08/05/2021 alle 13:48
Ner'zhul's final words at the end of his Sanctum of Domination fight pay tribute to happier times in the former chieftain's life.
Upon defeating Ner'zhul, he states:
Ahhh... Rulkan... I come.. home...
Rulkan in Nerzhul's Past
For players unfamiliar with
Rise of the Horde
Chronicle Volume 2
, Ner'zhul's final words may have little resonance. However, he is calling out to his mate, Rulkan, whose spirit paid Ner'zhul friendly visits in happier times. Kil'jaeden used this knowledge to his advantage, appearing as Rulkan to convince Ner'zhul the Draenei were a threat to the Orcs.
Ner'zhul was originally the chieftain of the Shadowmoon Clan, powerful and well-respected by the other clans. His stature made him a target for Kil'jaeden, who instructed Gul'dan to manipulate events to turn Ner'zhul into the leader of the Horde. As part of the deception, Gul'dan threw the elemental spirits in chaos, breaking Ner'zhul's bond with his wife's spirit which plunged him further into depression.
Kil'jaeden then appeared as Rulkan in dreams to Ner'zhul, stating that the Draenei were responsible for the loss of the elements and also planned to destroy the Orcish race. Eventually, Ner'zhul believed the visions and increased aggression against the Draenei, but still held misgivings. When he reached out to the spirits at Oshu'gun for guidance, the true Rulkan appeared to him, revealed Ner'zhul had been deceived, and shunned him for the betrayal of the Horde. Filled with shame and abandoned by the ancestral spirits, Ner'zhul had little time to act as Kil'jaeden and Gul'dan kidnapped and stripped him of authority.
Ner'zhul's guilt over destroying Draenor and the Horde would continue to haunt him even as the Lich King, as Arthas uses this despair to subdue him when struggling for control. Could Ner'zhul finally be free of this despair, experiencing a vision of Rulkan and Old Draenor upon defeat?
AU Rulkan in Warlords of Draenor
In Warlords of Draenor, players encounter Rulkan as the Chieftain of the Shadowmoon Exiles, following Ner'zhul's defection to the Iron Horde to save the Shadowmoon Clan. In this alternate universe, Rulkan and Prophet Velen have "a deep mutual respect" and they both play a large role in the Shadowmoon Valley quest line.
Rulkan says: When the Iron Horde came, they gave our clan a choice. Join them or die.
Rulkan says: My husband Ner'zhul chose to save our people. He joined the Iron Horde, but they asked of him a heavy price.
Rulkan says: They said:
Grommash Hellscream says: What good are the stars and visions against steel and powder? Make a worthy offering, or your people shall die.
Rulkan says: So Ner'zhul turned to the silent void. He broke the ancient laws, and drew upon the dark star.
Rulkan says: I pleaded with him to stop, but he would not turn back.
Rulkan says: By breaking this stone, he forswore all loyalty to our ancestors.
Rulkan says: You must do what I cannot. Stop Ner'zhul. End his madness before it is too late.
Rulkan says: The Shadowmoon fortress is sealed to outsiders, but this keystone will allow entry. Good luck, hero.
Ner'zhul does not become the Lich King in this alternate universe, but instead uses Void magic to protect his clan from Hellscream's threats, magic which eventually eats away at his soul. Following Velen's sacrifice to purify the Dark Star, Ner'zhul retreats into the Shadowmoon Burial Grounds, where he serves as the final boss.
