The Captain's Key is used to open the Captain's Chest, found inside the hold of the second ship anchored offshore in the pirate village south of Steamwheedle Port in Tanaris. It's on the 2nd deck -that is, the first deck below the top- BEHIND the stairs.

When you descend the stairs from the top deck turn right, then right again, then go all the way to the back. You'll have to clear 1 pirate from the top deck, and 2 pairs from the second.

Please note that this will NOT award any sort of XP or start a quest, you only get a green and a grey item. It's quite annoying to clear the small boats full of disarming mobs for some classes.

I actually found a green item and a blue item. The blue item I found was:

I recommend others to open the chest if you find the key, the reward could be a blue!

You can loot more than one of these. Basically kill pirates and get their foot lockers. If you have one in your inventory already, you can't take additional ones out of the lockers, but you can carry the lockers themselves in your pack.
I had 2 of these (one on my ring and one in a locker) and I was able to open two chests in a row. It takes about 2 seconds for the chest to respawn. This way you only have to clear once to open the chest multiple times.

Funny thing, since i don't have auto loot on when i took the green item and cash from the chest, the chest did not despawn. so probably the next one to loot it will only get the gray items that i left in the chest.

I've looted the chest three times now, each time I got a green, Wirt's Third Leg, and a grey item. I must be lucky.

Get onto the 2nd boat at (76,45) to find the chest on the 2nd floor down under the stairs.

Rare drop before but now it's rather common. Chest only yields basic chest items.

With wowhead numbers, it looks like you'll have to kill about 200 pirates to get one of these.

I grinded here for 2 hours, for experience, and for ship schedule, and get 2 of these, but no schedule. First was only white item and 2 junk, second a green, and 2 junk....

It is NOT on the boat offshore as stated earlier, its the second boat on the water. Also, I got a blue, a green, some cash and a grey. Not just green. Probably a variable.

Was playing my lvl 50 alt, had this key on keyring, but the chest was still marked "Locked" (in red), and the gear icon remained grey. I was grouped with someone in a hurry, so didn't take time to think to click the key itself.

If things have changed since the last time I did a key quest (my main is now lvl 80), could someone note that please? Do you have to click on the key itself? And, if so, why is there still a gear icon? :P

Found this today in a chest that drops from pirates and opened the appropriate chest in 2nd ship. Got a Pattern:Barbaric Belt and Wirt's Third Leg along with A Parrot Skeleton (poor thing) :)

Yes, the key will be consumed when you open the chest. One-use only. So for those of us freaks who like to just 'collect' things randomly, especially keys, once you pick this up, don't go peek inside the chest, and it's yours forever.

I just noticed something, and i figured i'd tell about it: This key is Unique. They are inside Pirate lockboxes you get sometimes when you kill the various pirates in the area. The drop rate for the key may be low because of the fact that if you have one, and you get inside another lockbox, you wont find another.
I had about 5 pirate boxes, looted one and got the key. Use the key to unlock the Captain's Chest, and then open another pirate box. I've been finding the Captain's Key in one just about every time. You just have to use your first one, then you can get another. Wait for the Captain's Chest to respawn, then do it again.
Hope this helps :P
(The key isnt in every lockbox tho.)

Note that the captain's chest doesn't show up on the mini-map while using the dwarf racial Find Treasure.

This Spawned for me on the second ship, second floor in the front of the ship where the captain's quarters would be.

Just farming rep around this area and found out something interesting. If you open the chest and don't take all the items because your inventory is full, you can't get back into the chest without another key.

***However*** Seems the loot resets after the lid closes anyway. I farmed another key and opened it and it had a new green AND Wirt's Third Leg :D (Actually my second of this farming session, got one out of a Pirate's Footlocker before this!)

After 2 days of rep farming (the last 6k of hated through to neutral) and dozens of boxes being dropped I finally got 3 of these keys.. all at the same time. So the key is there, just a pain to get.

Can confirm in 4.2 this item ends up in your regular inventory, with the removal of the keyring.

When I came through the tunnel, I found an unlocked chest with a blue item in the first camp (sadly, not usable by me). Second camp had a locked footlocker. Captain's chest is in the boat furthest out to sea in the captain's room at the end of the boat under the stairs. The key may drop more frequently than indicated here. Both times I've done it, it's dropped during the quests.

As of Patch 5.2; I couldn't find the chest in the Captains quarters of either of the pirate ships docked on the shore on the East coast of Tanaris (South East of the Caverns of Time on the map). I didn't find any chests on the two docked, the one being constructed, or the 3 blockading ships.
My key that had been in the bank still says 2 day duration.

I just found the Captain's Chest located on the 2nd floor of the 2nd ship, in the forward most part of the bow of the ship (where the Captain's quarters would be located). When standing directly on the chest, the TomTom coordinates were: 75.32, 45.91.

The chest contained A Parrot Skeleton, Formula: Enchant Boots - Lesser Spirit & 12 silver, 5 copper.

For those without a co-ordinates add-on such as Tom-Tom, the Captain's Chest is in the Northern pair of ships (filled with Southsea Swabbies), in Lost Rigger Cove, to the East of the Caverns of Time. Cross the plank to the second ship, turn right and down the stairs, right, right and right again into the Captain's Cabin.
