Looks like a small version of G'nathus. ~~According to the Pet Journal this can drop from the Dinomante Zandalaris on the Isle of Giants.~~

Edit: As of the latest PTR build he now drops from G'nathus himself and not the Dinomancers. Drop rate appears to be 100%.

G'nathus is located around the top island in Townlong Steppes. The island right underneath Isle of Thunder.

Killed him today with 5 people. A healer is def. needed if you bring a tank (although I heard he can be kited). He hits the tank for ~200,000 dmg, and his chain lightning ability can be interrupted.

G'nathus spawns every 15 minutes.

He dropped the pet and I won the roll (~~Not sure if it drops every time~~ edit: killed him 5 times, and the pet has dropped each time). Uploading a picture now.

He drops ONE pet that the group can roll on.

note: The pet does not appear in a bubble like some of the screen shots.

This pet seems to be a 100% drop. I was in a group of 6 and we killed him 6 times so everyone in the group could have the pet. This pet can be caged and sold once learned. I saw one go for 8700 gold in my realm's auction house. Happy Hunting!

Soloed this boss for the spawn, he's so cute. Took me roughly twenty five minutes of kiting on my arcane mage. He's soloable and has a -huge- kite range.

I can confirm that you are able to kite him as a Retradin too, only need the spec that makes the judgment spell to slow them down. I took me 29 min and 7 seconds, gl everyone! =)

Don't confuse G'nathus, with Spawn of G'nathus.
Pet itself doesn't drop from Spawn of Gnathus. (which has 4M HP)

It drops from G'nathus. (40M HP) and it appears to be almost 100% droprate.

This boss can be easily soloed by hunters. Just make sure your pet has Avoidance and stand ~ 15 yards away from the boss (on the right or left side).

Solo'd as frost mage. Took...forever, but all I had to do was put my water elemental in the water and tank him. He only deals 15,000 to the elemental, and I just frostbolted him to full hp. Yeah, I was reading a book at the same time to help pass the time.

Possible to solo it with some difficulty on a Death knight tank item level 527 with the help of a cursed swabby helmet. Did so today, died twice and eventually got the feel for the fight. Managed to kill G'nathus with 20 seconds left on the swabby timer. Be sure to pop your cooldowns for best dps.

Just soloed as a 577 item level Rogue, it easy if you are lower item level, especially as a melee.

The Lightning Breath you can avoid by just circling around G'nathus, and the Arc Nova you pop a cooldown, if you're a Rogue, Recuperation and Leeching Poison will help you heal back up, and for example a Warrior's Second Wind will always keep you alive if you pop a cooldown so Arc Nova doesn't kill you.

Dropped pet on all 3 kills by the way.

As a warlock, this is basically a tank and spank encounter. Put your voidwalker between G'nathus and the rock wall so the knockbak wont push it far away, place yourself by the side of the mob far enough to avoid the aoe and the breath, and keep spamming your rotation until it dies

Get the Cursed Swabby Helmet. It will help greatly! I've soloed him on both my dk and feral druid by using this item. If you just swim around him in a circle you should not be hit by his lightning breathe because he stops to cast it in one direction. When he starts to cast Arc Nova, swim out of range of him and then head back in once it is done. Enjoy your pet!

U can easily solo this world boss as a Destruction Warlock, with Voidlord tanking it, i did it just now, and 1st kill, 1 per im guessing its true what they say, 100% drop rate!

Drops from "world boss" elite mob, G'nathus, which swims around Shan'ze Dao (northernmost island off Townlong). Boss is soloable but not easy for non-tanks, drop rate is high (possibly 100%, I have gotten one every kill since the pet was added).

G'nathus has 2 abilities... Soffio di Fulmini cone attack which hits for around 350k (180k on 570 tank) but is completely avoidable by sidestepping, and every 20 seconds or so he uses an Nova ad Arco which hits for 350k (150k on tank) and knockback. Not sure if the latter is avoidable at all.

In other words, he is basically an underwater version of Nalak 's arc nova and Huolon 's breath. If you can heal/cooldown through the arc novas you'll have no issue killing him solo.

