We're back again with another lore spotlight with Nobbel87! Last week we covered the
story of Patch 8.3
, and now with the new raid opening, we have the story of
Ny'alotha
. Read about the lore behind every boss and of course, some thoughts on the N'Zoth ending.
We'll supplement Nobbel's script with links to our Ny'alotha strategy guides and related database pages so you can experience the content for yourself.
Wrathion the Black Emperor
Hello everyone! Last week we talked about our road into Ny’alotha the sleeping city. With the Old God N’zoth set free at the end of 8.2, the city is now waking up and trying to claw its way into our reality. It nearly succeeded in the Chamber of Heart, but Keeper Ra’s heroic sacrifice prevented Azeroth’s doom, at the cost of losing him to Ny’alotha. Our plan of attack is to place anchors within Ny’alotha which we can use to target our weapon at, or more accurately, the weapons left behind by the Titans. The Forge of Origination in Uldum powered up by the Engine of Nalak’sha run through the Chamber of Heart should give us the power to vanquish N’zoth. Going into his realm gives N’zoth the homefield advantage and if OldGgods have taught us anything, it’s that they’re really good at corrupting and driving people crazy.
That’s where Wrathion comes in, protecting us with a beautiful new cloak forged out of the knowledge and power stolen from Horrific Visions. Lets hope that it’s going to be enough to hold on to our sanity. Lets venture beyond the veil of our reality and step into Ny’alotha...
“Come my chosen. Witness the fate of this world. Behold the one who shall herald its coming.”
“My dear friends. A wondrous honor has been bestowed upon you. The chance to embrace your destiny as I have. N”Zoth has shown me the inevitable truth. That to save Azeroth, we must accept his gift. Kneel and serve. It is the only way.”
Well, that didn’t take long. Five minutes in and Wrathion has already been taken by the corruption while as we can see in the background, Azeroth isn’t doing too great. With his mind twisted by N’zoth, he believes that the only way he can truly defend Azeroth is to rule it in the Old God’s name. Like father, like son... the Black Prince now goes by the title of Black Emperor and tries to incinerate us for his new master. A proper dragon fight to kick off the raid.
“I learned that it doesn’t take much for my friends to believe I betrayed them. Champions, that vision was as much for me as it was for you. N’zoth wants us to believe that my corruption is inevitable. Doubt me if you must, but know that I will not rest until his smoldering corpse lies at my feet. ”
So yeah the first fight was just one of those Horrific Visions. Wrathion still firmly stands at our side.
Wrathion, the Black Emperor is a two phase encounter in the Ny'alotha raid. During phase one the party fights Wrathion directly, dealing with his simple yet dangerous "dragon mechanics". During phase two the party must destroy
Scheggia Crepitante
s against the clock to safely survive the next upcoming phase one.
Wrathion, the Black Emperor is the first boss of Ny'alotha. After defeating Wrathion, players may choose between the
Maut
and
Prophet Skitra
encounters. You can also pick up the raid skip quest

, to eventually skip from Wrathion to
Carapace of N'Zoth

Wrathion Strategy Guide
Wrathion has had an enigmatic presence in WoW's past expansions, making bold choices and complicated plans, such as his decision in MoP that the Alliance should take over the Horde to improve our chances at defeating the Burning Legion. Learn all about Wrathion's plans in our
Lore of Wrathion Overview
. If you'd like a closer look at his involvement in Battle for Azeroth, check out the

Maut
This is what Ny’alotha actually looks like and it’s designed in such a way that you can pretty much choose between which bosses you want to face first. Don’t worry though, no matter your choice there’s going to be a whole lot of trash to clear. In our case, we decided to go for Maut.
As the ancient aqir, a bug-like race that originate from the organic matter of the Old Gods, rose from the desert sands, their prophets set about the construction of an Obsidian Destroyer imbued with the essence of the Old Gods. Driven by an insatiable thirst for magic, Maut consumed the mana of its creators once it awoke and left their corpses to rot under the scorching sun of Uldum.
Maut might make you think back to Moam, one of the bosses of AQ20. This creation of the Aqir loves his mana and always hungers for more. Aim of the game is to prevent him from gaining that mana he desires and once his mana bar is full, hit him very hard when he turns to stone or else he will gain too much power.
