Maw Lore Items Gave Actual Lore on Beta

As we doubtless all know at this point, there are various Maw Lore items that can drop off mobs or be found at various locations in the Maw. These each start a quest requiring you to take the item to Ve'nari. There are a total of 22 of these, and collecting them all even gives an achievement,
Le intenzioni della morte
. Many of the items mention a Warden Korrath, who I don't believe we have ever met.
Redditor VolksDK has asked
a very interesting question
:
I found out today that Maw Lore could actually be read in the beta. Now they're just static items for rep. Anyone know why this changed?
Some of the stories seemed really cool, like a night elf used as an experiment for soul forging by making her relive the burning of Teldrassil constantly to provide more power to soul forges.
The elf that VolksDK is referring to is
Soggetto 638
and the item found on her corpse starts the quest,
Note del Tormentatore
. When the quest is tuned in to Ve'nari, her response is simply and cryptically:
Quite the vivid description.
I suggest you consider this a reminder of what will happen should you fail in your efforts against the Jailer.
Ve'nari's response suggests that we read the Tormentor's Notes and know what she is referring to. But we, the players, don't get that privilege. Here is the content of the Tormentor's Notes as it read on the Beta version of the item, courtesy of VolksDK:
Subject Details
Number: 638
Manifestation: Maw Walker
Gender: Female
Species: Kaldorei
Experiment 72 Hypothesis: Maw Walker anima extraction provides more power when soul forging.
Test 1: Physical Pain
Various implements used to inflict physical pain. Subject was highly resistant to all physical methods.
Test 2: Sound
Partial success of anima extraction through constant exposure to gnomish tavern jigs. Problematic implementation. Caused several mawsworn to abandon posts resulting in subject nearly escaping.
Test 3: Forced Visualizations
Similar implementation to the torture chambers of Torghast, subject forced to relive specific moments. Breaking point: 115th run of the burning of Teldrassil.
Results:
Significant anima extraction resulting in equally significant stygia generation. Soul forge fully supplied equal to 10 times normal sources.
Transfer of Maw Walker prisoners to soul forges ordered per Warden Korrath.
So this raises a few questions:
Did the implication that there are many Maw Walkers contradict the story Blizzard is trying to tell? Though we know there are, and there are other lines in the game that make that obvious.
Was it a purely technical decision when the text was moved from items to quests and it was deemed too long and involved for quest text?
Was it an oversight?
Was it moved somewhere else that we have yet to discover?
Was it just too dark for the intended audience?
Whatever the case, the fact that the notes are found on the corpse of the subject suggests that maybe she tried to get out and took the notes with her. Many Kaldorei died to bring us this information and her story deserves to be told.
So what changed, and what else might we have learned from the Maw Lore items that no longer reward us with lore? What do you think? Let us know in the comments.
