is it me or does 45 armor penetration seem low?

Is this potion going to be desirable at all? As a Balance druid, I have no clue about melee stuff, but I just learned how to make this yesterday - I haven't been able to sell any yet, but that could be partly because everyone's more focused on leveling than looking for potions on the AH.

Armour penetration (or armor ignore as it used to be known) is the only stat that increases in effectiveness the more you stack. For a melee class that stacks a lot of ArP the extra 6% provided by this potion can add a lot of DPS.

Also remember that in a raid situation a mob will already have Sunder Armour and Curse of Wrecklessness on it, therefore a base amount of armour is already ignored.

Well it is more likely to be either Sting from a Wasp pet or Faerie Fire from a Druid than the Curse.

In any case, ArP rating is taken into account based on the target's current armor, not it's base armor. This was done to remove the total reduction of armor, and hence the ArP 'cap'.
Of course this represents a major nerf to the power of that stat, and any class that does a significant amount of DPS (say 30%) that isn't affected by armor is better off going for other stats like Crit or AP.

I foresee this elixir to be a quite specific elixir for a few classes. Much like the Fel Mana Potion was almost exclusively for Hunters.

My mage found three of these in her bag. She did not make them - not high enough in Alchemy. Must have come from a quest I think, but I don't see that info in wowhead.

With Mixology, this elixir gives 61 Armor Penetration rating, giving 4.95% reduction at level 80.

This is a 16 ArP Bonus.

For those ArP-happy hunters, this + Elixir of Mighty Thoughts is BARELY a 3 DPS increase over a Flask of Endless Rage according to the most recent spreadsheet. Unless you are min/maxing to the extreme, the fact that Endless Rage persists through death will make it the more practical option.
