WoW Economy Weekly Wrap-Up
Welcome to the 83rd edition of the WoW Economy Weekly Wrap-up! In this edition we're looking at Patch 8.2 PTR datamining updates, an A-Z of gold-making, the end of Noblegarden 2019 plus the monthly Game Time Giveaway
If you're new to this series or want to re-visit past posts, you can

My name is
Gumdrops
and I’m the lead moderator for the
/r/woweconomy subreddit
and the accompanying
Discord server
. I am also the Support/Community Manager & User Evangelist for
TradeSkillMaster
, the Auction House addon suite for World of Warcraft. I stream on Twitch for
Method
and my focus is on mentoring and tutoring the WoW community in all things gold-making. I hope to cover and showcase some of the interesting topics, discussions, content and guides that have been going on over the last week in the gold making community. Some that you might have missed as a veteran gold maker, or you might be interested in checking out for the first time as a new or aspiring ‘goblin’.
The format will not be that of a traditional guide, but links to further reading with commentary and opinions of my own. I will be looking at the bigger picture, the decision making and thought processes in being a gold maker – rather than a step by step instructional list. As the saying goes, “give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”.
Datamining Updates
After my analysis of the PTR datamining last week, it's always worth remembering that PTR is not 'live'! Things can and will change - and all of the materials required for the 8.2 recipes have done just that.
The Alchemy crafts no longer need the early-expansion products to make them a 'Greater' version, instead they'll need some of the new herbs and some of the old herbs.
Recipes for the Rise of Azshara Potions & Flasks

