This is one of two new tanking enchantments in 3.1 (the other being Blood Draining).
This one is unsuitable for ferals, as they are unable to parry, however it would appear to give added migation and threat (from the returned damage) to other tank classes.

Enchant Weapon - Blade Ward
200 Parry rating gives a level 80 player a 4.07% parry chance before diminishing returns. Diminishing returns on that 200 rating alone wil bring it down to 3.9%.

It will be interesting to see what the average mitigation from this enchant is once we have some ideal of its proc rate.

If you are a prot-pally you will have no alternative as tank enchant Blood Draining is bad for Ardent Defender. And if you don't have Ardent Defender I suggest getting it instead of this enchant as it mitigates a lot more damage.
As feral driuds can't parry this is obviously a bad enchant for them.
DK tanks have a better rune which gives static 4% parry.
Warriors have the choice between this enchant and Blood Draining. Both are viable enchants.

We know that Blade Ward no longer stacks on one weapon, but for a DK , if dual wielding these enchants - can the procs off both weapons stack (mongoose style) or will a proc off either weapon simply refresh the duration?

MathiasE's WWS report shows an actual uptime of 5 to 15%. Don't expect it to stack very often.
Even those numbers look low to me, I'll be trying as soon as I can get one of my weapons enchanted.
On the paper, right now I would go with Blood Draining.. at least as a warrior.

i have this enchant on titanguard, and thought id beat up the heroic dummy in IF to test out the procs. i had it stack to 5, 1000 parry rating and 3k -4k dmg. so it does stack,

There has been far to much missunderstanding and missinformation about this enchant.

1. Where does it drop?
A. It drops from all the ulduar25 bosses.
It will also drop of Hardmodes like FL 2 towers or more. (own experiance and LusoChampion's post).
i suggest all guilds to do FL+2 towers (frost and storms are easy).

2. Does it stack?
A. On a prot paladin and prot warrior in our guild single wielding this enchant it stacked 3 times.
So that means that it has no internal Cooldown OR it is extremely low.
I am yet to find a deathknight that wanna try and dualwield this to see if it will stack more.
But 3 stacks is 600 parry rating and 1800-2400 damage on next parry.
(Reportings of 5 stacks for 1000 parry rating and up to 4000 damage)
Confirmed i had 5 stacks. Any screenshots of more stacks would be lovely

3. Can the damaging part CRIT?
A. Yes it can critical strike. It has critted quite alot for me since i sometimes boost with half retri half prot gear and having 50% crit does help my chances ;).

4. How long does it last?
A. The first proc lasts 10 seconds. If it procs again it refreshes the timer to 10 seconds again.
So in reality you can be lucky and having a new proc every 9 second and thus having 100% uptime.
BUT that is pure theory and wont happen. :).
But i had it proc twice at 1 second left so i had it for 28 seconds in a row more then once.

5. Is this a good enchant to get?
A. Well this IS the best avoidance enchant in the game.
And since it also does some damage it does help with threat a bit aswell.
In a full Halls of Stone heroic i did some testing in then it procced 30 times and did 1% of my total damage.
my average dps was 2400 (as protection).
1% dps is still a bit of help on threat. and it certainly is a awsome avoidance enchant.
Any maintank should get this.
Leave the healing for the healers.
If you require the lifeblood enchant as a tank then your guild might need to work a bit on your healers.

Who should get this enchant? (Tanks only)
Warrior=Defenetly
Paladin=Defenetly (Absolutly not the blood draining enchant due to prot pally having ardent defender at 35%!)
Druid=Absolutly NOT
Deathknight=Tricky. i am unsure if dualwielding this enchant will surpass the usefullness of the 4% rune they have.
Any well experianced Deathknight who is willing to dualwield this and tell its proc uptime and parry compared to the static rune.
Please say so :).

i have sold this enchant on my realm for 200g per craft and 900g with my mats (mats are cheap on our realm!).
i must of made 15,000g by now and our guildbank got 15k richer ;).

I testet both new Ulduar Weapon Enchants. Blood Draining took 5 minutes to get results. Blade Ward took me 1h and 37 mintues, till rng was small enough to not have that huge impact at the results.

Enchant Weapon - Blood Draining

Overview:
Your attacks and bleed effect sometimes grant you "Blood Reserve", which heal you for about 400 hp per stack, whenever you health is below 35%.

