The Sungrass is Always Greener on the Other Side of the Zone

My faction choice has historically been
a little biased
. My first character was a Dwarven Hunter that reached the ripe old level of 42 in the original game before I got tired of getting ganked in
by bored Horde (which would make a good name for a guild, in my opinion). I also rolled a Dwarven Rogue as part of
a Three Stooges joke
. He was 'Cheatem'. I thought the name to be an apt one.
Regardless, most of my experience has been on the Horde side of the fence. I know that to be the case with Malgayne as well, so when I saw him exclaim
For The Horde...?
, the unsureness of his statement made me wonder if he was thinking of becoming a turncoat. So, I read his post. What did I learn? Malgayne suffers from the same syndrome that a lot of my friends do from time to time: Faction Envy.
Now, I don't particularly have any strong attraction to either faction. I ended up with the Horde because that's where all of my friends were playing. However, I am exposed to a large amount of complaints from people who play both sides of the field. I remember back in the heyday of AV where the largest complaint was how it was unbalanced to the Alliance because of the First Aid Hut exploit. I remember complaints on how it always seemed like the Horde were shacking up in huts or decrepit buildings in their towns while the Alliance had well-maintained log cabins, castles, or
large cities built into the side of mountains
. They have a
that connects two of their capital cities. The Horde? Dirigibles.
I have a friend who was in the beta for WotLK. He expressed dismay when he saw that Stormwind received the addition of a huge harbor from which you could travel to Northrend. The Horde received... another zeppelin tower.
I think people are natually pre-disposed to looking at the other side of the fence with awe. To this effect, I had to drop some science on my friend, and I will do the same here.
The Horde have zeppelins, but that's not all we have. We can also take boats between Rachet and Booty Bay. Can the Alliance take a zeppelin anywhere? No. What happens if you have a raid of Alliance who just attacked Orgrimmar, and they want to attack The Undercity? Can they just take a convenient tram betweem the insides of both towns? No. In fact, I prefer the zeppelin tower. There was more than one occasion where I mind-controlled an Alliance player on the zeppelin and walked him off of it into fatigue water. Can you do that on the Tram? No.
Do you know how the Alliance are ferried into Northrend in the
? They take a boat through a fjord channel. The first time through, this is awesome. You see a burning boat hanging from the cliffs. The boat enters this harbor, does a loop through a cave, then drops you off at the dock. When you realize that you had passed that dock when you got into the harbor and the boat decided to take an extra minute to give you a tour of the area, then realize this will happen
EVERY SINGLE TIME
you take the boat, you are less than enthused. What happens with the Horde? That 'annoying, lame' zep flies right to the zep tower. You jump off, and you're right there in the middle of Vengeance Landing. Speaking of Vengeance Landing, the undead now no longer live in squalor. They live in what looks like a series of buildings in which Dr. Frankenstein would take up residence. That's pretty awesome, if you ask me. Warsong Hold speaks for itself. What did the Alliance get? Another castle! Woo!
You see my point. I think there are parts of both Factions that are going to be looked upon with envy by the other side. As for me, I have learned to embrace my faction. Sometimes I think grinding rep would be easier as a human, but then I think about how much fun I have eating corpses in PvP battlegrounds... and it all goes away.
