Engineering has long been considered the best profession for PvP. This is a PvP-centric leveling path that will make things you can use along the way.
Introduction to Leveling Engineering for PvP
Engineering has many fun and useful applications, but its most interesting use is in PvP combat. From stunning enemies, stopping runners, damaging opponents, moving faster, defending yourself, creating chaos, and promoting mayhem, there isn't another profession that adds as much utility and interest to PvP as Engineering.
Everything listed here is geared toward creating useful PvP items as you level
, whether it's making those items directly or focusing on creating the components/tools needed to make the more complicated items. It also ensures you will have all the items you need to prove your worth to future Gnomish or Goblin engineering trainers. This guide wastes little; everything it makes creates something potentially useful for PvP. Even in cases where you might end up with extras, those components will be used in for future PvP consumables such as bombs or grenades.
This does not cover all the best items covered in my previous article about the best Classic WoW engineered items for PvP. The very best bombs, grenades, and the three elemental defensive items don't appear. The best bombs and grenades spanned levels where it was necessary to make other components and they didn't fit in. The defensive trinkets, all high-level, had materials or schematics that would be difficult to get and thus impractical for a leveling guide.
Classic WoW Engineering Items for PvP
If leveling efficiency is your preference, you may wish to check the standard engineer leveling guide instead. It will also give a great deal more general information on engineering.
Classic WoW Engineering Guide and Leveling 1-300
Gnomish vs. Goblin Engineering
For the purposes of this guide, I will assume that most engineers will be leveling through their 200s as
Gnomish
engineers -- at least from 200-240. It makes a great deal of sense to do so, as there is one highly useful PvP item made from Gnomish engineering -- the
Gnomish Death Ray
(Gnomish Engineering 240) -- that is
Bind on Pickup.
It doesn't require Gnomish Engineering to use, only to make, but because it's BoP, the only way to get your hands on this beauty is to make it yourself.
Bomb-centric PvPers wishing to adopt
Goblin
engineering for the long haul are
strongly
encouraged to level at least through 240 as Gnomish engineers, and switch only after making their very own Bind on Pickup
Gnomish Death Ray
.
Goblin Engineer Notes
are added in orange text. These will draw your attention to items you wish to save for future use in Goblin Engineering, such as the ingredients needed to switch specializations.
What You'll Need
Materials You'll Need
This includes all raw materials required to make everything in this guide, as well as what you need to complete the Gnomish Engineering quest line. You will be making all of the engineered-crafted components you will need along the way, so there is no need to buy those.
Amounts are high-confidence estimates. You may use more or less of these depending on your luck with the RNG. This includes all items made in this leveling scheme.
Duplicates appear because you will some materials in more than one level span. When this happens, the total amount appears in parentheses. This will help you know what you need for each level range, and what you will need overall.

Leveling Engineering for PvP
This isn't necessarily the cheapest or most efficient path in terms of general leveling. It is geared toward creating useful PvP items, minimizing wasted components, creating items against upcoming specialization quests, and sowing terror and discord among your future enemies.
Items marked TOOL should not be skipped, as these are important engineering tools you will need to make future items.
While one-off items such as
Gnomish Harm Prevention Belt
are added into the leveling stream, it will overlap with another item for leveling purposes, in case you don't yet have all the necessary materials. Leveling progress won't be affected.
Item ranges may vary slightly due to your luck with the RNG.
PvP Engineering: Leveling 1-75
This level stretch is the least useful for long-term PvP, but it gets some early bombs in your hand. They don't to a lot of damage, but they'll stun your opponents just fine.
Level to 40
: 60
Rough Blasting Powder
with 60
Rough Stone
. Keep at least 30 for future use.
Level to 60:
30

Rough Blasting Powder
, and 15
Linen Cloth

Train Journeyman Engineering at 75.
PvP Engineering: Leveling 75-150
In this level range, you'll start making a more useful bomb and preparing for future items needed for your specialization quests.
Level to 95
: 120
Coarse Blasting Powder
with 120
Coarse Stone
. This will grey out at 95. Save.
Level to 105
: 10

Bronze Bar
and 2
Weak Flux

At 150, you will need to train Expert Engineering.
PvP Engineering: Leveling 150-200
155-200 is the "pieces parts" section, but you can also make one of the best PvP toys in game!
Mostly you're making parts or finished objects needed to declare for Gnomish or Goblin specializations. But never fear, boom fans: you're learn to make one of the most important "don't leave home without it" explosives in your future PvP arsenal.
Level to 158

