This is the key used to open the door between Loch Modan and the Searing Gorge. It is obtained by completing a quest line that starts with killing Margol the Rager (http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=5833) and obtaining Margol's Horn (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=10000). The quest ends at "At Last!" (http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=3201)

As said you use the key to get in Searing Gorge (as a short cut after completing the long chain + proven yourself worthy of not having to travel all trough Badlands and the long distances).

So anyway the trick is that you can get trough without the key if you are a Hunter or Shaman. Simply do like the following movie clip:

Me want this key. Why not orc get this key when orc want it? Orc will kill dorfs until orc has this key.

The key is pretty much redundant since they put a flight path in at Thorium Point all those patches ago.

Used to be that you either went through from Lakeshire, across burning steppes, and through blackrock mountain, or around the back of horde town Kargath (not exactly ideal for alliance). Then you would do this quest first up so you could get back easily.

Now, with the flight path in thorium point it's just a novelty key, considering you have to be in searing gorge to do the quest anyway, the first journey is just as long.

Tip for all Warlocks :D
Use hellfire when ur standing almost inside the door and it must say that ur inside Searing Gorge.
youre gonna die and ur gonna spawn on the Searing Gorge Spirit healer and just run to ur corpse.
Taaaa-daaa ur inside Searing ^^
(ps: ur gear won't take dmg since u die while using hellfire)

As any class with a DoT... get naked (so as not to damage your gear). Then proceed to pull a spider from 300yds away from the gate while constantly refreshing your DoT (so the creature does not actually take damage). Then let the spider kill you while you are hugging the gate. This will spawn your ghost at the Searing Gorge Spirit Healer instead of Loch Modan. Although, you have to watch out for the NPCs on the road and make sure that they don't kill your spider.

Note: *Renewing DoTs on a creature non-stop causes them to be pulled much, much further then a normal, retreating creature would be able. This is why you will see mobs "Evade Bugged", it's because people kept trying to damage the creature as they were running away.

2.4.2 and still working with the hunter/shaman exploit, just did it, although it's a bit more trickier then what the video shows, it seems they have attempted to fix it, but I still did it fine. :)

It still works! =)

I (shammy) stood outside, against the gate, and used Far Sight on the lower left corner on the gate just so the sight was inside the gate (your view is kinda bugged in the actual gate), turn the camera view so that the lever is shown (just a bit) in the lower right corner (easier when hiding the Right Actionbars) and click to open the gate!

This is working for version 2.4.2
Time of date: May 3rd.

As the member of the Horde I can't get the key, but an Engineer can make a charge to unlock the door at 200 skill.

As of 3.0.8 this 'trick' no longer works for hunters. Eagle Eye can't target past the gate.

If your horde, and a blacksmith,
the Arcanite Skeleton Key could open the door just fine. Just make sure you have the 2 that you get from creating it. Otherwise you will get stuck inside the pass. One key to get in, one key to get out...

Is there any way to get in without the key? (I'm not an engineer, and my Blacksmithing is only lvl 70.)

I'm Horde, but I don't want to kill or raid or anything. I just want the exploration credit. :) It's the last thing I need for "Explore Eastern Kingdoms".

Is the key needed for exit?

I just let a Blood Elf paladin into the tunnel in hopes that the key is needed to exit.

The chance to trap a Horde player in the tunnel was just too tempting.

Edit: D'oh! Forgot about the lever's. Doesn't work unless he's as out of it as I was!

A blacksmith's Arcanite Skeleton Key (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=15872) will also open the gates. Though why you would use one to do so is beyond me.

Patch 3.2 this still works. You have to work at it for a second. Your vision is obstructed since you can only farsight on the gate but if you move your screen around you still eventually get it.

You keep this key if you got it as alliance, then transferred factions. I got it on my Draenei pally, who has since been changed to a Blood Elf. I still have it.

There are several solutions -

The one which I have used was to die in Dun Morogh, then run as a ghost all the way to a spirit healer in searing gorge, relog, and then resurrect at the spirit healer inside searing gorge.

Unfortunately, I found out quite soon later that you can either just run up from Burning Steppes' Blackrock Mountain all the way into searing gorge, or theres a path next to the horde outpost Kargath, Badlands (at 2.4, 62.7) which leads straight to Searing Gorge too.

Don't make the same mistake I have, I feel like a moron :P

Interestingly enough if you are Allliance and faction change to Horde you will keep the key, whereas other Alliance-only keys are lost. So if you are planning on going Horde anytime soon make sure to do this quest, seeing as it may be your last chance to get it.

Although not a recommended method you can get into Searing gorge easily if you don't have a key by having someone use their Direbrew's Remote to get you into Blackrock Depths. Once there you can get yourself killed and resurrect at Thorium Point graveyard.

With this latest patch, it appears Blizzard has removed this key from the game.. for Horde players that is. All three of my former-Alliance characters had their Searing Gorge keys deleted upon logging in this evening, and I found a 'Solid Gold Coin' item in my pack instead.. minor compensation, perhaps?

In any event, as I do not have a sufficently leveled Alliance character at this time to check and see if the quest to attain it was modified in any way; I'm standing in front of the gate right now and it still requires the key.. hmm..

Another way around it is to have a Titanium skeleton Key which equals a lockpicking skill of 400. I used that to open the gate. No deaths or anything. May be able to use a different skeleton key of a lower level. See if a Blacksmith will make you some.

Using Eagle Eye to push the lever still works as of 4.0.1.

I did it about 5 minutes ago and all you need to do is get the eagle eye to hit the roof of the inside and then push the lever.

A good mace that helps is:
/cast !Eagle Eye

If you use this macro you can keep casting it without having to exit Eagle Eye and then cast a new one. You can use this trick for Unlimited Range on the Eagle Eye too.

Good luck if you're trying to do this and have fun with the macro.

As of Cataclysm, this key is useless.

The door separating Searing Gorge from the Valley of Kings in Loch Modan has been removed.

The key remains in your inventory if you already have it, but it is most likely unobtainable now, as evidenced by the removal of the Keymaster achievement.

Will Blizz ever stop annoying us? They took out The Keymaster achievement, without a whisper or passing comment, not even a Feat of Strength. This sucks for all of us who did the endless rep grinding for the keys, yet they leave the Key to Searing Gorge on our keyring which was only a small quest chain, that was removed......

Even though patch 4.0.3a removed the gates on this tunnel, this key was not removed like so many other old keys was.
The key is no longer obtainable, but if you had it before the patch, you will still have it after.

Stonewrought Pass (connecting Loch Modan and Searing Gorge) no longer has a locked gate. Thus no need for the key which has been removed from the game.

A blue post confirms that come patch 4.2, the keyring and select keys of unlimited use will be removed from the game, including this one. Wonder what Pebblebitty will do now...
