Actually, this is better than any food currently available, the best of which will restore only 12960 mana (432 mana/sec) and/or 15000 health (500 health/sec); This will restore an additional 68 mana/sec and 100 health/sec. As many casters have mana pools over 20k, this is a welcome step in the right directionl - I hope there will be even better food to come.

About time they added a use for the Borean Man 'O War! I have a few other types of food I've reserved, just in case they decide to make them edible, or usable in recipies. The best part is that this food replenishes more food or mana than the highest level of food available, so it's great if you don't have a mage around.

Trained from Awilo Lon'Gomba (Horde inn, dunno who is ally trainer), 5g at neutral reps. No quest or award token to use, just plain gold cash.

My toon is at 450 cooking and the recipe Black Jelly showed up as grey in cook book so the required skill is a lot lower. Probably 375 to 400 range.

At least it's one more recipe to count towards the 'Chef' Cooking achievement, 'Tastes Like Chicken' achievement and a food that you can cook using the previously-useless Borean Man'O War and at the same time: have the benefit of more HP and Mana level 80 Mage Food without the 'Conjured items disappear after 15 minutes logout' drawback.

This stuff could be a very good fix if your guild doesn't have Mages in raids very often (it can happen; I've also seen raids without S. Priests), provided you have someone who can get a decent amount of Man O' War for whoever's making it.

Now I might actually have a reason to start leveling my Fishing skill again.

I am rather disappointed that this has not been added to The Northrend Gourmet. It would be nice, since it's a relatively easy recipe to get, and might aid those of us who just can't get something to drop.

The reason why they probably went with "black jelly" is that they're made from Jellyfish, which some people would make the leap of logic that jellyfish can be reduced into.... jelly. And a good number of jellies are dark in color (Grape, Blackberry, ect.). The pun is in the fact that Jelly is normally made from fruit (or vegetables) and not invertebrate fish.

Technically, a Man O' War isn't a jellyfish, but it's a close relative.
From Wikipedia:

They are commonly but erroneously thought of and referred to as a jellyfish. In fact, a Portuguese Man O' War is not a single animal, but rather a siphonophore – a colony of four kinds of minute, highly modified individuals, which are specialized polyps and medusoids. Each such zooid in these pelagic colonial hydroids or hydrozoans has a high degree of specialization and, although structurally similar to other solitary animals, are all attached to each other and physiologically integrated rather than living independently. Such zooids are specialised to such an extent that they lack the structures associated with other functions and are therefore dependent for survival on the others to do what the particular zooid cannot do by itself.

The only possible use this food could be is for tanks who want to heal themselves while their healers drink, out of combat of course. Even then, it's only a space saver compared to the normal food.

Strudels and BJ are just the same. Look at the rate each one gives, 30 seconds of BJ give the same as 1 Strudel.

The only drawback as it's been posted before is the amount of time to catch and create them.

Good food to have if you are leveling. In a raid though, chances are you will have strudels so these will be useless. Still, you can always make them and sell them at the AH.

The act of boiling jellyfish until they liquefy is not considered gourmet cooking, evidenced by the fact that black jelly does not appear as criteria for The Northrend Gourmet. So unfortunately this very easy and very inexpensive (so long as you're fishing anyway) recipe is NOT going to get you your chef title any faster.

This recipe causes regeneration at the same speed of a mana strudel, though with two differences. First it lasts twice as long which is a negative and a positive because it means one cooked item doing the job of two strudels. Secondly it's usable by level 75 characters, whereas mana strudel is not. So for 75-79 this can be a very handy recipe to have around; though only if you're willing to farm up the Man 'o Wars.

Because it costs no northern spices, goes green at 412 and grey at 425 it's a very good recipe for leveling your cooking. The bad news is, it also means that if you're not already a high level fishermen you're either gonna need to raise your skill or keep a bunch of +fishing things on you to help out.

This might be a referance to the daily food Spartan soldiers used to eat. It was literally a black jelly and it's ingredients are secret even to this day. The real name of the spartan recipe was "melas zōmos". This might totally be a speculation though.

Well, if we're gonna go the black jelly/Spartan food/Congealed blood dishes, I'm gonna pull the famous filipino dish, Dinuguan. It's believed to be the closest to what the Spartans used to eat in those times, basically the main ingredients being vinegar and pigs blood. Check it out on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dinuguan.

Interesting fact: this appears to be the food with the highest Item Level in the entire game.

EDIT: No longer true. This honor now belongs to the Salty Sea Dog.

EDIT #2: The release of MoP has impacted the Item Level of many food items, and many new items have been released that have higher levels than either this or the Salty Sea Dog.

Does the recipe for this seem to be missing? I went to Dalaran and Borean Tundra and neither vendor seems to have it. i have 400 cooking. any other reqs? maybe removed with the latest patch?