Gyro... What?
in the Badlands. Not totally necessary to make this one for these purposes, but worth mentioning.
Level to 195
: 70
Solid Blasting Powder
, with 140
Solid Stone
. Greys out at 195, but make all 70.
Level to 200
: 5

Heavy Blasting Powder
, and 5
Silver Contact
. Yields 10. Bombs away!
Goblin Engineering Notes: Save these; eventually you will need 20 for the Goblin Engineering quest.
PvP Engineering: Leveling 200-225
At 200 engineering and Level 30, you'll make the items needed to specialize as either Gnomish Engineering (repeating recommendation here to go Gnomish the first time around, at least until level 240). Then you'll start making parts you'll need for future interesting combines. Pick up the quest

Level to 214
: 11
Mithril Tube
, with 33
Mithril Bar
. Need 6 for the quest; save the remaining 5.
Goblin Engineering Notes: If you're determined not to do Gnomish Engineering first, you can skip the Accurate Scope, Advanced Target Dummy and 5 Mithril Tubes and do 13 extra Unstable Triggers instead (listed under 225-300 section).
Turn in your items and enjoy being a Gnomish Engineer!
If you are planning to make the
Gnomish Death Ray
, you may wish to obtain the
Plans: Inlaid Mithril Cylinder
from your gnome engineer trainer at this time. Create the plans and give them to a blacksmithing friend. You'll need a blacksmith to help you make the cylinder for this highly-desirable item.
Level to 215
:
Gnomish Net-o-Matic Projector
, with 1
Mithril Tube
, 2
Shadow Silk
, 4

PvP Engineering: Leveling 225-300
This is where the real fun begins. Your final levels will give you some of your best engineering specialty items yet, as well as most of the good trinkets. And of course, bigger, boomier bombs (also more expensive bombs, but that's why there are choices).
225
:
Gnomish Rocket Boots
, with 1
Black Mageweave Boots
, 2
Mithril Tube
, 4
Heavy Leather
, 8
Solid Blasting Powder
, and 4
Gyrochronatom
.
Level to 235
: 13
Unstable Trigger
, with 13
Mithril Bar
, 13
Mageweave Cloth
, and 13
Solid Blasting Powder
. These are deep green by this level and you may not get more than 5 or so points, but you need these anyway.
235
:
Gnomish Harm Prevention Belt
, with 1
Dusky Belt
, 4
Mithril Bar
, 2
Truesilver Bar
, 1
Unstable Trigger
, and 2
Aquamarine
. Remember that this is a Leather item only, so cloth classes cannot wear it. Also can't be used while shapeshifted. (This can actually be made at 215, but was placed here because of putting the Unstable Triggers later in the leveling path).
235
:
Gnomish Mind Control Cap
, with 24
Mithril Bar
, 4
Truesilver Bar
, 1
Unstable Trigger
, 2
Star Ruby
, and 4
Mageweave Cloth
. Mind-controlling fun for the whole family.
Level to 242
:
Mithril Casing
again; make 14 more with 42
Mithril Bar
. You will end up with a few left over, but you'll be using these in some of the best bombs in the game, so hang on to them.
240
:
Gnomish Death Ray
, with 2
Mithril Tube
, 1
Unstable Trigger
, 1
Essence of Undeath
, 4
Ichor of Undeath
, and 1
Inlaid Mithril Cylinder
.
Goblin Engineering Notes: Once you have reached 240 and successfully made your Gnomish Death Ray, you can switch specializations to Goblin Engineering.
Level to 250
: 10
Hi-Explosive Bomb
, with 20
Mithril Casing
, 10
Unstable Trigger
, and 20
Solid Blasting Powder
. Yields 40 (MOAR!) bombs.
Level to 260
: 75
Dense Blasting Powder
, with 150
Dense Stone
. Greys out at 260; make all.
Level to 290:
30
Thorium Widget
, with 90
Thorium Bar
and 30
Runecloth
. Save.
Level to 300:
25
Thorium Grenade
, with 25
Thorium Widget
, 75
Thorium Bar
, 75
Dense Blasting Powder
and 75
Runecloth
. Fling at your unsuspecting enemies.
