Shadowlands Alpha - Ardenweald Storyline Summary and Playthrough

Ardenweald is the third zone that players will level in Shadowlands, lasting from level 54 to 57. In this post, we have a plot summary for the Ardenweald storyline, as well as a full rundown of the quests you need to do to complete the leveling storyline in the zone!

Summary of Each Chapter
The Ardenweald leveling storyline is currently divided in nine chapters, although the zone achievement,
, currently shows only six chapters. Below, we have a quick lore summary for each chapter based on the in-game questlog:
Welcome to Ardenweald
: We first arrive in Ardenweald and learn about the effects of the anima drought in the zone, including how groves and spirits are being chosen to live or die.
: We learn about wildseeds, seeds containing spirits preparing for rebirth, and come across a young wildseed containing a very special spirit.
: We learn about soulshape spirits and spriggans, mischievous creatures feeding on the anima in Ardenweald.
At the end of this chapter, you will learn your
Night Fae Covenant ability
: We visit one of the withering groves of Ardenweald and find possessed Night Fae stealing anima from these groves. After this, we find the Winter Queen for the first time but are not able to talk to her.
: We learn about the Wild Hunt, the military forces of Ardenweald, and how many of the previously seen possessed Night Fae were slain members of the Wild Hunt.
This is the Way
: The special wildseed we previously found is releasing nightmares and is shown to be much more powerful than previously seen wildseeds. We're forced to move to a bigger grove to obtain more anima to calm this wildseed.
During this chapter, you will learn the zone ability
, which transforms you into a Vulpin with increased movement speed for a few seconds.
The Fallen Tree
: By visiting another withering grove, we learn that the Drust are behind the anima drought in Ardenweald, attacking the groves of the zone in great numbers.
Visions of the Dreamer
: We learn that the special wildseed seen in the zone is holding the spirit of Ysera, slain during the Val'sharah questline in the beginning of Legion. The Drust are pushed back, but Ysera's wildseed is left mortally wounded as a result of their invasion.
Awaken the Dreamer
: We're finally granted an audience to the Winter Queen, who revives Ysera by binding her soul to Ardenweald. She declares our allegiance to our cause and sends us to Revendreth to seek Sire Denathrius, a master of anima extraction.

The Enchanted Forest
We start Ardenweald with the quest

, where we talk to the faes Lady Moonberry and Featherlight. In

, we tell them that we bring a message from the Maldraxxus Primus to the Winter Queen, the leader of Ardenweald. Moonberry tells us that she has a hard time believing it, but will do once we help her with a prank! We collect night lillies to give the Queen's Architect, the sleeping Zayhad, a hat, and a flower mustache.
After the prank is done, Lady Moonberry explains the situation in Ardenweald: The Winter Queen is currently unable to help with the anima drought, as her spirit is being pushed to its limits to control the anima drought going around the zone.
Lady Moonberry: Sadly, the Queen cannot grant you an audience. Her spirit is spread thin across Ardenweald.
Lady Moonberry: This drought threatens the entire forst. Your voice is but one bird singing in the night.
Lady Moonberry: The Queen's magic protects every branch, every leaf. If not for her vigilance, all might be lost.
Lady Moonberry: For now, we night fae must pact in her stead.
In our way to the first of the major groves in Ardenweald, Tirna Vaal, we stop by the Starlit Overlook to help vendors being attacked by Spriggans, Ardenweald's version of sprites, in

. After this, we're supposed to help the fae Korenth with recovering a wildseed from a giant bird in

. In this quest, it is explained what are Wildseeds - These magical seeds contain slumbering nature spirits and are used to help in aiding their rebirth.
Not Everyone can Live Again
We're then sent to Heartwood Grove in

. During our walk there, Featherlight tells us more about Wildseeds, and what the anima drought means for Ardenweald: Not all spirits sent there can go through the cycle of rebirth because of it. We also arrive at the first dead grove of Ardenweald, missing the mystical purple undertones of Ardenweald.
Featherlight: Each wildseed holds a spirit of nature who will one day awaken and return to their world.
Featherlight: The Queen must decide which ones survive... and which wither away, the spirit within lost forever.
Featherlight: It's... a grim task. But until the drought ends, it's one that must be done.
As we arrive in Heartwood Grove, we meet the first soulshaped spirit, Te'zan. With Te'zan, we help ward off starving creatures from wildseeds being carried to Tirna Vaal in