In-depth:
This Enchant has a hidden cooldown of exactly 10 seconds and a procc chance of about 50% on every hit and bleed attack. The buff has a duration of 20 seconds and stacks up to 5 times. This means that it will take at least 40 seconds to build up the stack, because the hidden cooldown prevents the procc, and another 10 seconds to start a new stack.
Each procc adds 360-440 healing to the stack.

According to this and assuming it will procc instantly after cooldown went off, this enchant is worth 40 HPS.

IMO this enchant is crap, cause ~2000 heal isn´t that much and 50 seconds are too long for this tiny heal.

Enchant Weapon - Blade Ward

Overview:
Your attacks sometime grant you "Blade Warding" which will grant you 200 parry rating per stack with a duration of 10 seconds. If you parry an attack while you have this buff you will additionally deal ~700 damage per stack to the attacker - this will consume the buff.

In-depth:
This Enchant does not have a hidden cooldown and can stack up to 5 times. Sometimes each of 4 hits in a row procced the enchant and sometimes it took 3 minutes for one procc. During my test I attacked with the enchanted weapon 4000 times. The procc occured 111 times which is equal to 2.775% of the attacks. It took 107 minutes to perform this test. According to this the chance to procc is about 3% or 1 PPM. Due to there is no cooldown, a raid enviroment will have massive impact on the efficiency of this enchant. Assuming your are a warrior you will use a 1.6 speed weapon and a shield. In a 5 minute fight with common raid buffs you will perform 225 white hits and one style every GCD. These attacks will result in ~13 proccs in these 5 minutes. If the enchant proccs only after the last procc went off by parring an attack, you will have the additional 200 parry rating for ~43%. If we keep the calculation this simple the enchant is worth 86 parry rating and 30 DPS.

Its not possible to calculate this enchant more exactly. The buff can be refreshed short before it would went off, which will make the enchant more efficient or a buff with 5 stacks which grants you 1000 parry rating can went off, cause every attack at you was dodged and then 1000 parry rating arent worth anything. Due to the huge DR on parry rating the efficiency of 200 parry rating depends on your gear. Additionaly the parry rating granted by the enchant will increase the number of your attacks due to the mechanics of parry-haste which will increase its efficiency by itself.

Even millions of attacks with this enchant will not clearly determine how much this enchant improves your avoidance.

IMO this is the best avoidance enchant, cause it´s the only real avoidance enchant.

Alright, this enchant looks damn awesome, and yes I got it and was dissapointed.
Two things what people who tested it missed:
1) They were attacking dummies who dont attack you back
2) They calculated total time of buff on player by amount of procs multiplied by duration ( 10 seconds given )

Now lets see real numbers. Yes it can stuck, And it can proc 5 times, but only if you are bad avoidance tank. To explain: It doesnt proc very often, but once it does proc you get 200 parry rating, and reurning 600-800 damage per proc stack on your next parry. But important piece of information what is missing here - PARRYING CONSUMES ALL STACKS. My passive parry is 22.9, it was DAMN HARD to see 2 stacks. Here's filtered combat log:

Enough said. I dont know if enchant is broken, or it is intended to work that way. If it is - it is a PVP enchant to face2face versus meleer, and if it is broken - it should not consume buff stacks. As you could see i had +200 parry rating for 5 seconds. next one occured 2 elites later, in about 3 minuts. Horrible procage versus Mongoose, which gives 2% to crit still, minor haste and dodge. Armor i dont count, because it is only 240 or something like that - aint worth mentioning for tanking warrior. And mongoose procs non stop and STAYS ON. I have seen mongoose proccing on initial pull off Heroic THrow for gods sake.

So.. awesome enchant, but not for people who parry a lot. General tanking i am stuck to Mongoose, Life Drain would be nice for encounters in which bosses do some massive, non-parriable AOE damage, so it'd help raid healers a bit.

Lets see if blizzard will change mechanics on it, or it IS an enchant to give parry to people who dont have it to begin with.

P.S. - Looking at how majority of t8 gear lacks parry, it brings me to think that it IS intended to work that way, and only way tanks will start to parry again is when they get a few stacks of this enchant again.. just a thought - look at plate gear from Ulduar 25... all dodge...

The post is misleading. This enchant is not as good as everyone seems to think, and it's really infuriating. But nobody seems to be willing to sit down and do the math with it. The enchant has a proc of around 4%, and a really low uptime, for a very marginal degree of mitigation.

It is entirely likely that the agility enchant provides better threat and avoidance. Do your homework on this one.

