I dont know when these turn yellow/green/gray but at cooking lvl 150 they are still red.

i found that farming the tangy clam meat for alliance (and maybe horde if you feel like risking being so close to menethil harbour) was best off of the bluegill raiders (http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=1418) since they not only have one of the highest drop rates of thick-shelled clams but they also have relatively high silver drop rates (usually at least 0.7-1.4) and is ridiculously close to town so you can even sell off the most useless of vendor trash.

it took a little time but this recipe is what got me to around 180 cooking before i moved on.

Good food for twink bracket 10-19.
+6 to stamina (and +6 to spirit, but who cares) for 15 min. Just do not die! ;)
Check your auction for cheap reagents or go farm mobs.
