Imo hinterlands (down at the ocean to the east) is the best place to grind these. They don't have the biggest drop rate, but instead they have a way faster spwan rate, and since i grinded them as lvl 70 killing them didn't take long. And if you're horde there is even a city nearby so you can sell all your trash quick

Turtles, http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=5431 , on the coast south of CoT on the east and the southern coastal tip of Tanaris have a decent skinning rate (50%) for these as well.

These ones are hostile but greater in numbers compared to the neutrals in the northern part.

I recommend farming turtle scale for any new players looking for mount money between the levels of 37-40. You *must* be a skinner to benefit from this, but the mudrock turtles along the coast of Dustwallow can be skinned for this, as well as also-valuable medium and thick leather. The average price per stack of turtle scale on my server is about 5g. Between the turtle scale, medium leather, thick leather, and vendoring the speckled shell fragments, you can run up about 100g in probably 3-5 hours depending on kill speed (and whether or not anyone else is farming them). It's quick and easy cash for skinners and it won't take out of the questing system for long if that is what you prefer to do. And you will level at least once or twice in the process.

I am updating this to indicate that once you get to the 41-43 range, the Steeljaws in Tanaris drop these at a much better rate.

But what I want to know is how much in AH are these generally worth? the box at the top say 20s but i see them for MUCH higher on Draenor realm. if any1 has any idea what i should sell mine for id appreciate it

If it's not obvious from the above comments you need to SKIN the turtles for the scales. Although they do randomly drop it's an incredibly low drop rate.

Notes:
1. Tanaris has 2 types of turtles. Low 40's turtles in the north and aggressive 49/50 turtles in the south. The southern turtles are more complicated as there are roaming patrols of ocean giants.

2. Hinterlands is the best place for high 40's/ low 50's horde, because most of the turtles are above ground and your next to a city to vendor.

3. For alliance high 40s/low 50s the best place is southern tanaris. You can vendor and buy bullets/arrows in the caverns of time. Druids have an advantage in tanaris as many turtles are underwater and you have to swim around the ocean giants. Aquatic form FTW

4. Took me about 1 hour to grind out 40-50 turtle scales and 70-80 thick leather.

5. Dont buy scales on the AH unless your really lazy. People sell them for 1g per scale. You can get 2x from a single turtle in tanaris.

Tanaris is the best place to find the turtle scales, hands down. If you want to go to dustwallow feel free to grind for like 3-4 hours for little reward. The port town in Tanaris is a couple minute walk from Gadgetstan, faster on a mount. The turtles drop at least one shell (if you skin them) about 50% of the time. And as for the respawn time, just go up and down the coast, killing them all and go back to the other side of the town and do the same on that side. This works for me pretty well 'cuz I can sell of the vendor trash they drop. Good luck with those Wildvine quests!

In my opinion, the turtles near Steamwheedle Port are no good for farming Turtle Scales. They are too far apart and respawn slowly, you will spend most of your time running or swimming between turtles instead of killing them. And there seems to only be a 30% or so rate of scales on these turtles as well.

I was able to skin 6 stacks of turtle scales using around 450 arrows at Land's End Beach (under an hour, level 62 hunter). Besides the scales, I also netted 5 stacks of turtle meat, 1 stack of rugged leather, 4 stacks of thick leather, a couple of pearls, and I threw out many stacks of raw yellowtail fish and all gray items.

There are no giants patrolling down this far. It's so far out of the way, I can assume it's deserted nearly all the time. The turtles are so closely packed that I was able to easily pull 5 at a time with my pet.

This spot is definitely worth the 4 minute run down the coast. Bring LOTS of extra bag space if you want to have any room for vendor fluff.

Edit to add: I just went down with 36 slots free and did another 50 minutes of farming down at Land's End Beach: 103 scales, 95 thick leather, 36 turtle meat, 30 zesty clam, 26 rugged leather, 3 pearls, and 63 speckled shell fragments (i.e., 6g worth of grays).

So far the best place for me to obtain Turtle Scales it was Land's Earth Beach. South Tanaris. It is a bit far away but the respawn rate and number of turtles there is huge compared to Tanaris northrend coast.

