One of the few ways to reduce spell damage, its great for tanks. Many boss damage abilities are spell based, and there are already plenty of ways to mitigate physical damage.

Recommended if you wanna round out your tanking set a bit.

102,000 Magic DR if using this gem.

2.0M DR from blocked attacks. If using the 1% BR gem would give 20,000 more DR.

PS. Math is probably way off, this is just what I'm thinking about right now.

Wondering if you should take this over Eternal Shadowspirit Diamond?
I have done the maths for you!

Based upon two fights (Magmaw and Omnotron Defense System) for a Paladin tank currently wearing this gem in socket.
All stats are assumed that Holy Shield is always up, giving a 40% blocked value. Chance to block also factors in here, but my chance to block is 42% (about average for a Paladin tank with full heroic dungeon and reputation gear, "pre-raid").
Also, these stats could be way off depending if resistances are performed after the reduction or before. I have assumed reduction is performed after resistances here.

Magmaw

Melee damage taken: 2,039,588
Blocks: 21
Total Blocked: 838,235

Total if 1% extra blocked: 838,235 / 0.4 * 0.41 = 859,190.875
Extra blocked: 859,190.875 - 838,235 = 20,955.875

Spell damage taken: 510,026 (at 98%, since I wear the gem)
With 2% extra: 510,026 / 0.98 = 520,434.7
Extra spell damage reduced: 10,408.7

Omnotron

Melee damage taken: 3,732,992
Blocks: 71
Total Blocked: 1,310,240

Total if 1% extra blocked: 1,310,240 / 0.4 * 0.41 = 1,342,996
Extra blocked: 32,756

Spell damage taken: 655,584 (98% again)
With 2% extra: 655,584 / 0.98 = 668,963
Extra spell damage reduced: 13,379

Results

For a paladin tank, on these two particular fights, you should wear Eternal Shadowspirit Diamond. However, there may be some other fights which introduce more spell damage than melee which you can reduce more than extra block value. Perhaps Conclave of Wind?

your math is wrong for magmaw physical damage. or you misplaced a number.

838,235 / 0.4 * 0.41 = 2,090,577.7

......no. shoulda been tipped off when the second number was much lower than the first.

((838,235 / 0.4 ) *.41) = 859190.875, meaning... 20955.875 more damage blocked.

as far as looking at the gem, it is going to be most useful on the characters with least resistances. However, since tanks are generally going to be buffed with MotW or Bok, this gem is less useful than the blocking or armor one in almost all cases, especially if your shaman is using their resist totem, a pally has on the resist aura, or you are packing a prismatic elixer.