After this, we continue our way to Tirna Vaal in

, and we find an upset sylvar, who leads us into a tunnel to help her with a sick elder. However, this is all a trick by 3 Spriggan. After we deal with the Spriggan, we return to the road, and finally make our way to Tirna Vaal.
The Tranquil Pools and Spirit Glen
After we arrive in Tirna Vaal, we're sent to the fae
, who is responsible for tending to the wildseeds in the Tranquil Pools. We help imbue some with anima in

After this, we meet with Dreamweaver again, who then wants us to free other faes from being eaten by hydras in

A Special Wildseed
After we help free Dreamweaver's friends, they propose us to feed a wildseed of our very own in

. This wildseed was within the last ones to arrive before the anima drought began. However, as we feed the seed with anima, the spirit within binds with us!
Dreamweaver: Come everyone. The newcomer will feed a wildseed and we will peer into its spirit's dreams!
Dreamweaver: This spirit was within the last group to arrive before the drought began.
Dreamweaver: The younger wildseeds require a more hands on approach to grow into the ones you saw in the Tranquil Pools.
Dreamweaver: The wildseed is having a nightmare. This happens if the spirit suffered a violent death.
Dreamweaver: See? All calmed. The little wildseed is quite hungry for anima isn't-
Dreamweaver: The wildseed spirit is bonding to you! This is an incredibly rare event...
Dreamweaver: Fascinating! Please do and tell the droman what happened. I'll figure out what this means.
Dreamweaver: Hrm... what are you? Nightmares still linger... and now you'll only take anima from your bonded one.
The Spirit Glen
Another problem around Tirna Vaal are once again, the Spriggans near Spirit Glen, who are capturing soulshaped spirits and stealing their anima. We're sent there in

Arriving in Heartwood Grove, we find a sylvar named Niya, who used to tend to the wildseeds there. Niya tells us that her grove was one of the chosen to be completely depleted out of anima so other groves could survive in Ardenweald. We're tasked to kill former friends of her who are wielding strange masks in

We find the droman of Heartwood Grove, Krelnor, possessed by one of the strange masks, and are forced to confront them in

. We managed to defeat Krelnor and knock him back to his senses, but not before the Heart of the Grove is sent away. During the confrontation, Krelnor tells us about the masters his possessed self is serving.
Droman Krelnor: The heart and Ardenweald will belong to the masters!
Niya: The heart belongs to Ardenweald!
Droman Krelnor: All will join us. You are delaying the inevitable!
Droman Krelnor: Niya... I... am sorry...
Niya: The heart! NO!
Niya: What are we going to do? The heart was going to feed so many starving wildseeds!
Casadh Crann: The cycle will continue. Nothing will stop it, not even these masked ones.
Casadh Crann: I have seen many losses in my time, but hope always returns.
After this, we're then asked to return to Tirna Vaal in
by a grieving Niya. After returning to Tirna Vaal, we learn that the Winter Queen will be there in

! Currently, a placeholder event is there, with the Winter Queen empowering Tirna Vaal and leaving before we are able to speak with her. After talking with Lady Moonberry again, she thinks that the Winter Queen will have time to talk to us if we solve more crisis within Ardenweald, as she currently has to be in so many places at once.
The Glittering Falls
The Wild Hunt
Lady Moonberry mentions that the Wild Hunt, the equivalent of a military force in Ardenweald, has been called to the Glittering Falls, but were quickly overwhelmed by whatever was attacking there. We're sent there in

to meet with Hunt-Captain Korayn, who has heard of our past deeds in Ardenweald. Korayn asks us to retrieve fae weapons in
and find his fellow hunters in
. He believes the Wild Hunt are skilled and determined so they should be fine, but reality tells us otherwise. The one surviving hunter, Ara'lon, believes the Wild Hunt is being systematically hunted down.
With Ara'lon's opinion being taken into consideration, Korayn decided to join us on the hunt, helping us kill foul totems in

and kill more blighted mobs in

. During the hunt, a voice speaks to Korayn, a voice known to her.
Lorkron the Hunter: Korayn... ever the cunning huntress.

