I finally got one after farming for about half an hour on the Naga cave south of Feathermoon, Feralas.

I was kinda annoyed at the beginning because every time I opened a Big-Mouth Clam I was hoping that was the one which would drop it. After a few minutes I decided to wait until I had a few clams and clicking them all very fast and what do you know, it dropped and the wait seemed shorted, hehe

Anyway, I killed the following number of mobs before seeing it drop:
24 x Hatecrest Serpent Guard
25 x Hatecrest Sorcerest
2 x Lord Shalzaru

Basically I cleaned the cave 2 times before it dropped and meanwhile I got the following:
36 x Fish Oil
05 x Moonberry Juice
12 x Raw Spotted Yellowtail
32 x Zesty Clam Meat
01 x Small Lustrous Pearl
01 x Iridescent Pearl
01 x Black Pearl

I liked this cave because it has decent respawn time, by the time I got to the top, the lower portion and the entrance already have some new mobs. The entrance to the cave is around 26,66.

The Snapjaws at the sea level area of east Hinterlands is also a great place to farm these. Respawn is very fast, nobody is ever there and Gammarita is the only mob that will agro.

Was farming Mithril on my DK and dropped down here to check for deposits before hearthing. Ended up farming the turtles for about 20 min and got 3 black pearls. Also a great place for skinning.

I, second the suggestion, that the coast line of (Eastern) Hinterlands, is by far the best place to get this item Black Pearl .

After arriving at the LOA, my in-game stopwatch read 00:04:54 (four minutes, fifty-four seconds) before I got the drop, from the drop. (The clam from the turtle that dropped the aforementioned Item.

So if your server economy is outrageous (present price for the four available: cheapest being 199 gold), this is the best place to go.

I will continue farming to supply additional data for the Wowhead Client.

I recommend using this client to assist in the proliferation of the drop data in this site.

Big-Mouth Clam is the drop you are searching for, for the Black Pearl - So keep that in mind when you're spazzing out because it hasn't dropped - I did at first. I've got three more now, timer reads 10 minutes.

If you go to the Hinterlands to farm this (which I HIGHLY recommend, btw), there are a lot of turtles in the water. So if you are a class (like a DK with Path of Frost, a priest with Levitate, etc) just go out to the water and farm if you have someone kill stealing all your mobs (like I did). There are quite a few out there, and it is much more quiet.

lvling up enchanting on my warrior atm, and well the black pearl is 90g each on AH on my server... so i went to wowhead looked it up and saw there was a chance for it to drop from the turtles south in tanaris on the beach. and well there are many turtles.
it took me maybe 15mins and i had 5 pearls.

As a lvl 44 Warrior (Tank) I farmed the area north of Revantusk village, spending about 1.5 hours...
That effort yielded 1 golden pearl, 1 small irredescent pearl and 1 black pearl along with two lockboxes (have a guild rogue opening them - surprise?) and one troll hide bag. Still need another black pearl, and it is taking a while. Other buddies have spoken of farming for a couple of hours before hitting a black pearl.

If you consider the standard shell drops (for cash) and the happy surprises (troll hide bag) then it is well worth farming the area.

If you are going to do this, pick up the quests held by the fishing trainer on the dock.

On Fizzcrank server there is a guy who has 59 black pearls in stacks of 4-5 for sale for 25g in AH.I want to ask him so badly where he gets all his pearls from but he likely won't tell. It just seems outrageous that one person have that many.

I'm going to try my luck farming it before I spend at the AH.

While leveling enchanting on my 70 DK, i needed a black pearl to make my truesilver rod. There were none on the AH, so I came here to wowhead. After reading the comments, I went and farmed the turtles in the Hinterlands. I don't know how many turtles I killed, but I ended up with 156 Sparkled Shell Fragments. Over 2 hours later, I had 4 golden pearls, and I finally got not one, but two black pearls in a row. Figures.

In short, if you decide to farm the turtles for a black pearl, be aware that you may not get one in the first 5 kills. If you do, more power to you, and FML.

