This'll mean that the ton of BOE vendor or item drop Critter pets can be useful when you convert them to Rare.

Wolpertinger, Renna Invernale, Baffo il Ratto, Scooter la Lumaca, Pachiderma Rosa in Miniatura, Carlino Carino, Cucciolo di Mulgore, and Ser Pancetta are good examples of great pets that are only limited by the fact that they are learned as Uncommon only.

Family specific Flawless Battle-stones can be found in the Sack of Pet Supplies obtained from performing Pet Trainer quests, and are Bind on Pickup.

If you are a serious rare pet collector, don't use the stones on your caught pets until you've upgraded all these first. They can not be upgraded in any other way.

To use this item you have to summon the pet you want to upgrade, target them and use it on them. Don't try to use it on pets while their in the pet journal like I did.

If you are going to use a flawless stone of any variety consider leveling the pet to 25 first. It will take the pet down to level 23 and you will get credit for hitting 25 both times on the level x number of pets to level 25 achievements.

A great place to farm critter stones is in Crystalsong. This is the only pet type that appears in this zone and if you have a humanoid with beast attacks (Kun-Lai runt, etc) you can clear them out very fast without ever needing to heal. The critters respawn quickly, and after a few hours of farming I had 3 critter and 1 generic stones.

I just "created" this after winning a random pet battle in Terrokar Forrest. So you can get them to drop from winning pet battles with wild pets too!

A subset of rhinoloupe's list, these pets are only available in Uncommon quality, and also have unique combinations of abilities.

Ser Pancetta. Pigs have a few unusual abilities, but they're the only ones with Fortuna Pazzesca, and you're not going to be getting any of the other pigs.
Carlino Carino shares its unusual abilities only with Cucciolo di Quilen Portafortuna, which most of you will never get. Tesoro Sepolto specifically is only shared with the Cub and pigs.
Wolpertinger has a unique combination of unusual abilities, including Gas Soporifero which is only shared with the captured Draghetto dell'Infinito.
Egbert and Cucciolo di Mulgore have a combination of unusual abilities that matches each other, but no one else.
Nocciolina and Pachiderma Rosa in Miniatura have a combination of unusual abilities that matches each other, but no one else.
Baco da Seta Imperiale has a a unique combination of abilities, they're just not unusual.

The other approach is to upgrade whichever pet you like looking at, because you look at your battle pets a lot.

This just dropped from fighting a lvl 14 Roach in Thousand Needles. I thought they were just quest rewards but I guess not. Like has been said elsewhere, don't use this on a pet that you can capture (unless of course you really want to).

Just a note for everyone you can purchase these by trading someone your pet, having them use the stone on them and trading it back.

I received one of these after using a single pet to fight three critters. Could just be coincidence, but it might be how it works.

There does not seem to be a connection between the pets involved in the battle (yours or theirs) and the type of stone you receive. I received a critter stone after finishing the Taming Outland achievement. The last fight that awarded the Sacca di Provviste delle Mascotte was against Cavaliere del Sangue Antari, who has dragonkin, magic and elemental pets. I fought him with two dragonkin and a beast.

Just got one a few seconds ago in battle in the Outland. Used one critter to fight three others. My pets were rare, the ones I fought weren't. It's only the second one I've received, both in pet battles.

A good idea in my opinion would be to use this stone on Perky Pug. This pet has abilities only shared by the Lucky Quilen Cub, which most people do not have. The stone would give the pug 13 attack and 11 speed at level one, and coupled with it's rare ability set this stone would make this pug a very strong battler.
Another pet you could consider using this on would be Scooter the Snail. This snail and other snails with the health breed have the highest health in game, and with the stone they would have 11 attack, 9 speed, and 175 health at level 1, and 276 attack, 195 speed and 1969 health at 25. Snail abilities, like Absorb and Shell Shield, and this pets extremely high health make it a very nice tank able to outlast even the highest hitting pets.

I got one of these upon getting to level 21 with my Snake pet while farming Nether Roaches (which usually come either: more Nether Roaches, Cats or Mice) and I'm not sure what exactly happened, but I got one of these and I'm wondering if farming critter type pets can give you one or leveling to 21 gives you a stone for the pet type that yours is strong against (?)