Maut is a two phase encounter in the Ny'alotha raid which revolves around the bosses mana. During phase one, players need to correctly deal with mechanics and avoid abilities to reduce the rate in which the boss gains mana. During phase two, the raid needs to damage through the bosses mana bar whilst absorbing mana-granting orbs that are travelling towards the boss.
Maut is the second or third boss of Ny'alotha. After defeating Maut and Prophet Skitra, players may choose between the
Dark Inquisitor Xanesh
,
The Hivemind
,
Shad'har
and
Drest'agath
encounters.
Notable Maut loot includes the battle pet
Muar
as well as
Sk'shuul Vaz
with the
Pelle d'Ossidiana
corruption effect and
An'zig Vra
with the
Divoramento Vitalità
corruption effect.
Maut Strategy Guide
Prophet Skitra
A bit of backtracking and enjoying the view is in order as our next boss, Prophet Skitra, is on the opposite side. Just before the boss there are some Anubisath Sentinel adds which again calls back to Ahn’Qiraj. I was kinda expecting them to transfer their buffs upon death, but that didn’t happen.
A master of illusion, Skitra delights in terrorizing his victims as he breaks their perception of reality. Those who fail to see through his deceptions become lost in Ny’alotha for eternity. Assaulting the mind is what the Prophet loves to do and his major ability will look familiar to those who have taken on the first boss of AQ40.
Our heroes get split up into two different realms where the copies of Skitra are in different spots. You can find the real target by figuring out which copy is in the same location in both realms. Once it’s been located, it’s a simple as taking it out and regaining your sanity.
The Prophet Skitra is a two phase encounter in the Ny'alotha raid. During phase one players need to deal with a few simple yet dangerous mechanics, whilst in phase two they will need to play detective and talk to one another to work out which one of the bosses multiple illusion clones is actually the boss!
Prophet Skitra is the second or third boss of Ny'alotha. After defeating Maut and Prophet Skitra, players may choose between the Dark Inquisitor Xanesh, The Hivemind, Shad'har and Drest'agath encounters.
Notable Prophet Skitra loot includes
Arco Sinistro Sussurrante
with the corrupted effect
Verità Sussurrate
and
Testo Crittografato di Ny'alotha
needed for the Azerite Essence
Vuoto Informe
.
Prophet Skitra Strategy Guide
Dark Inquisitor Xanesh
Now we can make our way from the Annex of Prophecy up the elevator and through the door where finally the beauty of Ny’alotha is revealed to us. They’ve done a fantastic job with the skybox and the design of this place. We can see Vexiona flying about, different levels with different bosses to confront. The magnitude of N’zoth lurking in the background, it’s beautifully done.
To get those anchor points in place we’ll need to clear it out first. My team decided to go for Dark Inquisitor Xanesh first who’s hard at work in the ritual chamber where we run into an old friend...
Azshara was yoinked away at the end of the Eternal Palace raid after completing her mission of releasing the Old God N’Zoth. Looks like she had plans in mind of betraying the one who transforms her and her people into the naga, saving them from a watery death after losing the War of the Ancients. Few can resist the whispers of the Old Gods, but those who do, like Azshara, find themselves at the ‘mercy’ of Dark Inquisitor Xanesh. A cruel and sadistic torturer, Xanesh prides herself on slowly carving the sanity away from those in her charge until all that remains is unwavering devotion to N’zoth.
When Azshara agreed to N'Zoth's bargain, she made sure that it was as a queen and not a slave. All along she wanted to get rid of those that tried to rule her, get rid of N’zoth. The pain inflicted upon her now causes massive waves of void across the field. This is one of my favorite fights as you also get to play a little bit of footbal. We get a void orb and a goal, 3 players go out and manouver the orb without letting it touch anything else. We had raiders fight over who got to do it, a lot of fun and if done right, we release Azshara to see what she has to offer.
“We fulfilled our end of the bargain, Azshara. Now honor yours.”
