5.2 Patch notes:

Elite Battle Pets have been added to the game world. These rare pets will spawn alone against an entire team. The Beasts of Fable taming quest will now become available from Gentle San or Sara Finkleswitch once Aki the Chosen has been defeated. Defeating all of the fabled beasts will award the new Red Panda pet, while completing the associated daily quest has a chance to award the rare brown, white, and orange variants.

EDIT: more info! Bestie Leggendarie is the quest you will have to complete to obtain this pet, after completion you will have the option to do a daily version Bestie Leggendarie: Volume I that has a chance to contain Panda del Sole Panda di Montagna Panda delle Nevi.

At first I was like Yay a red Panda, so I hurried along quickly to get this "red PANDA" and as soon as I got it I was shocked and disappointed,when I notice this thing did not look like a Panda, grrrr blizzard! what's with this Raccoon, I felt like punting him like the Marmotta da Lancio. alas..in the end all critters have a place in my heart..

Moral of the story if you think you're getting one thing, blizzard will screw you over, and still make it funny.

If you're wondering about the fact that the adorable little Red Panda and the massive Giant Panda (aka "Panda Bear") have the same name well... here goes:

The Red Panda, though not very well known today, was actually discovered by the West before the Giant Panda - the former in the early 1800s and the latter not until the 1860s. So originally when Westerners used the term "Panda" they meant this cute little animal. When the Giant Panda was first recorded by Westerners they gave it the name "mottled bear". It wasn't until the early 1900s that it was erroneously believed to be a member of the same family as the Red Panda and people began to call it a Giant Panda or Panda Bear (and to use the word "Red" or "lesser" to differentiate the Red Panda).

Fast forward through decades of biological debate and advancements and we now believe that the Giant Panda is a member of the Ursidae family (ie, a bear after all) whereas the Red Panda is the sole surviving example of the family Ailuridae. Distantly related to weasels, otters, badgers, raccoons and others (all in of the superfamily Musteloidea). Its most recent common ancestor with bears was 40 million years ago. To give some perspective, humans and chimps diverged roughly 5 million years ago.

P.S. Nobody is entirely sure where the word "Panda" actually comes from either. Originally claimed to be from the Roman goddess Empanda (via French), but currently thought to be derived from a Himalayan word.

The easiest way to complete this quest is simply by getting an apocalypse pet, and then 1-2 tank pets and waiting it out. Makes it a joke. (don't downvote this when they hotfix it ;P)

After which it turns into the daily quest Bestie Leggendarie: Volume I which gives you the Provviste delle Mascotte Leggendarie dei Pandaren with possibly more Companion Pets.

Ironically, although everyone who completes the Beasts of Fable quest line will be rewarded with a Red Panda, this pet can actually be considered the rarest of the Panda group because whilst you can obtain multiple copies of the others - Sunfur, Mountain and Snowy, at this stage, you only ever obtain 1 Red Panda.

Red Pandas are the cutest out of the 2 pandas, and if I am correct panda just means bamboo eater, which both the giant panda and the red panda eat, resulting in them being so lazy and cute ^_^
I neeeed one of these, they are my favouritest animals ever. Must. do. quest.

I levelled up this pet to lvl 25, but I'm really disappointed. It has almost no offensive attacks, only the first attack is offensive, the rest is just passive healing attackas. I tried this in a few pet battles and it's rather useless, it dies fast and does little damage.

Never let it be said WoW never teaches you anything. I was at the Natural History museum in London yesterday with my cousin and in the display case with the famous Chi Chi, the giant panda was a stuffed red panda! Holy cow, they really do exist in real life, and it looks almost exactly as Blizz has it. I didn't they were real.
