The most productive way I found so far is to farm the packs of 6-8 Ik'thik Warrior beetween position and in Dread Wastes. You can AoE kill them pretty easily with the Angel of dead buff wich cast Reave. It almost get 50% of their health. Just blow your AoE cooldowns and you should be able to kill a pack easily. If its too hard for you to solo, I did couple pack while grouped and it seems to multiplies the Dread amber shards drop (we were getting 1-2 each per packs (have to test it out)).

By farming these mobs you get:
- Lots of Windwool Cloth
- Reputation with The Black Prince
- Dread amber shards (ratio vary)
- A decent amount of Mote of Harmony
- And couple of greens items

Confirmed: If you are grouped, the shards multiplies even if loot is set on FFA you will get all of em (I got 3 from 1 pack, never seen before)

Edit:
I pushed the farm to test the productivity. I farmed the packs on north and the flying pats from the spine at near the breach on the wall.
The flying pats are not endless, after 4 mins pulling all of em (could take longer if you kill 1 by 1) they stop coming and then you have a little bounty on the ground. The total killed is much more than a pack. (and they restart spawning in few minutes anyway).
Edit: Spine are worthless for the amount of time/kills you spend to collect shards

Edit: Average of 5 shards total for the 7 differents packs cleared. But it happen sometime to have no drop at all. Could depend on day maybe.

I guess I'm one of the unlucky ones. I talked with a fellow blood dk yesterday, saying he had farmed several hundred of these in a matter of hours. Interested, he told me the coords of his spot and I set off.

Long story short, 40+ mobs killed, 2 shards. I went back to farming cloud serpent eggs.

465 Blood DK here. Best advice I can give you is go to Zan'Vess in the lower left hand side of Dread Wastes when the dailies are NOT there.

Being my class made pulling 20+ mobs easy, (even more with Army) but the amount of enemies near each other and the fast spawn rate is still very, very effective. I started with the village you see when you first get there, kill all of them, then go along the coast to the Northwest I believe. There's 2 other "villages" with at least 50 mobs on the way. Then just fly back to the first one and do it all over.

I got the last 23 shards I needed to hit Revered in less than 2 hours. Literally ZERO competition. Everyone stays in the scars. You can chain pull very easy and although Angel of Death is a very popular buff, I found Bladeturning to be AWESOME. The more mobs I had on me, the more attacks counted towards that, and the stun is very useful. However, I suppose my Vengeance stacks may have made up for the damage I would've had with Reave. I just hated waiting a minute between attacks.

Well, I decided to farm about five a day. Wasn't too bad. Only thing that bothers me is that all the work to get those and you only get 250 rep. It may be reasonable to some but I think 500 would suffice.

Had some good speed farming Mire Beasts and Swamp Striders w/ a friend. Of course only do this on a day where it's not part of the daily quests. Took almost exactly 1 hour to get 19 shards from 292 mire beasts, 95 swamp striders, which is how many you'd expect at 5% drop rate.

I am wondering if there is another factor we don't know about with these. People seem to have really good luck or really bad luck with these drops. Most I talk to either get several a day (more when farmed) or get almost none a week. I am nearly exalted with klaxxi myself and still haven't finished one stack. I farmed for 2 hours and only found 1. It would be nice if it was more even.

Iam farming @ 26,2 / 87,2.

There are non-stop respawn packs of 1-2 and as a fire mage i can kill them quit easy at this rate.

Using Exe444's advice I farmed at (26.2, 87.2). Here are my results:

Zan'thik Manipulators slain: 114
Zan'thik Impalers slain: 79
Time: 60 minutes
Dread Amber Shards dropped: 11
Total kills: 193

3.22 kills per minute
17.55 kills per Dread Amber Shards
5.70% Dread Amber Shards drop rate
0.18 Dread Amber Shards drops per minute

Current location: (26.5, 87.5) has really low drop for Schegge di Ambra del Terrore now.

Farmed those mapcoords as a Ret Pally with the Klaxxi buffs Calma e Sangue Freddo & Buoni o Cattivi.

I killed over 200+ Manipolatore Zan'thik & Impalatore Zan'thik in about 30-40 minutes (respawn rate is still fast) with about 6-7 npc spawn points in the vicinity. I only got 4 Schegge di Ambra del Terrore, 8x green item gear, a stack of Tessuto di Telaria, some food drops and a whopping 20x Granulo dell'Armonia!

This is my new place to farm: Granulo dell'Armonia instead of Schegge di Ambra del Terrore . . .

terrible drop rate. Ive gotten 11 total and im almost revered with the klaxxi. And honored with Black prince. I doubt these are worth farming at the moment.