This enchant is fantastic, I had my Red Sword of Courage enchanted with it as soon as I found someone who could do it. With it enchanted I went to go try it out. Ice Crown seemed like the best place to try so I attacked single targets. The proc rate wasn't as high as I thought it would be. Then decided to grab a mob of 3 and try it out. The proc rate increased where I was able to proc it once and then 3 seconds late proc it again. Though I have only got it to stack twice. Also tried it in a few heroics to the same effect. So I think you have a higher proc rate if you are fighting mobs. I could be completely wrong but its just my 2cents.

Though is that last night I got Titanguard from Ulduar so have to get the enchant again ^^

To the people suggesting that this is best used when worn with little to no parry gear in order to stack this higher to get more parry rating, your logic is flawed.

200, 1000, even 10,000 rating for 10 seconds is moot if you don't use it to successfully parry.

This enchant functions best when a moment after it procs, you respond with a parry to exaust the damage.

The fact that it stacks merely makes it so that your damage is not "wasted" or overwritten by additional procs of this enchant within the same period.

Thus, 2 stacks doing the same as 2 indivudla procs is the same. However, if you are going over 5, and procing it a 6th or more time within one buff period, you're wasting the effects of this enchantment.

Over all, it would be infinitely superior if it generated two separate buffs. One that gave you 200 parry, stacking up to 5 times, 10 second duration, refreshed on hit. The other being a 600-800 dmg reflect, procing on next parry, stacking up to 5 times, lasting 10 seconds.

That way you could "get it rolling" and in group situations should always have 1, and in prolonged group situations it should roll gradually to 5 stacks and remain. The reflects going off on proc, greatly enhanced by your additional 1000 parry.

Because, however, it does not work like this, the over all effect it has on your mitigation is not as good as Mongoose. The additional agility for the duration is superior. It does however generate more threat then the attack speed and critical bonus you get from mongoose. So it's something to consider.

This enchantment, however, is not worth the materials it costs and needs to be made easier to apply or more powerful in effect.

To reiterate though, you shouldn't be "gearing yourself" to get this enchant to stack 5 times, to "get the most from it," because you're not. You're getting the same as you would from having moderate parry (where in the fractional differences of 200 rating are not yet noticible as they are in higher Parry Rating scenerios), you just see a bigger burst number.

This is a quite intresting enchant for us tanks. Though 200 parry rating is much, it just holds until u parry again, which could just be for a short second! The damage bonus is quite nice for extra aggro though i might add.

In a boss fight against for example patchwerk who hits quickly this would pretty much be usless cause he hits so fast that a parry would come in a matter of seconds. On the other hand agaist for example malygos who hits pretty slow, this would be more effective cause u might have low health after he does that nasty dragon breath on you and need to avoid the next hit, if you're lucky enough to get the proc that is.

But still, this is the ONLY real avoidiance enchant in the game atm, so for a tank that can parry, a 2% chance on a hit to get 200 parry rating for a brief second is better then no chance at all. So i say go get it my tank friends! :)

This enchant seems nice, but after testing it out I'm thinking Mongoose is actually still better.

BW rarely proccs, and although it is capable of stacking it doesn't really proc often enough to do so. At around 20% it only gives you slightly over 2% from that first application, and obviously significantly less from any more. It also expires as soon as you parry...

Mongoose on the other hand gives me about an additional 4% reduct to damage (at ~ 62% damage reduct from armor before buffs,) and is up at least half the time, making it significantly more consistent.

Just an intresting little tid-bit that I've found..The effect can proc on the second, third, and fourth hit of Hammer of the Righteous, and infact I've had it proc twice within one hammer cast (and four bounces).

As for the PPM I've done a few tests and have come up with ~1.4 PPM which, with the effect lasting its full duration is ~28% uptime.

I'm kind of disapointed with this enchant as its proc rate is all over the place, sometimes getting 3 in a row and sometimes not having it proc for 2 minutes straight. I guess it's time to go back to the 'ole Mongoose.

Are people only testing this on dummies? I use this in heroics with mostly heroic and a few boe/emblem items on my tank and I see it up on every pull, rarely ever stacking past 1 or 2 (3 is the highest I've seen) times. For the couple hundred gold it cost me for this enchant, I'm quite pleased with its up time and added mitigation/threat. Not sure about Ulduar level raids, but definitely useful to those people that don't like raiding and do heroics only or the early Naxx tanks.

