this are necessary for the "crafting" of shadowmourne. they drop form bosses in IC 25(no word if drop from 10 man HC or extra chance to drop on 25 HC). it's similar to the crafting of the Ulduar legendary mace or Vanilla WoW class specific staffs from Naxxramas.

I believe one of the most pressing inquiries regarding these is that if they are a shared drop or not. IE. Can two people on the same quest pick them up? If not, Which is probably the case, expect to see very few of these as it may take up to 6-7 weeks for one part of the quest line.

They are binds when picked up, meaning scrubs wont likely get (60) of these much less with ease.
Thats a good thing I though everyone would be running around with one of these Shadowmourne.

It definitely seem possible indeed to attain the 25 Primordial Saronite, hard but possible, and with the ability for normal ICC to fulfill the quest objectives and hence the ability to PuG them, it doesn't seem hard. I believe that the only difficult part pass the 25 Primordial Saronite is the shadowfrost shards.

Because of this, it is quite possible that Blizzard would make it extremely and nearly impossible to attain (Only one ever drops no matter how many are on the quest), just to prevent many from attaining it.

Yet, with this in mind, I only have one question. If only one would drop no matter how many are on the quest, then wouldn't one would drop no matter how many are NOT on the quest? If so, then nobody is on the quest now, (Only the first wing is released, and many of the quests in the chain requires bosses from the 2nd - 4th, which means that no one could have possibly reached this stage.)

With the above paragraph in mind, then my question is: Why didn't it drop from ANY of the four bosses released? It should, although nobody is on the quest, right?

So because of this, logically, the only possibility might be (Big might, I have utterly no idea, my apologies if this is presumptious), is that it drops one per person who have the quest only for that person on the quest.

50 is not easy. Go easy on us. Its Wrath of the Lich King anyway, not Classics. In Classics. . .Yeah. In WoTLK? Heh. I am surprised there is no Welfare Legendaries yet.

Sorry, but i cant see the sense behind all that.
Collecting 60 Shards will take you forever to collect exept you are in your Realms Top 1-3 Guilds and doing every Boss in HM every ID.

It dont seems like any SF Shard dropped yet worldwide, so you really need to be on that quest to have the chance to see it drop.

Thats the most stupid obtaining system of all Legendarys (yet) .

Just to help clear up any miss-understandings that are still out there:

Here is a post I made on the offical forums a couple weeks back that actually got a blue respone. It all but confirms it is indeed only 1 person who can loot the shards.

Also, if you didn't know, the drop rate on these is 25%-50% from normal mode bosses and 51%-100% from hard mode bosses (from official wow armory)

Here's a question for you all. I am a main tank in a guild working on ICC 25. I can go dps spec during trash to get the 1000 souls done, but I have to be there to tank bosses. Is it enough to just be on the quest to pick up the shards, or do you actually HAVE to have the weapon equipped and damage the boss with it in order to be capable of picking up a shard off the boss? Anyone know for sure?

Abandoning the quest manually does not remove the Shadowfrost Shards from your bags, so faction changing shouldn't either. Not all GMs give accurate information.

To clarify, the shards CAN NOT be traded once someone has them. Also, they CAN be given to anyone, on the quest or not. We tested it out in my guild run for curiosity sake, had to petition the shard to me to get it :) Also 1/2 the raid rolled on it so make SURE its on ML and the ML'er knows the shards have to go to you or they may end up all over the place :P

As of March 2, 2011, I'm 30/50 Shadowfrost Shards. To answer someone's question, for these items to be seen on the loot table, at least 1 player must have the quest http://www.wowhead.com/quest=24548. If a boss is killed, and no one w/ the quest is eligible to receive loot for that kill, they won't drop.

These only drop in 25m, and there is only 1 shard per boss, IF they drop. You can have all 25 raid members on this part of the quest, and only 1 shard can drop from a killed boss.

So, if you're farming these, make sure no one else is on this quest. Easy way to do that is to make sure you're in the same 5 man party, of your raid group, as the other DKs, Warriors, & Paladins, to see if they have it or not.

If you're the only one, you'll be the only one who can roll on the shard.

There is a current bug where if a player DCs during the fight or is outside of the instance (because they released after dying), it will appear as if they are eligible to roll for the shards. Really, only the player(s) on the quest can do so, you just have to wait for the roll to time out so they auto-pass on the shard. Kinda irritating frankly, because this has happened to me a few time. I check to make sure I'm the only one on the quest, and if I am, I set it to group loot, because only I can roll. If that's not the case, then I set it to master looter.

Yes the shards still drop. I led a 25m Heroic earlier today to work on the mount achievs, and get those who are on the shadowmourne questline the things they need. Apparently only a FDK and myself were the only two working on it. Where as the DK was on the actuall quest to collect the shards, I am currently at the part of blood infusion. I was still able to see the shards if they dropped. So unless Blizz changed something, and with consideration of 2 players on 2 different parts of the questline and both being able to see the drops, one could assume that anyone can see and possibly loot the shards reguardless of where they are at in the questline.

got a icc25man HC run today...got 2 shards out of 12 hc bosses...
had a ticket already open for a different issue..and i also asked about the drop rates for the shards...
GM actualy linked me this very thread saying that tho he can not give me any details about the % of the shards for either normal or heroic bosses wowhead's are too accurate...
after that i checked armory's drop change and it's still "very high - high"
guess armory is outdated or wowhead's database wipe for cataclysm messed the drops changes?

anyway..16 more to go :(

Since the recent patch 25 mode isnt a problem anymore (~~besides ship ofcourse~~; Edit: ok, that scales like crazy now. Fight is over before the frost mage is coming).