Lorkron the Hunter: Know your prey. The first lesson you taught me. One you have forgotten.
Hunt-Captain Korayn: Lorkron... why are you doing this? What has happened to you?
Lorkron the Hunter: Do you recognize your quarry? The blades they wield? The faces behind the masks?
Hunt-Captain Korayn: No... they were... night fae? Impossible!
Lorkron the Hunter: You sent us on a doomed hunt. Now you are the prey. And I know you well.
Hunt-Captain Korayn: Enough, Lorkron! If you truly know me, then you should be afraid.
Prey identified, we join Korayn in killing Lorkron in

. We eventually knock out the monstrosity Lorkron is mounted on and Lorkron himself, but he traps us and Korayn and makes his escape before he can be terminated.
After this, we're once again tasked to

This Is The Way
Journey to Hibernal Hollow
As we return to Tirna Vaal from Glittering Falls, Tirna Vaal is overtaken by strange creatures invoked by the wildseed bonded to us! We help clear up Tirna Vaal from them in
. During this quest, it is questioned a few times on how powerful the speed within that wildseed is.
Are all these nightmares coming from just one spirit? How is that possible?
What spirit is so powerful that their nightmares become real?
We must do something to soothe this spirit, before her nightmares overtake us all.
After we manage to clear up Tirna Vaal, it is suggested for us to go to Hibernal Hollow, a grove more powerful than Tirna Vaal - Even with the Winter Queen empowering Tirna Vaal, it can no longer take care of the wildseed. We recruit Niya in

and travel along with Dreamweaver in
. During the trip, Niya comments on our mission to meet the Winter Queen, the Wildseed, and the loss of Heartwood Grove. However, we are stopped by Ara'lon, who is blocking the way to protect Hibernal Hollow.
Niya: I heard you had a very important message for the Winter Queen.
Niya: It must be important for you to go to such lenghts to deliver it.
Niya: I'll do whatever I can to help. It's the least I can do after all you have done for me.
Niya: I've never seen a wildseed behave like this.
Niya: There must be a very special spirit within this one...
Niya: I hope we can save this wildseed. Too much was lost in when Heartwood Grove fell to those monsters.
Niya: I wish I could understand the Winter Queen. Why can't she use her power to save all the groves? Why must some die?
Ara'lon recognizes us from Glittering Falls, and knowing of our fighting prowess, asks us to help the Wild Hunt by rescuing wounded defenders in

. The wounded defenders mention that a monstrosity was responsible for most of the casualties in the area, and we dispatch of them in

After the Brute is dead, the Wild Hunt offers to escort our wildseed to Hibernal Hollow in

, so we can transform into a Vulpin, a form more pleasing to the soulshaped frog, in

. However, this is still not enough to calm the nightmares of the Wildseed.
The Fallen Tree
After seeing that not even the anima provided by Hibernal Hollow is enough to calm the Wildseed, Ara'lon has an idea - The Wild Hunt has been observing the movement of the possessed creatures, and they seem to be hoarding anima for unknown reasons. However, they know where the anima is being hoarded - Tirna Noch, Ara'lon's fallen grove where she served as a wildseed keeper. We go there in

Tirna Noch is in a similar state as the previously seen Heartwood Grove, but drust magic is also noticeable around the grove, showing that they're the threat looming over Ardenweald. At the new grove, we steal back plundered anima in

Dreamweaver: There is something so special about this spirit. Though they were mighty, they had endured great trauma.
Dreamweaver: Even though they should have been resting safely here in Ardenweald, terrible nightmares still torment them.
Dreamweaver: Through you, we will bring their dreams out into the open, and soothe their nightmare.
The Dreamer's Past
With enough anima finally funneling into the wildseed, we are able to peer into the Dreamer's dreams in