Coastline, Tanaris , i done one run and from 18 clams i got 6 Black pearls.
So that's my suggestion where to farm em.

Defiantly Tanaris, 1st kill golden pearl, 2nd kill black pearl. It couldn't have been easier. Not to mention taking a portal to the Caverns of Time basicaly puts you on top of the Steeljaw Snappers

Basically impossible to get on AH on my realm (AggamagganEU), but quite easy to farm.

I went to The Hinterlands and killed the Saltwater Snapjaw there, looted 22 Big-mouth Clams before I got my Black Pearl and it took me around 20 minutes.

Found within 5 minutes of pearl farming north of Revantusk Village on the eastern beaches of the Hinterlands. There are plenty of turtles there and they drop iridescent, black and sometimes golden pearls.

I have found an interesting issue related with clams. and it seems to happen rather for a lot of stuff.
for example if you are wanting a rare item, you mostly never get it if you have one clam and opens it, even if you take 100 of them but open it each time you have 1.
but if you have 20 or 30 and you open them all at the same time..it seams to give more rare item than normally does.
as if the random of if depends on how much you have at the moment of opening them.
even more i think that if you do "nothing else" but to open them (not even open a new bag) works even better specially at last.

and its due to empirical data so may be was just luck but...as i was looking for iridiscent pearl. i grab about 50 shells and nothing, but opening them asap.
then tired of it gater about 20, and when i returned because just passed a level, so was only opening for the food. found it. (almost in the end).
it happened quite a few times (not with the same character) so after readthing this, all takes some new meaning.

If you choose to kill the turtles in Tanaris, while you're on the beach you can also kill the giants there(if you're high enough level). They also drop clams.

Do clams still drop since the shattering? I've been trying to farm them for one of the black pearls for the runed truesilver rod that I need. Every mob I go to that used to drop them hasnt dropped a single clam. Can't findy any of these pearls on the AH either.

Enchanters and Black Pearl hunters rejoice! I found some Bloodwash Naga on the South Eastern Coast of Blasted Lands that drop Big-Mouth Clams often.

Tidal Striders are the best to farm for these. Trust me.

I was originally farming the turtles in Tanaris, but I got tired of underwater travel and found these guys. They're knee deep in the water close to Gadgetzan, and they're pretty big, you can't miss them.

After I had earned 14 Zesty Clam Meats from the turtles, I killed three of these guys. They all dropped clams. One had a Black Pearl in it.

I finished my stack of Zesty Clam Meats to sell on the AH, and I ended up with another Black Pearl.
They're about a 33% drop rate, plus or minus a few, which is a really good rate seeing as how you can kill two or three at a time.

That's 6 shells, and 2 Black Pearls from these guys. Good Farming Folks.

I've found that the Bloodwash Naga in the eastern coast of the Blasted Lands have a pretty decent droprate of big-mouthed clams. I spent a bit less than half an hour questing there and got 23 clams, wich yielded 2 black pearls and 1 golden pearl.
As if that wasnt enough, they also drop Runecloth from time to time. I ended up with two stacks and a couple of loose cloths.

2010-12-13 - One off Murlock in SE corner of Swamp of Sorrows, another off Naga on Blasted Lands shore. Actually went to the zone for this, as they're going for 50g on Nathrezim. Tried turtles first - no joy. Started playing with the new quests and bumped into it at the Murlocks, then Nagas.

Well i did some researching on the best way to find these clams. The Tidal Striders might be a 86% drop rate. but there is not as much as them and you will most likely find yourself waiting for them to respawn.

The Bloodwash Nagas (barbarians, zealots, enchantress, acolyte) have roughly a 41% drop rate on them but there is twice as many of them as tidal striders. and they have camps of about 15-20 of them. rotate camps, plus the cave. and you pick up about 50-60 clams in about 20-30 minutes.

There location is the blasted lands in the most south-eastern portion of the zone, or search wowhead for a better location =)

Spent almost an hour at Revantusk... about 80 turtles, 5 clams, no pearls.

