Revendreth is one of the new zones coming in Shadowlands, a moody zone with vampiric influences where flawed souls are sent. From our
Shadowlands Zone Preview
:
Revendreth is a land of dark secrets and gothic spires, mostly shrouded in darkness, although there are a few places where light has broken through the dark clouds and seared the earth. Ruled by the Venthyr Covenant, Revendreth is not a place where souls are usually hoping to be sent to.
Souls sent to Revendreth are of those who were prideful in life or have flaws that prevent them from being useful to the other areas of the Shadowlands. These Souls are brought to Revendreth to atone for their sins and prepare for redemption - Through unimaginable torment inflicted by the Venthyr. One such soul that has found himself in Revendreth is that of Kael'thas Sunstrider, who has to pay for his sins in life.
However, despite being aware of their role of stripping away souls of their sins, the Venthyr are slowly succumbing to their own pride, leading to a leadership crisis within the vampiric tormentors.
Five Wards of Revendreth
In the Gameinformer piece, we learn a bit more about different parts of Revendreth.
Revendreth is a large gothic castle overlooking a forest and players are introduced to the zone through carriage rides, taking them through the Village Ward, Catherdral Ward, Ember Ward, Castle Ward, Military Ward. One notable detail is the graveyard filled with "sin stones" listing all the crimes of the inhabitants, which are scratched off over years as they complete penance for their sins.
The Ember Ward is the one area filled with light, and due to the vampiric nature of Revendreth, it's where dissenters are sent to be tortured. We'd be curious to see if this has any ties to the cosmic Light force, or if it's simple sunlight:
This area is destroyed, and the unfortunate Venthyr that have been sent here as punishment are either dead, driven insane by the light, or battling each other for the scant pockets of shadow that dot the ward. The ruling class of Venthyr can’t torture each other like they would other souls, but they have the Ember Ward to handle dissidents and rabble-rousers. Outside of being burned to death by the light, the exposure also slowly turns Venthyr insane.
The Endmire is located underneath the castle, a place where twisted souls end up that have moved from realm to realm due to misplaced Anima. While recent souls all went to the Maw, who do you think would end up here from WoW's history?
The Gargoyle Army is housed in the Military Ward, but it's suffering due to the drought of souls caused by Sylvanas and the Jailer funneling newer souls to the Maw.
Brokers - New Faction?
The Revendreth tour revealed the presence of a new faction--the Brokers. The members are not tied to any one zone or Covenant in the Shadowlands, and as Blizzard drew parallels between the Brokers and Ethereals, perhaps we'll see them take on similar roles as item vendors related to max-level progression. It's unclear from the interview if the Brokers are simply a new NPC race we'll encounter in the Shadowlands, or if they'll be a faction we can earn reputation with for interesting rewards.
The Ethereal faction also had interesting ties to the Void, a cosmic force that has surfaced frequently in Legion and Battle for Azeroth. Most notably, Locus-Walker was an ethereal who trained Alleria Windrunner in the ways of the Void, which then ushered in the
Void Elf Allied Race
. Later in Battle for Azeroth, we saw
Shadreen the Ethereal
ominously tied to the Brawler's Guild mystery.
Perhaps the Brokers faction would play a similar narrative role in Shadowlands, occupying an interesting place in the story of Death by the end of the expansion.
The Brokers are a faction separate from the Covenants and the Maw, sort of soul-traders, that can move freely around the Shadowlands. In the wake of the recent calamities, the Brokers have taken this chance to capitalize on new opportunities for profit and perhaps more. They are similar in appearance to the Ethereal faction from multiple expansions, and the team’s comments lead me to believe they’ll be just as shady and manipulative throughout this expansion as our old friends.