Regardless: I got a stone from fighting critters and maybe it's just a bug, or a leveling gift for battle pets

A good spot to farm these is Valley of the Four Winds. Near the daily pet tamer, there are lots of critters. Kun-Lai Runt, Flayer Youngling, etc are wonderful against them, and it's also a fantastic spot for leveling pets. Most of the adds are critters, with a few aquatics here and there.

I'd like to confirm that this item can indeed drop from Borsa Nebbiosa di Misteri Esotici, which is your reward for completing a dungeon Call To Arms. According to Wowhead, it has about a 0.03% chance of dropping, with only 15 or so accounts out of 47,000 bags. Sadly, I don't have a screenshot, if I could link one here, I would.

Honestly, I'd have preferred a mount, but hey, if RNG decided to not hate on me for one day, I'll take it.

Also, as far as my research has told me, for those of you interested in selling this stone even though it's BoP, people can trade you their pets, you use the stone, then sell their pet back to them. I'm selling this to someone on my server for around 3k gold, but prices will obviously vary depending on server economies.

I was really thrown for a loop when this popped into my inventory. So, as an fyi:

These stones can drop randomly. I got mine after fighting a rare quality Gold Beetle and poor quality Sand Kitten in Tanaris between the path to Un'goro Crater and The Noxious Lair. Date and Time: 6 May 2013 around 3h00pm PST.

What happens if you use it on your pet to change it from Uncommon to Rare and then you put it in a cage? Does it go back to Uncommon quality or does it remain rare if traded or sold on the AH?

Received after a pet battle in Mount Hyjal. Defeated a critter pet with a lvl 15 dragonkin. My guess is that a lvl 15 defeating a lvl 24 is hard, but the outcome was well worth it. Also had 2 other pets join the battle, and had to defeat them as well to get the pet battle win!

Although not stated, the stone dropped for me in my Sacca di Provviste delle Mascotte today from the quest Gran Maestro Antari, and also dropped with 4xCorredo per la Pulizia delle Mascotte.

So in 5.4 it seems we will be able to turn in 3 of any of the battle stones for a marked flawless battle stone, which you can use on any pet. While leveling my other pets, I've found ~5 or so. Just a little FYI for those of you farming around halfhill and getting alot of these.

Using the Pietra Evolutiva Rara Animale

1. Go to your pet journal then select and summon the pet you want to upgrade.
2. Target the pet you summoned in step 1.
3. Right click on the Pietra Evolutiva Rara Animale in your inventory.
4. Don't panic - your pet still seems to be same quality and you suspect you wasted your stone - but....
5. Dismiss and summon again to see your shiny, rare quality (blue), lean, mean, fighting machine.

A good zone to get this stones is The Valley of the Four Winds, arround The Heartland.

There are few to none agressive mobs, i was able to level a toon from 12 (pandaren) to 90 and many many low level pets in the process, getting more Flawless Critter Stones than i needed.

I was using lvl 11 pets to level, my Ravager Hatchling (strong against critters and huge self healing skill) and any other random pet

You CAN farm a specific type of Battle-Stone by battling pets of that same type. While you may occasionally receive some other type of stone, you definitely have a higher chance of receiving an aquatic stone by fighting aquatic pets, for example. I kept reading people say that the type of battle pet you fight has nothing to do with the type of Battle-Stone you receive, and that it's completely random. My experience had shown that not to be true, so I decided to do some testing and post my results in case anyone wanted to farm for a specific type of Battle-stone.

Battling Aquatic pets (which have 3 aquatic pets about 50% of the time, and 2 aquatic/1 flying about 50% of the time.) My results: 178 battles = 6 Aquatic stone, 1 Flying stone, 1 Humanoid stone

Battling Flying pets (which have 3 flying pets about 50% of the time, and 2 flying/1 aquatic about 50% of the time.) My results: 142 battles = 3 Flying stone, 1 Aquatic stone, 1 Critter stone, 1 Flawless Battle-Stone (which can be used on anything)

Battling Critter pets which usually have all Critters, and occasionally have a Beast in the group. My results: 96 battles = 3 Critter stone, 1 Beast stone