“Mind your tone, whelpling. A queen keeps her promises. Listen closely, as I will only say this once. For all his bluster, N’Zoth was ever the weakest of his kin. One vestige of their power yet remains that can be turned against him. I would have driven this blade into his foul heart myself..had you not disrupted my plans. No matter. Xal’atath is yours, mortals. Strike true. Should your first blow fail, you will not survive to attempt another. Now go and do what you will. I tire of intermediaries and heralds. The true throne of power beckons, and I intend to claim it. ”
It’s Xal'atath, Blade of the Black Empire that she intended to use again N’Zoth, originally picked up by Shadow Priests during Legion to wield it as their artifact. Overloaded when sucking the corruption out of Sargeras’ blade and then rediscovered and brought to N’Zoth at the Crucible of Storms raid. Xal'atath now has a body and is still out there while the empty blade was brought back to Sylvanas who gave it to Nathanos as he guided us to Nazjatar. The queen of the naga split the waters and welcomed us into her domain.
Apperantly the blade then moved from Nathanos to the queen with the intend of striking out at N’Zoth. That never came to pass, we were a bit too much to handle but perhaps Wrathion will have better luck. Azhsara just teleports away, nobody really tries to stop her or hold her responble for what she has done over the millenia, but how else are we going to get a potential Naga Allied Race?! That throne of power she mentions is rather interesting. Is she going to compete with Sylvanas or does she know of other thrones to claim?
That’s a story for in the future, for now our path leads us to Vexiona...
Dark Inquisitor Xanesh is a single phase encounter in the Ny'alotha raid with a primary mechanic which forces 3 players to bounce a
Globo del Vuoto
around into a goal. If the orb hits the sides or any other obstacle, the raid takes massive damage! Whilst doing this you need to run from your flayed soul and dodge
Regina Azshara
's
Tormento
zones.
Dark Inquisitor Xanesh is a boss that is unlocked after defeating Maut and Prophet Skitra. After defeating Dark Inquisitor Xanesh, the Vexiona encounter is unlocked.
Notable Dark Inquisitor Xanesh loot includes
Vorzz Yoq'al
with the corruption effect
Rituale del Vuoto
.

Vexiona
Vexiona is a new kind of dragon that showed up with Battle for Azeroth, nicely in league with the Void. We’ve seen her go around trying to recruit or transform others into service to N’Zoth while here at the Twilight Landing, there seem to be plenty willing to surrender themselves to the Void.
Those loyal gain full access to the dark powers offered by N’Zoth. The dragon herself loves to bathe the field of battle in voidfire, but her death clears the way for our very first anchor.
Vexiona is a three phase encounter in the Ny'alotha raid. During phase one the raid fights Vexiona directly whilst dealing with powerful adds she summons from
Varco Oscuro
s. After 80 seconds she enters phase two and soars into the sky, barraging the raid with her powerful
Decimatore del Crepuscolo
breath three times before landing and resuming phase one. Phase three begins when she reaches 40% health and the raid must finish her off quickly before she applies too many stacks of
Corruzione del Vuoto
.
Vexiona is a boss that is unlocked after defeating Dark Inquisitor Xanesh. After defeating Il'gynoth, Ra-den and Vexiona, the Carapace of N'zoth encounter is unlocked.
Notable Vexiona loot includes
Testo Crittografato di Ny'alotha
which is needed for the
Vuoto Informe
Azerite Essence.
Vexiona Strategy Guide
Vexiona is previously seen during the
Heart of Azeroth Essence questline
introduced in Patch 8.2, where she is making an aggressive attack against the Red Dragonflight settlement of Vermillion Redoubt. After the Cataclysm, it was believed that the Twilight Dragonflight was, if not entirely, nearly extinct, but the dragonflight is on the rise once more in recent expansions, detailed in our
lore recap
. You can even acquire the
Draghetto del Crepuscolo
battle pet as of 8.2.
The Hivemind
Onwards towards the hive and some of the greatest Aqir forces N’Zoth’s army holds.
Locked in a contest of wills, the generals Ka’zir and Tek’ris constantly vie for dominance over their fellow Aqir. As they wrest control away from one another, the hive shifts its tactics and obeys each of their commands with fervent loyalty. This swapping of tactics involves different abilities and different insectoids that swarm the fight. It also dictates if you want to tank the bosses close together or far apart.