As a Hunter, this was so easy it was boring. I put my pet on tank and used Glyph of Misdirect, but I really didn't need it because I never pulled agro. Nonetheless I kept misdirecting on my pet because I was sure something was going to go terribly wrong. Yet nothing bad happened.

Suggested tools and tips:

If you fight underwater, you will want, not need, but want, something like Aqua Jewel that drops from Sahn Tidehunter, or the Cursed Swabby Helmet you get on Timeless Island by opening the Sunken Treasure in the sunken ship (so easy, everyone should get one for themselves). I say "want" because G'nathus is HUGE and he likes to fight close to the surface of the water, so if you don't have these things and need to swim up and take a breath, it's really no problem since he isn't attacking you (since you have a pet). In fact, I actually floated on the surface and fought him for a minute, but I wanted to see the fight better so I submerged. You might be able to just float and fight. Float-fighting as it were.

Here are your easy-peasy strats.

For Ranged with tank-pets:

(A) Don't worry about kiting him. He never once attacked me.
(B) Get out of range where your attacks won't work and then swim just a bit closer. Why? I don't know, I guess to make you feel safe because he is doing a ranged lightning attack (which never hits you, since you are ranged and you have a pet). You could choose to stand to the side of the boss to avoid the cone-attacks, but I didn't bother. I was right in front of him and never got touched.
(C) Don't worry about healing your pet. My pet's health never went down that I noticed. Which is amazing really since everyone is complaining about how much damage this boss does.
(D) He does an ability which knocks your pet backwards in the water. I never bothered putting my pet against a wall to pin the boss down, because G'nathus never chased my pet after the knockback. The pet just swims back to him and the fight resumes.
(E) He has a bazillion health, so be prepared for a long grind of a boring fight.
(F) A Kraken squid swims by to nuisance you and it has a large agro range. It will seemingly attach right to your FACE but it does little damage so kill eet and get back to grinding.

Like I said, I kept periodically refreshing my misdirect on my pet because I've had my share of long grindy fights that went horribly wrong right at the very end because I got lazy. Right at the end G'nathus seemed to want to move. He moves very slow and yet he was right on top of me suddenly. I was trying to decide whether to panic, but his attacks never did anything to me at all. I just swam backwards and resumed. I swear you could just walk away and let your pet and passive damage whittle the boss down over the course of a half hour. Go watch some youtube, check your email and keep an eye on the screen because of the pathing massive nuisance-squid.

My guess why the fight was so easy: I noticed my pet (a crocolisc) didn't fight the boss face to face. Instead my croc stood on the BOTTOM of the ocean looking up at the boss, which was weird. I think the boss was aiming his attacks <down> at my pet so they never touched me. And since my pet was below the plane of the Lightning Breath cone, it never touched the croc. Only Arc Nova touched my pet, and not for damage, just for the knockback. Otherwise I have no explanations why it was so easy. The fight took me about 5 minutes to solo and that was being a bit lazy with my rotation. You burners can break the 3 minute barrier.

For Melee:

My suggestion is to kite him towards the right side of the island (Shanze Dao), there is a very large rock ledge with a couple ads pathing around. They don't seem to go near most of the ledge and if you can scout out a place to run up from the ocean, then you should be able to kite the boss to the edge and fight him on dry land. You can side-step (strafe) the Lightning breath and I think you can interrupt the Arc Nova, but if not, just heal or dam-mit through it and run back to the lip. If you REALLY want to fight him in the water, then don't get fancy, just pin him down in one spot, get right by his side and swim around him in a tight circle, constantly spinning him so his Lightning Breath never hits you. Arc Nova will hit you though, so use your cooldowns and improvise if you have bad gears. If you are using the spin-method, it will help if you have a swim-speed boost like the items I mentioned above.

If you are trying to farm this guy for many pets to sell, get invites to other servers. He has about a 15 min spawn time per server, but if you surf to other realms you can kill him several times in quick succession.

if you're a hunter make sure you have your pet out, it also helped for me to stand on the nearby rock after I hit it.

I added him to NPCScan (ID 66467) and then fly over the area where he patrols. His spawn rate still seems pretty fast, but I think he might sometimes be too deep to detect when simply flying over, because it usually takes a few passes to find him.