Is there a drop rate difference between normal and heroic mode? I dont care about the other items and just want the shards (of course i set LK to heroic mode because of the mount). So can i solo this at normal mode and still have the same drop chance for the shards or do i have to spend a bit more time and set it to heroic?

Shadowfrost Shards are shared loot and only one can drop per boss. Basically, don't group with anyone who has the quest.

Either I have terrible luck, or they stealth-nerfed the drop rate on these. The last 3 weeks I've only gotten 3 Shards from the whole raid.

Here are my stats concerning the loot of the shards. All the shards were looted between 6.0 and 6.0.3:

Week 1: 4 out of 5 bosses
Week 2: 4 out of 11 bosses
Week 3: 4 out of 11 bosses
Week 4: 5 out of 11 bosses
Week 5: 8 out of 11 bosses
Week 6: 5 out of 11 bosses
Week 7: 8 out of 12 bosses
Week 8: 8 out of 12 bosses
Week 9: 5 out of 10 bosses

So finally, it's 51 shards out of 94 bosses namely 54,26%

I was distressed during week 3 because none of the bosses dropped a shard until I hit Lana'thel, after she dropped a shard all the remaining bosses dropped one as well. So if you're like me, don't suspect a glitch right away, these things can be elusive bastards.

After reading all of the Wowhead comments, I was expected each run to gain me 4-5 shards on absolute average. I was happy to find in the two months of farming that I was lucky enough to receive 6-7 on average on 11 bosses kill per run (Dreamwalker was unable to be killed each week due to me being a warrior).

Headed into week 8, hope to finish off the Shards. Currently sit at 46/50

Being a Warrior, I am unable to solo Dreamwalker, so I do 11 bosses each week. This is on 25 Man Heroic so I have a chance to get Invincible's Reins.

Here is what I experienced on my warrior. Have access to my brothers account and his healer classes so I could get all bosses each week. Right about 51% drop 50 drops in 98 Kills. Will update it again when I do it on my Pally and maybe DK.
Week 1 - 1 only had Val & LK left 1 total
Week 2 - 8 did all bosses 9 total
Week 3 - 6 did all bosses 15 total
Week 4 - 7 did all bosses 22 total
Week 5 - 6 did all bosses 28 total
Week 6 - 8 did all bosses 36 total
Week 7 - 6 did all bosses 42 total
Week 8 - 8 did all bosses 50 total
#50 came off of the Lich King so I get to clear it all again next week. :)

While you don't need Shadow's Edge weapon equipped, from my experiment you DO need it your bags. If you've deleted it, you can just obtain another from the quest giver in Light's Hammer.

I'll chronicle my experience with Shadowfrost Shard drops on my Paladin, just in case it helps anyone.

Week 1 - 3 Shards (25N, but Blood Queen on Heroic)
Week 2 - 11 Shards (14 total, 25H all bosses)
Week 3 - 9 Shards (23 total, 25H all bosses)
Week 4 - 11 Shards (34 total, 25H all bosses)
Week 5 - 9 Shards (43 total, 25H all bosses)
Week 6 - 7 Shards (50 total, 25H, 10 / 12 bosses killed)

All done, after 6 weeks! Even with the Lich King still standing for the box of goodies at the end.

Very anecdotal, but it's possible in 8.3 with the ability to transmog old legendaries, they increased the drop rate on these, maybe to 100%. I've been working on this quest for a couple months (technically since WOTLK since I picked it up back then and never finished it) and I would average probably 4-6 of these per full clear.

Today I went in with 7 left to collect (43/50) and I got 7 from the first seven bosses. I have never got that many in a row, but now that I am done the quest and can't get any more, I am not sure if it actually is 100% drop rate or if I just got really lucky this one run, which happened to be the last one I needed and was right after the 8.3 patch.

Started the chain on my fresh 120 DK on patch 8.3. on my 4th week, yet to see more than 9 shard drops.

Week 1: 1 - Total 1 *
Week 2: 7 - Total 8
Week 3: 7 - Total 15
Week 4: 8 - Total 23
Week 5: 8 - Total 31
Week 6: 7 - Total 38
Week 7: 6 - Total 44

*Could kill only Lich King after Frost Infusion quest

week 0 -- 1/1 - 1 (1 dropped from lich king after I picked up the quest that week)
week 1 -- 5/11 - 6

week 4 -- 5/12 - 21 (leveled up enough to use SL bandages to heal the dragon)

As of 10.0.7. It appears that LK no longer has a guaranteed drop of the shard. The drop rate from other bosses seems to be lower as well.