Just throwing this out there. As a rogue, I was able to successfully farm one turn in (20 shards) approximately every hour with the Raining Blood and Battle Hymn buffs. I'd assume that any other class that dual wields/attacks in high frequency would have just as much fortune farming these.

I personally chose to farm off of Mistblade Rippers, Coldbite Crocolisk, Lake Stiders, and Chillwater Turtles at the Lake of Stars (when it wasn't the daily spot of course). My methods were to grab about 2 groups of 5 Rippers, along with any other mobs that I could possibly reach capping out at around 15 mobs per pull. Given the raining blood buff, you can either focus on one of the mobs, keeping the rest of them stunned, or AoE them all (if your class has such capabilities) and still keeping them stunned. As I mentioned before, the rapid attack speed is needed to not get melted by the mobs via keeping them perma-stunned. After the first mob dies, odds are you've dropped to about 20% health, at which time the Battle Hymn buff will top you off by the time the pull is complete.

By the time you are able to make a full lap around the lake, everything will/should be respawned allowing for non-stop farming. This method will also net a vast amount of Motes of Harmony granting a significant gold gain while farming rep, and vise versa. (granting rep while farming motes)

It's really up to you whether or not farming the dread shards is worth it. Happy farming!

edit: probably worth adding that i am currently 383 ilvl and combat spec (mad haste, making Raining Blood even more effective).

At less than 2g per turn in, these are effectively worth less than 10s each. If you are exalted with the Klaxxi already, I wouldn't waste my time or my bag space on these.

Edit: As of 5.1, these come out to roughly 40s each. I stand by my previous statements.

nakript's method works great for me.. simple, effective. easily done with a 450aIL frost mage, when co-opped with reave.

I'm sitting at 20580 reputation with the Klaxxi, leaving me in need of only 420 to get exalted. I'm farming these shards with very little pay off at the moment. After an hour of farming well over 200 mobs killed, I have gained only 5 shards. This essentially only confirms that we're all either extremely unlucky, or that Blizzard felt they dropped too often, and nerfed them. In any case, I recommend killing the optional daily bosses whenever possible, and not bother farming these.

I swear they made it so the droprate increases once you're exalted :S I had a total of 24 drop in the months before I was exalted but in less than a week after hitting exalted I've had 18...

I appreciate all those who posted about farming shards. I decided the effort was not worth it, and I'd just pick up what I got along the way. In case anyone is interested in a snapshot of the casual droprate, I just hit 999 Exalted yesterday. I turned in the quest twice and had 14 shards left in my bag - so I found a total of 54 shards without farming any. Put into perspective, that's the equivalent of half a set of dailies at Revered. I was going out there each day anyway as I had held on to the Dark Skies quest while working towards the achievement, so it wasn't a real grind to run the rest of the dailies while I was working my way through Revered. So, a half-hour spent doing dailies (and getting VPs and Lesser Charms) versus how long would it take to farm 80 shards for the equivalent rep? I can see the attraction of farming these shards if you REALLY want the Klaxxi gear (and the ring from the final quest IS quite lovely), but I could not justify the time involved in grinding that out. And this is coming from a REAL farmer (not just Beloved, but also every pet and almost every mount in game, over 14K Ach points, and also almost every recipe for every prof). It was a pleasure to toss those things out of my bag, never to take up space again!

In 5.1 the number of Dread Amber Shards you need has been reduced from 20 to 5.
Each hand-in grants you 250 reputation if you don't have Saranno Famosi or the Human racial ( Diplomazia ).
Either of those will increase the amount you gain to 275, and both will increase it to 300.

Also, the newly added Grand'Encomio dei Klaxxi will double whatever reputation you gain. And since the Diplomazia and Saranno Famosi bonuses are added before the effect of Grand'Encomio dei Klaxxi triggers it's possible to get a total of 600 reputation for each hand-in. (550 for none Humans)

As of 5.1 the amount for getting reputation dropped from 20 to 5. I got 300 rep and with the bonus for commendations its 600 total, which got me to Exalted easily. Highly recommended if you want to get Klaxxi Exalted fast.

Farming these today from the Zan'thik Manipulator and Zan'thik Impalers and it feels as though they reduced the drop rate of them. 15 minutes for only 2 shards.

I know it's business as usual, it's still frustrating. I got 4 shards on completing todays Klaxxi dailies. I reached exalted with them about 2 weeks ago and it was a tough job. Why don't you just get rid of the entire vendor rep system in first place?

I went to Zan'vess to farm Dread Amber Shards, 2 drops in 25 minutes and 1,5 Spirit of Harmony. Maybe if I should go for a Spirit of Harmony farm, then I would be able to farm Dread Amber Shards much better...

I don't think that these items are so valuable to make the drop rate that low.

