Master Mathias Shaw has some voice over dialogue that hints at future Shadowlands developments and Alliance politics.
WARNING: STORY SPOILERS AHEAD. This information is also from datamining and can be subject to change before the game launches.
These lines with Master Mathias Shaw could set the stage for division in Alliance ranks:
Champion! You are needed in Stormwind on a matter of great urgency...and discretion.
Come at once, and come alone.
The Ebon Blade has extracted the Lich--the Highlord--from the battle in Icecrown. He is recovering in Acherus.
King Greymane, you shouldn't remain out in the open like this. You're too tempting a target.
Still, we need you in the throne room. There are matters of state that must be overseen until the king's return.
I don't question the High Exarch's ability to defend the Alliance. But as a king yourself, don't you think you should sit upon the throne?
Yes, your Majesty. If anyone can figure out how this all fits together, it's Bolvar.
Credit to

for noticing and starting a discussion on this dialogue!
Battle for Azeroth
directly examined flaws with Horde leadership, laying bare long-simmering issues with its structure. After rapidly cycling through several Warchiefs, the Horde agreed on a ruling council with representatives from all of the racial factions. Meanwhile, the Alliance did not experience the same degree of outward political turmoil, although the Night Elves, and to a lesser extent Worgen, remain dissatisfied with the conclusion of the Fourth War.
Much has been made of an Patch 8.2 interview with Polygon, which had a line hinting at future unrest:
Alliance don’t have that same division in their ranks just yet, and there isn’t that same natural point of choice.
This datamined dialogue is still incomplete and one-sided, but we can speculate on the following:
It takes place after Sylvanas' encounter with Bolvar in the
Shadowlands
cinematic, as the dialogue references Bolvar's rescue.
Anduin is missing. It's unclear what happened, if he's stuck in the Maw or something less dramatic, like going on a secret mission across Azeroth to find Sylvanas.
Turalyon, appointed High Commander of the Alliance in the
Shadowlands
novel, is apparently serving as the interim ruler in Anduin's absence.
Shaw seems to indicate he'd think Genn would have been a better choice.
In an excerpt from
Shadows Rising
, we see the moment
Anduin places Turalyon in charge
of the Alliance forces:
“What does it matter?” Greymane thundered. “You said it yourself, Turalyon. The Zandalari queen pledged herself to Sylvanas first. Perhaps that vow remains true. Perhaps she has turned her back on the Horde and even now shelters the traitor and her soldiers.” He gestured to the fallen spies. “Perhaps these brave few were killed for discovering the truth.”
Anduin had a duty to the truth, whatever it might be. Both men provided opinions he valued, but he could not deny that Turalyon offered the more tempting take. Still. Still.
“I am reminded, my noble friends,” Anduin began softly. “Of a day not so long ago, and not so far from here. A placid place in the Arathi Highlands. A gathering meant to be peaceful, a gathering meant to reunite families torn asunder by forces they could never have foreseen . . . ” He sighed, leaning forward, resting his knuckles on the edge of the stone slab. “Human and Forsaken families met in good faith, trying to find common ground and common love—and many did. For their trust, for their grace, they received only slaughter.” He lifted his gaze to Greymane, who had gone mercifully still, the flush in his face fading. “I give your recommendations equal weight. Turalyon, take Alleria Windrunner and investigate these deaths.”
Standing tall again, Anduin pressed his hand over his heart, finding that Turalyon regarded him with a sure smile. He approved. “I name you High Commander of the Alliance forces. Your task—your only task—is to find Sylvanas Windrunner so we might bring her to proper justice. Hunt her day and night, use whatever means you must.”
Turalyon bowed his head with practiced gentility, accepting the honor and the charge with a humble, “My heart and my sword to the cause.”
Genn, like Tyrande, is also unsatisfied with the conclusion to the Fourth War:
Genn: There is truth in her words, Anduin. Peace may be on the table today, but soon enough the Horde will sound their drums and march for war.
Genn: When that day comes, no scrap of parchment will hold them back.
All these factors adding up could lead to a political rift, splintering off the Night Elves and Worgen from the other factions. There's also the mystery surrounding Anduin's absence--if he's stuck in the Shadowlands for much of the expansion, it's easy to see how allegiances could crumble. And based on Shaw's words, there may be some scheming among Humans for the throne as well, not just Teldrassil causing discord.
Players have also seized on
Ion Hazzikostas' cryptic mention of time
from the WoWChakra interview, speculating if characters stuck in the Maw will come out changed or older as time flows differently in Shadowlands. Anduin's "Son of the Wolf" comic has long-puzzled players, with the final panels depicting an extremely-aged king, so perhaps if Anduin's disappearance means he's stuck in the Maw...his re-emergence would age him to fit the appearance in the comic. Again, this last paragraph is just speculation--but players have been eagerly looking for time-skip hints, so we wanted to bring it up.