Right now on my server (emerald dream) there going for 1G each. The drop rate of them is crazy and leather workers are crazy for them. Good way to get some extra mount money. lol

I suggest farming at the over look cliffs in Hinterlands. The turtles there are docile (not saying too much for the horde though) lol, just watch your step. Happy farming :D

Land's End Beach at the far southern tip of Tanaris has tons of turtles and absolutely no elite giants to deal with. Drop rate for me so far has been about 75%.

A level <40 shaman looking to craft the turtle scale armor should head to dustwallow marsh. the drop rate is not as good as the other places but there is plenty of turtles to kill and alliance can pick up a quest for them as well.

My rogue (70) buddy and I (74 Mage) spent about 20 minutes at Land's End Beach in Tanaris, and in that time, he gathered around 140 of these suckers, as well as about 75 thick leathers and 50 rugged leathers. I gathered enough trash off the turtles in that time that it all sold for about 15 gold. Not a bad haul at all.
For those asking, no, you have to either swim to LEB or use some elixir/ability to walk on the water.

I noticed one thing and not sure if coincidence or not.. but every time the loot included turtle MEAT, I would get scales when I skinned it. 100% of the time for me with that combo. Now I did skin some dead ones and some of those had scales but cldnt find the killer to ask if meat was looted, but I'd be certain it was. .. maybe TOO coincidental, but just a nice fact if not. Its a shame though it takes so many of these scales (same with dragon, scorpid not so bad, just bad drop rate) just to make ONE piece.

Prices on AH fluctuate. .I've seen the green dragonscales go up as high as 15g a stack but then today saw them for barely 2G?

Like earlier posts on this thread, I would say that land's end has a very good drop rate. I was able to loot 2 stacks of 20 in less than an hour. The AH on my server has gone WILD for the turtle scale; I was able to get 52 gold a stack a few days ago. I don't know how long that's gonna last though. good cash while I can get it!

For Higher Levels (60+) I strongly suggest Southern Tanaris.
-The travel time is not long
-It is extremely easy kills. ( I grinded for about 30-45 mins on a 76 Hunter)
-The drop rate is about 50% (best rate in tanaris)
-Spawn is medium. (Killed everything on the beach from East to West, and when i decided to finish, they had spawned again at the other end.)
-If you are a hunter, this place is prime; You serpent sting one, pet attacks, you SS another, until there are none in the area.
-Blizzard definitely made this a grinding place, considering that there are no quests(that i know of) around this area except the treasure quest.

Good spot for them at levels of 37-39 is the Dreadmuck Shore in Dustwallow Marsh (just north of Theramore, bear right out the gate). Got them from skinning turtles, rarely were they just dropped. Plenty of turtles and they regen pretty fast. Also it is a quick ride back into Theramore to sell other items they drop, etc., then back to grinding them and make some turtle armor items (leatherworking).

If you have access to dalaran, there is a portal to Caverns of time in the big tower building. This will save you alot of flight time if you plan on farming Land's End in southern Tanaris ;)

*edit* Very good spot, loads of mobs, good drop rate, and got 3 golden pearls from the clams

In the wake of Cataclysm, it seems that Tanaris is no longer the best place to farm turtle scales. The turtles directly east of Gadgetzan maintain their excellent droprates, but have been spread too far and now sit almost exclusively in water for fast farming. I have yet to test if the turtles in Hinterlands are still an option, but in the meantime I've been farming stranded sparkleshell turtles in Thousand Needles. They tend to cluster close together and respawn quickly when killed, and have good drops on turtle scales, thick and heavy leather, and hides.

thousand needles isn't bad swam from feralis to speedbarge and got 24 i just stuck to right side and killed them as i saw them still hoping tanaris is better though its a long swim and swiming is to slow to try and chase them ... btw drop rate about 50%

Yup, Hinterlands is a bust. Thousand Needles isn't too bad. A mix of Turtle Scale, Heavy Leather, and Thick Leather. There's a rock at 64,51 that the turtles congregate on.

