From my experience these are more rare to skin than other hides. On 20 stacks of rugged leather I've gotten 9 of these.

Totally stupid.. This hide dropped to me In Onyxia 25-man lvl 80 raid. they must have forgotten to chance it from lvl 60 instance.. :P

These are used for one of the engineering pets. Might be worth trying to sell some on the AH if you get them.

BEST places for Rugged hide! Also, Thick leather with hides that drop randomly as well:

Blasted Lands: Mobs are all over, you literally just run around and blast stuff over and over and over, and they respawn quickly as well. Tons of boars, blisterpaws, etc All over zone one right after the other. ALSO, as you're grinding, you will pick up a few shards or something that begin a quest. They stack so you can just turn them in one after the other, rewarding a sack of goods each time with 1-2 green and blue gear: nice added bonus. Just circle Dark Portal area.... its SO easy its almost boring! But very rewarding. After 1 1/2 hours or so, I had no less than 140 rugged leathers and lots of thick ones as well.

A couple faster ways:

Sunken Temple!: keep in mind, the dragon bosses drop only 1-2 thick or rugged leathers, so you can skip the tunnels and boss chambers.... It only takes 10 minutes per run, too!: Just run in, start at one side, and circle main room grabbing all welps and wyrmkin elites, exit instance, reset, and repeat. After like 30-40 mins, and a few circles, I left with:

170+ Rugged leather
50+ thick leather
42 Worn Dragon scales
70-80 Green Dragon scales
and again, a few random hides as well. So fast!

Dire Maul- North entrance: Only need to run in and hit first room in center, and around the square in 2nd room to the west. Hit gordok mastiff mobs, exit, reset, repeat. Mobs aggro easily, so i just run around and tab target 1 member of each "group", put up a non-damage debuff until I get as many around me as possible, then I blow them all to hell :) Takes alittle longer, as in 20 mins tops each run, but again, I left with over 140 rugged leathers and 40+ heavy leathers.

I upload a screenshot with marked areas of where i farmed in the Blasted Lands(4-10-13) that i got rugged hide. No idea the drop rate as it was a brief farm. Might wanna try all 3 areas marked on pic. Best spot is the middle one thats on the path to the portal.

I am on a pve server so farming is easy and calm. if your are in a pvp server, for some servers blasted lands have become a gankfest by 90s and best to preferably avoid this zone. Might wanna go to sunken temple. If you do decide to go to sunken temple, make sure to have every bag emptied out! They will fill up fast with all the junk drops and skinning.

Absolute best place to farm rugged hide if you're level 85+ is Onyxia's Lair. There are about four or five guards that either drop 10-19 rugged leather or 5-8 rugged hide. The best part, is simply farm, leave, reset instance and do it all over again. I ran it three times and got over 22 rugged hides and 80 some rugged leather.

In my opinion, Onyxia's Lair is the best place to farm Rugged Hide. The first NPC gave me 7, second one gave me 9, and the third one gave me 6. My charactor is a 110, and I'm in raid mode.

Thanks to everyone for sharing Onyxia's Lair idea. It is a good spot for Rugged Hides.. but be sure your classic skinning is high enough. I went in with 153 skill, and i got heavy/thick leathers (no skill ups either). I went just outside the Lair and skinned dragons/crocs to maxed skill level.

And also, it's a hit and miss with hides.. first 2 runs gave me 30 hides and 25 rugged leathers, next 2 run gave 55 rugged leathers and 0 hides.
Still think this is the best spot for hides though. 4 mobs and all that leather is awesome.