I think this enchant would serve warriors quite well. Though it is true that Mongooose procs more often, what people fail to realize is that the art of balancing avoidance stats is a tricky one. Warriors benefit from all avoidance defensively, but only directly from blocks offensively. I say directly because I'm well aware of Revenge. When they block, that's Damage Shield and rage gain. If the warrior has Figurine of the Colossus procc'd, that's also life gain. When they dodge or parry, that's nothing but avoiding the attack altogether. which is still good, don't get me wrong. However, you'll usually find yourself with just as much of each of the other avoidance stats as your block, and about twice your block if not more than that when dodge and parry are combined. This means with the exception of Shield Block, you're not blocking nearly as much as you'd like.

This enchant says "It's okay to have a lot of parry and not be a Death Knight." The more the initial proc happens and the higher your parry rate, the more the damage proc occurs. Of course, it seems that it still comes down to personal taste. But I for one do not think I would be disappointed with this.

Does the damage this enchant inflicts go towards your current target, or towards the target you parried?

So I haven't seen any raw data for this enchant in a while, I am not good with the calculations but I can give you the raw data if interested.

In 1 run of Heroic Utgarde Keep I had the follow occur(i am removing misses, dodges & parries as enchant can not proc off these):

Of 1,247 attacks(Melee, Shield Slam, Shockwave, etc...) the enchant procced 38 times, It never stacked above 3 stacks during the instance.

Damage from enchant occurred 19 times totaling 16,919 damage and accounting for 1.9% of my total damage, please keep in mind that it is possible, I went the entire time the enchant was up without parrying an attack as my dodge and block are both higher than my parry. Average hit was 890 with a max of 1805 and a min of 663, unfortunately I do not know at how many stacks the enchant was removed and damage occurred as the damage does increase as the enchant stacks.

Further testing on the target dummies show that as the enchant stacks its effect is diminished, I am not sure if this is normal but I thought I would throw it out there anyways.

These are the increases to my parry percentage for each stack.

1 stack - 2.74%
2 stacks - 2.39%
3 stacks - 2.09%
4 stacks - 1.85%
5 stacks - 1.64%

My personal parry as a warrior is base 17.86% at 5 stacks my parry is 28.57%, but please keep in mind over the course of the entire instance I never stacked more than 3, I can say however it is possible to stack 5 but extremely rare to do so at this point.

I hope some of you guru's can figure out a little more with this, I know the parse size is fairly low but hey its data.

Edit, I did forget to add in my damage from damage shield and Deep Wounds, I am unsure if it can proc from these but here is the data.

As of 3.2 this enchant's procrate seems to have been significantly increased. It procs quite often during single target fights and is almost guaranteed while fighting several targets if you're using Hammer of the Righteous. The increased proc rate also means it stacks more often. I see my meager 18% parry chance increase to a quite lovely 25%. I'd say this enchant is really worth it's mats and the effort to get it.

I avoided this enchant like the plague until rumours such as this appeared following 3.2.

I just got a new weapon tonight, my online/friendly Enchanter does not have Blood Draining so I took the punt and went for Blade Warding.

I think it has indeed been improved and my dummy test (so no haste buffs etc) shows the proc-rate nearer 1.3ppm with an uptime closer to 20% (using a mod called Proculas).
1.3ppm is more like the proc rate of our old favourite Mongoose.

Will be gathering extensive data in coming Raids but for now my impression is: proc-rate buffed in 3.2.

UPDATE: while I don't have raw data to present my impression following several raids with this is less positive and I can't confirm an increased proc-rate or uptime. Crucially the Dummy test is void as they don't hit back, cause parries and thus consume the buff.
I guess a proper test is needed, perhaps against PTR Patchwerks.

For now:

"I remain..........unconvinced".

Since this enchant seems to have no Internal CD, i wonder how much it will proc on a Prot Warrior that spams Cleave in multi-mob situations while using Devastates/Shield Slams/etc at the same time. I Cleave 3 targets every 1.50 seconds while using my other abilities at the same time. Sounds like Blade Ward might have a decent procrate on a Prot Warrior that way.

Since I don't see it mentioned here, but I recall seeing on I think the scroll comments I'm just going to throw in that this enchant is also self-efficient as parrying an attack would increase the speed of your next melee (which can proc it) so the buff itself tries to increase your chances of proccing it again.
I personally think this enchant is the one and only currently for Paladins and Warriors (Druids definately no and I think DKs are better off with Runes). Mongoose is nice, but 2% dodge especially with ICC coming up is definately not better than this.