The Hivemind is a single phase encounter which pits two bosses (Ka'zir and Tek'ris) against the raid in Ny'alotha. The bosses do not share a health pool and need to die within a short time of one another. Throughout the fight the bosses will need to be positioned close or far apart to prevent the
Velo dell'Ombra
from triggering. The raid needs to be prepared to deal with large waves of adds, so get your AoE specs ready!
The Hivemind is a boss that is unlocked after defeating Maut and Prophet Skitra. After defeating the Hivemind, the Ra-den encounter is unlocked.
Notable Hivemind loot includes the battle pets
Prole dell'Alveare Aqir
and
Ra'kim
, as well as the weapon
Qwor N'lyeth
which comes with the corruption effect
Vuoto Riecheggiante
.
This boss shares a name with the
Hivemind Secret
, a mount added during Tides of Vengeance that requires many elaborate steps to acquire.
Hivemind Strategy Guide
Ra-den the Despoiled
Either way the Hive can not stand in our way of finally reaching Ra-den at the Terrace of Desolation.
"“Error: Corruption at critical levels. Anchor placement terminated.”
“Ra-den?! It cannot be! You’re a servant of the titans, of Azeroth herself!”
“N’Zoth opened my eyes to his great truth. He freed me from the narrow confines of the titans’ path. Come. I will reveal the master’s glory and liberate you from darkness!”
This is sadly not a horrific vision, this is a brutal reality. Ra-den the Despoiled has been corrupted by N’Zoth and some of you wondered why Azshara was able to resist while a creation of the Titans could not. That has to do with Ra-den’s history.
He hasn’t an easy life, being one of the Keepers who realized that their creators were struck down by Sargeras. His depression and isolation were interrupted by Lei-Shen who stole his powers and imprisoned Ra beneath the land of Pandaria. For millenia he rotted away, listening to the shrieks of the tormented, feeling that corruption locked away beneath the world. Only because of our actions, and maybe a bit of MOTHER, was he able to believe there was hope out there. Maybe someone should have told him that the Titans are actually back now, but regardless, that darkness rooted in his heart is what N’Zoth prayed upon. Now his mighty powers, very similar abilities he used during the Throne of Thunder encounter, are turned against us and we have no choice but to put him out of his misery.
“Perhaps...a glimmer...can repel...the dark...”
Poor Ra-den, wasn’t even able to spend some time with MOTHER. She doesn’t even acknowledge that he perished.
Ra-den the Despoiled is a two phase encounter which shares many mechanics and abilities to his previous incantation found in the Throne of Thunder. During phase one the boss will alternate between being
Potenziato dalla Vita
and
Vuoto Potenziato
, forcing the raid to counter different sets of mechanics based on the empowerment he has. Phase two is a race to the finish, as the raid needs to kill the boss before his outgoing damage becomes too strong for the healers to counter!
Ra-den is a boss that is unlocked after defeating The Hivemind. After defeating Il'gynoth, Ra-den and Vexiona, the Carapace of N'zoth encounter is unlocked.
Notable Ra-den loot includes the battle pet
Anubisath Sfregiato dal Vuoto
, the trinket set
Scheggia Titanica Distorta dal Vuoto
and
Scheggia Titanica Caricata di Vita
for
Potenziamento Titanico
, and the weapon
Carezza dell'Unguento
with corrupted effect
Sferzata del Vuoto
.
Ra-den Strategy Guide
We initially encountered
Ra-Den
as a Heroic-only, limited-attempt boss in the
Regno del Tuono
raid, back when he was captured by Lei-Shen. At the start of the fight, he believed Azeroth to be a "twisted world beyond redemption" but upon defeat, he acknowledges that we have "earned the right to try" to "correct this doomed course." Many of his abilities are similar; in Throne of Thunder Ra-den can receive different buffs through
Infuso d'Animum
and
Infuso di Vita
, while in Ny'alotha, he alternates between
Vuoto Potenziato
and
Potenziato dalla Vita
,
While he then vanished for several expansions, we encountered
Pugno di Ra-Den
in Legion, Highkeeper Ra's weapon gifted to him by Aman'Thul in the War against the Black Empire. Elemental Shaman can
acquire this artifact weapon
and learn more about Ra-den in the
related artifact book
.