Went into the portal down the middle tunnel of Mauradon (10 minutes).... 15 turtles, 13 turtle scale, 3 big clams, 1 black pearl! The only bad thing is they don't respawn. You have to let the instance reset by leaving for a few minutes.

Go to Fizzle and Pozziks speedbarge in Thousand Needles, you can get there thru mudsprucket in Southern Barrens, by going to Westreach Summit at the wind rider. Then take the boat to the speedbarge by asking some guy at westreach. At the speedbarge, accept the quest Down in the Deeps, a lvl 40 quest given by Razzerik, which will give you underwater breathing and increased swim speed. Then go kick some turtle ass.
I killed about 30 to get me 10 clams and 1 Black Pearl.

Agreeing with the other posters-- the best place at the moment to farm for the pearls is the Tidal Striders. They're on a fast respawn timer, so no competition from at-levels doing the quests.

My 44 paladin farmed for a black pearl for her enchanting. I opened 100 clams. (It took a while to get 100 clams, but if you are the right class you can gather up a few of these guys at a time. Obviously if you're an 85, you can one-shot them, but for folks at-level grinding...)

I gained about a level doing this.

Out of the 100 clams I opened, I got:
100 Zesty Clam Meat
1 Small Lustrous Pearl
5 Iridescent Pearls
6 Black Pearls

Not bad, considering I needed just one black pearl! (And the only person posting them to the AH at the moment is selling them for 100g.)

i was farnming this stupid pearl for one and half hour slaying turtles in The Hinterlands. I killed more than 100 turtles and i didnt get more than 20 clams and actually I have only 2 Small Lustorus Pearl... I guess i wont skill that stupid enchanting never!

I just farmed 60x from Tidal Striders in Tanaris
Took about 36 minutes in total (12 minutes for defeating 50xTidal Striders that dropped 20x)

and I got
4x + 1x + 2x ( + 60x, of course )

Yes, I think this will. I have been farming in the Hinterlands and have gotten more trash than clams; 18 Turtle Meat though...now if I can just find the recipie for it...

Okay, so since I had never been to Tanaris on this toon, I had to run there. Since this morning when I posted this, I ran 3 random instances, so it took a while to get here. I have to say, that after I DID get here, I picked up the quest for "Clamette Surprise", and a couple others to do while I farmed; got the Black Pearl with my second Big Mouth Clam.

Got one black pearl and one golden pearl and...90 zesty clam meat after an hour grinding the Tidal Striders in Tanaris.
Black pearls go for 400G at the AH whenever someone bothers to sell one.

So farming was deffinatly worth it =)

tidal striders in tanaris drop the big mouth clams about 60 percent of the time plus they respawn quickly and have very little trash drops to fill your bags with. although after about 120 big mouth clams and no black pearls im about to hang myself.

Got three while just questing along the coast of Swamp of Sorrows. Might be dumb luck. Got it off Murlocks and the Crabs. For me 11 Big-Mouth Clams made 3 Black Pearls and 11 Zesty Clam Meat.

Was doing another quest and picked up 2 more Big-Mouthed Clams, and found another Black Pearl! That's a 30 percent drop rate.

I guess Im the unluckiest in the history of WOW! Been 3 hours in Hinterlands & Tanaris Ive killed more turtles than the alliance has healers and I just dont understand why the BlackPearl eludes me. Yeah , over 10 stacks of Zesty even more of the other junk and managed 1 golden ,2 iridescent,2 small lustrous. Im useing a lvl 85 mage to farm and ready to punch a hole in my screen.

Tidal Strider in Tanaris, I just finished farming about 40 clams got 4 Black Pearls and 1 Golden Pearl. An 85 hunter with a water walking potion makes this very fast. I made a simple macro.

40 clams took me about 15 minutes. I used one for my shamans enchanting, the other 3 I put on the AH for 100g per. At that rate, 1600g per hour. I doubt you could sell many as they aren't used for much but for a quick cash boost for power leveling it's not bad. if you could sell 16 an hour though... that's 38,400g a day.

