With the reveal of the Dragonflight Monk talent trees, our Windwalker Monk writer Babylonius provides initial reactions and thoughts on this revamped system. We break down the Monk talent trees, discussing the new talents and providing some sample builds. Join us as we predict how this class could play in Dragonflight!

A few weeks ago, we got our first looks at the Monk talent tree and, infinitely more importantly, the Windwalker talent tree. Since then we've seen one round of changes to the Windwalker tree, so I'll be discussing the changes that have happened and what may yet be to come. If you'd like my initial impressions of the talents from the day they came out, you can check out

Monk Dragonflight Class Talents
What’s New?
There is not much that counts as "new" in the Monk or Windwalker talent tree, as most of the things that are there existed somewhere else previously. For Windwalkers, the few relevant new things are talents such as
Pugni Risonanti
,
Evocazione: Statua della Tigre Bianca
,
Rimbalzo Indietro
,
Versamento Generoso
,
Vicino al Cuore
, and access to
Evocazione: Statua dello Yak Nero
. Most of these provide some raid/party buffs and additional utility, which is an area that Windwalker has struggled with in past years. On the topic of past utility,
Impeto
returns as a talent that is potentially VERY skippable, as it's currently a very small number and competes with more useful talents.
Impactful Talents
Evocazione: Statua della Tigre Bianca
and
Pugni Risonanti
could end up being impactful, but that will depend entirely on tuning and balancing.
If you're looking for a single talent that may have the largest impact, then look no further than
Fuga dalla Realtà
. This, now-talent, started off as a Shadowlands Legendary that had pretty much no use for Windwalkers in any content. However, now that it's just a talent you can take, it is ENORMOUSLY beneficial with a TON of fun possibilities. Whether you use it to
Trascendenza
all over the place, in and out of mechanics, or to spam yourself with buffed heals, the potential is larger than any other talent in the tree, by a longshot.
New Utility/Skills
The big-ticket talents are the fact that Windwalker has access to
Dispersione della Magia
,
Diminuzione del Dolore
, AND
Birra Fortificante
, although the latter requires you to talent into
Paralisi
, which doesn't make a ton of sense and will hopefully be changed in the future. This potential for three large defensive CDs, combined with increased self-healing from
Vivificazione Migliorata
,
Vivificazione Vivace
, and
Fuga dalla Realtà
, may make Windwalkers incredibly durable and self-reliant, which is something that Windwalker has had in the past, but now may have even more.
In addition to adding more defensives to an already full defensive kit, Monks can now, and always will, talent into
Brama della Tigre
to compliment
Calcio Volante della Serpe
. You can also talent into an additional charge of Roll via
Capriola
, and more movement through the choice node of
Fluidità
/
Dardo del Chi
. Although its unlikely that you will take all of these movement talents, just like it's unlikely you will need to take all the above defensive talents all the time, it will be very nice to be able to when you need to.
Lastly, the biggest "utility" that Windwalkers gain comes in the way of the more "Brewmaster" side of the talent tree in
Versamento Generoso
,
Rimbalzo Indietro
, and, the legend Dave himself,
Evocazione: Statua dello Yak Nero
.
Evocazione: Statua dello Yak Nero
may see limited use, but undeniable niche usefulness when it can help, such as AOE taunting a large group to a specific point.
Rimbalzo Indietro
's benefit will depend on how it works and if it reduces the damage of the initial hit that triggers it, but automatic damage reduction is rarely bad.
Versamento Generoso
is the real winner where 4% avoidance to hit melee and, in many cases, the tanks, can result in a decent amount of damage reduction. Many mechanics that don't seem like they are traditional AOE are still reduced by Avoidance, so bringing passive damage reduction to the melee/tank group is going to be useful almost all the time.
Monk Dragonflight Talent Tree - First Impressions
While the bottom half of the tree is laid out nicely, for the most part, the top half leaves something to be desired. For Windwalkers you'll lean mostly to the right and middle of the tree, as the left is mostly Mistweaver-themed stuff, which isn't a problem. The problem lies in the gatekeeping of
Paralisi
and
Paralisi Migliorata
to get to
Birra Fortificante
, and all of those gatekeeping the use of
Espulsione del Dolore
.
Paralisi
is an ability that sees a decent amount of usefulness, but it tends to be one of the "lesser" CCs in M+ due to its range and rarely used in Raids due to limited opportunities. Having it lock down the whole right side of the tree feels like you need to just waste a few talents you may never see the benefit of to get the talents that you want.
The other structure issue is locking
Ferocia di Xuen
, a talent that you'll certainly want to grab, behind either
Disintossicazione
or
Paralisi
and
Inabilitazione
. You'll almost certainly take
Disintossicazione
as its more likely to be of use, but it is still not always useful.
Overall
While some of my above "first impressions" are generally negative, they are generally overshadowed by my excitement over the potential defensive, movement, and utility abilities, and the existence of
Fuga dalla Realtà
, even though I'm the world's worst
Trascendenza
user. There are certainly structural concerns, and maybe too many cool talents with not enough points to spend, but Windwalkers absolutely come out ahead.
If I had to assume a "standard build", it would look like this:

