thing.
As someone that holds a decent level booster role as well as a mid tier advertising role i can tell you that a lot of people are extremely happy with the services provided by boosting communities. I made hundreds of millions before i even got into boosting communities from being on a number of realms in the region and doing the "old school" goldmaking markets, but i wanted to try something new. I can tell you that last month was probably one of my worst months and i made close to 7mil just from boosting and advertising. This doesn't include any of the gold i made from auctions. I still make enough to pay for all my accounts subs several times over but i set everything up a long time ago.
As a goldmaker the services boosting communities offer just make sense. Being able to receive payments on most realms in the region. If i wish to expand i can simply put a realm as my payout realm collect enough gold to start flipping or crafting and them I am good to go. You also meet people throughout the region, which can help you if you wanna get into something like gold swapping. Information is also one of the most important sources of wealth that a goblin can have and a boosting community is a giant pool of information. Joining a boosting community just makes good business since if your into high end goldmaking like I am.
A lot of the inflated token price has to do with everything going on with wow right now. Lots of people left cause its middle of a patch, not happy with the harassment issues at blizzard, or just quit for now cause or irl things like going back to school or work.
It's clear to see the service of Boosting is well esablished as a gold making method and many are happy with the way it works out. In many ways, it's simply a product of the system exacerbated by things like the incredibly high cost of Legendaries amongst other barriers that make getting hold of high end achievements and mounts near impossible for some who would rather just spent the gold to obtain them.
Kraken Latte's 5 Gold Tips
has a nice little video going through simple things to help you with your gold making journey..
These are simple tips you likely know about, but it's good to have a refresher! And it helps out new folks as well!
Mission Table Tips for Alts
Speaking of hint and tips,
has some great techniques for getting fresh alts up to speed with troops on the mission table..
Shaping fate + world bosses on each alt each week. I only do gold/fish/enchanting/xp missions on the alts atm.
For non NF alts I don't level my mission table up all the way so that I can make certain that I can complete all of the missions that I want. Doing this keeps a slight positive anima balance.
For a new alt do the following:
Go night fae
Do not activate your soulbinds and keep your mission table unused
Grind up in renown to get the 75k xp items.
Use all of your items on Niya, bringing her to max or close to max level - this will set all of your troops at her level
Accept all of your backlogged companions and enjoy level 60 troops for all of your missions.
There is some discussion whether troops delevel as you gain more companions as they apparently use the median of your companion level. Perhaps you could spend some time earning a few more xp tokens to rapidly level up companions one at a time? Let us know in the comments below if this works..
Hidden Twink Markets
has a great video this week with links to resources all about the Twinking market...
- Guide to start twinking:
- Farming spots:
This can be very server dependent, but there are certainly niches out there for specific gear with specific stats.
How to Deal with Competition
The Lazy Gold Maker
had a great discussion all about what to do with competition in both Retail and TBC/Classic ...
In this video I'll take you through my bests methods for dealing with competition and what markets you can pick to avoid it!
If you want to read about goldmaking and learn to make gold head on over to
The video talks about the fact that competition is good - it shows you are in the right market. He then talks about optimizing your costs and how the AH differs between Retail and Classic and how you can be creative in finding ways to post and niches to capture.
Very interesting is also the differences between the use of Trade Chat and direct AH to generate sales and my suspicion is that the lack of
in Classic serves as a major driver to more player interaction in Classic.
How Many Time to Repost Before Vendoring
returns with a great video talking about how many times to repost before vendoring an item...
Today we're answering the World of Warcraft goldmaking question: How many times should you repost an item before you vendor it?
Short answer, I don't.
Long answer, you originally posted it because it would sell but it's not selling as quickly as you hoped, so just...let someone else try. They'll only buy it if it's worth their while, but you don't know how cheap they want it. So, discount the item, but only a little bit at a time. This video shows how to set that up in TSM.
In true Reckles style, the video goes through an in-depth discussion of practical uses of what you can do in TSM to make use of the variable
and factor in a discount. Spreadsheets are involved and its a great example of hoe to make TSM work for you.
I'd further add that you could add in VendorSell and calculations on Listing Fee to elaborate on the equation even more, but that perhaps is a discussion for another time.
Most of this information was discussed and originally posted on the
subreddit or in the accompanying