In Origins, we see a lot of representations of the wildseed spirit's nightmares, showing a plethora of dragons and some of her friends in Azeroth.
is Merithra of the Dream. One of Ysera's daughters, she served as a major figure during the War of the Shifting Sands and now serves as the ambassador of the Green Dragonflight in the Chamber of Heart.
is Cenarius, whom Ysera mentored, teaching him the secrets of the Emerald Dream. Like Ysera, Cenarius was corrupted during Legion, but players managed to redeem him in the Emerald Nightmare raid.
is Eranikus, who served as consort to Ysera. Eranikus died during the War Against the Nightmare, sacrificing himself to stop the corrupted dragon Lethon from absorbing the energies of the Nightmare.
is Malfurion Stormrage, whom Ysera taught a lot during his time in the Emerald Dream.
is Tyrande Whisperwind, who considered Ysera one of the most beautiful creatures she ever seen. Tyrande regretfully had to kill Ysera during the battle for the Temple of Elune in Legion.
Daugther: Mother, if only you were here with me. Our kin still have hope, but we struggle without you. I need your guidance.
Adopted Son: You were the mother that walked the path of the dream with me. You taught me so much. The world needs you.
Consort: I miss you, my love. We will be together again in the Dream, one day.
Student: My beloved made the right choice, when she tried to save you. I grieve for the way it ended. The Dream will never be the same.
Dear Friend: My friend... I mourn your loss, and the part that I had to play in it. I hope that this is not the end.
In The Betrayal, we're able to see the Worldbreaker being fought by a Sister and two Friends. The Worldbreaker represents Deathwing, the sister represents the red dragon Alexstrasza, and the two friends refer to the blue dragon Malygos and the bronze dragon Nozdormu.
After this, we get to revive the wildseed spirit's demise, Ysera, in
Fine del Sogno
, where we get to revive Ysera's final moments in Val'sharah as if we were her.
Awaken the Dreamer
Hibernal Hollow Invasion
As we awaken from the vision of Ysera's death, Lady Moonberry approaches us. Apparently all of Ardenweald saw what we've seen, but that's not enough... the Drust are preparing to attack Hibernal Hollow! We prepare the Wild Hunt to defend the Hollow in
The Droman's Call
and search for Drust spies in
The Forest Has Eyes
Lady Moonberry: Everyone listen!
Lady Moonberry: The Drust are on their way with an army of monsters!
Lady Moonberry: Everyone from here to Shimmerbough saw that vision! With the teeth and the claws and the h-heart wrenching s-sacrifice?
Lady Moonberry: But the Drust don't care about that! They just care we have a lot of anima here, and they want it.
After this, there is supposed to be a cinematic, but it is currently not ready for testing. Thankfully, our good friend Captain Exposition shows up to tell us what is supposed to happen!
Ahoy! Here is what happens, matey.
The dastardly Drust forces arrive to attack the grove, intent on stealing back the anima taken... and whatever else they can get their hands on!
With your help, the battle seems to be turning in favor of the Night Fae - when Drust leader Gorak Varr unleashes a mighty monster and returning villain Lorkron! Yo ho-no!
After a pitched battle, the monster is slain and the drust retreat! But there is a terrible cost... Ysera's wildseed has been mortally wounded...
Now ye be caught up with th' gameplay coming soon. We return you to th' regularly scheduled story...
The Dream Can't Die
After the small intervention from Captain Exposition, Lady Moonberry shows resolution and wants to bring Ysera's wildseed to the Heart of the Forest so the Winter Queen herself can save her in
. Most of the NPCs we helped in Ardenweald, including Droman Aliothe, Niya, Ala'ron, Lady Moonberry, Dreamweaver and others get together on a massive escort to bring the wildseed to the Queen's chambers.
Once we arrive to the Heart of the Forest, we are told that the Winter Queen is focusing her efforts on the Grove of Awakening, where fully rejuvenated spirits are reborn into their world. We then go there in
Awaken the Dreamer
. As we arrive there, we see another placeholder cinematic... and return to Ysera, revived! However, according to the Winter Queen, it doesn't look like she will be returning to Azeroth. However, we are finally able to deliver our message to the Winter Queen.
Winter Queen: You are reborn in Ardenweald, Child of Dreams. You are bound to this realm and will share its fate.
Winter Queen: You bring troubling news to my forest, <player>.
Winter Queen: If the Banished One stirs, then there may be a greater danger than even this drought.
Winter Queen: I invite you to visit my court. Come, <player>. See the Heart of the Forest. We shall speak further.
Winter Queen: Ardenweald's anima is barely enough to sustain our groves, let alone contribute to keeping the Banished One held.
Winter Queen: Groves will die because I have sustained this, instead.
Winter Queen: A hard choice, but better than no groves at all.
Winter Queen: Your journey continues. Know you have gained an ally in me, and in Ardenweald. I await word of your continued deeds.
With this, we're done in Ardenweald! The Winter Queen sends you to Revendreth next in
, saying that Sire Denathrius is a master of anima extraction, and he should be the key to solve the anima drought in all of Shadowlands... or is he?