Ra-den then
returns to the narrative
in Patch 8.3, as he works together with MOTHER and the player in Vale of Eternal Blossoms, before heroically sacrificing himself.
Shad’har the insatiable
Ah well, another anchor placed. Time for a deep dive into the Maw of Gor’ma with Shad’har the insatiable first up.
“You enter as parasites, but will feed my perfection.”
That is indeed Il’gynoth whispering to us. Those that played during Legion will remember running into him during the Emerald Nightmare raid. Back then he was part of the corruption of the Emerald Dream and dropping some delicious, mysterious whispers hinting at things for the future. As he said back then, he journeyed to Ny’alotha and will make his return--but he will show up in just a moment.
First up there’s Shad’har, one of N’Zoth’s most nightmarish creations. It feasts on the corrupted carcasses that the Old God’s minions discard into its domain. Tormented by ceaseless hunger, Shad’har’s body twists and mutates with every corpse it devours.
Shad'har the Insatiable is a three phase encounter in Ny'alotha in which the raid needs to deal with the different elements the boss embodies when he eats a material at the start of the phase. Single target damage is needed to defeat this patchwerk style encounter before the boss casts his abilities too often for the healers to deal with.
Shad'har is a boss that is unlocked after defeating Maut and Prophet Skitra. After defeating both Shad'har and Drest'agath, the Il'gynoth encounter is unlocked.
Shad'har Strategy Guide
Drest’agath
At the Warren of Decay we find a big old tentacle waiting for us. The grotesque amalgam of flesh known as Drest’agath slumbered beneath Ny’alotha for millennia until being awakened by N’Zoth’s return.
Now she rises like a revolting boil, ready to burst and spread her vile pestilence across Azeroth. You might not think it, but this boss is indeed a she and major abilities used by the big tentacle in the middle are copied by the others around the room. You can’t even hurt Drest’agath in a normal way. Only by absorbing the darkness left behind by its appendages do we get a small window of opportunity to get rid of the ancient corruption.
Drest'agath is a single phase encounter in Ny'alotha in which the raid has to fight multiple tentacles that spawn in waves throughout the fight. Players need to kill adds to gain the
Icore Infuso di Vuoto
debuff, which allows them to bypass Drest'agath's
Rigenerazione Aberrante
healing. Co-ordination and a good understanding of boss mechanics are key to countering and defeating this difficult encounter.
Drest'agath is a boss that is unlocked after defeating Maut and Prophet Skitra. After defeating both Shad'har and Drest'agath, the Il'gynoth encounter is unlocked.
Notable Drest'agath loot includes the
Mar'kowa, il Trapassamente
weapon with the
Lampo di Consapevolezza
corrupted effect.
Drest'agath Strategy Guide
Il'gynoth, Corruption Reborn
Why hello again Il’gynoth, Corruption Reborn. This, we can only assume, is his true form. Fused with the city’s architecture it spreads across the Black Empire like a creeping infestation. As Il’gynoth’s corrupting flesh grows ever larger, so does its power as we find out throughout the fight since there are massive blobs of corruption hidden within the walls. These are almost as large as Il’gynoth himself was during the Emerald Nightmare raid, and now we have to confront him with N’Zoth peeking in and dropping void on the floor. One by one we take out his organs until even Il’gynoth himself is forced to submit, dropping one final interesting line...
“Those who pass beyond...shall drown...in the dark.”
Considering the cryptic whispers we’ve gotten in the past, perhaps he’s referring to the upcoming expansion and the souls of the fallen drowning in the maw... Who knows, the whispers have been a ton of fun to speculate about and even now can still be applied to different things.
Il'gynoth, Corruption Reborn is a two phase encounter in the Ny'alotha Raid. During phase one the raid must fight Il'gynoth directly, which involves kiting his gaze spells and dodging his frontal beam. Once defeated, the raid enters phase two, where they must defeat one of three
Organo della Corruzione
enemies whilst spreading out with debuffs. Once an organ dies, phase one starts over again. This is then repeated until all three organs are dead and Il'gynoth has been defeated for the fourth time.