When this enchant procs, you get the Blade Warding buff.
According to Wowhead:

¤ This buff can stack up to a maximum of 5 times, increasing parry rating by up to 1000 and inflicting as much as 3000-4000 damage on your next successful parry.
¤ The proc chance is 100%.
¤ All stacks are used on your next successful parry, causing you to lose them.

I have not tested this information but it seems to be very reasonably mechanized.
If you are well geared and parry often, the chance will be lower for you to gain up to 5 stacks. Faster weapon speed will cause stacks to build up faster. The higher your stacks get, the higher your parry chance will be, causing you to have a higher chance to use and lose your stacks.

this enchant to me seems built for fights like gormok in togc 25 when u wont be the only tank tanking, and thus dont need to worry about consuming your stacks, untill your turn to tank again. hopefully you would have 1 or 2 stacks when its your turn to taunt the boss again. i guess blood draining would be benificial in this regard also as can help keep you alive while impale is ticking on you. but i prefer to have faith in my healers in that regard, and would prefer to have the higher avoidance if the healers are a bit slow on the change over.

I was looking at this enchant as I was fortunate enough to get 2x http://www.wowhead.com/?item=50268 on my DK. I have one enchanted with http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=70164 and was debating between blade ward or http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=54446 for the other.

Some of the arguments I see here are concerned with the procc rate and its efficiency vs. the consumption of the buff and the lack of durability mongoose provides.

As a Frost DW DK Tank, I can imagine this enchant helping me incredibly.

I haven't tested it out yet (as I've mentioned, I'm considering the enchant) but I would think having an attack speed of 1.35 while tanking and having a minimum of 3 forced melee attacks (Frost Strike, Bloodstrike, and Obliterate), I stand to see quite a few proccs. Probably more so than other tank classes as my rune rotation allows me to force attacks more so once the death runes procc.

Personally, while the stable 2% parry from Swordbreaking is useful, I'd think the additional damage output from parrying the attacks coupled with the Runestrike enables TPS to be much higher than basing it off the ol' DnD + HB.

Currently, there isn't any CC so it's all aoe tanking. If this bladward procced, I could dmg a mob I'm not targettting but parrying which I see having huge potential. It wouldn't even matter if it went to 5 stacks, it has the potential to go to 1 stack for 5 different mobs.

I plan on giving this a go and hoping for the best.

Did this enchant change? The tool tip no longer mentions that it stacks, but rather, the buff procs off hit and lasts a full 10 seconds. Can someone confirm?

I completely disagree with this part of your comment. Basically the point for a tank to stack stamina is to extend the time a boss needs to make his health pool reach 0 and kill him. If you would get a extra 2000 health from stamina if would of course take the boss a few more seconds to take the tank down. A effect sort-alike is achieved with a heal of 1800 - 2200 every time the tank's health get below 35%. Of course the timer on this heal is a large counterpart to this. Though if the most decent groups the chances of the tank getting below 35% once every 50 seconds is quite small.

By no means is this enchant 100% from any of the bosses on any difficulty. My mage has been a max level enchanter since before 3.1 even came out, and over the last year I have done every boss on every difficulty with the exception of one light(25), alone in the dark(25), and steelbreaker(25). I am still yet to see this enchant drop.

My guild has no interest in going back for 25 hardmodes as most of them have their ironbound drakes, so I came here to double (triple?) check that this enchant only drops in 25 man, or if it was perhaps like the 245's and could drop in 10 man hardmodes.

It is beginning to get kind of frustrating as I am only missing 8 enchants in game currently, and this is the only enchant I am missing in wrath.

Dropped today from Thorim's Cache, i have well over 60 kills on some bosses in Ulduar since WoTLK and never seen it drop at all.

Was quite happy to see it drop and now have both Enchants from Ulduar added to my collection. Good luck to anyone else farming this!

The enchanting drops from 25 man normal and 25 hard mode. According to everyone I have talked to, don't waste your time trying to farm 10 man.

Ran 25H Ulduar often enough to get the legendary mace and never saw this enchant. It dropped off Auriaya the first time I ran 25N. No idea if this is typical, ymmv.

This will drop even if you don't have high enough skill level to learn it. I hadn't even learned Northrend enchanting and it still dropped.

are the only ones I'm missing to have all enchants from vanilla to wotlk
and they are worrying me

I've been doing only 6 IDs since I llvled Northred enchant to max, so still not that long, but I hope it won't take a year of grind to get them...