Post-Cata, these clams can also be fished up on the shores of the Blasted Lands.

Nice little spot to fish, just south of the Swamp of Sorrows border. There is a little hill that you can stand on with no aggro.

Also great place to farm Darkclaw Lobsters, Summer Bass and Glossy Mightfish.

having looked on AH on Eldre'Thalas and saw they cost well over 120g I decided to check here. Went to Tanaris and farmed Tidal Striders gently. after 31 kills I had 5 black pearls, 1 irridescent and 3 greens. Also fished some floating wreckage there - am very pleased :)

Just to inform you all, there is an island in Thousand Needles (65.52) that has a messload of Stranded Sparkleshell turtles. The level range of the turtles are 40 - 44 and the respawn is less than 5 mins. There are between 15 and 20 turtles per respawn. These turtles drop the Big Mouth Clams and Turtle Meat that can be used for cooking.

Druids VS Tidal Strider
The water the Tidal Strider run around in is too deep to use your Flight Form without jumping out of the water, but if you want to quickly farm these drink an Elixer of Giant Growth (or any other size-increase item) and you'll be just large enough to be running instead of swimming, so you'll have fast access to your Flight Form.

The Black Pearl is used by Enchanters to make the Runed Truesilver Rod.

Camminatore delle Mareehave the best drop rate for a Black Pearl. It will be in the Big-Mouth Clams that they drop. Some people stated that they got it on the 18th clam. I got mine on the 28th, I'd expect anywhere between 5-10 minutes of grinding for this item. Good Luck.

Stranded Sparkleshells in thousand neddles drop Big-Mouth Clams that can contain black pearls.

I can't tell about the drop rates, I was lucky enough to get one black pearl after I cleared the dozens of those turtle that were on the island.

I farmed the Tidal Striders South of Gadgetzen for the better part of about 30 mins on a level 85 Paladin. The tally of the Big-Mouth Clams was:
60 Big-Mouth Clams
3 Black Pearls
2 Iridescent Pearls
1 Small Lustrous Pearl

Very good area to farm for those pearls as well good for Zesty Clam Meat if you're needing to level cooking. :)

I continued to farm because that is what I do, I farm things others won't to make money and had an ending result of:
94 Big-Mouth Clams

4 Iridescent Pearls
1 Small Lustrous Pearl

All this in about an hour. :)

Tidal Striders are the best way to go. Right by them are turtles as well that you can kill at the same time to increase your clam drop. 10 minutes of farming and got a black pearl. Black Pearls on my server are over 500g so if you are in the same situation I highly recommend just taking a few moments to do this.

After reading over the suggestions here I went to kill the Tidal Striders and turtles and Tanaris. While I did get a lot of zesty clam meat, I didn't get anything else after about 2 hours of searching. So I went to the Red Reaches as advised above and killed the naga and got a black pearl within the first 10 minutes. I'd recommend going there.

I read the comments about the Tidal Striders first. I couldn't take it after half an hour. Not a single pearl of any type.

Then I read about the Red Reaches. I flew there to kill Naga. Maybe another half hour there too. But the Red Reaches were much more productive. 1 small lustrous pearl. 2 iridescent pearls. 1 black pearl.

I can't say it's all because of location, but it sure feels that way. Total for both locations it took 62 big-mouth clams to get 1 black pearl.

BTW, there's also the bonus of lots of runecloth if you decide to go for the Naga at Red Reaches.

Best place I found was The Red Reaches in the Blasted Lands. The Bloodwash have a great drop rate for the Big-mouth Clams and a high respawn rate. I gathered 23 clams and recieved Black Pearl x2, Iridescent Pearl x2, Small Lustrous Pearl and Zesty clam meat x23.