As you can see, it would appear that you can indeed farm a certain kind of stone. Just find an area where you want to level your lowbie pets that has the type of critters consistent with the stone you need the most of (usually Beast, Flying or Critter, since these types have the most pets that cannot be obtained above Uncommon quality.) Also, remember that if you've got one or two stones of a type you don't need, you can farm the additional one(s) to make 3, and then trade them in for a Marked Flawless Battle-Stone that can be used for any pet. If you're finding a lot of these, but want to upgrade a different-type pet, you can trade three of any family-specific battle stones to Audrey Burnhep (Stormwind 69.4, 25.1) or Varzok (Orgrimmar 52.5 59.3) for one Marked Flawless Battle-Stone.

I loved AMIB's post on Flawless Aquatic Battle-Stone, but as he/she hasn't been around for more then a year, I would like to continue the trend.

This is a list of uncommon-only pets, with alternative pets with the same set of abilities if present. Will try to update for WoD.

Armadillo Pup - Stone Armadillo is the wild alternative.
Brown Prairie Dog - Borean Marmot and Brown Marmot are the rare alternatives.
Brown Rabbit - Same abilities as Snowshoe Rabbit and Spring Rabbit, which are also uncommon-only. There are a lot of wild alternatives.
Egbert - Same abilities as Mulgore Hatchling, which is also uncommon-only. There are no rare alternatives to this pet.
Elwynn Lamb - Black Lam is the wild alternative.
Gu'chi Swarmling - There are no rare alternatives to this pet.
Imperial Silkworm - There are no rare alternatives to this pet.
Mr. Wiggles - Same abilities as Golden Pig and Silver Pig, which are uncommon-only as well and only available with the Recruit-A-Friend system. There are no rare alternatives to this pet aside from Lucky (Korea only).
Mulgore Hatchling - Same abilities as Egbert, which is also uncommon-only. There are no rare alternatives to this pet.
Peanut - Same abilities as Pint-Sized Pink Pachyderm, which is also uncommon-only. There are no rare alternatives to this pet.
Perky Pug - Lucky Quilen Cub is always rare but only available from MoP Collector's Edition.
Pint-Sized Pink Pachyderm - Same abilities as Peanut, which is also uncommon-only. There are no rare alternatives to this pet.
Scooter the Snail - There are several wild alternatives.
Singing Cricket - Red Cricket is always rare. Grassland Hopper and Marsh Fiddler are the wild alternatives.
Snowshoe Rabbit - Same abilities as Brown Rabbit and Spring Rabbit, which are also uncommon-only. There are a lot of wild alternatives.
Spring Rabbit - Same abilities as Brown Rabbit and Snowshoe Rabbit, which are also uncommon-only. There are a lot of wild alternatives.
Undercity Cockroach - Standard bug abilities. Sand Scarab is always rare. There are a lot of wild alternatives.
Whiskers the Rat - Grotto Vole is the wild alternative.
Winter Reindeer - Little Fawn is always rare. Fawn and Gazelle Fawn are the wild alternatives.
Wolpertinger - There are no rare alternatives to this pet.

All of the spots mentioned in this forum are great. I would just like to add to it a pet that I use when farming critters. I am sure that there are others, it's just my preference.

Crominius Rare lvl 25
Bite, Ancient Blessing, Ravage

I normally run a leveling pet. So attack once then swap this guy in. Ravage and Ancient Blessing keeps his health topped off. Wanted to point out, even if you notice Ravage's damage may not kill what you are attacking (Ravage damage x2) do not forget that since Crominius is dragonkin, the 1st attack drops the other pets down below half. Therefore, you get the dragonkin 50% bonus damage on your next attack.

Obtained one when I catched second rare Fire Beetle at Searing Gorge.

Previously catched pet was H/S and after that I tamed H/H. Used lvl 25 Beast and lvl 14 Humanoid.

Edit: Catched third rare, also H/S. That time I had no stone. So you can ignore that post.

I had no idea that these could pop into inventory as random loot after a pet battle! I was extremely surprised. I've been doing pet battles for a long time, have over 680 uniques and around a hundred max level pets and this is the first stone of any kind I can ever remember getting after a pet battle.