Il'gynoth is a boss that is unlocked after defeating Drest'agath and Shad'har. After defeating Il'gynoth, Ra-den and Vexiona, the Carapace of N'zoth encounter is unlocked.
Notable Il'gynoth loot includes
Bulbo Oculare di Il'gynoth
with the
Verità Ineffabile
corruption effect and
Testo Crittografato di Ny'alotha
needed for the Azerite Essence
Vuoto Informe
.
Il'gynoth Strategy Guide
Il'gynoth also has a new set of whispers that could hint at future lore developments in WoW. Check out our
complete analysis
of these whispers--our speculation ranges from Calia Menethil to Helya.
Before the last shadow falls, the Father of Sleep shall savor his feast.
The golden one claims a vacant throne. The crown of light will bring only darkness.
When their mistress beckons, nine ravens take flight. Each seeks a prize to earn her favor.
The vassal of life disguises treachery. Beware the eyes of green.
Five lanterns, now darkened. The flame they seek will light the masters' way.
The blind queen wields a scepter of bone. From the deep she calls forth doom.
The cunning ones kneel before six masters, but serve only one.
Going back further, we also have a strategy guide to
Il'gynoth in the Emerald Nightmare
. Shadow Priests may still be interested in killing Il'gynoth for the
Artiglio di N'zoth
artifact appearance. Much has been made of Il'gynoth's Legion whispers, many of which
came true in Rise of Azshara
.
Carapace of N'Zoth
Even deeper we go, one last portal to jump one, one more level and as we look up, we can see how massive N’Zoth truly is. Not surprising when someone like Yogg-Saron has been rumored to be as big as Northrend itself. The art department definitely delivered, let's see if Wrathion can do the same:
The cutscene is really coo; and it appears that Xal'atath, Blade of the Black Empire is destroyed while carving our entrance into the Carapace. The blade's history goes as far back as the days of the Black Empire, the days the Old Gods ruled the world, so in essence we are using an artifact of their own making to hurt them. Its origin is described in the lore books back from Legion.
Some say that it might be a forgotten old god who was consumed by its kin in the early days of the black empire. Other theories state that Xal'atath is the claw of Y’shaarj, ripped from the old god’s monstrous form and bestowed upon its servants for use in ritual sacrifices. We don’t know for certain at this point and all the same, the blade seems to be gone after Wrathion used it, but Xal'atath is still out there...somewhere...
You might have noticed how we’ve been dodging massive tentacles while dancing with the Fury of N’zoth. At the center of Ny’alotha stands a dread mountain of flesh, teeming with eyes and tendrils of unfettered corruption. Madness itself seeps from the writhing mass, eroding the sanity of all who approach it. This is the heart of the Black Empire, N’zoth’s seat of power, the body of a god. Any who dare to look upon it would lose themselves to madness but we have been preparing ourselves. The cloak is of great use and Wrathion holds us together while we get rid of the Horrific Hemorhages and beat down the Fury of N’Zoth itself.
Carapace of N'zoth is a three phase encounter in which the raid must defeat the
Furia di N'zoth
to beat the boss. The raid needs to keep their Sanity high throughout the fight, as loosing all sanity will charm the player permanently into a
Servitore di N'zoth
, quickly leading to their demise. Phase one has the raid fighting tentacles outside the carapace of N'zoth. Phases two and three have the raid venture deeper into the carapace, chasing down the
Furia di N'zoth
as it tries to retreat!
The Carapace of N'zoth encounter is unlocked after defeating Il'gynoth, Ra-den and Vexiona. After defeating Carapace of N'Zoth, you unlock the final encounter of the raid, N'Zoth himself!
Notable Carapace of N'Zoth loot includes the weapon
Scheggia dell'Impero Nero
with the
Appendice Distorta
corruption effect and the weapon
Shgla'yos, Malignità Astrale
with the
Stelle Infinite
corruption effect. Carapace of N'Zoth and N'Zoth loot is 10 ilvls higher than loot from the other ten Ny'alotha bosses.
Carapace of N'Zoth Strategy Guide
As for
Xal'atath
, she was split from the blade in Patch 8.1.5, in the build-up to the
Crucible of Storms Raid
. At the end of this questline, N'Zoth thanks Xal'atath for bringing us to her (while referring to us as the Opener, the Bring of Truths, and the Torch the Lights the Way), and frees Xal'atath to follow her own fate, demanding her to leave the dagger with the Old God.