Notable Talents
The first talent that most people will notice is
Assalto del Signore del Vento
, which is one that people have been asking for since it left at the end of Legion. People will be very happy to see it back, and it should provide some nice single target focused damage.
Personally, the biggest thing that I am excited for is the level of interconnectivity that exists in the talents. For a long time, many people have hearkened back to Tomb of Sargeras where Windwalker had a higher level of flow between its abilities. This was brought back with
Tenuta Feroce di Xuen
, but it was not strong to be considered against the juggernaut of
Delizia dell'Invocatore
. Now that they are generally not competing, Windwalkers can enjoy many abilities that effect others, which should bring an increase in a feeling of flow and value of all the buttons.
Mossa Combinata
was out in the first iteration of the talent tree, which brought many cheers, but has since returned, which has brought many jeers. It is clear that much of the talent tree is designed to try and bring value to all abilities so that Windwalkers are not dropping core abilities in certain situations, but
Mossa Combinata
is a historically annoying way of "promoting" playing to benefit the Windwalker Mastery.
Windwalker Dragonflight Spec Talents - First Impressions
My first impression of the Windwalker talent tree was that of much excitement. While the return of
Mossa Combinata
has lessened that a bit, and I have things that I'd like to see changed, the biggest thing that jumped out to me was the clear effort, by Blizzard, to address Windwalker's lack of single target power. Obviously more will come from balancing and tuning than from just looking at the trees, but this was something that was important to me for the health of the spec. Between the single target-focused abilities and the interconnectivity of many of the talents, I am very excited for how it will play once it is all working correctly.
However, there are some obvious gripes.
Accensione di Giada
appears to have gotten lost and ended up on the wrong side of the tree. To really use this talent well, you also want to talent into
Danza di Chi-Ji
so that you don't have to use any Chi to get the damage from
Accensione di Giada
. It isn't something that is horrible or disruptive, just odd.
The choice of
Urto di Silfaglia
instead of
Armi dell'Ordine
is another head scratcher. It is possible that
Armi dell'Ordine
's functionality will replace what we currently have in
Armi dell'Ordine
, but that remains to be seen. Because
Delizia dell'Invocatore
exists in the tree,
Armi dell'Ordine
could come in and continue the trend of connected abilities.
Urto di Silfaglia
punishes the movement that Windwalkers have in such ample supply.
Lastly, and I know I am not alone in this even though it may be a divisive topic, but I think
Birra di Polvere d'Ossa
is a detrimental tool for Windwalkers to have. It promotes ignoring Mastery to spam
Calcio Rotante della Gru
and tosses more RNG to a spec that, historically, is very very low on the RNG-scale. I know its great to see the big damage in AOE, but I think it comes at a cost of negative play.
Windwaker Monk Talent Tree Example: Raiding
Its WAY too early to know how strong Windwalkers will be in Dragonflight, and talents are only part of that. However, it doesn't stop people from speculating, so let me do a little bit of that.
Windwalker has, historically, excelled at large scale AOE, and with the talents that we have access too, that is unlikely to change. However, that's a bit boring, in my opinion; Windwalker has been so good at it for so long, and languished in single target exile, I want to focus on that. Here is what I think a "single target" talent setup may look like:
I believe that this setup will give the Windwalker the most tools and damage for focus on boss damage, something that Windwalker has been severely lacking for years. In addition to the shifted focus for single target damage, the Class tree allows Windwalkers to bring an increase in personal survivability and raid utility.
There are some easy swaps, such as taking out 1 point in
Fuga dalla Realtà
, in the class tree, for
Compressione Tracheale
if you need an interrupt. Another swap may be dropping
Assalti Meridiani
and
Tocco Proibito del Maestro Nascosto
depending on how
Tocco della Morte
works in that situation. This would allow you to pick up
Urto di Giadafulgida
and its subsequent talents, especially on a fight that doesn't see very much movement.
Conclusion
Obviously there's more changes to come, and a whole slew of tuning and balancing and theorycrafting still needing to happen before we get to Dragonflight's release. However, this talent tree looks to keep what currently makes Windwalkers great at what its great at, while providing numerous tools to help be great at other things too. Overall, even with the nit picks and minor tweaks, the talent trees benefit Windwalkers greatly and are the reason that many people are hyped for Windwalkers in Dragonflight.