I'll agree with the folks who mentioned Thousand Needles as the best place to farm these scales. There is an island of Stranded Sparkleshell turtles (someone gave the coords as 64,51). There's about a dozen turtles on the island. The respawn rate is good. I got 4 or 5 shells each time I cleared the island. To fill the time between respawns, I jumped in the water and killed the Siltwater Terrapins. The drop rate is at least as good. The terrapins are spaced a little too far apart to make good farming, but they are a good filler between respawns of the Sparkleshells. By the time I'd killed 3 or 4 terrapins, the Sparkleshells were respawning.

Turtle scale was easiest to get in the hinterlands, north of revantusk village, right along the coast. I leveled several skinners there and made lots of gold collecting turtle scale, heavy leather, rugged leather, a few epics and lots of green item drops all from the saltwater snapjaws.

After all the updates I am not sure the area is as productive as it used to be, but at one time is was the best place to farm turtle scale. Now that thousand needles is flooded I guess I'll head down there and see how that works out.

My Mage skinner is now at 77 and can only farm leather in this great spot. After about 40 or so turtles I have yet to see any turtle scale drop, might be too high lvl to farm turtle scale there anymore.

Tanaris isnt too bad. Though they are rather far apart. Swimming isnt bad if you are a Druid.

I went the Tanaris Steeljaw Snapper route too... I farmed from very tip top n.e'ern point down south to coast N of Caverns of time, just in that little crescent area E of Gad. and got 40+ scales in a little over an hour. *****BEST advice you can have for this area is to create a "/tar ste" MACRO! OMG this will cut your "hunting" time down to a fraction! No more trying to scope area and see underwater etc, bc they are kind of few and far b/t sometimes. Then all you have to do is mount up, and fly over spamming /tar macro and you will instantly find next one! It's a nice added bonus as well having the Tide Surfer giants there as well to kill along the way for the big mouth clams.

The map shows two areas that you can find them. I went to one area and started farming. Before I could kill and skin the last one, they were respawning already (On my lvl 85 skinner). They also have just as good of a drop rate at the turtles in Tannaris.
They are much closer together and no swimming for the most part. Best place to go IMO.

Great info thank you, I flew back and forth between the two small islands in TN on my 63 monk (skinner) needing these scales for my LW, one round trip (which took 14 minutes including flight time) earned me 16 turtle scales, 11 zesty clam meat, 1 black pearl, 10 thick leather, 7 heavy leather, 17 turtle meat, and two greens droped. 14 minutes, not a bad haul. Thanks again for this info!

In swamp of sorrows the Sorrowmurk Snapjaw is an ideal candidate for farming. Unlike any of the others, the Sorrowmurk Snapjaw is not few in number and in a localized location. It inhabits the entire area near the coast, and in good numbers. And like the others it has a 50% drop rate or equivalent.

It's proximity near Stormwind also makes it feasible for Alliance players to quickly train, and auction out.

As per wonderful information provided by AllynTal (and those who replied to his post) I flew back and forth between the two islands in Thousand Needles (one on either side of Freewind Post) and every single turtle I skinned dropped a scale.
Here were my results after about 15 minutes (I only needed 68 scales)
68 - Turtle Scale
21 - Big Mouth Clam
3 - Heavy Hide
2 - Thick Hide
33 - Thick Leather
31 - Heavy Leather
2 greens worth about 10,000g (selling on auction house for people interesting in transmog)
opening the clams gave me
21 - Zesty Clam Meat
1 - Golden Pearl

I can't imagine there is a better place for farming the scales, happy hunting

Late 2023 Dragonflight experience:

I tried Thousand Needles first, the big island to the east with the most turtles. Lots of turtles, good skinning, got decent scales from the first clear. Flew to the 2nd island in the middle and some lower levels were doing lower level stuff so I left it/them alone and flew back and waited for the respawn. After the first respawn, decided it wasn't worth it and went to Tanaris. The northern area technically has turtles but it's no good. However, the south east corner is pretty good. My skinner is a druid so turtles in water isn't a problem with automatic shifting from flight to aquatic form and back again.

There are plenty on the beach though too, so for someone less inclined to get in the water, clear the beach first, then do water until the beach starts to respawn maybe.

1KN good if you're the only one working it, Tanaris south east good, haven't tried Hinterlands but that's next if I end up needing more scales later.