And while the Legion expansion is over, Shadow Priests may be interested in collecting the artifact weapon to learn more about the lore, hear
Xal'atath's whispers
, and unlock many
transmog appearances
.
N'Zoth the Corruptor
This is the chamber, the core of it all where, despite many tentacles trying to squish us, the Fury of N’zoth goes down and the real Old God comes out to play. Once again a big thank you to Squishei for getting these recordings out there as my raid team is still making its way here.
“Every war waged. Every trial overcome. Lead you here. To me.”
“My vision shall be made real. Complete the circle. Open the way.”
“For an old god who claims to see everything, you are blind for the threat before you.”
Like with Yogg-Saron, N’Zoth invites us closer in and while stepping through his portals and leaving our bodies behind, he drops some interesting stuff. The Old God flaunting his amazing achievements and power in front of us. Like the corruption of Deathwing and his Black Dragonflight which caused so much devastation, in a little expansion called the Cataclysm which transformed the surface of the world. Yeah that was Deathwing in order of N’Zoth.
N'Zoth also reveals the bargain between Sylvanas and Azshara, which betrayed both the player and the Old God:
Azshara: We have a bargain, then. I will bring both fleets crashing to the ocean floor, and your champion will deliver the dagger to me.
Sylvanas: And in turn, you will have the key required to free the Old God from his bonds... and leave him vulnerable.
Azshara: You wound me, Warchief. After all, I am as dedicated to my master as you are to your subjects.
Sylvanas: Indeed. Just be certain that once you have what you need, you dispose of your guests. Let none of the "heroes" escape.
Azshara: I admire your ruthlessness, Windrunner. It seems our interests are aligned... at present.
Sylvanas: At present.
Azshara: Treacherous Banshee! Do you think I am blind to the darkness you seek to unleash?
The Horde picked up Xal'atath and brought it to their warchief. Sylvanas then traded the blade to Azshara in exchange for her help in getting rid of us. Azshara planned to use it against N’Zoth but the old god was aware of this, wanted her to believe she was in control while ultimately, he was free of his chains and she was tormented in Ny’alotha. The darkness Azshara is aware of, that would be the events of Shadowlands coming in the future.
The forge needs some time to the charge while N’Zoth sets his eyes on his true prize. The very reason why the Void Lords shot out all these Old Gods, the total corruption of Azeroth’s titan spirit. On Mythic difficulty, the final phase is a bit different as Magni and MOTHER begin unleashing the fury of the Forge of Origination to put an end to the Corruptor’s plans...
Or, so they hope
. Hopefully we’ll see a cool new phase during the mythic race, but storywise I have my doubts we’ll see many changes considering the end quest and end dialogue is still going to be the same for everyone, but hey who knows...they might surprise us!
N'zoth the Corruptor is a three phase encounter in Ny'alotha in which the raid must keep their Sanity above 0 at all times, otherwise they'll become Servants of N'zoth! During phase one, players must defeated
Psichicus
in the Mind Realm, dragging him from synapse to synapse as to apply big damage taken debuffs on him. During phase two, players need to fight waves of tentacles whilst halves of the raid take turns at entering the Mind Realm and repeating what they did in phase one. Phase three has the raid race to the end, as they need to defeat N'zoth before his Thought Harvester adds drain too much Sanity!

Ending of N'Zoth and Ny'alotha
We did it champions, our hard work paid off. The Forge’s power, a gift from the Titans, has been turned against N’Zoth and the threat of Ny’alotha is gone for good. The Old God's forces did hit the Chamber quite hard so they need to get some repairing done, but apparently she’s now free from the grasp of the Old God. That is where the story of Ny’alotha, the Waking city and the story of Battle for Azeroth ends.
I’ve done a reaction video on the subject, but in short, in my opinion, this story deserved a lot more time to breathe. For the first time since the days of the Titans we saw an Old God released from its prison but its effects are limited. Where during the Cataclysm we saw Deathwing rock the world and change its surface, a character working under N’zoth, now the Old God himself can barely manipulate two zones. Granted, he was the weakest of the Old Gods, but it’s not like we catch him by surprise or unprepared.
