In the most recent Dragonflight Alpha build, the Forbidden Reach is available for testing, together with the Dracthyr starter experience. This island off the coast of the Dragon Isles was fashioned by Neltharion as training grounds for his ultimate soldiers, and we went through the questline that shows their reawakening, highlighting the important moments.
WARNING: DRAGONFLIGHT STORY SPOILERS AHEAD!
The Dracthyr campaign starts at level 58, with you in a chamber with other dormant Dracthyr within what's called the War Creche. As you awake other Dracthyr, a blue dragon named Lapisagos issues an order to contain the Dracthyr once more, as they're "relics of the past". We manage to get past Lapisagos and find the old Weyrn Training Grounds, completely overgrown. The Dracthyr were in stasis for a long, long time.
Outside the training grounds, a beacon is lit, and we investigate it. The beacon plays a cutscene that shows similar beacons were placed at other Creches. We then head into the Support Creche, where Dracthyr menders were kept in stasis. We first attempt to enter the Support Creche, but immediately choke, as insects have taken over the creche and filled it with noxious gases. After obtaining an antidote from the local fauna, we then enter the creche, and amidst rescuing the Dracthyr still imprisoned, we find out that Malygos is the one responsible for keeping them imprisoned. As we heal the drakonids from Malygos together with the Dracthyr, as they are also affected by the noxious gases from the Support Creche, an uneasy alliance is formed.
After saving the Dracthyr in the Support Creche, we press on to the Siege Creche, where we find Primalists attacking! The Dracthyr are not entirely sure who they are, but they vaguely remember fighting them off, and as such, we disrupt their attack. As we report of the Primalist attack, Wrathion and Ebyssian show up, concerned that they were called to the Forbidden Reach by a "world-ending" force. At this point, the Dracthyr learn that their creator, the former Earth-Warder Neltharion, is dead.
We then head to the Froststone Vault, where "the Dracthyr Legacy" is held, and defend it from another Primalist attack, with the help of Malygos's drakonid forces. However, even the combined forces of the Dracthyr and Drakonids are not enough to stop the Primalists, which overwhelm the Vault's defenses. The leader of the Primalists, the Proto-Drake Raszageth shows up and conjures a massive storm, threatening to engulf all of the Forbidden Reach. With no other choice, the Dracthyr are forced to evacuate the Reach with the help of Wrathion, Ebyssian and Nozdormu, and they head to Stormwind (with Wrathion) and Orgrimmar (with Ebyssian) to warn the other races of Azeroth.
After evacuating the Forbidden Reach, you will reach Stormwind or Orgrimmar. You then go through a basic introduction to your faction, but it is worth noting that their initial arrives are met with resistance from the defenses. Here's the Alliance initial dialogue for reference:
Wrathion: Soldiers of Stormwind, allow me to--
Shaw: Wrathion! You were warned against making unannounced visits. Especially when you bring company.
Wrathion: A thousand pardons, my dear spymaster, but I come bearing the tidings of the Dragon Aspects for Lord Commander Turalyon.
Wrathion: As for the dracthyr, you have my word that they will cause no harm. They have come seeking refuge, not conflict.
Shaw: Their conduct will be on your head, Wrathion. The dracthyr have my leave to roam the city. But know this... SI:7 will be watching.
Wrathion: Hmph. Mortals...
Dracthyr Weyrns - Horde/Alliance Dracthyr
Canonically, the Dracthyr are divided in 5 Weyrns, military units each led by one scalecommander:
The Obsidian Warders, led by Scalecommander Azurathel;
The Dark Talons, led by Scalecommander Cinderthresh;
The Healing Wings, led by Scalecommander Viridia;
The Ebon Scales, led by Scalecommander Sakareth;
And an unnamed Weyrn, led by Scalecommander Emberthal. Emberthal's weyrn has been completely decimated by the Primalist attack, with Emberthal being the only survivor.
Your Dracthyr character can be one of two Weyrns, chosen for you the moment you create your character - Alliance Dracthyr are part of the Obsidian Warders, and Horde Dracthyr are part of the Dark Talons. In the storyline, Wrathion becomes more familiar with Azurathel, while Ebyssian talks with Cinderthresh.
The Healing Wings stay behind in the Forbidden Reach to stand their ground against the Primalists, while the Ebon Scales defect from the Dracthyr forces, with Scalecommander Sakareth believing Neltharion broke his promises and abandoned them.
My friend, we are in a precarious position. Your General will call a full retreat if she has not yet.
When we do depart from here, I have implored Azurathel to bring at least his weyrn to Stormwind. There the Alliance can lend aid in exchange for aid. They are one of the largest gatherings of mortals on Azeroth, and I am... familiar.. with many of their leaders.
Trust me when I say they could use you as much as you could use them.
Ah, Evoker. My thanks again for your timely arrival earlier.
As I was mentioning to Cinderthresh, I suspect the Horde will be the right batch of mortals for the Dark Talons to meet with. They are one of the largest cultures in Azeroth currently. and an accord with them could prove vital for your kind.
Funny enough, Azurathel is blue, while Cinderthresh is red!
