While this might appear to be a meaningless distinction, it does mean that there will only be a more concentrated point of focus for unlocking Pathfinder, rather than trying to maximize multiple reputations which may not all be available at the same time or grindable at the same pace. Covenant Renown is also said to have a
built in catch-up mechanic
, which should help players who either start late or are unable to dedicate enough time to keep up with those who heavily prioritizing their Covenant activities. Although at this point we don't know a whole lot about Renown, or even Pathfinder for that matter, this would seem to be a welcome simplification, as Pathfinder (and by extension flying) appears to be something that Blizzard wishes players to earn over the course of exploring initial
Shadowlands
content rather than simply being unlocked without any effort whatsoever when a patch drops.
You won't be able to fly when Shadowlands is released; we think it's super important that you experience the world as intended, that you meet everything on it and go through the quests... really take it all in from the ground. But then we realize that as you get further along in the expansion, you've revisited zones, that you like the convenience of being able to fly to areas, and so we did hear feedback from players about how Pathfinder worked in BfA, and complaints about the rep grind they had to do to achieve it. So what we're going to do to to unlock flying in Shadowlands is that this is going to be based on renown, so as you develop your renown with your covenant, that will effectively unlock Pathfinder.
For those who missed the
Shadowlands Developer Update
, Covenant Renown is a weekly objective progressed by going into the Maw and rescuing Tormented Souls or collecting Anima by accomplishing tasks out in the rest of the Shadowlands. Unlike Artifact Power, it is not an open ended grind and there are plans to have a catch-up system implemented right away.
