Players continue to exercise their creativity with WoW in a myriad of ways. This time around, woodworker Zephryus sent us pictures of his awesome home-made PC tower! This custom-made tower has a big Horde logo etched on the front, with murlocs etched on the upper portion and on the epoxy cover at the side.
According to Zephryus, he took around 5 weeks in and out to finish this project. He's been a woodworker for as long as he can remember, having access to his own shop for the last 30 years. He also explained some of his building process below.
I'm 65 yrs old I'm retired US Merchant Marine / Master Crafts Man / Chef / (disabled). I still do woodworking these days but just smaller stuff like the Horde Tower. I have been working wood since I can remember the other work just fills in the gaps I guess. Yes, I do have a small shop that I've been using for the past 30 yrs or so.
My inspiration is the fact that I like to play WoW, have been since Burning Crusade came out, I thought it would make for an interesting project. The Horde emblem cause I play on that side only and my daughter Sabrina came up with the idea of the murlocs and drew the layout for the top of case cut out. One of my guildmates suggested an etching on the front door so I came up with the Murloc's Island and etched that into the door.
I reclaimed the wood from a Plum tree that was felled last year, so I waited for months for it to start drying, then I chainsawed it into smaller pieces let it dry more so I could finally use it. Next is to turn that into usable boards By re-sawing, planning and jointing the boards. Once I have usable pieces I bookmatch the ones I can into panels that I can then glue up into wider panels. Once I have all the panels laid out I can then start the process of making the inner box to hold all the parts, I pretty much do the internal layout on the fly, what I do need to pay close attention to is the Mother Board layout in conjunction to the back panel.
This time I decided to cover the PS unit in wood also for a cleaner look inside, as I was wrapping the inner case with outer panels finding a place for the power switch and USB ports was a bit of a dilemma as I didn't want anything in the outer sides to distract from the artwork.
Once I've cut out the emblem and the Murlocs I filled the openings with Epoxy to give the backlighting more effect than several coats of Finnish inside and out hand rubbed between each coat and after.
Zephryus also happens to be a huge WoW fan, with a big collection of WoW based items like miniatures and TCG cards! He also sent us a picture of one of his collection stands. Truly a beautiful collection!