I've mainly been using nakript's method of farming Guerriero Ik'thik between kypari'ik and the breach in the wall leading to valley of the four winds. Whilst i've been killing these NPC's i've found the respawn rates can sometimes be quite slow. When this happens I will go up onto the wall and continue to kill any Guerriero Ik'thik that fly over. They can fly over in constant swarms at times where you can just pluck them out of the air and stack them up for a few minutes uptime before returning to the path between kypari'ik and the breach.

Farmed over an hour with 0 dread amber shard drops. I tried Ik'thik, Zan'thik and Mistblade areas all with no luck. I also noticed that these mobs are no longer giving Black Prince rep at Honored. Currently 9424/12000 with Black Prince and 9672/12000 with Klaxxi.

Can any one confirm whether or not the shards continue to drop at Honored or higher rep with Klaxxi?

If you are interested in farming the Dread Amber Shards, first of all, you can't beat a low droprate / high stack count required. But if you are set on getting that little extra rep, my advice is to:

1. Have an ilvl ideally of at least 460+

2. Get the following augmentations / enhancements (Revered with Klaxxi req):
Battle Hymn from Skeer the Bloodseeker (Augmentation) - After killing a mob that grants exp/honor, for 10 seconds, all successful damaging spells or abilities will restore 1% of maximum health.

Raining Blood from Xaril the Poisoned Mind (Enhancement) - Upon reaching 8 injections of Raining Blood, take 138750 to 161250 Nature damage. In addition, all non-player enemies nearby will be stunned for 5 secs. (Rather large DPS increase)

3. Do not worry about the size of packs, as with the above buffs, you will be rather hard to kill as well as do sufficient damage to make quick work of them.

4. I have found the best place to get large packs of mobs to be the dread march, My ideal location to go between is 58, 46 & 67,49 - this provides sufficient mobs, sufficient respawn time & a good amount of shards.

4a. If the dread march is taken, another prime location is Zan Vess (Used a old scenario map to illustrate Zan'Vess - It is on the lower left of the map) This again, has many packs/closely packed mobs which can simply be killed using the above buffs.

5. Again, the drop rate may not be very high, and you do require ~~a lot~~ five shards for a single turn in, but this should help speed the rate up at which you get the Dread Amber Shards if you are intent on farming them.

I think, to a certain extent, they only planned for these shards to ever get you over a hump if you couldn't wait an extra day or so to hit a reputation mark. That said, as of 5.1, Zan'vess seems to be the best place to farm these up and the Kyparite Crawlers seem quite generous.

I've tried the other places suggested, and just found Zan'vess marginally better than the other options.

I tried farming this a bit today, got about 1 drop in a hundred kills, quite contrary to the video posted by kynd even though that was only a couple of days old. Not sure what the deal is.

Farm these in a group. All group members can loot them, so just stay in one area, and make sure you keep everything dead. The faster you kill, the faster you spawn. We had 1 tank just taunting everything, a healer keeping him up, and 2 dps pulling everything to them. You collect pretty quickly - just fight in an area that drops the meat you'd want.

I don't recommend farming for these. Just do dailies for The Klaxxi and you will gather enough for a few turn-ins to boost you a little further, but farming these for rep is not a good idea.

Just a heads up. After reading all these comments I got extreemly down and worried about trying to boost my rep with these shards but while running around trying to get charms for the valentiens event I hit the Twinspire Keep and stomped constant booty... and in 2 hours time i gathered not only the charms and plenty of motes I also ended up with 30 dread amber shards! I have no idea why these mobs drop the items but they do so if anyone is still looking for a good place to farm these. Hit up the keep in jade forest!

To the comment by "Blic" I do not know what issue you may have had but as in my above statement I HAD the "Lovely Charm Collector's Kit" on when I got the 30+ shards that I collected. So i doubt that the kit has any effect on the gain of these items.

Just FYI, was trying to farm some of these today and could not get a single one. Tossed the Lovely Charm Collector's Kit and started getting them again. So not certain, but seems like this kit may interfere with some random drop items like these, like it's been reported it interfered with the ear drop for the Darkmoon quest...

Normally I wouldn't post something like this, but...
I've consistently found myself getting little to no shards when I purposely go out farming Mantid with ostensibly high drop rates according to this page (namely, Impalers and Manipulators - both ranking the top of the list with 10%), yet when I'm working on quest objectives that involve killing enemies with drop rates often below 7%, I actually make a decent haul.
This has been an on-going phenomenon for me, but today emphasized it best:
More Impaler and Manipulator kills than I can count (10% drop rate): 0 shards
7 or 8 Frightened Mushan slain for a quest (4% drop rate): 3 shards

I know "random is random"... but still...