Story ideas like Xal'atath, Alleria and the Void Elves are unused. Ra-den goes from depressed to heroically sacrificing himself to serving N’zoth and being killed off very quickly. It needed more time than just a patch to truly grasp the magnitude of N'Zoth unleashed. Having Azeroth free of the Old God corruption is also interesting since in the past it was more about pushing their physical manifestations back into their prisons, but apparently we actually completely removed all of them. Makes you wonder why the titans and their creations themselves couldn’t just take care of them this way. Unless all of this was just a vision and N’zoth is still out there, slowly corrupting our minds. Making us farm islands over and over again for his own sick amusement.
Below you can check out Nobbel's reaction video, as well as his recent guest appearance on Wowhead Weekly that also discussed the ending of the raid.
Another unacknowledged plot point is the Wound in the World and the destruction caused by Azerite. Sargeras' sword remains in Silithus and there's no mention of it further in the story. The initial wound caused by the sword led to Azerite, the blood of Azeroth, which ushered in war and destruction. Azerite was used to power our war machines in early Battle for Azeroth, including the war machinery used to burn Teldrassil. Ashvane used Azerite for her explosives in the Kul Tiras storyline, we spend most of Battle for Azeroth fighting across islands for Azerite, Azshara manipulated Magni by using our Hearts of Azeroth to free N'Zoth, Sylvanas felt like a goddess when first encountering Azerite...However, none of this is touched upon in the final cutscene, which simply takes a heroic angle, thanking us for being a true champion of Azeroth.
Leading up to Patch 8.3, there were a few Blizzard interviews which touched upon the continuing presence of the Void and the powerful Void Lords, so perhaps they will play a role in a future expansion and continue the story of N'Zoth. Here's an example from
Wowhead's own interview
:
Based off PTR Datamined Dialogue from Alleria, it states that even though we "Defeat N'Zoth" she can still hear the whispers and they seem even stronger. Is it the Old Gods whispers or something else?
Steve: As I mentioned earlier, the Old Gods are rooted in the Void, they're an infestation sent by the Void and the Void is all about possibilities. It's what differentiates itself from all the other cosmic powers like the Light which sees one true path; the Void sees all these infinite possibilities. To the Void all of these possibilities are real. So Whispers are kind of a natural manifestation that mortals can kind of perceive because all those possibilities can take the form of different voices. So a question to ask yourself is were the Old Gods the conduits for these many voices or were the voices from something greater? That's something that Alleria will have to discover for herself as well as other inhabitants of Azeroth.
What happens to Xal'atath and what does she think of us defeating N'Zoth (if we get to that point)?
Steve: We had a lot of fun with the Xal'atath questline, that was one of the most memorable artifacts of Legion. It had ties to the Old Gods and was voiced by the great Claudia Christian and really made that weapon have a personality that players really gravitated to. To be able to revisit her and break out the personality from the Blade in some of those earlier questlines was a lot of fun. I certainly think that Xal'atath as an entity is something that will definitely surface again. She left us and was very certain that she would see us again and that is something that we very much look forward to playing out. It was a lot of fun.

Specialization Tips and Top Builds
Boss guides are great, but some players just want to know what talents, gear, azerite, tricks they should use to have the best chance of success in the new raid, and we have you covered with our Ny'alotha Raid Tips pages. Each specialization has a page dedicated to optimizing its performance within the new raid, including talent recommendations, gear advice, and the Top Builds widget, courtesy of Warcraft Logs. Once players start defeating bosses in the new raid, the Top Builds widget will automatically compile talents and Azerite traits used by the top-performing players for each spec, giving you an idea of what most successful players are doing inside the raid.
We'll be revisiting these pages to add new tips and tricks as strategies are formed and once Mythic difficulty releases next week, so check back frequently! You can keep an eye out for changes and updates by checking the Changelog at the top of each page.
Once players start defeating bosses within Ny'alotha, the Top Builds widget will automatically update like this. Keep in mind that end of tier bosses and underrepresented specs may fill in slower than others!
You can also see top builds alongside our regular
talent calculator
.
Where does it come from?
We use the