If you don't yet have a 45+ level character to get to Tanaris, you can do this:
There is a quest in Feralas, given by a gobling standing on the road right on top of the Feathermoon Stronghold (sorry, I forgot the quest's name, btw, the reward might be useful to druid). While doing the quest you will be required to "zip" the shore striders http://www.wowhead.com/npc=5359#map (they are elite, but after you "zip" them with the device the goblin gives you, they are no longer a threat). The device will work also after you apply it 5 times, or w/e the requirement is. These mobs drop big mouth clams at a very good rate. Took me about half an hour to get the black pearl. In my realm the price on black pearl can go as high as 80-100 gold, and that's something a newbe cannot afford.

After farming tidal striders for an hour i didn't receive no black pearls, got a couple of iridescent though!
But then i read the comments about blasted lands so i went to "the red reaches" and killed a couple of nagas before getting my black pearl, Maybe i got lucky but i suggest there :)

Took advice from this thread and killed Tidal Striders south of Gadgetzan for a couple of hours tonight. Decided to quit but continued killing and the second mob dropped the clam that had a Black Pearl.

Something you might want to think about, to make things slightly more effecient...create a macro with any ability you use normally, and add this line:

/use Big-Mouth Clam

This will make absolutely sure any clam you pick up gets opened, and you don't have to bother with searching your inventory for it.

I farmed the south end coast of Swamp of Sorrows from 80,90 to 91,63 Killing murlocs and looting Big-Mouth Clams. It took 40 clams to loot 40 Zesty Clam Meats to get 1 Black Pearl.

Edit: I checked the AH just out of curiosity to see how much the Black Pearl would sell for and there are about 12 of them for under 15g. Oh well, I guess I didn't need to farm. But I did save gold! Lol.

I can tell for sure that the easiest way to farm Black Pearl is to kill Tidal Strider located at the beach in Tanaris just North-West to the entrance to Cavern Of Time. I was just there farming and i got 1 Golden Pearl 2 Iridecent Pearl and 1 Black Pearl in 10 minutes, maybe i was lucky but this was the best spot i found to farm it. Hope this helps for Enchanters and other who may need it :)

100 clams from Naga in Blasted Lands and 100 from the Tidal Striders in Tanaris =

200 Clam meat and not 1 single pearl of any kind............

I can confirm that the Tidal Striders near Gadgetzan in Tanaris are a good farm place. The respawn time is fast. I never had to wait for any of them, and you can also kill the few turtles that are there. In 15 minutes worth of continuous grind I got 2 Black Pearls, 5 Golden Pearls and 2 Iridiscent Pearls. Here's a great place to farm Black Pearls in the Blasted lands The Red Reaches. Here is also another great guide describing the drop rate but for Iridescent Pearls (Drop rate info)

There is really no need to go to Tanaris for these.
Blasted Lands and Swamp of Sorrows (see other comments for details) are easier to reach, and you can kill the mobs faster since you won't have to wade through water.

From the posts before, people have suggested either farm at Tanaris or The Red Reaches, Blasted Lands.

I farmed around 45mins at Tanaris with around 40 Big-Mouth Clam, but with no luck. Afterwards, I decided to drop by The Red Reaches once more, 5 minutes later, Hello Black Pearl.

At Tanaris kill Tidal Strider and Steeljaw Snapper.
One stack gives me:
20x Zesty Clam Meat
2x Iridescent Pearl
1x Small Lastrous Pearl
And 1x Black Pearl

121 clams gave me 2 Perla Dorata, 1 Piccola Perla Lucida, and 1 Perla Iridescente. The 122nd gave a Perla Nera.

Farming the clams went really well, though, in Tanaris. The whole process took right around 30 minutes. I farmed Camminatore delle Maree & Morsicatore Mordiferro on the shore near Gadgetzan.

This took me an hour and a half to find!

Went to Tanaris to kill the striders.... no luck

then went to the red reaches in blasted lands and killed about 40 nagas and one finally dropped, i also got 2 golden pearls and 1 lustrous

61 zesty clam meat before I found one. If at first you don't succeed, pearl-hunting may not be your sport.

Haha, I killed 8 mobs for a quest the I got two clams and found a black pearl in both of them.

Expect a value of these to fall drastically as MoP comes out - no more enchanting rods will be crafted :(