Ricetta: Pozione della Prossimità Potenziata

Ricetta: Calderone Superiore Mistico
- Use: Creates a cauldron that raid members can use to gain the benefit of a flask appropriate to their class and talents. Cauldron has 30 uses and lasts for 10 min.
On the one hand, it would have been an interesting mechanic if they
did
require the previous crafts to make. That would keep the original items valuable/desirable and create a secondary market link. With the new 8.2 recipes not requiring any of the old stuff, the original crafts will lose all value for 'current content' and there'd be little point in investing time or money in obtaining or upgrading those recipes to rank 3 if you don't already have them. I'm still not 100% satisfied with the way the professions are panning out through Battle for Azeroth, these attempts at keeping them fresh aren't sitting well with me and unless some complete re-think of the system is implemented I likely won't consider them again for personal gold-making strategies. It feels like too much of a profession 'reset' whereas there could and should be systems to compliment what you already have and empower the investment you've already made. I can imagine some kind of artifact system for professions, where you unlock additional skills or perks as you continue playing through an expansion - maybe this should be what the 'Tool of the Trade' should be in 9.0?
Reputation Mounts
/u/thekezz shared the recent Wowhead post
about some reputation vendor mounts costing up to 50,000g despite them being reskins or recolours of existing models.
The new includes Gryphon/Pterodaxxe mounts for 50,000 gold
. With the deflation of WoW lately, even 50000 is a challenge to get.
It's one thing to have mounts like longboy or the 500,000 Argus mount which are unique and cool, but there's no reason for reskins and recolors to be so expensive. It's making mount collecting not worth it and a bother.
This was infact posted before the
second PTR build was published, where the prices
increased
, to 90,000g
.
Redini del Predapalude Catturato
A swamp-dwelling subspecies of pterrordax known to feast on young bloodfeasters.
Vendor: Provisioner Lija
Zone: Nazmir
Faction: Talanji's Expedition - Exalted
Cost: 590000g
Wowhead user ChocoboValentine comments on the news, frustrated at the direction of the prices
:
I try to stay positive, but man that cost increase to all those mounts is a gut punch. I clicked on this article going "oh good, let's see what the more reasonable updated prices on those mounts is!", and then I had to squint and lean in to squint at my screen reeeeeeeeeal close to double check that I was seeing the correct number of zeroes.
The thing that perplexes me -- in Draenor or Legion, an average player/mount collector would have an OK chance of making enough gold in a reasonable amount of time to buy all of those. In BfA, gold making from the more casual sources has slowed to a dead crawl. I'm an amateur gold making enthusiast, and I haven't even gotten enough yet to get all the frogs, never mind the brutosaur, the expensive direhorn, and some of the other total gold-sink mounts. One or two desperately expensive mounts makes sense for trying to reduce the amount of gold in the game, but putting out mount after mount that is over 50K and 100K results in a great deal of the player population just never being able to buy them.
I understand manufacturing scarcity for mounts -- it adds perceived value and makes players feel like they have something special. Falling back on forcing that scarcity through a simple paywall (whether it be gold or irl money) is just...disappointing. It lacks creativity, and it just looks really greedy and lazy from my end.
As we discussed last week, player spending has shifted from luxury goods and option treats like mounts, pets, transmog and toys, to essentials and functional commodities like consumables, materials and general 'playing costs' including repairs and travel. Unless you're actively playing the gold-making game, sometimes even spending more time on it than other end-game activities (like myself), the 'average' player is never going to be able to afford these mounts. All-in-all the costs of the gold sinks introduced in Battle for Azeroth such as mounts, pets and toys are nearing 10 million gold, which is a clear indication that the developers want gold removed from the economy.
Discussion Point
How do you feel about starting over with professions in 8.2? Would you prefer to keep what you have now and get different recipes/mechanics to empower your crafted products? Do you have enough gold to buy all of the new vendor mounts in 8.2?
A-Z of Gold-making
/u/midnighthawkgaming has launched a new YouTube series
showcasing some interesting markets, items or concepts for every letter of the Alphabet! The first episode, being the letter A, was released this week. I'd definitely recommend tuning in for future episodes, and to
check out his Zero to One Million challenge series to see these things in practice
.
Hi guys this is the first episode of a new series I'm doing, it's an a to z of gold making ideas mainly for people new to gold making, always a lot of questions about what can people farm so hopefully this series can help some of the newer goblins out, each episode will consist of a few items and farms beginning with a certain letter starting at A and eventually working our way to Z.
Cristallo Arcano
These are found when mining
Minerale di Torio
, I believe the highest drop chance is from
Vena Ricca di Torio
but all should have a chance of dropping one. Personally I like to do laps around Un'goro Crater. They sell for around 400g each on my server, but I like to then send them onto my alchemist so that I can transmute them into
Lingotto d'Arcanite
which sell for around 600-700g each. They also have a chance to proc giving even more profit.
I remember farming my own Crystals to make a Thunderfury back in the day, some laps around Winterspring are also recommended! If you have a surplus, transmute some of those Arcanite Bars in to
Lingotto d'Elementio Incantato
and post them in stacks of 10.
Cristallo dell'Abisso
These are created from disenchanting epic drops from Wrath of the Lich King instances which can be used or sold on their own, but I like to use the enchanting spell
Frantumazione Abissale
which allows you to turn 1 Crystal in some
Polvere Infinita
or
Essenza Cosmica Superiore
, usually yielding greater gold potential.
The great thing about expansion deflation and inflation, some of the vendor costs of gear from previous content are no longer 'out of reach' for the average player. You can visit
Rafael Langrom
and buy some epic quality stuff to disenchant in to
Cristallo dell'Abisso
if you don't want to farm, and there are none on your AH.
Pelliccia Artica
This is a rare drop when skinning beasts in Northrend, and used in lots of Wrath of the Lich King patterns. It sells for around 450g each on my server but may differ on yours, the first and last bosses of Trial of the Crusader seems to drop 1 x Fur and 13 x
Cuoio Boreale
, there is also a vendor outside the Leatherworking shop which you can trade 10 x
Cuoio Boreale Pesante
for 1 Fur. It takes 6 x
Cuoio Boreale
to make 1 x
Cuoio Boreale Pesante
using Leatherworking, so you can guarantee 1 Fur every 60 leather you farm, allowing you to keep a nice balance of both on the auction house.
Arctic fur is one of those items that come in very handy for Leatherworking crafts from Wrath of the Lich King, but also for a hot commodity crafted by Engineers, the faction chopper mounts. I often included the Fur in my farming targets when I used to have time for it. Now I pay over-the-odds on the AH when I need it, since it's an easy market to control and manipulate.
Two other items of note are
Alga d'Ancora
and
Minerale d'Adamantite
. Anchor weed is used to make potions and has a rare chance to spawn in place of one of the ground based bfa herbs ( not star moss or siren's pollen) a great farm i used is the vigil hill farm (the route is briefly shown in the video), and the reason i want to mention
Minerale d'Adamantite
is that there is a rare chance for a
Vena di Korio
to spawn in place of the Adamantite which sells for between 500g-650g each on my realm.
Discussion Point
What other 'A' related things would you mention for the A-Z of gold-making? What do you think will be shared for future episodes?
Noble Garden
There's still a couple days left of Noblegarden 2019 at the time of the post going live so I wanted to do a throwback to an original gold-making Youtube, OldBess. His guide is still perfect for making gold during and after the event!
You can also check out the full event guide here on Wowhead.com, and it's the last chance to join the Wowhead Egg Hunt!
Discussion Point
Have you been farming eggs? Have you ever invested in holiday items to resell in the future, how did it work out?