Zan'vess is the best spot to farm these, I needed 3 to hit exalted and they dropped for me in less than 10 minutes. 1 dropped off the kypari crawlers and 2 off the impalers and manipulators. Would definitely recommend this spot if you want to farm them.

It would be better to just keep the shards you get from doing dailies and wait until you are revered. With grand commendation of the Klaxxi, it would give 500 rep (without the population buffs).

Not sure if this is intended or not, but I was helping a friends 85 alt in Jade Forest, finishing her quests fast, and i kept dropping dread amber shards. Definitely much more easier than farming in Dread Wastes, but it is probably a temporary bug. (It is currently 5.2 and we killed the mobs in the "Horde Camp" southeast of Paw'don Village. We did her quests there, quite faster compared to higher level zones of course, and in the meantime I gathered 9 shards, for which I was farming for ages in Dread Wastes)

I think the horrible drop rate for these is partially because of botters. If it was a reasonable drop rate so many botters would just go ahead and get exalted with the Klaxxi in days.

Don't waste your time with this *!@#. The drop rates are supposed to be 10% off Zanthik Manipulators, but I killed dozens without a single drop. All the comments on here are incorrect at best, there is no practical way to farm these. I managed to get halfway through revered so far, and have 2 picked up from all the dailies I have done here and the time spent camping warbringers and killing things from boredom. You may be one of the lucky ones to pick some up in any numbers, but I would bet there are many more like myself. Having said that, Klaxxi dailies are easy and commendations take some of the grind out. Don't forget to use your farms now for the free 400-800 rep daily.

Once you are Exalted with Klaxxi, don't forget to *REMOVE* these from your bags - vendors won't buy them. At that point they are just Soundbound trash. Although I suppose you could save them to turn in for Semi della paura if you really want the quest reward of less than 2 gold...

the drop rate on these is bull@#$%. if something has a 10% drop rate that means for every 10 kill u get at least 1.

But that is soooo NOT the case. If u ask me the highest drop rate should be 3% or maybe 4%!

In 5.4 these also drop from the Manifestation of Pride in Vale of Eternal blossoms, not sure if this is intended or a bug.

Just had one drop from a Twinspire Taskmaster. Judging from the drops listed here, looks like I'm not the only person to experience this fluke.

I'll make this short and sweet. Stand at 63.5, 72.9.

4 Ik'thik Genemancers (and one in the distance but in cast range) total of 5 respawn as fast as you can kill them, literally. I am a well geared hunter and could not keep up at times. I cannot post the data I can only tell you that I walked away with 50 shards in about an hour. And that was all I needed to cap, now they call me the the Wakener - with a cool scorpion mount.

UPDATE 2: My first ever post down vote, I am hurt. Results may differ goes without saying when it comes to farming. 1. Fact: Ik'thik Genemancers have the highest drop rate. 2. If you are in the right spot you cannot argue the respawn rate, it is almost as if it is bugged. 3. If you put one and two together you have no better choices. I can say my guildmates are having great success here, and yes, some have had poor runs, others have had better runs than me. Before you downvote, please make sure you have the stomach for farming.

Could just be luck (and most likely is) but I tried 63.5 x 72.9 and got 0 shards in 25 kills.

Flew over to 39.2 x 31.2 and got 3 shards in about the same amount of time, more kills because more mob availability in a slightly larger area.

Just my input.

I tried Zan'Vess what with all the mobs there. I got 7 shards in less then ten minutes. I was working the north and north east section of the isle. Good luck!

This item is a random drop, doesnt matter where you are in the Dread Wastes .. "Zan Vess", south of the "Lake of Stars"...or where ever. I spend most of a day killing everything and didnt get a single one, though the other day, I managed to get 7. So 5 shards will get you 250 reputation increase with Klaxxi, say your lucky with 10 a week in the time you play doing ALL the other things in WOW (and I do have an external life),the repeat quests give 130 rep.. it will to take ages or virtualy for ever to raise your rep to exhalted with the kalaxxi.. before you can buy the tabard for example. You can't farm this item... you'de go insane! my advice.. forget it!

The RNG on these has gotta be the most R'est N's I've ever seen G'd. I landed on a small plateau (37.1, 73.4) and I was getting a shard every 3 kills. I thought you guys had rotten luck (usually I do) or I hit the jackpot spot. Then just like that it dried up and I was lucky to get 1 out of every 50 kills. I went from 4 shards to 16 shards in less than 3 minutes. A half hour later and I'm still stuck at 19. O.o

I think it's more efficient to camp Warbringers and Warscouts for their badges. >.>

For those that are solo'ing this content many xpacks later, I recommend not bothering with farming these shards. I found that circling Pandaria, killing zandalari warscouts and warbringers not only gets to Klaxxi exalted faster, but gets a hefty head start towards the other factions as well.
