Shadowlands Patch 9.2 Maldraxxus Coliseum Arena - Thoughts and Opinions
17/02/2022 alle 23:58
With Shadowlands Patch 9.2 comes the release of a highly anticipated new arena map, Maldraxxus Coliseum. Based on the Theater of Pain, Maldraxxus Coliseum has recently been added to the PTR for testing. We sent our Shadow Priest PvP writer, Xot, to try it out and take a look at the pros and cons of this new arena map. The mysterious Enigma Arena from Zereth Mortis will be
released at a later date
The Maldraxxus Coliseum
For eons, the Necrolords of Maldraxxus honed their craft at the Maldraxxus Coliseum in the Theater of Pain. Now the Arena is open to any would-be challengers—and there's no shortage of champions willing to test their mettle. Prove yourself worthy. Only the strong will survive.
The Maldraxxus Coliseum is situated in the center of Maldraxxus. Observant players will recognize the arena map from the 'Amateur Night' world quest where you're required to slay two arena opponents.
Whilst loading in you'll be met with an initial preview of how the arena looks, having a pentagon shaped center with the distinct square pillars - which is very similar to Tol'viron Arena, but that's where the similarities end.
The first thing you'll notice once inside, and one of the main differences when compared to other arena maps in the pool, is the noticeably large starting area which can be utilized once the match begins. This brings a very unique dynamic to the map, giving caster DPS somewhere to stand when up against melee damage dealers, and giving the melee DPS and their healer no reliable or nearby line of sight.
As for the center of the map, the nearest comparison would be a slightly more condensed version of the Legion arena Ashamane's Fall.
Unlike Ashamane's Fall however, all three pillars are square and exactly the same size - similar to the pillars you would find on Empyrean Domain but slightly larger.
Observant players will also notice that atop the stairs there are two NPCs. The first of which is
which pays homage to Brian Holinka who is currently Lead Combat Designer at Blizzard Entertainment and is involved in all combat related systems including PvP. Alongside him is
, a reference to Jared "Vhell" Colston - a former World of Warcraft shoutcaster and current Blizzard Employee.
Arena maps tend to lean slightly towards favouring melee cleaves or caster cleaves. For example, Hook Point is very small and condensed, giving caster cleaves nowhere to stand to forcibly drag the healer away from a pillar; whereas Tol'viron Arena, being the largest of all maps, gives casters plenty of opportunities to drag melee DPS and their healers away from the pillar.
The Maldraxxus Coliseum overall seems to be fairly balanced between both composition archetypes primarily due to its elongated starting areas. The center of the map itself however does seem to favor melee; with the pillar positioning and distance between them there isn't much open field. That being said, due to the pentagon design and having only three pillars situated in a triangular arrangement, it does leave some open space off to either side which can be great for casters not wanting to just play in the open area starting rooms. This is especially useful when facing opposing melee/caster/healer compositions.
Overall, The Maldraxxus Coliseum is a very welcome, balanced addition to the arena map pool and marks itself as the 13th map to be added to the rotation upon its arrival in Patch 9.2.
